Mr October …… Blah , Blah , Blah…… A-Rod Ain’t It !

It never surprises me as to the sheer idiocy of many of the sports writers and tv analysts who claim to be intelligent and knowledgeable enough about their sport. Well in the case of Major League Baseball (MLB). All of a sudden the pundits are already lauding over the postseason exploits of the New York Yankees‘ 3rd baseman Alex Rodriguez . Commendable as his exploits have been this postseason. To be making comparisons between A-Rod and another Yankees’ great, Reggie Jackson is as asinine as they come.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez gets a pat on the head from team captain Derek Jeter after he scored a run against the Minnesota Twins in game 3 of the ALDS game played at the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota,. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Johnathan Daniel ................

Now unless my memory is completely out of whack with regard to the historical relevance of Jackson’s postseason exploits. Rodriguez’s own exploits in the postseason just doesn’t even measure up when compared to that of Reggie Jackson. That tends to be the case when you have on air personalities and former players now making such stupid statements. Whether or not they’re doing this in order to maximize their exposure on television. It makes their credibility all the more ridiculous to begin with in that regard. An on air personality once again looking to make complete fools of themselves. And in that regard when it comes to that , the personalities on Fox, ESPN and TBS tends to overstep that line of credibility. Wherein , there’s none to begin with !

‘Liar, liar , pants on fire . My bad ! Listen intently to Rodriguez’s answers and it becomes abundantly clear as to what the player is truly all about.

Before they really can start to make comparisons as to Rodriguez’s postseason exploits ,they ought to look at the body of the player’s work thus far in the postseason. He’s yet to lead the Yankees anywhere. He’s yet to win a World Series. But what’s even more repugnant is the sheer audacity of these idiots to think that Rodriguez and Jackson are now comparable in stature as to the relevant stages of their careers.

Rodriguez’s public apology. Easily blurring truth and reality. I was somewhat surprise that the ‘Tooth Fairy’ didn’t make an appearance at the time.

While I don’t doubt Rodriguez’s credentials as a player. What I do find somewhat annoying about the player, is the fact that he still lives in a world of denial and the mere fact that he can no longer be truthful as to his use of steroids. Having publicly acknowledged his use of it , earlier in his career. He’s failed to answer questions raised when it was stated that he’d continued to use steroids after the 2004 season.Which clearly signifies to me that Rodriguez still has a great deal to learn when it comes to telling the truth. But much like Rodriguez, Jackson isn’t without fault when it comes to having an ego. Jackson, known for being able to perform on the grandest of stages. He knows how to play to the crowds and though he wasn’t always known to be a choirboy. He he never made himself out to be one. His already legendary meltdowns within the Yankees’ clubhouse and his contempt for Yankees’ owner George Steinbrenner , as well as this then coach , Billy Martin. Well in many ways it gives us an idea as to the what Jackson was all about. Still beloved by many New York Yankees’ fans as well as A’s fans in the city of Oakland . The legacy of Reggie Jackson is one that is what the game of baseball is meant to be about , in terms of his on the field accomplishments.

Jackson hits one of three monumental home runs during the game in the 1977 World Series played against the Los Angeles Dodgers . picture appears courtesy of baseball archives ............ Jed Patterson ................................

And for Rodriguez , though his life has been filled with a great deal of controversy. Much of it self initiated , with all too often publicity seeking antics that’ve been as asinine as they come. I’d however, say this objectively as to the only valid observations that can be made with regard to Alex Rodriguez and Reggie Jackson are that in their prime ……these two players were the very best that the game has to offer ! . However, when it comes to making postseason comparisons between the two. Alex Rodriguez is no ……..Mr October ! There will only ever be one player for that lone specific moniker can be referred to . And that is Reggie ‘Reginald Martinez’ Jackson ! That’s because his postseason exploits speak for themselves. As of now , Alex Rodriguez has yet to prove himself as a player within the New York Yankees’ organization. Regular season stats count for nothing , when your team is expected to contend year in year out for the World Series.

Nobody does it better .... Reggie Jackson shows his prowess at the plate during the 1977 World Series . picture appears i.cdn.turner.com/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0809/mlb.top.world.series.moments/images/1977-reggie-

With Jackson the Yankees’ fans knew what to expect when Reggie was ready to play. And play he did , and though it can be said he wasn’t always complimentary towards some of his teammates or manager as the case maybe. Jackson came to play, and play he did , as if his very life and soul depended on it. At this juncture the same cannot be said of Alex Rodriguez, as he’s yet to truly prove himself on the postseason stage. Rodriguez for his part knows that he has to prove himself not only to the New York Yankees’ fans but also to the fans of baseball in general. If he’s unable to perform upon the grandest of stages in the postseason and not lead this team to a World Series win. Then the only moniker attached to the name of Alex Rodriguez will be ….. great player , ……….. though not that great in the postseason . It’d appear that for now A-Rod will just have to continue to ride on the coat tails of Derek Jeter for the foreseeable future. Jackson never really had to do that whilst a player for the venerable New York Yankees. That my friends, is the stark difference between these two undoubtedly talented players.

Jackson (left) now a special consultant with the New York Yankees , sits in the dugout alongside Alex Rodriguez . Whatever the topic of discussion might've been about. I doubt it had anything to do with the number of World Series rings that Jackson has. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Rich Creswell ........................

So as of now, let’s just have all this talk stop of Rodriguez being the new ‘Mr October’ . As he’s yet to prove himself in October , much less having made an appearance of note in the ‘Fall Classic’ , known as the World Series . There will forever be only one ‘Mr October’ and that’s Reggie Jackson . Need one say anymore ?

  1. Very well put my friend. A-fraud is a liar and a cheater. Reggie Jackson, as you so eloquently pointed out, is the one and only Mr. October.

Have a good evening my friend.

A-Fraud is still in denial. And ’til he lives up to that multi-million dollar contract by leading the Yankees to a World Series win. Then he’ll just be considered a great player. His image is tarnished as it is. And bear in mind he’s earning nowhere near the money one would’ve expected him to be earning by way of endorsements. In large part if it wasn’t for the exorbitant contract he signed with the Yankees. He’d be earning next to nothing as it is .

I know that they won’t consider him that ’til he proves himself. And as evidenced with this postseason output , he’s still some ways to go in that area. I’d say that Sabathia and Teixiera have already proven their worth to this Yankees’ team. He was merely brought in by the Yankees to sell tickets because they feel that he’ll be the one to break the home run record. And if it’s done by a Yankee , then it’ll only add to the allure and legacy of the organization as it is. If he can lead them to a World Series , if being the operative word as I for one have never viewed him as a leader. If he can lead them to a World Series’ win then it’ll have been worth it. However, if it doesn’t happen this year then they might as well be calling for him to be hung from the highest rafters outside their new facility. And that ought to be done as a reminder to overpaid self indulgent athletes who think more about their own image rather than that of being a teammate. That’s how I view A-Rod.

  2. Yeah, there is no comparison to Jackson as far as the post season goes. I honestly don’t like Jackson. I used to see him every now and then at my old workplace and he was always a dick. Anyways, A-Rod won’t be a Yankee great like Reggie until he starts coming through for multiple world series titles!

The guy has always been ‘a dick ‘ , and not only that he’s a prissy little as-hole ! When I use to live in South Florida (Miami-Ft Lauderdale area) and he was in town . He’d expect almost everyone to be kissin’ his as_ as he felt he was the ‘ BMOC’……”big man on campus “.

Not only that but once it came out as to his sexual proclivities in wanting to part of a threesome with his wife in tow. It basically made you completely aware as to what the guy was really about. He cared about no one but himself and the image portrayed infront of the public for their consumption. He’s still in denial as to his actions concerning the steroids to begin with. He immediately blames a relative for his actions rather than being man enough to stand up and be held accountable for his own actions. Much like every other athlete that has been placed in such a situation. They’ve ‘no balls or moral compass to begin with !

  3. We’ve talked about this in the past, Al.

Win in New York and you’re a hero for life. Don’t get it done and you’re labeled.

Look at Joe Namath. An average career QB at best. But he won them a Bowl and he’s a legend. Look at Willis Reed, probably not one of the top ten centers in NBA history but the moment where he re-enters that game is still mentioned. Parcells, Jeter, LT, Reggie… there names are iconic. Even Eli and Coughlin have a lifetime pass.

We’ll see what happens. Since my Sox are out, I’m just hoping to see some decent baseball. May the best team win… unless of course it’s the Yankees.

In all honesty in the case of A-Rod. If they win inspite of him . Then I for one don’t see him being mentioned in the same breath of those illustrious New York luminaries. He’s got to to go out there and prove not only to the Yankees’ fans that he’s finally a Yankees’ player but also to baseball fans in general. And that means him having to play hard , lead , hit home runs , rbi’s . ‘nough said !

As to the ALCS , I for one don’t believe this thing is cut and dried as Vegas is making out with their odds. They’ve NY as being 9-5 favorites to win the AL Pennant. That’s doing a great disservice to the Los Angeles Angels . That team can mash and play ball And that’s no lie !

You can win in New York and still be treated as either a pariah or parasite. Moreover it’s about earning the respect of the fans to begin with. Ewing never won a thing at all with the Knicks . But he’s earned the respect of the fans there for years to come. So in essence it does negate the point you’ve made in part about winning in ‘ The Big Apple’.

And Patrick Ewing is treated like a deity there in New York . As the fans have appreciated the fact that he gave it his all when playing for the team and for them.

He’s been nothing more than self serving and a complete embarrassment to the Yankees , the game and himself.

As for John Kruk calling him ‘Mr October’ …that clearly tells you that Kruk has been drinking far too much of the ‘Kool Aid’ to begin with.

I think it’s all about the impression created at the time. The Knicks with Ewing n tow played their hearts out and came so close. As you say they revere the guy because of what he did both on and off the court. And that at the end of the day that ultimately has to count for something !

  6. Let’s hope he’ll get one as part of the Orlando Magic bench.

Oklahoma is shutting down Colt McCoy.

An Oklahoma victory shuts the Big 12 out of the BCS championship game and opens the door for USC, Va Tech, Ohio State and maybe even Cincy or Boise State.

    Things are getting interesting.

If the Sooners are doing that then there has to be something seriously wrong with him for Stoops to do that.

As for Ewing I don’t know that he’ll manage to win a ring with the Magic. The power within the NBA still lies in the West. And to my mind that’s where this year’s champion will come from. The Cavs are good but ‘one man’ in this case LeBron doesn’t make a team , even with Shaq in tow. The rest of the roster just isn’t that good to begin with !

  7. I’m a little surprised that Vegas has the Nuggets as such heavy dogs to win a title. After Los Angeles, Boston and Cleveland, they have as good a shot as anybody.

Yet Vegas thinks New Orleans, Utah and Portland have a better shot than Denver?

They’re looking for the hard money to roll with the Nuggets. They’ll be in where it counts but I don’t know if their roster is good enough to take down the Lakers. With the acquisition of Artest – the Lakers are still the team to beat. Make no bones about it . Cause if Artest maintains the same poise and zeal he showed with the Rockets. Then they’re odds on favorites to repeat with some ease.
