If It Walks Like A Duck And Quacks Like A Duck Then It Ought To Be A Duck ……… !

The stupidity and lack of intelligence shown by today’s athletes never ceases to amaze me, even from the college ranks on upwards ! We ought to expect it somewhat from high schoolers , as their minds and bodies have yet to reach maturity. But what does it say in this day and age about many of the highly paid stars within the professional ranks ? Needless to say, many of these numb skulls once they’ve ran afoul of the law from their own sheer stupidity , they tend to apportion the blame elsewhere for their own actions. Prime example, the idiocy shown by golfer Tiger Woods after the fallout from his extra marital affairs. What other moron would have the temerity to apportion the blame initially, at the hands of the press ? Hey Tiger, when last we heard from the several ‘skanks’ that you had sex with, the press wasn’t there writing down every word spoken during your sexual trysts. Grow up and act like you’ve got a pair !

In Tuesday’s sports section of USA Today ran a piece concerning five major league stars caught in the midst of the steroid scandal and the fact that their names were part of the 104 mentioned in the now infamous ‘Mitchell Report’ . If ever there was a situation concocted by Major League Baseball (MLB) that showed little transparency if any. Then the ‘Mitchell Report’ was it !

The ’07 Mitchell Report’s effect: Five active players reflect

By Bob Nightingale, Jorge L. Ortiz & Paul White of USA Today

It was, and probably still is, baseball’s darkest day this century. When the Mitchell Report detailing performance-enhancing drug use was released Dec. 13, 2007, old wounds were reopened and new sins exposed. There remain 10 active players —Jack Cust, Brendan Donnelly, Eric Gagne, Matt Herges, Paul Lo Duca, Andy Pettitte, Brian Roberts, Miguel Tejada, Ron Villone and Gregg Zaun— whose connections to performance-enhancing drugs were brought to light that day. USA TODAY caught up with five of them:

JACK CUST | MIGUEL TEJADA | MATT HERGES | GREGG ZAUN

***

ERIC GAGNE: ‘I I let people down’

Eric Gagne looks back at his chapter in the Mitchell Report and the height of the steroid era with both guilt and regret.

After spending a rejuvenating 2009 season playing independent ball in his native Canada, the 2003 National League Cy Young Award winner is trying to return to the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This spring, he has acknowledged to the Los Angeles Times what the Mitchell Report alleged: that he used human growth hormone during part of his stint with the Dodgers from 1999 to 2006.

“I said a long time ago I regretted the whole thing,” Gagne said without getting into specifics. “It’s unfortunate it happened, but it happened. You can’t change it. It’s going to be in my résumé for the rest of my life.”

Gagne, who converted a major league-record 84 consecutive save opportunities, said he endured verbal harassment from fans. Much worse was his own guilt.

“I felt like I let people down,” Gagne said. “It wasn’t really fun the last three years, being hurt and then the Mitchell Report. So that’s why I went over there (to play independent ball in Quebec City) and really had fun.”

Gagne looks considerably slimmer than in his heyday, although he said he had only lost 7-8 pounds. He said a larger good came out of the Mitchell Report.

“This wasn’t really about me,” Gagne said. “It’s more about baseball, and I think they’ve done everything in their power to make it right.”

Each of the five players mentioned in the piece written by Bob Nightingale, Jorge Ortiz and Paul White of USA Today, granted the journalists an interview, that in some ways was succinct . However , it also became clear that they felt that MLB was at fault, in the way with which the investigation had been conducted. Nonetheless, it can’t hide the fact that in each case , Eric Gagne , Jack Cust , Matt Herges , Miguel Tejada and Gregg Zaun broke the rules of of the game by using what was at the time a banned substance. Far be it for me to suggest that these players weren’t completely aware as to what they were doing , nor were they not aware as to the ramifications of their actions. But this all goes to show how entitled athletes feel that they ought to be when they views themselves above the laws of the land and untouchable by those very laws that are meant to govern us all. A fact that appears to be lost on them, as well as their own union hierarchy led by MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner but not on the general public.

If Major League Baseball (MLB) wanted to show some real transparency when the investigation and inquiries were ongoing then why would Commissioner Bud Selig choose ‘someone with ties’ to the game ? In choosing former Senator George Mitchell (D-Maine), who is also a Director and board member of the Boston Red Sox , he chose in part to make sure that this investigation would be conducted in such a manner that any questions arising from it could not be treated with any veracity , other than what was stated via Mitchell and those subordinated under him to assist in the inquiry. He could’ve chosen someone from outside the realms of the game but someone who had a unique insight of the game but also the law. A retired federal court judge would’ve been more preferable than an insider ! Clearly a better choice than Mitchell could’ve been made. But Selig must have been impressed by the former Senator’s resume’ and the fact that as a diplomat under Bill Clinton reign as President, he presided over the peace negotiations between the Protestants and Catholics over the unrest in Northern Ireland. On a bye-note, much of the violence that took place under the auspices of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) would never have taken place if such conduits of the IRA weren’t welcomed here in the United States and allowed to visit both legislative houses of the US Government , be allowed free rein to raise countless millions of dollars, to impart its reign of terror on innocent civilians , police officers, and members of the British military. Having served with the British Royal Marines in Belfast during some of the unrest. I saw first hand what the IRA were capable of. And I lost several comrades in combat against the terrorist organization. If you thought that only the Taliban and Al-Qaeda were capable of heinous atrocities against the military and innocent civilians and bystanders, then think again. As the IRA were ‘masters of such atrocities’ long before Al Qaeda or the Taliban ever came into being.

Mitchell’s report apportions much of the blame at the door of the ‘players’ , the union (MLBPA) but none of it where it quite rightly belongs, upon the shoulders of the owners , coaches , managers and most definitely upon the MLB hierarchy and in particular on Bud Selig and MLB President & COO Bob DuPuy . This report was as contrived as it could get. And it certainly hasn’t set aside the notion that the league is still in a mess and being ran by bunch of bumbling oafs !

And to add more fuel to the fire, with each passing phase of the return to the game of Mark McGwire as the hitting instructor for the St Louis Cardinals and his relationship with Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa . Their relationship stemming back from McGwire’s days as a player alongside former teammate Jose Canseco and when La Russa was manager of the Oakland Athletics . One must now find it hard to believe that La Russa as the manager of the team, was completely unaware and failed to to take notice of what was allegedly going on in the A’s locker room with both Canseco and McGwire. Canseco in his candid disclosure, publicly as well as in his book, made it clear that ‘both he and McGwire took steroids purely for personal gain’. La Russa missing what even a child couldn’t have failed to have noticed is still in denial and his own culpability in this all has to come into question. So too must the integrity of all of the major league managers within the game , where players on their teams were known to be using steroids and other banned substances. But that’s what baseball does nowadays , hides behind ‘the veil of stupidity’ and then acts circumspect as if they’ve now they’ve begun to ‘see the light’ !

Mets’ Beltran confirms meeting with feds

By Jay Cohen , AP Sports Writer

Port St Lucie , Fla. (AP)—Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran talked to federal investigators last week about a Canadian doctor accused of selling an unapproved drug and said he recommended the physician to teammate Jose Reyes.

Beltran went to Toronto last summer seeking Dr. Anthony Galea’s opinion on his bruised right knee, the All-Star said Tuesday. He worked with Galea for a month and felt better following a rehab program, but his knee regressed when he went home to Puerto Rico.

“I have nothing to worry (about), nothing to hide,” Beltran said. “I just went there for an opinion for my knee.”

Galea is facing four charges in Canada related to the drug known as Actovegin, which is extracted from calf’s blood and used for healing. His assistant also has been charged in the U.S. for having HGH and another drug while crossing the border in September.

Investigators talked to Reyes last week. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez said Monday that he had been contacted about the probe.

Galea is known for using a blood-spinning technique—platelet-rich plasma therapy—designed to speed recovery from injuries. Among the athletes he has treated are golfer Tiger Woods, swimmer Dara Torres and several NFL players.

The New York Times reported on its Web site Tuesday that authorities wanted to speak with Beltran and former Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado because another athlete said he was referred to Galea by the stars.

Beltran confirmed he recommended Galea to Reyes.

“When I was out, Reyes was one of the guys that was out also,” he said, adding he told his teammate, “Reyes, give it a try. He helped with other athletes.”

“So Reyes at the same time put his agent in contact with the doctor and they were in contact with the team,” he said.

New York Mets’ players Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran have both been recently subjected to questioning by the FBI at the behest of the Justice Department into their ongoing investigation of Dr Anthony Galea. The doctor has been the subject of an ongoing probe by the FBI in conjunction with the use of the drug Actovegin and for the cross border transportation of ‘HGH’ (human growth hormone) into the United States. With the ongoing investigation and its tentacles now spreading beyond baseball and the very fact that PGA golfer Tiger Woods is known to have consulted with Galea . Which may well lead everyone to now be suspicious of Woods , in more ways than one. It has to be said that not only has baseball been negligent in dealing with its ongoing steroid problem but the PGA Tour, its board members and Commissioner Tim Finchem may well need to address the issue head on, apart from having already instigated a ‘drug testing policy’ for the Tour. Players have come forward welcoming that fact. But what does it say about the game when its number one player is not only embroiled in a somewhat nasty personal situation but may well now become embroiled in a far more reaching probe concerning the prohibitive use of a substance ?

Woods for his part has yet to be interviewed by law enforcement , nor has he made a public statement concerning his association with Dr Galea. But if the dominoes should start to fall and he’s somehow embroiled in this all. Then ‘he’ might as well shut down his PGA golf career once and for all ! At present there’s nothing to suggest that Woods, Beltran or Reyes have done anything illegal. But the perception is there for all to see and guilt merely by association , tends to stick when it involves something as serious as the illegal use of a banned substance.

Tiger Woods flexes his right bicep muscle . That's one muscle he's been using a little less lately, as it's been about the use of a muscle in his pelvic area. Way to go Tiger , keep on swinging away ... if you know what I mean ? photo appears courtesy of Getty Images/ Phil Matthews .................

Given the fact that an athletes tends to strenuously deny any wrongdoing on their part even when there’s clear evidence that something untoward has taken place. It’ll be very interesting to see what the response may well be from Woods , should the subject be broached by either a member of the press or the public alike dependent upon the arena present. He was reticent to let his guard down before but now that his ‘dirty laundry’ is out soiled , tarnished and shall we say ‘ downright nasty’ ? What else would now ‘surprise us about Woods or anything else concerning the game of baseball’ ? I mean “………… If It Walks Like A Duck And Quacks Like A Duck Then It Ought To Be A Duck ……… ! Doesn’t It ? Or Is It Merely A Case of Rushing To Judgment On Our Part ? Given the circumstances and the chain of events that have taken place what’s your opinion on it all ?

I’d rather see naked pictures of Kim Kardashian than having to listen to Selig , DuPuy or Woods speak about the present situation as it relates to their personal or professional lives ! All of it has been self inflicted and they can’t apportion it anywhere else no matter what !

In all honesty though al, who’d you rather see naked ? Bea Arthur or Kim Kardashian ? C’mon now , be honest ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!!

As ‘dumb’ the ballplayers are, the MLB hierarchy of Bob DuPuy and Bud Selig are equally as dumb ! But to top it all the ‘owners’ and ‘managers’ knew full well what was going on. They simply didn’t care , merely because of the tens of millions of dollars that were to be made from this whole shebang !

Canseco was merely looking to make his ‘ends’ and publicize his book. He made out quite handily . So I’ve nothing at all against his ass either !

The thing is , he’s yet to apologize for his misdeeds and he’s unlikely to at this juncture. He couldn’t give a rat’s a_s either way !

Now it’s going to be fun to see how the likes Beltran , Rodriguez and Woods explain away why it was they were seeing Dr Galea. Even when it was known that he was under investigation by the FBI and Justice Dept .
