The What If Scenario ……………………

The What If Scenario ………………….

It’d appears that the Defense Department under Secretary Robert Gates is unsure whether or not the ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy’ as it refers to gays in the military is in need of repeal . Though the decision itself will come down to a vote within both legislative houses of the government and then will need President Barack Obama’s signature as to it still being a statute in remaining legal. Now far be it for me to suggest but a person’s sexuality as it relates to the military, shouldn’t at all have a bearing as to that person’s wish to serve their country. If they’re prepared to serve in battle and shed their blood , then it ought not to have a bearing at all. But we’re given to believe that having a person who’s gay, would hurt the morale of the military, is completely asinine. A gay person’s blood is just as red as yours or mine for that matter. And death for them is no different from anyone else who happens to die in conflict on the battlefield. This is just simply about one’s right to serve but a matter of respect and the wish to be included rather than being ostracized .

The two are at odds with senior members of the military and some conservatives within their respective political parties as to whether or not the military's 'don't ask don't tell policy' ought to be re-enacted. photo appears courtesy of telegraph.co.uk copyrighted material ..... @ all rights reserved

Consider this, the military is serious need of individuals with specialist skills such as linguists , in particular those who speak many of the dialects of the Far and Middle East. And given the fact that in the State Department , CIA and FBI are also in need of linguists where their specialized language needs would be in Urdu , Farsi , Pashtun , Arabic , Mandarin and Tagalog. But simply put , the neo-conservatives are scared that the perception of a homosexuals serving in the military weakens morale. Let me ask you this, once a soldier comes home in a body bag does anyone question his sexuality ?

And another thing , we’ve all seen the protesters at the funerals of bereaved men and women being laid to rest and there they are these protesting that the soldiers who’ve sacrificed their lives willingly, so that they can live free. They can also be seen from time to time protesting outside of veterans’ administration facilities such as hospitals rehabilitation centers. Well , it’s their view that this is God’s will because he views homosexuality as a sin and that they’re deserving of such a fate. God knows , such individuals with that amount of hatred within them aren’t deserving of the right known as ‘freedom of speech’. It may well be an inalienable right but I’ll be damned to sit by and have these assholes desecrate the bravery of these men and women , no matter what their sexuality !

We’ve all witnessed the controversy that has been derived from the use of illicit substances within sports. Players have simply cheated , and their respective governing bodies stood by and when it came to meting out a justifiable form of punishment. But what we’ve now seeing from the various hierarchies is simply another form of cowardice of the highest order. Instead of doing what’s right they’d rather simply save face in terms of their public image.

Now in sports would there be an open outcry if we were to have an openly gay male athlete now competing within MLB , NBA , NFL , NHL or MLS for that matter. We know that there are female competitors on the LPGA Tour and WTA Tour (women’s tennis). But we’ve yet to see an openly gay male athlete come out and declare his sexuality while still competing . Obviously, the fear of being ostracized would have something to do with it. But if the thinking is the same in the military that an athlete can’t do their job as a military serviceman or woman . Then what does it say about us as a society ?

Former NFL star Esera Tuaolo who played in the NFL for several seasons , having played for the Atlanta Falcons , Carolina Panthers Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The former defensive lineman and nose tackle retired from the game 2002. He declared his homosexuality after his retirement , making him only the third former NFL player behind David Kopay and Roy Simmons to have ‘come out of the closet.’ Tuaolo made it clear that one of the reasons for doing so, was in fact that he no longer wanted to ‘live a lie’ and that in doing so it’d give him a chance to educate others . Especially having seen and heard what he stated were the defamatory remarks jokes that were being made in the locker rooms and on the field .

Whether or not the male dominated bastioned arena can withstand a player coming out while his career is still ongoing remains to be seen . But clearly there is a great deal of fear for any male player who’s hiding their sexuality for fear of the backlash that would be forthcoming. We know that within women’s sports that situation isn’t as fearful. And if anything it’s now more common place as it’s not really frowned upon. If anything it’s embraced even more so within that sorority and the landscape of women’s sports. And there’s evidence to suggest that with the declaration made by former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes .

Former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes and her partner Alisia Scott . The two women co-share the custody of Swoopes' children with Sheryl's ex-husband. Will there be a time that we’ll see a current male athlete come and declare himself to be homosexual without the fear of a backlash ? Or will we continue just continue to make it a scourge and that as such these individuals cannot and will not be tolerated within the social landscape. We’ve all seen the retribution that can be meted out in its most heinous form in the violent death of Matthew Shepard at the hands of gay bashers. And given what we’ve also seen from the protesters who’ve festooned themselves at the funerals of veterans from both Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts. It now has me thinking if the what if scenario concerning a male athlete ‘coming out’ would at all be tolerated in this day and age ?

  1. Great piece, Al. I was just having this conversation the other day. Which institution is more intolerant of homosexuality: the military or organized professional (male) sports?

And I’d hate to say it but I think it’s professional sports.

Of all the minorities, homosexuals might just have it the worst.

One day, we’ll all open our minds… but I fear that day isn’t coming any time soon.

If this country simply hasn’t moved yet beyond the ‘civil rights era’ then what makes you think one day it’ll have an open mind ? I can tell you this when Obama got elected it pissed far more Caucasians than most would care to admit . They never thought that they’d see the day where an African American would hold the ‘highest political office’ in the land. And I’d dare say it wasn’t something that the ‘Founding Fathers’ who wrote the ‘US Constitution’ had in mind either ?

So let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves in thinking things have changed all that much. There’s still a great social and racial divide in this country not just against homosexuals but also minorities. I mean if you don’t still think that the Native American Indians are still being shat on by the government then you’re in complete denial .

I’m not against ‘free speech’ but I’d be damned if I’ll have some religious intolerant bigot shouting down and berating the family of an army vet that has sacrificed their life for others who are now treating their death as if it were in vain and part of God’s plan. That’s a fu_king asinine notion. This just goes to show that these individuals simply don’t practice what’s in the Bible to begin with.

God’s retribution on their ass I hope will be equally as righteous. May they simply burn in hell !

Elijah Cummings who was the recipient of the abuse is one of the few African American politicians and advocates that I actually have time for. He’s still very much a principled human being . And being inside Congress hasn’t changed him at all.

  2. It must be pretty tough for athlete’s with that dilemma to come out of the closet. If it were me, I’d probably stay in the closet to avoid trash talking on the field/court. I’m sure some would understand, yet others would ridicule, and due to their own ignorance. Then again if I was a defensive football player that was gay, I’d probably make weird comments whenever I tackled someone!

If you think it’s tough for the athlete then think again. How do you think it must feel for a military serviceman or woman ? Why aren’t they afforded the same rights in serving their country without their sexuality coming into play ? When a soldier is wounded on the battlefield is the color of their blood different from that of homosexual or lesbian ?

And in the endeavor of athletics what damn difference does it really make ? If the athlete is performing at their optimum best then shouldn’t make a blind bit of difference to anyone.

I knew that when I was in the military I was serving alongside guys who might’ve been gay. But my concern was whether or when we came under fire he would be there to protect the rest of his comrades as he was meant to ? That’s what counts with me at the end of the day.

Normally the only people who tend not to understand are the ones who are just simply bigoted or they simply hate gays and lesbians. And when it comes to the corporate titans on Madison Ave. Their only concern is how much money that they’ll be able to make and whether or not that person’s image hurts their product brand and label.

  3. I have one for your consideration. I have claimed and still do that those who are so homophobic have doubts about their own sexuality. It has been noted by various mental health types who studied the “problem”…a lot contend that hose homophobes who act out in aggressive manners are “latent” homosexuals.
Thos going around screaming that they are straight might well not be thus. I am liberal enough to give the “devil” his due…just leave me out of the equation.
One thing that makes me laugh is the guy giving it up the rear…just tighter than a “real” woman; the female who gets boned by a dildo..same as a man giving it to her…..I know, I know, it’s a cross-gender brain thing…I just find it funny.
But……it is time to let “sleeping dogs” lie, why should one care one way or the other?

The real problem here is that these idiots in the upper echelons of the military seem to think that this will have effect on morale ? Since when did one spilling one’s blood in the service of their country have anything to do with one’s sexuality ?

The Defense Dept and Gates shouldn’t be in a place such as this. They need all of the personnel and experts that they need in the various areas and the same can be said of the FBI State Dept , CIA and Homeland Security .

In the area of sports we know that on the male dominated landscape it won’t be tolerated. And the athletes fear being ostracized if they’re still a professional. But by my way of thinking it shouldn’t matter at all. All that’s being asked of them as an athlete is to simply to go out there and to perform at their level best.

For the women it’s not so bad as there’ve already been women that’ve broken that social barrier. Martina Navritilova , Billie Jean King , Amelie Mauresmo and Sheryl Swoopes.

One more thing what I’d like to see is for those religious bigots to simply take a look at themselves in the mirror. Because it’s clear that they’ve no damn common sense or intelligence in denigrating the death of a fallen military soldier by stating it’s God will and the fact that the country has adopted the homosexual lifestyle . WTF is wrong with those as_holes ?

I don’t believe that they’ve doubts . I think it all comes down to a lack of understanding and compassion. I’m of the belief that if you don’t understand something and you make a choice not to learn then in the end you fear it and you show that in your bigotry. I work with and have friends who are homosexual. I don’t count them anytheless than the other friends or acquaintances that I have. I’d dare say that while I was in the military there may well have been guys there that I’d served with who may well have been homosexuals. Sh_t like that , you’re not overly concerned with when you’re actually on the field of battle or part of a military exercise.

There’s nothing rough about it you either have respect for them or you don’t . If they’re good enough to die with honor on the battlefield then why can’t they be allowed to live a normal life in civilian society ?
