Is There A Tinge Of Doubt At The Moment ….. ?

I don’t know that the Los Angeles Lakers’ fans should have some doubt at the moment as to the legitimacy of the team’s effort in making it to the Western Conference Finals . But I for one believe that their coach Phil Jackson is very much concerned but he’s not intent on showing it. This much I do believe, ‘this team’ is nowhere as good as the one, that won the 2009 NBA Finals in defeating the Orlando Magic with relative ease !

Los Angeles ,Ca,. Carlos Boozer (5) of the Utah Jazz has his shot challenged by Kobe Bryant (24) of the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on April 2, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. One of the reasons why I state the team isn’t as good as last year’s victorious roster. Well the addition of Ron Artest to my mind has led to subtraction by addition ! There isn’t as much cohesiveness about the unit as last year’s ensemble. The loss of Trevor Ariza is far more than anyone within the Lakers’ front office , coaching staff or players would care to admit. They in essence sold their ‘soul to the Devil’ in obtaining Artest. And in return, there’s been little to show tangibly from the player in terms of his efforts. OK, so some will say that it takes time to acclimatize to new surroundings and a new cast of teammates. But given the fact that Artest is a seasoned veteran, rather than a rookie. What we’re now seeing from the player is a great deal of inconsistency and the mere fact that he’s become more of a liability to the team, rather than the asset that they’d hoped for. Ariza who signed with Artest’s former team the Houston Rocket , is having a rather solid season playing alongside Luis Scola , Aaron Brooks and a solid core of players that make up this Rocket’s team . And at the same time this Rick Adelman coached roster has played themselves into contention for a playoff berth .

Now there’s a great reason to show some cause for concern if you’re undoubted Lakers’ fan. Guard Kobe Bryant is playing injured (broken index finger-on his right hand and dislocated finger on the right) and once again it looks like the team’s center Andrew Bynum just can’t seem to stay fit long enough, to contribute with any great consistency to the team. And though they lead the conference and their division by a fairly wide margin. You get the feeling that another serious injury to any of the other front line players on the roster and the Lakers’ season could completely spiral out of control. The team’s bench has become their Achilles’ heel and anyone who believes that they have “the best bench” in the entire NBA is in need of treatment from Dr Drew Pinsky . Rehab anyone ?

Lakers sign Bryant to 3-year extension

El Segundo , California (AP)—Kobe Bryant(notes) is staying with the Los Angeles Lakers for another three years.

The deal announced Friday will begin after next season. Bryant is making $23 million this season and is due to earn $24.8 million next season.

“It’s very rare to have a player play his entire career in one city, so I’m very excited,” he said after the Lakers beat Utah 106-92.

Bryant would earn $27.4 million in 2011-12, $30.2 million the following season and more than $32 million in his final year, when he would be 35.

“Good news,” coach Phil Jackson said. “I expected that Kobe would sign. It’s a good choice for him and the organization.”

The deal means the Lakers achieved two main objectives going into the season — signing Bryant and Pau Gasol(notes) to extensions.

“We were able to accomplish those goals, helping to keep the core of this team intact for the foreseeable future and in turn help to ensure the franchise’s continued success over the years to come,” General manager Mitch Kupchak said Friday on the team’s Web site.

Gasol signed earlier in the season.

The 31-year Bryant could have terminated the last two years of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent last July. He could have secured a new, longer deal if he had opted out, but he wouldn’t have necessarily made more money.

Now we can all attest to the fact this Lakers’ team has been the best within their conference by a convincingly wide margin. But at the same time as with any team they will have their struggles when faced with a certain amount of adversity. And that is to be expected because that is what delineates and separates the good teams from the bad. The bad teams don’t know how to adapt and overcome adversity. The good teams always tend to find a way and that all comes down the experience of the players and that of the coaching staff in place. And in Phil Jackson and his staff where’s ably abetted by Frank Hamblen , Brian Shaw and Jim Cleamons as his chief subordinates. Jackson could not have found anyone better to have assisted him in the task. The game of basketball isn’t merely about what goes on , on the court but it’s also about what the coaches instill into the heads of the players in terms of their competitiveness and playing abilities. This is where the advantage lies with the Lakers ahead of the rest of NBA. Phil Jackson is as astute a coach as there is , involved in any team sport. He ranks up there alongside the likes of Lombardi , Auerbach , Bowman and John Wooden . But today where one’s every move is judged and singled out by every tv analyst , pundit , columnist and fan out there. There’s got to be a time where the coach himself has to be wondering whether or not it’s all worth it. And for Jackson , that answer is probably yes. He’s the flag bearer by which every NBA coach is now judged whether they like it or not. Jackson’s success proves that point .

As it now stands I do expect the Lakers to make it to the Western Conference Finals. But in all honesty their recent form (5-5) has me rethinking whether not they’ll be the conference representatives in the upcoming NBA Finals. This is much is true , without a completely healthy Bynum and Bryant this team’s chances of repeating as NBA champions is greatly diminished. And without Bryant as its figure head and vocal leader on and off the court they become nothing more than an average team, at best ! And average teams simply no longer win NBA championships in this day and age. If that were the case then it’d show mediocre the brand and product had become in the NBA. And that’s not something that either David Stern or the NBA hierarchy would like to see at this particular moment in time. Especially not with several teams around the league struggling financially , simply to stay afloat.

When the Lakers or Boston Celtics are riding high then it makes for a better NBA brand and product out there for the consumer to part-take of and enjoy. And though we’ve seen the rise of the LeBron James’ led Cleveland Cavaliers . Until James and his teammates are winning championships on a regular basise or are perennial contenders. Then he’ll just be seen as another ‘prodigy’ and not much else. I think that’s pretty fair to say about LeBron at this juncture don’t you think ?

  1. Without sounding like too much of a homer, I REALLY like the Magic this year.

That is one tough team and they will be a DIFFICULT out this year.

I know you think the Mavs are soft (they are) but at this point of the season, for Orlando to go in there on Thursday and beat them from start to finish is still an impressive feat.

Cleveland may boast the league’s best record but I think Orlando is the better “team.”

The Mavs are soft and they have no character or leadership . on that team ! We’re seeing them now fall aside and as the likes of Utah and others start to eat away at the lead they once had in the Western Conference . I’d really like to know what it is that people see in this team ? They’re far too easily swept up by the numbers rather than their actual pedigree and what they’ve achieved . Which to date is one NBA Final wherein , they had their ass handed to them by the Heat and D-Wade . Can put it anymore succinctly than that can I ?

Manu dropped the bomb 43 pts on Orlando last night and it showed that the Spurs aren’t to be overlooked at at all. Each of the top teams in the East have their flaws . But it'll come down to who does best to keep those flaws from being their Achilles' heel.

The conference is still Cleveland’s to lose . I’ll stick with that right into the playoffs. And then we can take it from there.

    I missed that Ginobili performance.

I’m not making excuses but we both know back-to-backers on that Texas road trip ain’t easy.

    But still. 43?!?

I’d have paid good money to hear Van Gundy’s closed door post-game rant.

I’m not saying Van Gundy was angry but someone made a joke about him looking like Ron Jeremy and he got completely bent out of shape . Think how Ron Jeremy must’ve felt ?

Both have been known to make a woman cry. But in Stan’s case he tends to cry like a woman when things don’t go the Magic’s way ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!!

Stan Ron, Ron and Stan . Who indeed has had the better career and life so far ? Make your pick and let me know the reasons why ?

Don’t know about lookers ! But I think that Ron may well have had the more successful career thus far ! Stan is still in the midst of writing his legacy as it concerns the NBA.

First of all thanks for chiming in with a comment. And yes that’s my belief concerning Artest as he’s nowhere near the player that most Lakers’ fans thought that they’d be getting. Like I said in a previous comment the ‘intimidation factor’ with isn’t there at all. He’s about as intimidating as Ricky Martin would be to a bunch of a homosexuals in a locked room.

This Lakers’ team sorely misses Trevor Ariza . The stupidity of their ‘front office’ is now there for all to see. They (Lakers) sign Artest to a contract but Ariza goes to the Rockets and signs a deal that pays him a similar amount per year but over a longer period in terms of the contracts length. You’re telling me that they couldn’t afford to sign him given their vast financial resources ?

  3. If not the Lakers in the west, then who?

Denver is suffering without George Karl, Phoenix is Phoenix -great regular seasaon team but might as well be the Clippers in the playoffs. Dallas is soft as Charmin, Portland is good but still not ready for prime time, Utah can’t hang and though I respect San Antonio, I just can’t see them getting past L.A. without a fully healthy Tony Parker.
    That leaves Oklahoma City.

They might just be young and cocky enough to challenge the Lakers, not realizing that they just aren’t supposed to be able to do it. Seriously, the Thunder are the only legit challenger if only based on being inexperienced enough to not take into account the magnitude of the moment.

Kobe’s broken finger is actually on his right hand…his shooting hand…the same one with the detached pinky. He’s killing the league with half a good hand.

Artest may not be the impact player he once was but he provides steady defense…lock down defense at times. His impact comes more as an intimidation…his bulky frame wears on players more than Trevor’s steals and quickness. In a seven game series, the player being guarded by Ron will KNOW it by the way his body aches the next day. He’s only 6’7″ but outweighs Gasol.

Bynum had a very productive season before the Achilles injury. He’s not a superstar but he is an able bodied, legitimate NBA center who can score. I do wish he was more assertive on defense and rebounding but he’s still growing as a player and is expected to return healthy in the next few games.

Fish may be a step slower but rest assured, he will again make his mark in the playoffs with a big shot at a crucial moment again this year. Mark my words.

The bench isn’t great but any team in the NBA would love to look at their bench and see Lamar Odom available.
Consistent?…No…..But…When they play halfway decent the Lakers are the best team in the league. Los Angeles has coasted through the regular season in anticipation of the playoffs. I’m not saying the rollercoaster ride will change all of a sudden, they will still frustrate fans with their up and down effort, but when they have to win, they will show up. Phil will pull the tape of the 2008 NBA Finals loss to Boston to remind them of how bad losing feels as a motivator if necessary.

Barring injury to any key players I expect the Lakers win another title this year.

…Then again, you knew that already didn’t you?

First of all thanks on the oversight on my part. And you’re right it shouldn’t be a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ ? That being said the Lakers haven’t been playing as consistently as ‘one would’ve come to expect’. But the other thing is how many times does Lamar come to work with his ‘lunch bucket and pail’ and actually “come to play ? It’s not as if he does that on a regular basis to begin with ? So let’s not kid ourselves here. Artest is about as much an intimidation factor as Ricky Martin would be to a bunch of homosexuals were he locked in a room with them . That’s a laughable assumption on your part to begin with. He’s (Artest) stealing money from the Lakers and you damn well know it.

Hopefully not one of your favorites by Ricky ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!! Or is it Living La Vida Loca ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!!

Who knew that Ricky would come out of the closet the way that he did ? Does that mean that he and George Michael will share a cubicle of a men’s rest room while recording a duet to test the acoustics and whatever else that pops up in conversation ?

Oh my its George ‘I’ll spot your d-ck for my mine’ Michael.

The Thunder can give any of the teams in the West that’ll make the playoffs a real run for their money ! They’re not afraid of any of those teams and Durant and Westbrook have proved that by giving them all a scare.

The real part to the NBA season will begin with the playoffs . So let the fun begin with.

Just what every male Lakers’ fan need to give them that warm fuzzy feeling each day a dose of Ayda Field (comedienne & actress).

That’s why Ron’s presence was really felt today in that Lakers’ 100-81 loss to the Spurs . I mean those 8 pts were really invaluable ? Defensive presence ? A used female hygiene product could’ve shown more presence than he did . LOL,LOL,LOL !!

The Spurs and Thunder are the teams that others in the West really need to fear. And with Parker definitely coming back by the playoffs then it will be great for us Spurs’ fans !

How much do you hate Kobe and the rest of the Lakers ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!! Is it because you missed out on gettin’ “some tail” off Kobe’s wife Vanessa ? Inquiring minds need to know ! Or could it be that you have an ulterior motive altogether ?

Denise Faye & Lisa Arturo in a scene from ‘American Pie’. What’s not to like if they allow you to part-take of the pleasure ?

Remember the scene from the movie ? ‘You strip , we strip’ .

I mean you could’ve gone the ‘triple decker route’ and invite the chicks from ‘American Pie’ . Then you could’ve had some real fun if you know what I mean ?

You know that Vanessa wouldn’t mind if ‘your balls’ were resting on her chin. Whereas, Kobe is always bouncing his up and down the court. Simply put , Vanessa ain’t gettin’ enough !
You’re gonna have to oblige and give her some good lovin’ .
