Torii Hunter Please Shut The F_ck Up …….. As With A Lot Of African American Professional Male Athletes In Sports You’re Coming Across As Uneducated And A Complete As_hole !

As a young child while I was raised in the Caribbean from the age of two until the age of ten. I always heeded the the words of my maternal grandmother. She said to me that if you have nothing at all nice to say about a person then it’s best to say nothing at all. But if you do have something to say then at least make sure that it’s something constructive and meaningful. I’m actually paraphrasing but hopefully you’ll get the gist of what I’m trying to say and alluding to.

I can only surmise that either Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter is aggrieved by something , for which his tirade and statements obviously show either a great deal of anger or just sheer downright stupidity. But then again, when I simply look at many of the African American male athletes involved in professional sports. I’m no longer surprised by their stupidity or lack of education as the case maybe. But yet time and time again we have sociologists and psychotherapists making excuses for the African American male. Please stop it with all this bullshit as it has no bearing when you hear the idiotic statement now attributed to the Hunter. I wonder what his former teammate Vladimir Guerrero must now be thinking about this all ? Never mind the fact of Hunter’s own teammates who are of an ethnic origin but also of African American descent. Obviously a guy such as Hunter who commands a great deal of respect as a player must now be wishing that he didn’t utter the words calling players from Latin America and the Caribbean but who are of African descent ……… calling them “frauds” and “impostors” . If they are as such frauds in his eyes , I’d dare to think how they now judge him not only as a person but also as a player !

Hunter says black Latino players are ‘impostors’

By Janie McCauley , AP Sports Writer

Phoenix ,(AP)—Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter called black Latino baseball players “impostors” when it comes to the appearance of the number of African-Americans in the major leagues.

Hunter’s comments were made two weeks ago in one of a series of USA Today roundtables about baseball and published in Wednesday’s editions.

“People see dark faces out there, and the perception is that they’re African-American,” Hunter said. “They’re not us. They’re impostors. Even people I know come up and say: ‘Hey, what color is Vladimir Guerrero ? Is he a black player?’ I say, ‘Come on, he’s Dominican. He’s not black.’ …

“As African-American players, we have a theory that baseball can go get an imitator and pass them off as us. It’s like they had to get some kind of dark faces, so they go to the Dominican or Venezuela because you can get them cheaper. It’s like, ‘Why should I get this kid from the South Side of Chicago and have Scott Boras represent him and pay him $5 million when you can get a Dominican guy for a bag of chips?’ … I’m telling you, it’s sad,” he said.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, a Venezuelan, scoffed at Hunter’s remarks before Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics. Angels spokesman Eric Kay said Hunter will not further discuss the subject.

“I was laughing because when he said, ‘They go there and sign for potato chips,’ I said, ‘Well, we’ve got Chapman. They gave him $12 million. (Cincinnati actually agreed to a $30.25 million, six-year contract with pitcher Aroldis Chapman(notes).) We’ve got (prospect Dayan) Viciedo. They gave him $10 million. I remember in my time, one scout goes (to Venezuela and) 30 players show up. Now, 30 scouts go there and one player shows up. In our country, we play baseball. That’s no choice. Here you can play basketball, you can be another athlete, you can do so many things when you have the opportunity. And that’s why there’s not many (African-American) players out there.”

There has been some concern about the number of African-American baseball players. Many blacks are choosing to play other sports instead.

Black players accounted for 10.2 percent of major leaguers in 2008, the most since the 1995 season, according to the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports.

“I keep saying a lot of times, in 10 more years American people are going to need a visa to play this game because we’re going to take over. We’re going to,” Guillen said.

AP freelance writers Jose Romero in Phoenix and Jim Richards in Tempe contributed to this report.

I can only surmise that Hunter’s education and whatever tidbit he might’ve learned in school, may well have been taught to him sparingly. I’d hate to think that his parents or familial caregiver brought him up in such a way, where he comes across a racial bigot against his own kind ! But then again, he may well aspire to be the African American male equivalent of Archie Bunker , who in this case derives pleasure in denigrating his race ? But alas , this merely typifies the another reason why the African American male becomes the butt of so many jokes. Even the women at times now deride the males of their ethnicity because once they’ve landed it big more often than not they’ve got to have the ‘trophy mantel’ of a Caucasian female adorning their arm to give them what they might even deem that air of acceptability and perhaps authenticity ?

If Hunter’s real grievance is with the fact that there’s now a declining number of African American males entering the sport professionally. Then his statement shouldn’t be directed caustically at Latin American or Caribbean ballplayers. But he, himself , should be out there working in conjunction with MLB and its hierarchy in making the sport more amenable to young males no matter what their ethnicity ! But no doubt Hunter would be hard pressed to give you an answer why he’s not doing something like that . But I can only surmise the burden that is placed upon him as he’s weighed down by the $80 million dollar plus contract given to him by Angels’ owner Arte Moreno . Hunter is simply proving once again why it is that young males and many others are no longer simply interested in looking up to African American ballplayers. They simply now come across as being bereft of intelligence and their command of the English language borders on that of an immigrant having landed on these shores for the very first time ! There are no real role models there ! There’s no one there who epitomizes Ernie Banks , Hank Aaron or even even Robert Clemente for that matter. All they now have are idiots such as Torii Hunter and Milton Bradley ! Thank God, Barry Bonds hauled his fat ass off into oblivion ! Or there would still be the tri-fecta of damn goof balls still involved in the sport. Well , we could anoint them baseball’s very own version of ‘The Three Stooges’ !

In the big picture this may seem nothing more than sedentary at the end of the day. But is it now any wonder why there’s simply no reason for youngsters , especially African American males from the middle to high school level on up to take a keen interest in the sport. Not when you have an idiot such as Hunter spouting off at the mouth , the way that he has done. He’d be better off leading this Angels’ team and providing them with a backbone , rather than them coming off as the bitches that they are at present ! Because we all know , come the postseason in baseball they’ll be one down and heading home with their tails between their legs once again . And then we can all have a laugh at Torii Hunter and the Angels’ expense ! That moment can’t come soon enough as far I’m concerned ! It’s not as if Hunter has really done anything for the team since he landed in Anaheim anyway. He’s now living on the past glories of the contributions given to the Minnesota Twins. And this is undoubtedly why he was overpaid for the negligible contributions given to the organization thus far.

  1. Talk about setting yourself back 20 years!! I didn’t actually hear about these comments until your post. I have no idea why anybody would make comments like this. I mean, I wouldn’t get pissed at people for calling me Japanese or Vietnamese instead of Chinese. It’s really sad, because I always thought of Hunter as a real classy guy, but it doesn’t take long to ruin that image!

Guys like Hunter should simply play ball and not talk about subjects that they have no knowledge about . Once again an African American athlete who shows how damn ignorant and unintelligent they really are. And one wonders why there isn’t a healthy respect for African American ballplayers now in baseball ?

If Hunter epitomizes what they’re about then young kids had better look elsewhere for a ‘role model’ and another game to play altogether. Hunter much like Ron Artest should keep their fu_king mouths closed unless they have something relevant to say. Because with this latest statement it merely sets the African American race back and the game also. He can’t retract this statement and try to say that he was misquoted.

Hunter is encouraging no one with this racial diatribe. If anything it’ll have an adverse effect. What he’s said is asinine and just epitomizes the long held views about what black athletes of American descent simply can be at times. And that’s as dumb as a box of rocks. Tell me how this makes the image of the game have more resonance with young black American males ? Hunter is a fu_king oaf !

I’m surprised that no one has called him out on this ? But then again we’re talking baseball where the intelligence quotient among the players isn’t that high to begin with !

  2. I remember Gary Sheffield making similar comments a couple of years ago. Although I was disappointed how my fellow Tampa native expressed his views, there is a valid point behind the racist remarks. That being Major League Baseball is doing a horrible job at promoting the sport at the amateur level in the United States.

Please don’t get me wrong, I neither agree nor defend such bigoted remarks.

The hierarchy of baseball has been fighting an uphill battle and at the same time Selig has done a ‘pi_s poor job’ as commissioner. They have an initiative in place concerning baseball and the inner city youths. But they’re doing nowhere near good enough in the elementary or high schools to promote the game. Is it any wonder that the game no longer resonates with most kids ? They’d rather play basketball , football or even hockey for that matter ! And not only that they know that they can make more money in the NBA or NFL . Instead they’ve got the teams entering into Latin America and the Far East promoting the games there and opening up academies. What would that suggest to you ? Obviously they’re no longer interested in the kids here and getting them interested in the game.

As far as I’m concerned guys like Hunter and Sheffield are unintelligent have nothing of interest to say about the game. Sheffield himself was one of the names in the Mitchell Report. So to my mind anything he has to say becomes mute. The guy is an a_s !

Not only is MLB doing a horrible job promoting the game domestically but essentially they don’t want to work in conjunction the Int’l Baseball Frederation (IBAF) the ruling body for the game at the international level. And that was also one of the reasons why the IOC dropped the sport from the Summer Olympics. It really had nothing to do with the alleged lack of competition. There’s no waning popularity for the sport internationally. It boiled to MLB’s unwillingness at the time to adopt WADA’s drug testing policy which goes hand in hand with what the Olympics supposedly striving for at present.

MLB had to be dragged kicking and screaming to adopt it because they and MLBPA have been so complicit in the fraud that had been perpetrated on the baseball fans here in the US.

Unfortunately for Hunter this is one statement he can’t retract as it’s there for all to read and witness. Typical idiocy shown once again by an African American athlete whose IQ is probably no higher than that of a frigging gnat !

  4. Believe it or not, I kind of empathized with Torii. He admitted the use of the word “impostor” was a bad choice, which I agree with wholeheartedly, but I know what he meant. When talking about the lack of African-Americans in baseball, people will often say “it’s fine, there’s lots of black players.” What Hunter is pointing out is that many of them are Latino so you can’t count them. He’s not saying they aren’t black. He admitted that they’re his brothers, for they’ve gone through the same things as him. To that same end, although I identify as Asian, people of full Asian descent might not consider me such because culturally I’m not the same. I’m the first to jump on racist comments, but I think aside from the word impostor, he was right on.

You may well empathize with him and it may well have been a poor choice of words. But it was an idiotic statement to make ! I mean, if Torii Hunter wants to do something proactive about the situation , then the thing would be to work in conjunction with the hierarchy of baseball in order to change that the sad state of affairs as it relates to young African American males within the game. Instead he comes off sounding like a bigot as to how unintelligent he is. It’s a sad state of affairs when continually African American male professionals in sports come off looking like complete as_holes ! And that’s how Hunter now looks , even though he now states that it wasn’t meant to be racist statement.

A number Latin players may not be offended but he obviously hasn’t taken into account the Latin fans who love the game. And he’s offered them no apology for the words uttered as a matter or act of contrition .

Hunter is simply showing that the credo ‘ a mind is a terrible thing to waste’ when he make such an asinine statement and then doesn’t even have the decency to apologize for it. It’s an affront to the Latino players and their fans but also to the likes of Willie Mays , Aaron, Banks and many of his African American predecessors who paved the way for him. But alas , like I said he’s not that bright to begin with.
