Back To Life Back To Reality

Call me naive, you may even call me stupid , should you so wish . But explain to me this.

These results seemingly took place at the collegiate level within college football. How in God’s name could anyone not have seen any of this coming ?

Penn State (5) 10-21 Iowa

A gloomy looking Joe Paterno stands on the sidelines after the game inexplicably at a loss for words after his team's defeat by Iowa 21-10. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Carolyn Kaster ................

Out with the old, in with the new. Please Joe , walk away , walk very far away !

Iowa's Adrian Clayborn (94) returns a blocked punt for the score in the 21-10 upset victory over the Nittany Lions by the Hawkeyes . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Carolyn Kaster ....................

If you want to prove a point then nothing say its more emphativcally than embarrassing an opponent than with the return of a blocked punt for a score !

Oregon 42-3 California (6)

Cal's Jerome Meadows ,left, sits with his head buried in his hands unable to watch the unfolding debacle. Seated alongside him is teammate J P Hurrell as the final moments of the game wind down . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Don Ryan ...............

College teams within the state of California carry such high expectations , wouldn’t you agree ? Only to fall flat, much like an uncorked bottle of wine that’s been left to stand for far too long.

Cal running back Jahvid Best is tackled by Oregon defenders Josh Kaddu (56) and Lavasier Tuinei during the second half of a college game played in Eugene , Oregon., Cal was completely outplayed by their Pac 10 rivals and the end result was 42-3 victory for the Oregon Ducks. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Do Ryan ......................

The Pac-10 is for steers or queers ? Whoops ! Did I just say that ? Yes ……. I …did ! Oh my !

Miami (9) 7-31 Viriginia Tech (11)

Canes' quarterback Jacory Harris (12) walks off the field after throwing an interception during the game . The Canes produced a rather lackluster performance against the Virginia Tech Hokies , losing 31-7 to their CC rivals . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Steve Hlber .................

Way to go Canes . Just proving once again that the program is nowhere near where it needs to be. And how the hell do you call that defense ? There was more resistance put up by the French before they ended up surrendering to the Germans in World War II.

Mississippi (4) 10-16 South Carolina

The ol’ ball coach can still create a miracle. Cause God seemingly likes ugly on his off days. No word as of yet how St Peter felt about this all.

For many of these teams with championship aspirations. Their season though is far from over. Is just became somewhat more daunting. As they can ill afford to have another slip up of this nature and be of the belief that they’ll still be able to fare well on the national stage. After-all that’s why the games are played. The highs and lows can seemingly bring us back to a sobering dose of reality – as far as life and sports in general are concerned.

Were there any other games played where the final results created the same impression as far as you were concerned ?

NB: I think that the following song and its title pretty much sums things up ! It’s Soul II Soul‘s “Back To Life “

  1. I actually called the VT and Oregon upsets but really thought Penn State would be able to handle their business.

I didn’t buy into the UM hype. Miami wasn’t as good as everyone thought and Va Tech wasn’t as bad as everyone thought. Same with Cal and Oregon.

But, dude… Joe Pa. You have to be able to handle your business in a revenge game. That was a joke.

Of course, I couldn’t watch it because it was Big Ten football and it was more unwatchable than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I think that Joe Pa got his suppository and Viagra medication mixed up. That’s the only reason I can surmise that his play calling was so bad. His as_s went stiff while “dick” went flaccid.

The Bucs could only muster just under 100 yds of complete offense. Wow ! And much of that came from Josh Johnson.

Big Ten and Big 12 football much like some of the unwanted drivel that’s being served up in the Pac 10 can be unwatchable at times. Doesn’t anyone know how to play defense there ?

  2. I thought Miami was over rated. Penn State no. Orgeon sorta with that said this is what makes college football so much more exciting than the NFL. This is happening with much regularity. I love it. USC upset was great. This can be traced to the 1970’s and 1980’s when the NCAA put limit on scholarships. When I was playing ball in the 1960’s (!967-1970) colleges could recruit as many players as they wnated. The big boys UCS, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, and the rest would recruit twelve high school All-Americans at each position. May the best man win. The others who didn’t make it too bad you have to stay at the school.

Please don’t say that was a ‘trap game’ for Penn State. They’ve got to be able to handle their business.

Miami on the other hand are still a young team learning the ropes. Randy Shannon should’ve brought them back to earth before this Hokies’ game. And that’s his fault and no one else’s . Instead they took it all too lightly and were made to pay for it all.
