The Walk Of Shame Or Walk Of Fame As The Case Maybe ……

By tophatal …..

Candidly over the remainder of this NFL season there are bound to be a number of coaches and their staffs whose jobs will no doubt be on the line . I’m not so sure that I would not be entirely at all surprised if the likes of Norv Turner , and quite possibly Raheem Morris are shown the door by their respective team owners .

Throughout much of this season the teams have simply labored with the exception of the . Green Bay Packers , New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers . Albeit , that fans might be of the opion that the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans are worthy of being mentioned amongst the so called “elite teams “ within the NFL this year . Given the uncertainty and displays we have seen from players has me wondering whether or not it has been the poor coaching within the NFL or the fact that the the league induced work stoppage has been one of the main culprits in somewhat of an average season . Of course there has been the injury bug that has seen the likes of Pro Bowl caliber players Peyton Manning , Matt Schaub , Adrian Peterson and several other notable players sidelined on the injured reserve list for much this regular season .

Drew Brees cast his names amongst the greats of the game with his assault on Dan Marino’s single season passing yards’ (5084 yds) record . The New Orleans Saints’ quarterback can add to that tally in his team’s final regular season scheduled game of the season against divisional rivals the Carolina Panthers whom they host at the Mercedes Benz Superdome , in New Orleans, Louisiana on New Year’s Day .

Sean Payton knows that should the Saints win and the San Francisco 49ers lose in their regular season finale against the St Louis Rams , whom Steve Spagnuolo’s team will host in St Louis , Missouri . Then the New Orleans Saints would wrap up the second seed berth within the NFC and obtain themselves a bye in the first round of the NFL playoffs .

The highly anticipated potential NFC championship game matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints would be an enviable event me that would obviously wet the appetite of the most ardent of offense minded fans , especially when one takes into account that these are two of the most explosive and potently efficient teams within the NFC and league as a whole in terms offense . Quarterbacks Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers rank at the top or near the top in practically all of the most important categories that matter within the NFL at the position . Simply put , Brees and Rodgers arguably have been the two best quarterbacks within the NFL this season , bar none ! OK , so the purists out there will argue that were Peyton Manning not injured , then perhaps we would have seen the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback putting up the usual numbers we are accustomed to seeing from the four time league MVP . Not to be outdone in the conversation perhaps, would be Tom Brady of the New England Patriots whose current consecutive game win streak now stands at seven games .

Now while it would be easy to regale you all with the why’s and where for’s as to the merits of the teams within the upper echelons of the NFL this season . It has to be said that the teams at the lower end of the scale have been extremely disappointing to say the very least . Perhaps , none more so than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Without a doubt this team led by head coach Raheem Morris and his coaching staff over achieved last season when the team came within a hair’s breath of making the playoffs .

This season however , the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have simply been woefully inept in just about every major facet of the game . Josh Freeman the team’s quarterback is having a down year in comparison to last season when he led team with his last minute heroics in a number of games last season .

Team GM Mark Dominik of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has to be tremendously disappointed with the team’s displays throughout much of this season . And it certainly hasn’t helped that seasoned veterans such as Ronde Barber and Kellen Winslow Jr have simply remained silent , rather than leading by example , by being vocal with the younger players on this roster . All of the rhetoric forthcoming from Raheem Morris as to his own expectations are rather inane , when there seems to be no improvement whatsoever coming from this team over the course of the season . If LeGarette Blount cannot produce the form from last season that made him such a consistent threat , then there seems to be little hope for the Buccaneers’ offense . And one might add that the DNA that is said to personify this organization ______ ” team defense” is nowhere to be seen throughout much of this season . So much so , that in all probability the fans must yearn for the years when Tony Dungy whose coaching premise was …… ” defense , defense , defense and more defense ” but also more accountability amongst the players on his teams. Instead with this current Buccaneers’ roster , it is simply the players going through the motions while being compensated greatly , way beyond what they might rightfully deserve .

For a team with postseason aspirations at the start of the season the issues that the Buccaneers have faced far outweigh whatever Raheem Morris felt what he would actually achieve . All of the bravado cannot hide Morris’ inexperience and his having been thrust into the lion’s den by Mark Dominik and the Glazer family simply lent credence to the fact the owners are back to their ways of old by doing things on the cheap. If anything it’s my belief that the Malcolm Glazer as patriarch of the family is far more concerned and interested in his holdings within English Premiership (EPL) soccer team Manchester United whose ownership has been in his tenure since 2005 . The club bought at a cost of some $1.55 billion ($1,550,000,000) with a leveraged buyout in using the team primarily as collateral along with other derivative financing still has left a burgeoning hole within United’s coffers . The club is still debt laden , albeit , that the franchise is amongst the most popular and profitable sporting concerns in the world but by the wrath of the Red Devils’ fans were met met with muted silence when Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to leave the team for a then world record price of $190 million as a transfer fee , the Portuguese payer would join Spanish giants Real Madrid of the Spanish first division ( La Liga) .

The English soccer team has a mounting debt which the executives of the club have sought to refinance without a great deal of success . But what might now be even more pertinent is that with UEFA set to bring in new regulations concerning teams participating in their competitions .specifically . in the Champions League , Europe’s top international club competition . It is imperative that Manchester United does as much as it it can, as expediently as it can to place its financial house in order . If not , then the monies that can be attained through this competition would be of no avail. It is estimated that entire participation for a team in the Champions League deep into the competition’s latter stages can net that club in excess of $50- $75 million per season . A bounty far too easy to overlook for a club of United’s prominence on the world’s soccer stage. With so many wealthy US owners now diving into owning an English Premiership soccer team you simply knew it was only a matter of time before their impudence and sheer stupidity would run amok and start to ruin “the beautiful game” ! Stanley Kroenke , Randy Lerner , LeBron James , John Henry , CEO of Fenway Sports Group [FSG] ( owners of the Boston Red Sox and co-owners of Roush Fenway Racing Inc ( NASCAR ” Sprint Cup Series”) to name but a few have now stepped into the fray as part of the cabal of Americans who have an outright or a majority stake in a Premiership soccer club. Need I say anymore on the matter at this juncture , given the state of a number of NFL and NBA franchises and their present financial state ? Rarely are those teams’ books opened up for public scrutiny and as we all know neither David Stern or Roger Goodell are prepared to do that , not without a major fight . >

I am of the opinion that Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ ownership group simply bought their way to the Superbowl , profited greatly from that experience but then simply ” dropped the ball” with regard to the organization’s then immediate future . . Let’s put this way , anyone expecting then head coach Jon Gruden to lead the organization to further success , clearly misjudged the credibility and credentials of the former head coach . Gruden’s successor Raheem Morris a mere novice , is now proving to be something of a dud , with the the intellectual mindset of a gnat !

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers having lost nine straight games over their last ten regularly season scheduled , one can understand the plight of Morris , and his coaching staff as well as that of the team . Angst and anxiety doesn’t come close to describing how much of a mess this club has become . Lacking in confidence , lacking in talent but above all lacking a coach with the determination and will to win ! Instead as I alluded to earlier this season has one of being simple asinine sound bytes from the head coach and general manager , Mark Dominik . If nothing else the fans now have the ignominy of either witnessing a tenth straight loss or that improbable win when the Buccaneers face divisional rivals the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta , this upcoming Sunday afternoon on New Year’s Day . I’m sure that Falcons’ coach Mike Smith and his team have no wish make their hometown fans disappointed with a vapid display as they seek to further enmesh themselves within the playoff picture .

If this Buccaneers’ team is to have any chance of defeating the Falcons then they will have to give a display far more befitting of themselves rather than what their fans have been accustomed to seeing this season . At 4-11 this record clearly reflects a team that has lost much of the ground it attained last season when they were indeed a surprise to many of their peers around the NFL . That being said , 2011 has been one of missed opportunities for this organization and one again another relearning process begins . A number of players on this current roster will become superfluous to the team’s needs and it will most certainly mean that a number of them will not be re-signed .

Now whether or not Raheem Morris retains his position as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remains to be seen . What might well be the determining factor is whether not the Glazer family will risk further ridicule in firing the incumbent coach , knowing full well they are still paying Jon Gruden $4.5 million as part of the final year of his contract (expires at the end of 2012) having fired him back in 2009 . Should Bryan Glazer follow suit having conferred with Mark Dominik then it leaves this organization in a such a situation that would make it extremely improbable that any potential hire would be willing to become a possible candidate for as the successor to Raheem Morris . The front office would be left having to now pay two coaches no longer in their employ as well as a new head coach . From my own perspective, I believe that Morris will be given the chance to “right this ship “ but it is becoming increasingly clear that this could very well be his last chance to redeem his credibility as well as that of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers .

In your opinion what if anything has been the most pleasant surprise or disappointment to you within the turmoil of the NFL this season ? Do take into account the league mandated stoppage which obviously derailed somewhat the effort of some teams in their preparedness for this all too normally rigorous schedule . Simply chime in with a comment as you see fit .

The struggle to succeed at any endeavor is always a daunting task and nowhere can this be more self evident perhaps than within the collegiate and professional sporting ranks . That being said , given the scandals that have plagued collegiate sports this season and the seemingly idiotic stance taken by the trustees and senior faculty members , I think it would suggest that greed and the financial maelstrom that can be caused when an esteemed educational establishment is at the center of a major event tends not to deflect much of misdeeds that may well have taken place . Beyond that , when we simply know that these officials placed in a position of power , either choose not to take responsibility for their actions or be held accountable , it begs the question why are there members of the public out there looking to make light or in some cases looking to defend the indefensible ?

For much of this season within the NFL we have seen teams simply struggle to make their presence felt while others seemed to have risen like a phoenix to make themselves credible contenders this season within the league . Who could have foreseen that the Indianapolis Colts (2-13) would be the cellar dwellers in terms of their NFL record ? That being said the rambunctious Rex Ryan and his band of over-hyped , overpaid and always demonstrative New York Jets’ team will be left seated at the table often made use of by ” hobos ” we often see roadside , begging for food . Could not have happened to a nicer organization to my mind ! Not to be left out of this menagerie of under-achieving miscreants are Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles , a team , whom if anything is more deserving of being best described as a ” dung heap ” that is so odious and thought defying that any mention of the Eagles ought to be associated with the sign “buyer beware not as good as advertized ” .

Now for every team that’s said to have been a pleasant surprise within the NFL this season I think we would be hard pressed to believe that the Detroit Lions this season would have actually made the postseason given their record over the last few years and their now infamous 2008 season during which they went a hapless 0-16 . Well, Lions’ head coach Jim Schwartz now seems to have turned the corner and those troubled years when Matt Millen was at the helm of the organization as its general manager now seems all but a distant memory . If only the Ford family at the time had the damn common sense to get rid of his ass instead of watching the franchise flounder needlessly for a number of years !

This season for the Detroit Lions it has been about the rejuvenated and injury free Matt Stafford and the talents of his all purpose wide receiver Calvin ” Megatron” Johnson . Granted , the team has had to play second fiddle to the Green Bay Packers within the NFC North , but which team hasn’t had to play that role over the course Packers’ schedule with the exception of the Kansas City Chiefs during Week 15 ?

The Detroit Lions having garnered their first postseason berth in just over decade , now have something look forward to whilst delighting their most loyal fans during the playoffs . The team is liable to be a handful for any first round opponent during the wild-card round .

If the Detroit Lions were said to be one of the big NFL surprises of the season then what can one say about the San Francisco 49ers under the coaching philosophy of Jim Harbaugh and the unexpected play of Alex Smith helming this team at the quarterback position ? Now while Smith has simply been exemplary this season for the Niners it has been the play of both Patrick Willis and Frank Gore who if anything have been the workhorses for this team. Smith like his NFC counterpart Matt Stafford could very well be the nominees for the Comeback Player of The Year Award .

Call me naive but is Brian Urlacher that much of a dumb ass ? OK , so your Chicago Bears’ .. team gets beat at the hands the Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow . That being said the Bears this season much like the fortunes of their none too deserving quarterback Jay Cutler can simply be summed up by the word “pathetic” and as morose and under-achieving as this has been , no one is more to blame than Urlacher and the coaching staff led by head coach Lovie Smith . That being said GM Jerry Angelo must be one of the dumbest and front office executives in the NFL currently at this juncture ! .

Now I understand that both Cutler and perhaps the team’s best offensive weapon Matt Forte are lost to the roster for rest of the regular season but that should not negate the fact that when called upon the Chicago Bears have been woefully inept . If Gerry Angelo knows what is good for this organization then he had better open up the team’s pocket book and pay Forte what he totally deserves .

As an avid New England Patriots’ fan I can say that I am happy they have won the AFC East but here all of the hoopla ends as the team’s defense has been an abomination to observe over the course of this season . Head coach Bill Belichick often the defense minded guru but over the course of the team’s schedule his tinkering with the defense hasn’t really produced a thoroughly consistent or convincing display . That being said the the offense has been as explosive as ever , led with gusto by tight end Rob Gronkowski , Aaron Hernandez , Benjarvus Green-Ellis , , Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead .

The New England Patriots go into the postseason as the number one seed in the AFC but if the truth be known if this team and specifically its defense isn’t playing at high caliber then their foray during the playoffs could be very much a short-lived one at the very least . As the number one seed within the conference they now have the Houston Texans , Baltimore Ravens , the ongoing duel within the AFC West between the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders for divisional supremacy . If nothing else the drama yet to be played within the division will be something of an indicator as to what we ought to expect from the two teams as they set about trying to determine their respective fates as it relates to their postseason ambitions . For John Fox and Hu Jackson this may well go a long way in determining their credibility as NFL head coaches .

How is it that opponents from the ” Left” and ” Right “ seem to dislike each other with such immense anger ? Never mind the fact that those on the opposing sides of religion in terms of atheists and believers are simply no different from one another ! The verbiage and pomposity between the two sides can be downright ridiculous to the extent that it becomes so boring ! My reasons for this , is simply the latest along the lines amongst the Tim Tebow ” worshipers” and those who view the player simply as an athlete and in some respects no different from any other human being who can be criticized when performing poorly . In what now appears to downright angst and anger , Christian conservatives are said to be calling for a boycott of comedian Bill Maher’s acerbic and very funny program “Real Time With Bill Maher” which is shown on the premium cable channel HBO .

The comedian , Maher was critical of Tim Tebow’s performance in the Denver Broncos’ loss to AFC rivals Buffalo Bills ……. 40-14 . Anyone who witnessed the quarterback’s play on the day will certainly know that Tim Tebow did not have a good game at all and neither did his teammates . If truth be known it was an atrocious display from a team that is said to have postseason aspirations and is currently in a dogfight in terms trying to secure winning the AFC West over divisional rivals the Oakland Raiders (8-7).

Bill Maher taking heat for Christmas tweet about Tim Tebow

By Tom Weir , USA Today

Bill Maher would be well advised to not attend Denver Broncos games.

The comedian is taking significant heat after weighing in with a sarcastic tweet on Tim Tebow’s hellish performance over the weekend against Buffalo.

Entertainment Weekly reported Maher invoked Tebow, Jesus and even Hitler in his sarcastic summation of Tebow’s performance against Buffalo, writing that:

“Wow, Jesus just f—– #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler “Hey, Buffalo’s killing them,” Maher tweeted.

The TV show says Maher has been widely slammed for the remark, but that Tebow didn’t respond, and kept his tweets focused on more upbeat messages.

If Bill Maher can be criticized with such animus for clearly what is his own view , merely because and the very fact that he’s an atheist ___ then how is that Rush Limbaugh was given such wide latitude with his statements concerning former Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins’ quarterback Donovan McNabb at a time when the player was in a Eagles’ uniform ? Did I actually miss something here , or what ? WTF !

So NBA is off and running and Commissioner David Stern is still looking to save face in light of his lack of communicative skills in the aftermath of the Chris Paul trade debacle . Did I miss something here but wasn’t Stern once a practicing lawyer with a criminal and corporate practice background ? Ah well , it’s common knowledge in a room full of shit and lawyers flushed with freshly sprayed deodorant , you would be hard pressed to differentiate between the odor of the fecal matter and the said ” group of lawyers ” !

With this truncated season schedule of 66 games the league hierarchy is under a great deal of pressure to make sure that the season goes off smoothly . God knows all of the morass created the stupid insatiability of league and the NBPA (union) in bickering like children in a sandbox to determine who has a play toy was beyond belief , especially in light of the fact the union’s executive committee and a number of team owners who are still dissatisfied with the outcome of this new collective bargaining agreement . Anyone who believes that this agreement simply allays the fears of the of the most knowledgeable of fans that the league has won its way back into their and graces makes this whole episode so laughable .

The NBA now has a number of teams simply hemorrhaging red ink amongst their bottom line and I think that simply through apathy on the part of the fan they simply look at the game as the only thing that simply matters. If teams such as the Sacramento Kings , Orlando Magic , Milwaukee Bucks , Washington Wizards and New Orleans Hornets are struggling from a financial standpoint but rarely do the fans seem to show any concern . Prior to their acquisition by the Miami Heat , All Star players , Chris Bosh and LeBron James were much more than simply about the organization seeking to win an NBA title but herein was the main reason behind Pat Riley and Micky Arison’s maneuver , both team president and owner knew that if nothing else the franchise would be once again be well on the way to losing tens of millions of dollars . In the last four years the Miami Heat has lost in excess of $140 million cumulatively , much of that due to the fact that the franchise had struggled to sell out the American Airlines Arena in Miami , Florida . Never mind that the now defunct and bankrupt airline carrier has now filed for bankruptcy protection (Chapter 11) . Naming rights or not , here we see the culmination of a major US corporation falling by the wayside without their executives showing the slightest bit of business acumen in market where it’s known to be cut-throat aviation industry . The NBA in essence has now become that but with the with the slim line in terms of demarcation as the owners and hierarchy now looking to say who may well end up being a sacrificial lamb.

I found it somewhat naive of David Stern to suggest that although five owners actually either abstained or chose to vote in opposition to the league’s new collective bargaining agreement he had the temerity to suggest that all of the owners were in agreement with this vote and its ratification by Billy Hunter , Derek Fisher and the union’s executive committee ! If such prominent owners as Micky Arison and Mark Cuban voted in opposition to this agreement then it would suggest that all is not right within Stern’s empire . As you have observed David Stern’s career as the NBA commissioner do you feel that he has served in the best interests of the league in all of the facets needed ?

As reigning NBA champions obviously the Dallas Mavericks would like to make a successful defense of their NBA title . That being said coach Rick Carlisle and GM Donnie Nelson made the moves they saw fit to bolster the roster from last season’s championship winning team . In comes former Lamar Odom a former Sixth Man of the Year recipient award winner title winner . But the losses of Tyson Chandler , J J Barea and Caron Butler to my mind if anything casts doubt that the Mavericks will be able to make a successful run at defending their title .

In the Mavericks opening night loss to the Miami Heat , the team was defeated by their opponents from last season’s NBA Finals . With back to back games the defending champions now find themselves in an 0-2 start to their season . The Denver Nuggets completely outshone their Western Conference opponents on Tuesday night in defeating the Mavericks 115-93 . Leading scorer for the Dallas Mavericks on the night was Finals’ MVP .. Dirk Nowitzki with 20 points . George Karl’s Nuggets simply took the opportunity to waylay the champions on their way to a lopsided victory with Ty Lawson , Andre Miller , Al Harrington and Danilo Gallinari leading the way in their team’s scoring for this convincing victory over a Mavericks’ team that still may well have been feeling the after effects of their opening night celebration when they raised their championship winning banner at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas , Texas .

As crazy at it now seems I really do feel that this NBA season won’t be as exciting as many may well believe it will be ! Team coaches , general managers , team owners , the league hierarchy and players will be hard pressed to regain the trust of the fans after the league induced work stoppage . It will be also interesting enough to see how the attendance levels for this season’s scheduled games will bear out when measured against last season and that of previous years . That if anything will be more of a determining factor as to whether not the NBA has found favor with the fans in general . The NBA’s corporate partners are still on-board in terms of commercial sponsorship , albeit Michael Bass , SVP of Marketing Marketing Communications and the league’s Harvey Benjamin ,NBA Executive Counsel , Business & Finance have yet to issue a formal public statement as to whether or not the league was affected adversely by the stoppage . We do know that the David Stern as part of the hierarchy’s plea with the union and their unrelenting media spin stated that the league would lose countless millions this season . To my mind , with a downturn in any economy that would be expected but herein lies the stupidity of the NBA in general , whilst the business sentiment around the country was one of belt tightening and sound fiscal policy whilst the league simply took the opposite approach altogether ! Someone , please explain to me how it is that the hierarchy , owners and players could be so naive but at the same time still show so much avarice and contempt for what was happening within their very midst ? Do you have an answer to the league’s apparent stupidity ?

What thoughts if any do you have with regard to the points raised within this piece ? Also in light of this weekend’s schedule within the NFL how do you see some of the games panning out ? And in terms of the NBA do you feel that the league has simply done enough to lure the fans back into their good graces ? By all means do leave a comment as you see fit and once again thanks always for the continued support as it is greatly appreciated !

It’s Not What You Do But The Way That You Do It ….

The NFL season is down to its last two games with pretty much every division being sewn up with the exception of the NFC East . In what is a ” must win game ” for both the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants , the victor will end up be the divisional champion as well as the fourth seed in the NFC .

It would be remiss to suggest that coaches Jason Garrett and Tom Coughlin are under undue pressure , given the respective woes of their teams this season . Anything short of a postseason berth and the fans could very well end up calling for the heads of both coaches. Granted , Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones has steadfastly stood by his young coach and all of his missteps over the course of the season . But you simply cannot deny that Jason Garrett and this team have very much underperformed in spite of the public statements made by the team’s ambitious owner .

It’s hard what to make of the New York Giants this season as Coughlin , his coaching staff and this team have simply once again lured their fans into a fall sense of security . If there’s a Giants’ fan out there who can simply explain to me why and how over the last three seasons this franchise has simply lumbered from one midseason collapse to another without there being any backlash against the players or coaching staff then I am in need of some type of an explanation ! Is ineptitude and apathy par for the course amongst the New York Giants ? Also can we simply get over this idiocy that Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning can now be classified as being amongst the elite players at the position over the course of this season . Nothing at this juncture could be further from the truth and the idiots buying into this idea , I would suggest they simply look at the player’s statistics as to the real worth of the player in spite of his alleged efficiency in the fourth quarter of a game . Manning’s touchdown to interception ratio is 2:1 and that if anything to me is even of a greater bearing on his so called performances rather than this asinine notion as to his overall efficiency. Those mistakes can’t be hidden or deferred by other stats and bear an even greater burden upon a team in terms of losses. Those stats if anything are even more pertinent when one is talking about Eli Manning’s displays this season. That asides beyond his success in the Superbowl (SBXLII) ( SB42) , the player’s aspirations and qualifications are simply borne out by the Manning last name and his riding on that moniker .

The match-up between the Cowboys and Giants as I stated earlier will have a great deal riding on the outcome as it relates to the aspirations at the culmination of the season. From my own perspective I do not believe that either team will prove to be a stern enough test for either the Green Bay Packers , New Orleans Saints or San Francisco 49ers should either of the aforementioned teams be an adversary for either of the duo during the playoffs. Such is my belief that those three teams stand head and shoulders above the rest of the playoff contenders within the conference ! Now all that now awaits the most ardent of NFL fans just happens to be schedule playing itself with all of the drama that we have come to expect that tends to go alongside the uncertainty of the NFL season.

Is it me but are the so called purists within the NFL fraternity that damn naive to think that Drew Brees’ breaking of Dan Marino’s long standing record isn’t of merit ? This idiocy that the records aren’t meant to be broken because of an ever changing area and the evolution of the game somewhat demeans the Saints’ quarterback’s feat this season . But I digress , as the NFL analysts providing the so called analysis and commentary tend to show about as much insight with regard to the game as Paris Hilton might have when addressing the nuances of the English language and literature in any great depth . ! The NFL records are no more sacrosanct that many of the now tarnished records within baseball (MLB) ! But then again one simply has to to look at the pompous oafs who now oversee baseball game to realize how inept that they have been while the players have simply flouted the rules of the sport. From my own perspective this record was bound to be surpassed either this season or next given the proliferation of the game and the preponderance of the quarterbacks in relying upon the use of their arm . The NFL has in essence become a pass happy and pass first with the running game now taking second fiddle and merely being used at the outset to stifle the opposition .

So the NBA season is off to an inauspicious start with the marquee matchup on the opening day having been the game between the reigning NBA champions the Dallas Mavericks in their rematch against the Miami Heat . With the Heat trio of Chris Bosh , LeBron James and Dwyane Wade looking to avenge last season’s unexpected series loss , this year will be one which will truly test this reconstructed Miami Heat team . There is no doubt in my mind that head coach Erik Spoelstra in conjunction with his mentor team President Pat Riley know that all eyes will be upon them as well as the entire organization . Operational losses by the Miami Heat prior to the acquisition of both Bosh and James led to the Riley and team owner Micky Arison engineering the deals that would bring both NBA All Stars to South Beach.

Now the Miami Heat arguably are the best team within the Eastern Conference but many argue that the Chicago Bulls and the veteran presence of the Boston Celtics could possibly be amongst the claimants who could also offer themselves up as viable candidates . Whilst Spoelstra has a further year of experience under his belt as the Heat’s head coach , I do believe that Tom Thibodeau and Doc Rivers are actually better coaches in many facets of the game beyond the capacity shown by Erik Spoelstra . LeBron James for his part was very much the primary reason why the Heat failed so miserably in the NBA Finals last season . But it would be remiss to suggest that the two time league MVP is solely to blame for his team’s woes but it was very clear that James does bear the brunt of the responsibility for the Miami Heat’s poor showing in that historic series . Dwyane Wade as well should now be taking a look at himself in the mirror along with teammate Chris Bosh as they failed to show the leadership one would have thought could from such seasoned veterans . Instead all of the proverbial excuses one would come to expect from coddled NBA superstars whom NBA Commissioner David Stern believe should be the face of the NBA and the league’s biggest selling point .

The league hierarchy and team owners have done themselves no favors this season with their rather inept handling of the NBA induced work stoppage but even more so the greed of all parties concerned in particular by the NBPA (union) gives even more credence as to the main reason why there is literally no common sense being shown by the NBA ! What might be even more absurd however is this rather naive belief that the league even with its new collective bargaining agreement there is this sense financial fiduciary responsibility being shown by the NBA . There is still a great deal of resentment amongst the owners themselves over this new deal which the commissioner himself has failed to acknowledge even knowing that five prominent owners led by Micky Arison (Miami Heat) and Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks voted against the ratification of this deal in total opposition of their peers .

While there now seems to be a great deal of delight in the fact that the Chris Paul trade has taken place with th former New Orleans Hornets’ player now happily ensconced with the Los Angeles Clippers , very little has been made of or mentioned of the fact that the Hornets are now fighting for their very survival as an NBA franchise , all this while the organization is now under league ownership , without the commissioner himself said to be actively pursuing a new owner of the team. Someone please explain to me the absolute apathy of the fans and that of the league hierarchy itself ___ never mind the idiocy now being shown by team GM Dell Demps and Jac Silver the de facto lead executive of the of the organization who is directly answerable to the NBA commissioner in all matters as it relates to the franchise ? The New Orleans Hornets have been hemorrhaging red ink amongst its bottom line for the last five years and has been one of the least favorable teams in terms of attendance over that period and that is spite of being the recipient of some $55 million from the league hierarchy over the last two years . What is even more staggering , is that in spite of all of these moves Dell Demps and David Stern are of the belief that the New Orleans Hornets as an organization and team can remain solvent and competitive . I for one would like to know what they are now basing those findings on rather than merely speculating that things are about to get better for this franchise !

As the NFL season now plays itself out with week seventeen’s schedule now awaiting the culmination of another arduous regular season it remains to be seen what dramas are left to unfold . Obviously there are a number of teams this season that have disappointed the NFL fans in general , while others have simply exceeded their own expectations and that of their very fans . The NBA itself with its own truncated season could well fail to live up to the perceived hype and expectations that the league hierarchy and union (NBPA) still believes that the fans yearn ____ but here again it will be about how these teams adapt to their environment and the rigors of the season . What thoughts if any do you have on the points raised within this piece ? Simply leave a comment as to your thoughts .

I Won’t Be Asking Any Questions Because I Don’t Need To Know The Answer !

I Won’t Be Asking Any Questions Because I Don’t Need To Know The Answer …… !

By tophatal ….

Well week 15 within the NFL essentially told us a great deal more than we already knew but in reality it was simply another week of some rather mediocre football played within the league . Tim Tebow finally proved to the fans out there that he is indeed human after-all and that he has not been imbued with miraculous powers . God may well love his flock but this much I know he obviously doesn’t like ugly ! Anyone who witnessed that the latter stages of the game between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots at Mile High / Sports Authority Field in Denver Colorado this past Sunday will be fully aware that Tebow did not have that great a game . But then again there were a number of quarterbacks during week 15 whose performances simply defied logic for one reason or another . Now while I understand all of the hoopla behind the upsurge of Tim Tebow devotees , now is simply the time to realize that while his exploits this season for the Broncos have been exemplary let’s not go overboard and think of the youngster as the best thing to happen to the organization since John Elway was leading the Denver Broncos to past glories .

Slide show for your perusal .

With Elway now having joined the front office of the Broncos’ organization it is felt that his working in conjunction with GM Brian Xanders head coach John Fox , owner Pat Bowlen and the coaching staffing then quite possibly the fortunes of the Denver Broncos could be resurrected to their former heights of success . Certainly this season the team has proven to be one of the more pleasant surprises of the year within the NFL . But I simply subscribe to the fact that the play within the AFC West amongst the teams there does leave a great deal to be desired . So much so that even in spite of the Denver Broncos’ loss (41-23) to the Patriots this past Sunday , they still manage to maintain a one game lead over the Oakland Raiders (7-7) within the division . And for some inexplicable reason Hu Jackson’s Raiders somehow managed to hand their game to the Detroit Lions having led in the waning moments of this particularly entertaining duel between two teams with playoff aspirations .

Now as an avid New England Patriots’ fan , seeing this team simply do something that the Broncos’ six previous adversaries had been unable to do , was like a delightful song to my ear ! And though I know that this Patriots’ secondary will most certainly have to play a hell of lot better given the team’s defensive liabilities shown over the course of this season . Whereas , the woes of the defense have been well chronicled this season , it has been the offense which doesn’t seem to have skipped a beat from last season in terms of of its proficiency . Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady are leading the way this season for the team . Gronkowski leads all TE’s (tight ends) within the NFL with 15 touchdown receptions and he trails only Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints in terms of overall receptions and yardage attained this year .

Brady for his part along with Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers now seem to be on pace for surpassing Dan Marino’s single season passing record (5084 yds) in terms of yardage in a season . With two games left to the season it is not unreasonable to think that the trio won’t surpass that feat which has now stood for an astonishing 27 years . The closest any quarterback has come to passing that statistic was in 2008 when Brees amassed 5069 yards merely missing that figure by the slightest of margins . Stats alone , is clearly not what necessarily defines these players as clearly it is about leading their teams to the ultimate accolade within the NFL , and that is to a Superbowl title . Each, have had that distinguished honor , with only Tom Brady amongst the trio having won multiple titles .

In the Green Bay Packers’ chase for perfection almost every superlative had been used described in describing this team . The one thing we hadn’t really seen , were the Packers being severely tested by an opponent in a thoroughly physical game . Granted , in their game ( week 13) against the New York Giants , Eli Manning and his teammates threw just about everything at Mike McCarthy’s players with the exception of the kitchen sink . The Packers came away with a narrow margin of victory 38-35 victory over the New York Giants and the questions arose as to whether or not their unbeaten season would remain intact . Sunday gave us the answers we all sought , as the lowly ranked Kansas City Chiefs led by their interim head coach Romeo Crennel simply upended the Green Bay Packers’ dreams of an unbeaten regular season . Arrowhead Stadium was the scene of perhaps the biggest upset of the NFL season as the Chiefs downed the Packers 19-14 . Now it someone had told me that the Kansas City Chiefs would be the team to ambush the Packers in a so called ” trap game ” , I would have been the first to acknowledge that this would had to have been a joke ! But there it was for all to see on national television and the thousands in attendance at Arrowhead Stadium the mighty Packers being humbled by the 6-8 Kansas City Chiefs . The Chiefs from an offensive standpoint are closer to the bottom rung of the NFL ladder but somehow they made the light work of the Packers whilst their defense seemed resolute and steadfast in not allowing Rodgers and his offense any quarter . And the rest as they say is history .

Now don’t get me wrong it’s not that I despise New York Jet’s coach Rex Ryan but anytime he’s simply at a loss for words and belittled in the NFL arena you’re liable to see me beaming with a smile from ear to ear ! Sunday , I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat as Ryan’s team had their asses handed to them on a silver platter . Somehow the New York Jets , which Ryan declares each season with his arrogant pomposity ” are the team to beat” within the AFC put on a display that was so banal and mediocre against the much over-hyped Philadelphia Eagles that it actually had me wondering what the fuss has always been about concerning the New York Jets ! I couldn’t give a sh_t if they have made to two consecutive appearances in the AFC Championship game in the last two season , as no one ever asks who came in second and that is now clearly becoming the case with the Jets ! What might be even more surprising concerning this game may well have been the margin of victory as Michael Vick and his teammates put a ” world of hurt “ on the Jets , on their way to a lopsided 45-19 victory over a rather befuddled Mew York Jets . I was hoping to see a “five spot ” (50 points) put up on Ryan’s team but somehow I can only surmise that Andy Reid and his coaching staff saw fit to take pity on an inept Jets’ defense ! The victory slightly raises the hopes for the Philadelphia Eagles in terms of entering the playoff picture but that would be predicated upon the teams ahead of them slipping up over the remainder of their schedule . And that premise I now believe is very much unlikely to happen !

If they actually do things big within the state of Texas then what does that say about the mediocrity shown by all three New York teams on Sunday afternoon ? The Jets lose and the Giants may well have self imploded by allowing the Washington Redskins to scuttle ( 23-10 loss) their season and any postseason ambitions that they might well have had . Suffice to say , that for all of the exemplary exploits of Eli Manning this season this Giants’ team simply isn’t worth shit when it really needs to get things done ! Not only that but the poor play of the New York Giants in the loss could very well now have cost Tom Coughlin his job at the end of the season should they fail to make the playoffs . It’s now do or die for this organization from top to bottom !

No one circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills ……. at this juncture does anyone now really care ? Here was a team that at the start of the season came out of the gates firing on all cylinders . So much so , that many felt that they could very well be challenging the Patriots and Jets for supremacy within the AFC East . Instead Chan Gailey’s players have simply resorted to what they have come to be known for best doing , and that is to simply cower in the corner like a child who is afraid of the dark . Boo !

Somehow the Buffalo Bills while hosting the Miami Dolphins at home managed to look lethargic and so out of sync that it might well have had their fans wondering which of the two teams were actually rooted firmly at the bottom of the AFC East . The bone of contention for this Bills’ team has been injuries and a defense that at times tends has lost its focus . Such a situation must lay squarely upon the shoulders of Chan Gailey and his coaching staff but at the same time I would also think that with a lack of any leadership coming from any of the veterans on this team this fall from grace wasn’t totally unexpected . If Gailey is shown the door at the end of the season by GM Buddy Nix then it is my feeling that the ownership group will make a serious run at trying to lure either Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden back amongst the NFL coaching ranks . Neither of the two former NFL coaches seem to be eager to make that return but I am sure given the right incentives to make that step back into coaching then anything is entirely possible .

Much has been made this season that the Houston Texans have finally broken through having now won the AFC South and will now be making their very first appearance in the playoffs . Granted , it has been a long time coming when one considers the draft picks and the praise heaped upon one of the league’s most recent entrants to the NFL as a franchise . There were the seasons of high expectations only for the fans to be let down over the years . But 2011 has seen an uptick in the resolve of the organization led by owner Robert “Bob” McNair , GM Rick Smith and the other senior executives that make up the ownership group .

I have always maintained that you can tell a great deal about the teams that have a credible or one might say legitimate chance in the postseason and all this comes down to their play in the closing weeks of the regular season . With momentum it simply give those aspiring teams confidence to make their presence felt amongst those other contenders . From my own perspective I do not believe that the Houston Texans are likely to have a successful run in the playoffs ! Postseason inexperience as a team will certainly count against them and need one say that Gary Kubiak and his coaching staff have never experienced that sort of atmosphere that the organization is now about to be encapsulated by .

The Texans have been a team that is predicated upon its offense and with the likes of Arian Foster , Ben Tate , Owen Daniels , Kevin Walter and Andre Johnson providing that threat this ought to be a team that is capable of vying with the best in the league . However , at times what you see from the Texans does tend to be misleading and nowhere was this more apparent than the the inconsistency shown in their rather lopsided home loss (28-13) to the the Cam Newton led Carolina Panthers .

Now having lost Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart to season ending injuries , Gary Kubiak has now entrusted T J Yates to guide the team for the rest of the regular season and their foray into the playoffs . A great deal is being asked of the former North Carolina Tar Heel who as drafted in the fifth round (152nd pick) of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans . If Yates can make a successful foray with the team during the postseason then one would deem that he would be richly rewarded by GM Buddy Nix . But that would be a “big if” considering what is at stake not only for the rookie quarterback but also for the Texans as an organization .

With a mere two games left to the regular season before the teams in the mix embark upon the postseason schedule it will be interesting to see which of the clubs step up their game and which of them will actually fall by the wayside . It is at this time of the year that the NFL becomes really interesting as it piques the interest of the most ardent of fans as well as those observing with a mere passing interest . Say nothing of which the fans will now be inundated with the rather sophomoric and idiotic rants of the on air NFL analysts as to their own prognostications . My own thoughts on the matter let them have their way because in the end we all know what we want and more often than not we will tend ignore those inane rants to begin with ! What do you say on the matter ? Simply leave a comment as you see fit and as usual thanks for the continued support !

In The Land of Milk And Honey ……. In The Sunshine State .. Well We Now Have Nothing !

By tophatal

As a resident here within the Sunshine State , well here in Florida we could always supposedly pride ourselves on having a vibrant sporting environment . At present that just doesn’t happen to be the case amongst the professional and collegiate ranks in the sports that essentially most of us have become enamored with . Now while Jeffrey Loria and the newly monikered Miami Marlins try to make hay while the sun shines , it is becoming pretty clear that the organization is now in for a world of trouble if it is proven that they acted in conjunction with the city of Miami to finagle a bond issue that was fraudulent . So much so , that it has garnered the interest of the SEC and Justice Dept , whilst the Securities and Exchange Commission conducts their investigation . It will be interesting to see what public statements if any will be forthcoming from the commissioner’s office , if not from Bud Selig himself , then from one of his subordinates , most notably from Joe Torre EVP Baseball Operations or Tim Brosnan EVP Business Operations or John McHale Jr , Executive Vice President, Administration & Chief Information Officer . Chances are that they will remain mute on this issue pending the outcome of the SEC’s investigation .

Picture and slide show details .

With the organization having been able to acquire high priced free agent Jose Reyes the Miami Marlins were intent in making a big splash this off-season . Their failure to land Albert Pujols showed the grandiose lengths that David Sansom and GM Michael Hill were prepared to go to in order to meet their needs for a big time high profiled player that would simply be a lure to the Latin community in South Florida at large . Now with nowhere to go they may well have to go with the next best option in terms of a productive first baseman . Prince Fielder fits the bill but I seriously doubt that team President Larry Beinfest will acquiesce to Scott Boras’ wish to see his client compensated along the lines of the Pujols’ ten year $254 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels . It also remains to be seen as to whether not Fielder can even command a sum that would place him amongst the top tier of players at the position or as is Boras’ wish to have client be amongst the highest salaried players in the game . One thing I do know is that even with the advent of a new ballpark coming on line next season and the supposed commercial sponsorship there is said to be in place , something extremely dubious is going on concerning the Miami Marlins , that even MLB Commissioner Bud Selig does not care to address publicly , much less privately . But should we at all expect anything different ?

The Marlins’ instate rivals , the Tampa Bay Rays while having an extraordinary closure to their regular season and foray into the postseason . Once again it’s back to business as usual as the organization looks to skimp and save in order to make sure that they know where their next ” red cent ” is coming from by way of making payroll . That being said what GM Andrew Friedman has managed to do in conjunction with Joe Maddon and the coaching staff can be best described as phenomenal . Thread bare in terms of financial resources they were able to assemble a team of young players eager to prove their worth alongside seasoned veterans .

Well this off-season for the Tampa Bay Rays has proven to be no different than last season and where again they now have to resort to jettisoning players thought to be superfluous to their needs . At this juncture I am not so sure how long their hardcore fans will be able to tolerate them operating under such conditions merely to survive , never mind the problems of the attendance at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, Florida over the past few seasons . Now even with opposing teams and their players decrying the fact that they find the Rays’ home venue to be archaic there has been little assistance provided by Bud Selig , much less from anyone else within the league hierarchy in helping the ownership group access and assess all possibilities in facilitating a proposed new venue . But somehow the commissioner was able to interject himself in assisting both the New York Mets and New York Yankees in the building of their two venues ( Citi Field & Yankee Stadium ) at a combined cost of some $2.355 billion , all this while New York mayor Michael Bloomberg knows that both venues will be able to host repeatedly All Star Games in the coming years . And there are fans out there with the actual belief that Bud Selig represents the best interests of the owners ? Only those who wield the financial power and who happen to have the ear of the commissioner are able to do that ! sure ! The minnows ( small market owners ) of the world are either left with scraps or simply must fend for themselves . For Tampa Bay Rays’ owner Stuart Sternberg he might just be slowly awakening to the fact that Bud Selig and the league hierarchy simply doesn’t give a shit about his team , much less Sternberg and his partners .

How else can I put this more succinctly ? No one at all should be surprised that either Jack Del Rio or Tony Sparano were fired by their respective organizations . Del Rio , over the past five years had achieved little of consequence with the Jacksonville Jaguars and his managerial record (68-71/.489) with the team simply bore this out . Not to be outdone the equally futile Sparano (29-32/.475) was literally all blustery hot air , as he tried to get a Miami Dolphins’ team to play with some resolve this season . If anything poor play , lack of any real leadership from anyone on the roster and the idiotic belief that then starting season quarterback Chad Henne was simply good enough to lead this team anywhere was beyond belief . Chad Henne on his best day couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn were he given the assistance of the latest in guided missile technology from the US Defense Department ! Henne’s backup Matt Moore has fared little better than the former starter as the team has struggled to remain even competitive in large part . That being said the woes of this team , have far more to do with the personnel issues and the mere fact that GM Jeff Ireland , the team’s scouting department , Sparano and the coaching staff have no real eye when it comes to assessing talent .

Now the prevailing thought may well be that team owner Shahid Khan (Jaguars) and Stephen Ross of the Miami Dolphins will seek out high profiled coaches now seated on the sidelines , as Jon Gruden , Bill Cowher , Brian Billick , perhaps peruse the current crop assistant NFL head coaches to assess the talents of Rob Ryan , Winton Moss , Joe Philbin or peruse the collegiate ranks and perhaps make a play for the likes of LSU’s .. Les Miles , Mike Gundy ( Oklahoma St ) , Bret Bielema (Wisconsin Badgers ) and as usual , the perennial talk as to whether or not Bob Stoops is ready to step up and try his hand amongst the professional ranks .

If we thought that the woes of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins were bad . Then I can only surmise that anyone assessing the mess as it relates to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-9) , must be thinking that how can a team that surprised so many last season with a 10-6 record , narrowly failing to make playoffs but end up this season being a complete and utter abomination ? For their part GM Mark Dominik and head coach Raheem Morris seem to be completely lost for words in terms of the team’s lack of progress this season .

Now while I understand that Morris was thrust into the lion’s den without much experience I can’t help but wonder what the mindset of the Glazer family must now be as the coaching staff and the team heads aimlessly nowhere ! And the cause of this team certainly hasn’t been helped when such seasoned veteran as Ronde Barber and Kellen Winslow Jr are nowhere to be seen , much less heard from vocally encouraging the younger players on the roster . Instead are all we now hear are the idiotic cries that both Dominik and Morris ought to be fired , but then again the local beat writers and on air personalities have shown about as much sense as Herman Cain has shown during his run as the GOP nominee for the 2012 Presidential race ! ” We were friends for fourteen en years and I simply gave this woman money in her time of need without ever telling my wife ” . At the same the idiot prognosticators within the Tampa locale believed the Buccaneers to be far better than they actually are . Never mind the fact that as losers of seven straight games this team has been one of the worse performing franchises over that stretch .

Now Josh Freeman might not be Tim Tebow but god knows perhaps the Bucs’ quarterback ought to be now getting down on one knee and seeking divine guidance from up above . That might well be the only damn thing that might be able to save this team from their miserable and mediocre season at this juncture . The once unflappable quarterback is now having one his worse runs as an NFL professional and it hasn’t helped that he is now being outshone by the likes of Cam Newton , Matt Ryan and Drew Brees within the NFC South this season .

On Saturday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have the dubious distinction in hosting another NFC combative in the Dallas Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , Florida . I can only hope that Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett will continue to show his ineptitude as NFL coach which the vast majority of us have witnessed for ourselves concerning the last two debacles as it relates to America’s Team (in name only) . Jason at which point will you again choose to ” ice ” your kicker or simply call a dumb ass play ? Do let us know . It is now or never for Raheem Morris and this Bucs’ team in terms of resurrecting their season in part and bringing about a sense of respectability to it all . If not the calls for his firing no matter how unlikely that is to happen may well prove to be even more vociferous than ever before . Team owner Malcolm Glazer having turned over the reins to his son Brian Glazer in terms of the day to day running of the organization has chosen the path to simply spend less money on team personnel while seeing if they can add more shine to the luster of the other sporting jewel in their crown English Premier League ( EPL) soccer team Manchester United . It would appear that for the Glazer’s , it will be back to business as usual and the pretense of their old ways . Never let it be said that this organization isn’t cheap ! Hell yeah , these bastards have always been cheap and that’s even with the likes of local sports’ talk radio station 620 WDAE continuing to kiss their proverbial ass without ever once seeking to be objective !

I would like to say something nice about both of the NHL franchises within the state but what point is there to it all ? Suffice to say that the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning are like pieces of fecal matter on the ass of an elephant ! About the only thing that seems to be interested in the elephant and the mess around its rear end are a cluster of flies hovering to see what there might be edible to eat . ‘nough said on the matter I believe !

Ignoring the gory details and the insidious in fighting now said to be taking place within the NBA is there anyone at all surprised by the mess that the league and league hierarchy now finds itself in ? So much so that commissioner David Stern is now overriding the efforts of Jac Silver (league appointed executive to over see the team’s operations) and GM Dell Demps in trying to negotiate a deal to trade the New Orleans’ Hornets’ best player Chris Paul . Needless to say this drama will play itself with all of the comedic value we would tend to see when watching a silent movie from the 1920’s . Now don’t get me wrong but having bought this team from George Shinn , the commissioner and the hierarchy he oversees have shown about as much resolve in seeking out a new owner as Paris Hilton would be interested in seeking to obtain a medical degree . But therein lies the asinine belief that the new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) agreed to by the NBA and ratified by the NBPA (union) meant something and has actually brought about stability within the league . Nothing could be further from the truth . The New Orleans Hornets may well have gotten their way now with the trade of Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers but if this team fails to be competitive this season it begs the question what then happens to the organization from the viewpoint of David Stern ? Especially in light of the fact that the league has yet to divulge any information as to whether or not there appears to be a potential bidder on the horizon for the New Orleans Hornets’ franchise .

And whilst that laughable affair goes on , central Florida’s lone NBA franchise the Orlando Magic now is beginning to feel the reverberations of the rumor mill steadily growing as to the immediate future of Dwight Howard . To my mind Howard , much like Herman Cain should keep his damn mouth shut until he actually has something relevant to say , rather than the constant denials that he didn’t demand a trade after having met with team GM Otis Smith and Magic CEO Alec Martins .

Team general manager Otis Smith having sought to pursue a trade that would be beneficial to the organization now appears to have pulled the plug on such a transaction . . But for now , it would appear that should a potential suitor such as the Los Angeles Lakers , Dallas Mavericks or New Jersey Nets come a calling , then there is no doubt in my mind that Smith would not hesitate to facilitate such a deal !

With the now truncated NBA schedule of a mere 66 regular season games down from the customary 82 game schedule . It will be interesting to see which teams will deemed to be favored within the Eastern and Western Conferences . Many will still view the Miami Heat as the presumptive favorites within the East , given the fact that they have the core of their roster in tact from last season . With the regular season commencing with a slate of 5 games kicking off on Christmas Day , highlighted by a repeat of last season’s NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks starting off the defense of their NBA title against the Miami Heat , with the Chicago Bulls taking on the Los Angeles Lakers , Boston Celtics facing off against the New York Knicks , Los Angeles Clippers vs …. Golden State Warriors and finally the Oklahoma City Thunder ….. battling the Orlando Magic .

The Miami Heat for their part led by their trio of superstars LeBron James , Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade will be looking to avenge last year’s postseason foray . Coach Erik Spoelstra , his coaching staff , team GM & President Pat Riley and the front office have been quick to point out that last season’s missteps were part and parcel of the over expectation of the NBA analysts and fans exalting and trumpeting the fact that the Heat were the team to beat . Much of that if anything may well have come down to the fact that James had made that often now outrageous statement that he could ” see the team reeling of multiple championships in succession “ . Now as we all know that claim bit the dust almost as fast as the longevity of Kim Kardashian’s marriage to Kris Humphries and then some !

Come again LeBron ? Not one , not two , not three but how many championships ? Hell , you’ve yet to win one so keep it quiet and let the team speak for itself ! Oh I forgot this season you don’t want to be seen as a villain but merely someone who yearns to win a championship . Well , how about you stop bitching and whining because there’s no one said to be kissing your ass like they did in Cleveland before your abrupt departure from the city and the state of Ohio . If all else fails , well there’s always Stephen A Smith waiting in the wings to suck on a certain part of your anatomy !

Riley and his protege` Erik Spoelstra have gone about fixing what they felt was wrong in terms of the team’s personality and character . With the addition of Shane Battier , Eddie Curry , Derrik Byars and Mickell Gladness to an already seasoned roster the Miami Heat look to eschew the problems that they had from last season in terms of their personnel make up . That in of-itself might not be enough for the team because in essence their rivals within the conference such as the Chicago Bulls , New York Knicks and the always wily Boston Celtics are not going to let this Heat think that they will have the Eastern Conference all to themselves . And as star laden as the conference just happens to be , I think it is pretty clear that as long as the “Big Three” are healthy , then all avenues to the Eastern Conference Finals may well run through the Miami Heat . The question is , which guise will this unit take on once their schedule begins and will they be able to maintain that composure throughout the course of season and into their NBA postseason foray ?

Now while I have always been a fervent admirer of the NBA in terms of a number of teams , I have to admit that while the lockout was in place , it were as if its very handling by the league hierarchy and union were akin to seeing two petulant children fighting over a toy ! As to this asinine talk of teams saving money due to certain clauses , initiated as part of the new collective bargaining agreement . Only a myopic fool would be of the belief that the league now has its financial house in order , given the fact that the vast majority of the franchises within the NBA struggle to break even each season . Never mind the fact that over the past two seasons the the commissioner has initiated his own form of TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) by bailing out 20 NBA franchises to the tune of some $650 million , which he states .. ” this should not be seen as a bailout but merely a way of keeping these franchises financially solvent ” . Perhaps, if David Stern would get it into his thick head for once, that the real issues at hand are not simply about revenue sharing but having an equitable situation as it relates to the team salary structure by way of a mandatory hard and fast ” salary cap” . Instead of the archaic and ridiculous notion of a luxury tax imposed upon the ” so called big market teams “ which hasn’t worked or changed the competitive landscape of the NBA at all ! . But then again who here is of the belief Stern is still of sound mind or judgment ? Raise your hands please ?

The new ballpark built at a cost of some $565 million has brought about an investigation now being conducted by the SEC (Securities & Exchange Commission) that could implicate members of the Miami City commission concerning how they initiated the funding of the facility by way of a bond issue that in large part places the residents of the city on the hook should there be a default by the municipality . Records have been subpoenaed by the SEC from municipality’s offices but thus far it is not clear if anyone from within the front office of Miami Marlins or the MLB hierarchy are implicated in any alleged wrongdoing . Carpe` Diem … Seize The Day

By tophatal ….

Well it would appear that MLB (baseball) has another image problem to deal in light of the fact that NL MVP Ryan Braun has tested positive for a banned substance prohibited by the league hierarchy . In light in what has been one of the most exciting and exhilirating seasons in recent baseball history . The fact that a reigning MVP is now embroiled in such a controversy that further tarnishes the image of the game as well Braun , himself , further emphasizes what I have felt along ! Major League Baseball and its hierarchy under MLB Commissioner Bud Selig just happens to far too clueless for their own good and are in complete denial ! For his part the denial of Braun while vociferous points to the fact the players and their union (MLBPA) clearly are not averse to still seeing their members flout the rules of the game .

===================================================================================

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

==================================================================================================

Now while I don’t believe that the BBWAA will rescind the awarding OF Braun the accolade I do believe that in future they will clearly have to rethink the premise under which they set their criteria . The voting itself within the NL had Ryan Braun defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Matt Kemp not necessarily by the slimmest of margins but it may well now set about a precedence about what was known concerning this issue, as baseball’s hierarchy were fully cognizant of this the player’s positive result some months ago , but only now just making it public after his having been awarded the accolade . Pardon me for saying this , but in what universe are the ” so called custodians of the game “ living in ? More to the point where is the common sense prevailing within the game itself ? Now in light of this all we now know that the league has now chosen reinstate twice guilty substance abuser Manny Ramirez , therefore affording him the right to return to the game , which he himself has tarnished as well given fans a number of exciting as well as thought provoking moments to think about over the course of his career . Suffice to say it’s back to business as usual within the game of baseball where in essence , not a god damn thing has changed ! The league and the team owners at this juncture are simply devoid of all intelligence in spite of the continued claims of Bud Selig that the game now has the most stringent of testing policies in all of professional sports . What Selig and the managers and the union have clearly chosen no to do is to educate the players on what is meant to be legitimate in terms of the substances that they deem allowable within the game . Not once have I heard a succinct answer being given as to the legitimate substances allowable for use by the players . Is there a fan out there who doesn’t at all find this surprising ?

As to the possible penalties that can be levied against Ryan Braun beyond the mandatory 50 game suspension for a first violation . I think it highly unlikely that the BBWAA (Baseball Writers’ Assoc of America) will take away his award and then place it in the hands of Matt Kemp as their de-facto recipient . What else could be anymore embarrassing than the present situation that they now find themselves in ? Well it’s not as if that alleged esteemed body has ever truly been known to show much common sense to begin with anyway ! So let’s essentially look upon this mess as simply another reason why the game of baseball hasn’t got its head on straight ! Simply look down the list of former Cy Young Award winners and league MVP’s over the last few years (decade plus) that have been in some way been embroiled in the tawdry fiasco now commonly known as the ” steroid era ” ? And for the idiots out there who feel that steroids do no harm even when abused ……. simply see how a patient suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF) or renal failure has to endure pain and then come back and respond .

Well here we go again, the Oakland Raiders simply continue to find numerous ways to repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot. Not content with their embarrassing loss (34-14) to the Miami Dolphins last week where the team was subjected to one of their most lopsided defeats in recent team history . Not totally content with that loss it would appear in being the guests of the NFL’s best team the Green Bay Packers (13-0) .The Raiders under head coach Hue Jackson simply felt it necessary to try and outdo the ineptitude shown in their humiliating loss to the Miami Dolphins . And boy they chose not to disappoint their fans or the Packers’ fans in attendance at Lambeau Field , Green Bay , Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.

Now for all of those Raiders’ fans out there , who were convinced that Carson Palmer would somehow be the cure to what ails this team with the advent of losing Jason Campbell for the season . I can’t help but wonder what those fans might now be currently thinking , not only of the performance of Palmer in this game but also the completely inept performance by the team’s secondary over the past two weeks .

The AFC West is now up for grabs and with the Raiders abject futility in their 46-16 loss to further emphasizes how far the Oakland Raiders have fallen over the past two weeks . It begs the question does this team much less the coaching staff or anyone within this organization really possess the heart “ to face adversity , look it squarely in the face and then somehow find a way to overcome that obstacle ? Or as I am more inclined to believe that the vast majority of Raiders’ fans are simply apathetic , who will continue to make excuses for the team’s plight while simply living in the past and regaling us with anecdotes as to the team’s history .

“Carpe` Diem and clearly that is what the Denver Broncos (8-5) and Tim Tebow are now clearly doing . Winners of six straight games the Broncos are slowly making believers out of the doubters whilst on air television analysts such as Phil Simms and Merril Hoge are slowly looking for ways to clearly extricate themselves from the denouncements made of the young quarterback . Tebow for his part and the team are merely trundling along and making a mockery of those who had written them off . Never mind the fact that as they now sit atop of the AFC West and the team now seems to be well on their way to securing their first divisional title in 6 years . And while the young quarterback’s stats are nowhere admirable to the statistician’s eyes one simply cannot deny that his grit, determination and the fact that he possesses the leadership abilities that many of his more experiences peers are simply unable to show . This one’s for you Tony Romo and Carson Palmer ! Overrated !

For John Fox , John Elway and GM Brian Xanders while everyone is on-board the ” Tebow Express” let ’em ride that locomotive for as long and as far it can take them . Inexplicably I am now beginning to wonder how Lovie Smith and rag tag bunch of ingrates are now feeling ! If Smith and GM Jerry Angelo are still serious about bringing in either Brett Favre or Donovan McNabb then god help this organization and their immediate future ! After their rather inept performance in that overtime loss (13-10) to the Denver Broncos I am not so sure what to make of this Bears’ team and their aspirations as it regards the postseason .

In the aftermath of the belated attempt by the New Orleans Hornets to trade Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers it should come as no surprise that several Hornets’ players are simply wanting to desert what now appears to be a sinking ship . The team now owned jointly by the NBA league hierarchy and the team owners are simply left with a franchise that is need of new ownership after the tenure and uneventful years of ownership under George Shinn . Coach Monty Williams , his coaching staff and GM Dell Demps because of the overall uncertainty now surrounding the franchise are caught between a rock and a hard place . And clearly without real stewardship forthcoming in terms of a lack of a real authoritative figure by way of an owner , this organization to my mind might now as well be folded up and cease their operations as an NBA franchise !

It is not as if either David Stern or Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver are said to be actively seeking out any potential suitors for the team . If that were the case , then I am sure that we would not have seen this active flurry surrounding the New Orleans Hornets ! No potential purchaser looking to buy this team would willingly acquiesce to the trade of the team’s best player and the de-facto face of the franchise . Now I heave read and heard it mentioned that the tentative deal that would have sent Paul to the Lakers with Pau Gasol joining the Hornets and Lamar Odom heading to the Houston Rockets as part of a three way deal would have effectively saved the Lakers several million dollars and exempt the organization from the league’s luxury tax . But to my mind that is but a small price to pay considering the irrevocable damage that would be done to the Hornets as a NBA franchise altogether ! As it is , the team struggles to makes its presence felt from an economic standpoint much less the fact that attendances for the team’s home games at the New Orleans Arena are seemingly minuscule when compared to many of its contemporaries within the NBA . Nowhere have I seen much less heard anyone simply bring this to the forefront of any discussion but as usual that merely all comes down to what many would like to see rather than simply facing the reality that the NBA is essentially still in a financial quagmire of its own damn making ! .

Now with all of the hype supposedly surrounding the compelling belief that this NBA season ought to be a special one , nothing in reality could be further from the truth . The NBPA (union) may not entirely got its way but I can assure you of one thing , this so called new found accord between the league and union will be short-lived . We are already beginning to see things to begin to fray at the edges and this latest incident clearly shows us all that the NBA and the union are clearly out of touch with reality . Never-mind the fact that owners such as Dan Gilbert , Joe Lacob , Michael Jordan and Rich De Vos will be hard pressed to see their respective organizations actually turn an operating profit . Fans are now talking about contracting small market teams but that would essentially solve nothing at all . It is clear that the front office executives are in dire need to some real economic lessons , rather than continuing with rather their rather asinine and idiotic spending on talent that in large is simply marginal at its very worse and grossly overvalued at the upper echelons of the game .

What does it say about an organization that simply dupes the municipality where it is domiciled into spending in excess of $ 575 million to build it an all purpose state of the art venue in downtown Orlando to house the Orlando Magic ? I have to admit that team owner Rich De Vos and his son in law Bob VanderWeide ” pulled the wool over the eyes” of Mayor Buddy Dyer and the elected officials on the city commission ! But what might be even more disturbing other than the fact of Vander Weide choosing to step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer, is the very fact that the Magic have now acquiesced to Dwight Howard’s demands to be traded . Unless I am mistake another celebrated former Orlando Magic center by the name of Shaquille O’Neal took the same route and would go on to see his career flourish within the NBA . Chalk this idiocy up to the machination of GM Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy who have over the years rather than complemented Howard with the talent he’s rightfully deserving of , instead they have given him ill fitting pieces that simply couldn’t cut the mustard much less anything else for that matter .

Now it should not come as a surprise that there will be a plethora of teams that will no doubt be interested in the NBA’s > best center and a player whose defensive prowess is unparalleled within the league . Now undoubtedly with the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers , New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks likely to be keen suitors for Howard’s talents , it will be very interesting to see quite possibly see what Otis Smith and Stan Van Gundy can obtain from any such trade that would be deemed to be reciprocal in value.

In the past 24 hours Dwight Howard has tried to alleviate his stance of wanting a trade and that is even with the Orlando Magic having acquired his close friend Glen Davis from the Boston Celtics . As to whether or not that will be enough to induce the front office of the Magic to still seek a trade of their celebrated three time NBA Defensive Player of the Year , well that now remains to be seen .

To my mind if Otis Smith , Stan Van Gundy and newly appointed team CEO & President Alec Martins are intent on retaining Dwight Howard then they will have to show the player that their passion in keeping him is genuine. Clearly jettisoning Gilbert Arenas was a step in the right direction with the player having added little to the team by way of his productivity last season . But it would be remiss to think that Arenas alone wasn’t a part of the lack of progress by the players on this roster . Hedo Turkoglu a seasoned journeyman simply showed that age has caught up with him and that he’s being vastly overpaid , having produced little of consequence to the Orlando Magic . But such has been the capricious nature of the personnel moves made by Otis Smith in conjunction with Stan Van Gundy that it ought to have any discerning Orlando Magic fans questioning the mindset of the duo !

Should such a trade ever take place then in all probability we will once again see the decline of this NBA franchise not only terms of its competitiveness but also in terms of its overall financial value . Now one of the most inane things I’ve read recently is a call for teams to be contracted within the NBA ! . Nowhere have I read , is how anyone would go about doing this and which teams would cease operating , never mind how would the league hierarchy go about compensating those team owners never mind the legal ramifications for those teams and the areas where they are domiciled . Less we forget many of these teams have contractual obligations with regard to the leasehold on their venues . So someone , please explain to where they see the NBA paying out tens of millions of dollars to team franchisees and would then by all accounts have to pay ” millions “ …. more in compensation to numerous municipalities across the country ? Come on , someone out there with some semblance of intelligence explain that or would they then rather see the NBA being steeped in litigation within US Federal Court for the next five or six months ? Clearly no thought was placed behind such a premise and merely only wishful thinking by such individuals !

Ain’t Nothin’ New Merely The Same Ol’ Bulls#it !

By tophatal …….

Well over the past 24 to 36 hours the sports’ world has been awash with moves within the MLB (baseball) …. and the NBA . Thankfully , calmer heads prevailed within the league hierarchy of the NBA but that’s not to say the same stupidity we have come to see exhibited by David Stern and the executives there won’t be repeated over the course of this truncated season ! With NBA team training camps now up and running , the talk is of what players will be on the move prior to the season’s start on Christmas Day .

From my own perspective , not much was really achieved by either side as the NBA league hierarchy , team owners have little to be completely satisfied about . Granted , David Stern will point to the fact he got the NBPA (union ) to agree to in season testing for steroids as part the new collective bargaining agreement but in reality beyond that there was little done to achieve the balance sought by both sides in terms of BRI ( basketball related income revenues [$4.5 billion annually] ) equality and a firm financial standpoint , from which they can move forward .

What was meant to be a blockbuster move that would have seen the Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol move to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Hornets’ point guard Chris Paul with Lamar Odom then heading to the Houston Rockets , when the move was not granted any ratification and denied by the league . Widely reported as a move engineered by Lakers’ GM Mitch Kupchak with the blessing of the now hospitalized ( suffering from blood clots to both legs) owner Dr Jerry Buss . The deal itself had a great of unsatisfactory elements to it and when one bears in mind that the Hornets’ franchise is in effect owned by the league hierarchy , in essence compromising of the owners and the hierarchy’s executive committee . Former franchise owner George Shinn unable to find an owner even in light of the low ball bid made by then minority stake owner Gary Chouest . The league bought the franchise and as its current owner they are actively seeking a buyer for the NBA team with a view to keeping the organization within the city of New Orleans .

If anything indicates why the NBA much like its baseball counterpart continues to remain a farce , then the notion that this trade could have gone ahead without passing any sense of credibility in terms of simply meeting the most basic of the league mandated requirements simply indicates how out of sync the owners , general managers and the league hierarchy itself tends to be and the fact that they feel they are not compelled to explain themselves. For once , however , Stern actually took note but that is not to say that this trade won’t take place sooner , rather than later . Chris Paul most definitely wants out from the Hornets , albeit that he has not been publicly vocal on wanting to leave the franchise that drafted him fourth overall in the 2005 NBA Draft . In his six seasons within league the player has proven to be one of the premiere point guards within the game . However, it was becoming abundantly clear that not only was Chris Paul unhappy with the direction of the organization but the mere fact that the ownership situation remained unresolved and there appeared to be no outward resolve from GM Dell Demps as to bolstering the roster of the team .

For individuals such as former player , NBA front office executive and TNT Tv analyst Steve Kerr who has been openly critical of David Stern “nixing” this deal , he ought to remember that the potential trade simply did nothing for the Hornets from a competitive standpoint . All it was merely doing , was to sink that organization lower into the depths of mediocrity . And from a financial standpoint , the support of the locale fans it would have probably brought about a further downturn in attendance for New Orleans Hornet . One ought to remember it remains one of the lowest supported NBA franchises in attendance and it has been that way for a considerable time . So clearly from Kerr’s own myopic view and intent all he desired in seeing was a another ” so called super team ” being assembled , perhaps to mount a serious challenge to the Miami Heat’s “Big Three” of Chris Bosh , Dwyane Wade and LeBron James . It is at times like this that I would prefer for the likes of Kerr preferably not to be seen or heard from in terms certain points of view . Clearly from an executicve standpoint his career was something of a bust as a general manager with the Phoenix Suns , whilst his playing career most notably stood out from his association with that very successful Chicago Bulls’ organization of the nineties led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen . Beyond that there’s not much that one could really say about Kerr and his credibility !

Amongst the lower tiered teams within the NBA in terms of salary for its players it is extremely easy to understand why one the league’s small market teams in the New Orleans Hornets would be under a great deal of financial strain. And even with the expectation of the Hornets’ own free agents perhaps looking to re-sign with the club or seek a more lucrative move elsewhere . One can clearly understand the dilemma that’s now faced by Demps , the coaching staff led by Monty Williams and lead assistant Randy Ayers .

This upcoming season it will be extremely hard to see how this Hornets’ team will be able to contend not only with the contenders within its division ( Southwest Division) but also the Western Conference and the league as a whole .

For me nothing says naivete’ on the part of the Los Angeles Lakers in terms of this prospective move than it merely by appearance alone seems to Mitch Kupchak and coach Mike Brown wanting their own roster of All Stars ! If anything I can understand the urgency behind wanting a point guard on this roster given the fact that Derek Fisher is showing his age and Steve Blake for all of his experience clearly failed to give the contributions sought by Brown’s predecessor Phil Jackson last season in the advent of the team’s postseason malaise . Undermining that all , may well have been the fact that the team’s center Andrew Bynum’s own contributions over the course of last season were so varied and inconsistent .

Seeing the Los Angeles Lakers being manhandled , outplayed and being utterly listless in their loss to the eventual champions the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semi-finals gave us a great indication as to how far the team had apparently regressed , having been swept 4-0 in a crushing series’ loss .

With Mike Brown being in his first year as the team’s new coach , he knows that he has some gigantic shoes to fill , given his successor’s unprecedented success with the organization . And while no one can deny Kobe Bryant’s zeal to win the player knows that as leader of this present Lakers’ on-court regime he has to be surrounded by players complementary to his skill-set and not merely by a band of observers .That was clearly the case over the course of last season with the exception of Pau Gasol , who if anything I firmly believe should still be a part of this team ! But such are the vagaries placed upon the coaches and general managers to succeed that they and an organization are at times quite prepared to sell “their souls to the Devil ” all in the wish to chase after success .

The Lakers open up their regular season schedule with a Christmas Day game against Eastern Conference opponents the Chicago Bulls led by last season’s league MVP Derrick Rose .

I am actually reluctant to welcome back the NBA given the fact that I have found the antics of the league and union to be bordering on the infantile like behavior of kindergarten kids ! There is no way in hell after their machinations that I can honestly say that the likes of LeBron James , Dwyane Wade , Carmelo Anthony and Amar`e Stoudemire can continue contend that their labor dispute is like that of any other social labor issue we have seen in the workplace over the last two decades . I guess when their median income is actually over ten times the national average (approx $45,000 per capita) one has to what the hell they were actually complaining about to begin with ? Multi millionaire athletes continue to bitch and whine as to their income while the fans in essence have to scrape for every penny earned to merely attend a game , never mind the fact that if you’re watching from the confinement of the luxury of your own home you are still paying for the privilege of watch the NBA brand on court . Ah well , one just has to survive in the best way possible !

Well the NFL regular season is now down to its final three scheduled weekend of games before the postseason begins with a great deal of relish by the fans on the cusp of seeing their teams making their foray into the season ending event of the playoffs . Questions being raised ………. will the Green Bay Packers (12-0) end their regular season unbeaten joining the likes of the 1972 73 ….. Miami Dolphins and the 2007 New England Patriots ? And can or will the Indianapolis Colts (0-12 ) remain winless thereby guaranteeing their chance of taking Andrew Luck #1 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft ? God knows , these questions are currently being asked but have yet to be answered .! And I currently know they will remain the water cooler topic amongst the vast majority of NFL fans until there is an outright answer !

Week 14 gives us a litany of games that could very well determine the fate of a number teams and their divisional aspirations . Perhaps no one game is more representative of this fact than the NFC East match-up between the Dallas Cowboys (7-5) taking on the New York Giants (6-6) at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington , Texas , otherwise known as ” the palatial edifice “ that Jerry Jones built . I can guarantee you this , there have been far more better staged events at the stadium than any home game played there this season by the Cowboys and that without a doubt is my sincerest belief ! Furthermore , Jason Garrett has proven to me that he is an NFL head coach in name only ! ” Ice” your kicker Jason , unless that has now become the primary reason why you might have no faith in Tony Romo during the crunch time ? I am just asking that’s all !

All The Kings’ Horses And All The Kings’ Men Couldn’t Put Humpty Dumpty Together Again

All The Kings’ Horses And All The Kings’ Men Couldn’t Put Humpty Dumpty Together Again …

By tophatal ……

Well with baseball’s Winter Meetings now in session in Dallas, Texas , with the league hierarchy , general managers owners , agents , union representatives and a number of players all convening to get the lay of the ground . it has to be said that in light of a highly exhilarating season and postseason these meetings are seeing and taking an interesting turn of events . Nowhere is now more apparent than with the growing speculation as to where perhaps the most prized free agent of the offseason will make his home .

Albert Pujols coming off another successful season with the St Louis Cardinals and their triumph in the World Series is now an unrestricted free agent . And Pujols’ agent , Dan Lozano now must be the envy of his peers as he looks to guide his client in taking the best deal available , while at the same looking to further impact the player’s success over the course of his future . Courting the player at present are the St Louis Cardinals , Los Angeles Angels , Chicago Cubs and surprisingly enough the Florida Marlins . Cardinals’ GM John Mozelliak may well have had the inside track earlier but given the fact that the player and organization could not come to an agreement during the season on a contract extension that would be mutually beneficial for both parties , it has now opened up the doors for the Cubs and Marlins to intervene, to espouse the virtues of joining their respective organizations .

The continued speculation about Albert Pujols’ immediate future and that of his fellow first baseman compatriot Prince Fielder further makes this offseason something of an interesting one . Money appears to be the catalyst that will see how things pan out for the duo and to what extent and length teams are prepared to sign either of the duo. The two are amongst the very best at the position within the game and I am sure that they would like to be compensated in such a manner ! At the top of the pile amongst first baseman in terms of an annual salary happens to be the New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira who earned $22,500,000 as part of that extraordinary contract negotiated by his then agent Scott Boras with team GM Brian Cashman . Suffice to say , that Scott Boras remains the “1,000lb gorilla in the room” as he has simply become the bane of the general managers around the game of baseball . From my own personal standpoint it isn’t necessarily the agent himself , but the total gullibility of the GM’s and owners , whom Boras tends to have eating out of his hands like a kitten who has been given a fresh bowl of milk to drink from . And if that wasn’t bad enough in the eyes of Bud Selig , the agent can seem to do know wrong .

Marlins seek resolution in Pujols pursuit

If spurned, Miami could set sights on Fielder to upgrade offense

By Joe Frisaro of MLB.com

DALLAS — Where Albert Pujols will wind up has dominated the discussion the first two days of the Winter Meetings, and it promises to be the topic of the day again on Wednesday.

Negotiations between Pujols’ agent, Dan Lozano, and the Marlins lasted into the night on Tuesday without any definitive answers.

The Cardinals, antsy not to lose one of the greatest players of any era, reportedly upped their ante to about $220 million over 10 years.

The Marlins have a 10-year offer on the table, said to be more than $200 million, and perhaps in the $220 million range. And then late on Tuesday came word that a “mystery third team” joined the equation. Speculation is the Angels, or possibly the Cubs, are making an end-around pass at Pujols.

nternally, the Marlins have had a quiet confidence that they will land the services of Pujols before the Winter Meetings conclude on Thursday. After all, the team has had numerous talks with Lozano, and a few weeks back, Pujols visited Miami and toured the flashy new ballpark in the Little Havana section of town.

The ball, however, is in the court of the veteran first baseman.

As Pujols weighs his options, the Marlins are seeking a resolution one way or the other. Team owner Jeffrey Loria clearly wants to acquire Pujols, but the Marlins want answers so they can decide their next move in rebuilding the franchise.

If Pujols decides to remain in St. Louis, or join a mystery third team, the Marlins want to still have time to discuss fallback options. One of them would be Prince Fielder.

The Marlins clearly want a more powerful offense, and they will swing for the fences even if their lineup doesn’t include Pujols.

The Florida Marlins soon to become the Miami Marlins this upcoming season have themselves been busy in the free agency market . Having signed former New York Mets’ short-stop Jose Reyes to an extremely lucrative six year $106 million contract (pending approval & team physical) with added incentives based on the player’s performances over the course of the season . Team owner Jeffrey Loria in light of this latest flurry of activity in conjunction team President Dave Sansom , VP of Operations Larry Beinfest and general manager Michael Hill had also signed closer Heath Bell and engineered the move of Ozzie Guillen from the Chicago White Sox to succeed Jack McKeon as manager of the team .

Miami Marlins’ front office knows that with the advent of their new state of the art ballpark set to open up their 2012 schedule the right type of environment and atmosphere has to be set that will be conducive to the fans and general population within the Miami locale . Built at the cost oof $515 million the 37,000 seat venue situated in downtown Miami on the site of the old Miami Orange Bowl will be MLB’s latest and newest ballpark . Somehow , I get the feeling that with all of the backroom shenanigans , behind the scenes wheeling and dealing , a great deal of money has not only exchanged hands surreptitiously but also the true cost of this all has actually been withheld from the public at large ! Never mind the fact that the city of Miami government and Miami Dade government have “sold their souls ” to the Devil in order to get this venue built . That asides , I find it somewhat unbelievable that in a little of over five years Jeffrey Loria from having pled poverty as to the financial viability of this organization can now make the prospective outlays being exhibited in having signed Jose Reyes to his $105 million deal , that of Heath Bell’s 3 year 27 million contract and still attempt to sign Albert Pujols to almost certainly what will be a contract that is said will be likely in the region of 10 years and approximately between $220 to $250 million , not including other additional incentives ! . All this from an organization that over the years that has been amongst the lowest salaried teams within baseball ? .

While I remain somewhat dubious of the Miami Marlins and the lengths with which much of the dealings in terms of the ball club’s new venue came into being with a bond issue that in some cases has been of great consternation between the party factions of both the city and county governments of Miami Dade . And it certainly has not at all come as a surprise to me that the SEC (Securities & Exchange Commission ) is about to conduct an investigation into how the financing for the Marlins’ ballpark came into being . The governmental agency while not having arrest powers does have the wherewithal to subject any party to have been found guilty of financial fraud to levy serious fines and subjecting the executives in question , from not holding an executive position within a public or private company . It seems crazy that the public doesn’t decry the fact that taxpayers’ monies are being repeatedly being lavished upon multi millionaire and billionaire professional sport’s franchises owners under the facade and pretense that it is being done to benefit the community !

SEC Examines Marlins Stadium Deal

By TIMOTHY W. MARTIN , REED ALBERGOTTI and MATTHEW FUTTERMAN

The U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into the public financing deal behind the Miami Marlins’ new ballpark.

SEC officials delivered letters to the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County Thursday, requesting financial records, meeting minutes and communications with the team and officials from Major League Baseball, according to a person familiar with the matter. Miami and county officials have until Jan. 6 to deliver the documents.

The federal regulators will examine nearly $500 million in bonds sold to fund the ballpark and the financial deal struck for stadium parking garages, according to the county and to a statement from the team.

A person involved with the ballpark’s financing said the investigation may revolve around the Marlins’ claims that the team needed public help because it could not afford to pay for a new ballpark.

SEC senior counsel Drew Panahi declined to comment on the case.

In a statement, the Marlins said they were aware of the investigation. “Of course we will fully cooperate with the SEC’s investigation as needed and assist in whatever way possible.”

A Miami-Dade County spokeswoman said the county “will comply with the SEC’s request and provide the documents they’re asking for.”

It is not clear whether MLB has received subpoenas. A spokesman for the league declined to comment.

The financing plan for the 37,000-seat ballpark, which was built on the site of the former Orange Bowl and is expected to open next spring, has been a source of controversy.

Under the plan, city and county are responsible for nearly 80% of the stadium’s overall cost of $634 million, according to the Miami Herald, which first reported the subpoenas.

The Marlins had argued that the team needed public help to shore up its finances. Financial documents published last year by the website Deadspin showed the team had been turning a profit.

After the documents were published, Marlins president David Samson told the Palm Beach Post the team showed a hefty profit in certain years when it was conserving money for its ballpark project.

Having finagled the both municipalities’ assistance in bringing about the new ballpark I certainly would like to know what part has been played not simply by Jeffrey Loria and the front office but also by Bud Selig at whose urging Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado simply brow-beated his city commissioners to vote for the approval in their bond raising exercise . And when one bears in mind that both the city and county governments are currently running multi million dollar budgetary deficits , it makes you wonder who is about to come out on the better side of these dealings . Certainly , not the citizens of Miami or Miami Dade County that’s for sure given the economic blight that has hit the entire region of South Florida , and in particular the tri county area of Broward County , Miami Dade and West Palm Beach County , which encompasses the fan base for the Miami Marlins .

The city of Miami has been subpoenad to turn over all financial records concerning the bond issue and any other relevant records pertinent to the SEC’s investigation . And that they have until the 6th January to comply with the request before the FBI would be called in with a warranted search at the behest of the Justice Department . It is not yet clear whether or not Bud Selig’s office and that of the league hierarchy is also subject to a subpoena concerning the investigation . But you can bear in mind that the commissioner will most certainly want to fend off any type of incursion or intrusive power that opens up his office to public scrutiny . I mean , it has become the norm for Selig and his mindless acolytes over the years ! No common sense and not one damn ounce of integrity has ever been known to come from the commissioner’s office much less from the man himself ! But yet somehow the team owners seem to march unison behind the bespectacled Pied Piper while he continues to lead them lower into the depths of sheer ineptitude and mediocrity .

As to the possible fate of the now ongoing investigation by the SEC , well let’s just say that my faith in a governmental agency whose own lax methods , excuses for their failure and recognition as to the malfeasance of the high ranking executives with the financial powerhouses of Merrill Lynch , Goldman Sachs , AIG , Countrywide Financial , Bank of America , Citigroup Inc , Morgan Stanley Inc and a slew of other prominent financial concerns who essentially brought about and wreaked havoc upon the financial sector , specifically the mortgage and banking industry , and literally placed the economy in its present state . It now has me wondering, if they (SEC & Justice Dept) have yet to find anyone there guilty of any wrongdoing , when it is abundantly that was what clearly took place , then what now makes them believe that they will be able to indict anyone concerning this particular issue with regard to financing of the Miami Marlins new stadium ? Would anyone like to proffer up an answer at this juncture ? Anyone , anyone at all ? Well I guess not !

An NFL Season By Any Other Name ………….

An NFL Season By Any Other Name ………….

By tophatal ……….

Well as the NFL season begins to wind its way down with week 13 schedule of games I can’t help but wonder what many of the fans made of the results we witnessed this past Sunday . Is it me , but are the Miami Dolphins that good or were the Oakland Raiders simply that bad ? I might hasten to add that given the fact that the AFC West continues to remain a conundrum I am liable to think that it has to be the latter ! That Raiders’ defense in terms of athleticism can be described as being so ambiguous that one could liken their talents to that of an effeminate group of gay weightlifters ! Injuries or not , that team simply did not come to play as Tony Sparano’s players continue to defy logic . As Charlie Sheen has so infamously stated …… ” duh winning !

Slide show perusal .

Anyone who witnessed the 31-14 ass kicking that the Raiders were subjected to , will know that were Hu Jackson’s team to make the playoffs their foray would not be that long , based on the performance at Sun Life Stadium in Miami , Florida . Given the fourteen “garbage points ” given up by the Dolphins in the waning moments of the game , the margin of victory could very well have been far greater , had the Miami Dolphins players thought to defend their home turf more resolutely . But then again , this a team that has somehow manage to win 4 of their last 5 games , albeit that it might not be enough to dissuade GM Jeff Ireland and team owner Stephen Ross to fire the team’s beleaguered coach , Tony Sparano .

Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore played with a great deal of calm unlike his AFC counterpart Carson Palmer who looked like a deer caught in headlights on the day . The acquisition of Palmer was meant to be seen as something of a transition with the loss of Jason Campbell for the season but it is clear that all of the ring rust cannot hide the fact that player simply , is not as good as first advertized . Never mind the salary that he’s now receiving courtesy of the organization which if anything further undercuts the belief that he is good enough to lead the team into the postseason .

When it is all said and done this victory might well be one that seals the fate of Tony Sparano in terms of immediate future . I certainly do know this , if it takes the second half of the season before his players get up off their ass to play with any kind of resolve , then I have to ask what was it the coach and his coaching staff had been doing in the prior weeks ? Respectability and pride now appear to be the only things that the players are now playing within this Dolphins organization . And I am most certainly sure that Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland may well bring about changes not just in terms of the player personnel but also as it relates to the coaching staff.

If the Oakland Raiders’ loss to the Dolphins might well have been viewed as upset given the fact that the Raiders stood atop of the AFC West . Then knowing that Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos continue to turn the division and league on its ear now must be pissing off the members of “Raider Nation ” . Tebow and his band of gallant band of warriors slayed the Minnesota Vikings while at the same perhaps placing another nail in the coffin of Vikings’ coach Leslie Frazier who clearly isn’t demanding enough from his players or actually holding them accountable for their actions. There’s no semblance of leadership from anyone on the playing staff and Christian Ponder , as good as he might well appear to be is perhaps at two years away from being considered a very good quarterback in this league . Baptism by fire or not he has struggled in large part over the course of this season .

The Minnesota Vikings playing at home lost a high scoring and error filled game in regulation 35-32 , sealing their own fate , much to the dismay of their fans in attendance . And any thought that Zygi Wilf and his partners might have that a $1.255 billion purpose built new venue would be in the organization’s best interests and that of legislators and residents must now be taking a turn for the worse given this laughable display by the team . I am sure that Governor Mark Dayton in knowing that his state legislature has a $5 billion ($5,000,000,000) budget deficit to deal with , has to be perturbed that he is being asked to finance this ostentatious request given the state’s economic plight . I mean , it is not as if Wilf and the front office of the organization are said to be stumping up any monies as a gesture of good faith towards the proposed edifice .

John Elway and the Broncos’ organization know that he may well run the wrath of the fans come the end of the season , with the preferred thinking that he and GM Brian Xanders might well choose to either draft a quarterback for the future while also seeking a free agent during the off season . It is clear for many, who have witnessed Tim Tebow’s play that he places himself at great risk while continuing to lead by example . Calmer heads ought to prevail but is clear that John Fox and Broncos’ quarterback’s coach Adam Gase will ride the ” Tebow train” for as far and as long as it may well take them over the remainder of their season . The Denver Broncos and their fans know that their quarterback is but a concussion or twisted ankle away from seeing their season quite possibly end in doom and gloom. Then what ? The culminating three weeks to the end of the regular season should tell us a great deal about the resolve of this Broncos’ team and whether or they have what it takes to win their first divisional AFC West title since 2005 . Jointly tied atop of the division at 7-5 alongside the Oakland Raiders that race now appears to be a dogfight between these two teams .

” The Dream Team ” in name only the Philadelphia Eagles’ (4-8) season is slowly descending like a piece of fecal matter as it winds its way down the S- bend of a toilet system . If team owner Jeffrey Lurie has any damn sense , then he ought to fire the entire front office along with the coaching staff led by Andy Reid . LeSean McCoy while being a prodigious player he has been under- served this season while DeSean Jackson simply has become a cancer in the locker room with his demands . And the contention that he deserves far more respect than he gets from the organization because he believes that he’s underpaid . Someone ought to remind the player before he gets respect , you simply have be deserving of it to begin with and by decrying the fact that your boss simply is not treating you right because of your salary demands , shows Jackson’s complete lack of maturity and intelligence ! But then again , look at whom he has , as his agent ? It should not at all come as a surprise that Drew Rosenhaus just happens to be the marionette pulling the strings once again !

At this point there is not much more that can be said about that the Philadelphia Eagles’ season that hasn’t been yet well chronicled . Suffice to say that the longer the fans have to endure this idiocy the more likely that it is that Andy Reid , Joe Banner and Howie Roseman will have to be jettisoned along a number of players on the Eagles’ roster . Far too much power has been wielded by the triumvirate , with little to show for it over the past few years .

At the start of the season there were a number of patrons simply jumping unto the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears’ bandwagon . And to a point there might well have been just cause but now herein lies the caveat to this all , where are those fans now , ……. that the wheels have began to fall of those erstwhile vehicles ? Lions’ coach Jim Schwartz has began to show that he simply cannot handle adversity well and neither can his team ! And nothing proved this point more than their complete annihilation 31-17 by Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans , Louisiana , this past Sunday . Two straight losses for the Detroit Lions may not seem a great deal to worry about but when a playoff berth is said to be on the line and the NFC North is now simply out of reach with the Green Bay Packers having but all sealed the division it begs the question how “much heart ” is said to be left on this Lions’ team ?

I have repeatedly said this time and time again , Jay Cutler is simply overrated as a quarterback within the NFL ! Brian Urlacher for all of his leadership qualities and wanting to rally behind his quarterback , now has to understand that all the hype in the world won’t get you anywhere when you’re simply not willing to show that you haven’t an ounce of common sense ! And it is clear that Cutler has little of either in spite of the perceived belief that he’s said to be one of the better quarterbacks within the league . I tend to use the analogy ………” if you dress up pig and call it a sow it simply doesn’t make it one ” !

Jay Cutler is now quite possibly lost to the Bears’ for the remainder of their season and with backup Caleb Hanie having been asked to take the helm the consequences proved to be dire for the team when they took on the lowly Kansas City Chiefs (5-7) . Pardon me for saying this but when you’re held to a measly three points in a low scoring game (10-3 ) at home (Soldier Field in Chicago , Illinois) where neither team either proved or showed that they had an ounce of creativity on the offensive side of the ball then your ass needs to be embarrassed in such a way ! Starting quarterback Caleb Hanie did the team no favors in throwing three interceptions whilst ending up with a QB rating of 23.8 in the Bears’ 10-3 loss suffered at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs .

Things now must be taking a turn for the worse if the rumors are to be believed , as Chicago Bears’ head coach Lovie Smith is said to be considering calling upon the services of either Brett Favre or Donovan McNabb . Clearly , the front office simply didn’t consider calling up either Jim McMahon , Jim Miller or Dave Krieg , not wanting to embarrass themselves ___ but the thought of calling upon either Favre or McNabb wouldn’t be seen as an act of desperation ? Yep, that’s what I thought Lovie Smith’s mental wits no longer seem to be with him ! I can only surmise that GM Jerry Angelo and his head coach (Lovie Smith) share a need to be seen as complete idiots !

Coaches , coach but it’s left to the players to win games . Then can someone honestly explain to me what just happened to be the thought process with Dallas Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett , his coaching staff and the players during the waning moments in regulation of their game against the Arizona Cardinals prior to it going into overtime ? The fact that the Cowboys came off on the losing end of this result 19-13 and still stand atop of the NFC East with a 7-5 record with a one game margin , over the equally befuddling New York Giants (6-6) simply cannot underscore how insipid the division has been this season .

If the aftermath of that loss I am sure that Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones must have wanted to kick Garrett in the area of his genitals , as a way showing his utter disgust in his coach ! Ice the kicker by calling a timeout just as he was about to kick the game winning field goal during regulation ? In negating the play , and then only for kicker Dan Bailey to miss in his second attempt simply shows not only what an asshole Jason Garrett just happens to be but also if anyone is of the belief that this Cowboys’ team can usurp the likes of the Green Bay Packers or New Orleans Saints then clearly they’re not sound of mind or sound in their thinking !

Now with everything on the line in determining the rest of their season the Dallas Cowboys still face two (Week 14) daunting games (Week 17) against their divisional rivals the New York Giants . Anything short of a victory in either game , could very well much seal the fate of the Dallas Cowboys . Jason Garrett may well have been Jerry Jones’ choice to assume the role as successor to Wade Philips but in all honesty what has he actually brought to the table since he assumed coach’s mantle of this team ? It is not as if we have seen any type of real improvement in the play of this roster . We may well have been in awe of DeMarco Murray’s exploits in breaking the franchise’s single game rushing record (23 carries , 253yds , 2 TD’s ) . But one game or season does not a player make , and thus far all one can attribute to Murray is that he is no more than a capable running back in this league .

It Takes Two To Tango But Only One Idiot To Make Things Look Really Bad !

By tophatal

It would appear that former NBA great Ervin “Magic” Johnson is now lining up partners to make a decisive bid for MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers . Johnson in conjunction with venture capital firm Guggenheim Partners /Financial Services LLC , billionaire investor Mark Walter and former league front office executive Stan Kasten  are said to be at the forefront of the consortium looking to make a successful bid for the team . Having been placed into bankruptcy (Chapter 11) in the US Federal Bankruptcy Court , in the state of Delaware , beleaguered owner Frank McCourt had hoped that this would forestall his creditors and the league hierarchy while he looked to reorganize the ballclub and allay the fears of his creditors. Instead what has happened is that McCourt has seen the light and began to realize that he faced a daunting task of convincing the presiding judge as well the league hierarchy and creditors that the organization would still be on a firm financial footing . =====================================================================

One must admit that having seen Johnson as a part owner in the Los Angeles Lakers  where he once held a minority stake (4.5%) in the team , which is currently owned by Jerry Buss . The thought of the former Lakers’ point guard making the switch to spearheading the ownership group for a major baseball franchise does come as something of a surprise ! But with Kasten no doubt on board as head of operations should their bid be successful , one would imagine that given Johnson’s business acumen and success backed by that of Mark Walter and the vast financial assets of Guggenheim Partners , it can only point to some future success for an organization that has been starved of that in recent years .

Los Angeles Lakers’ GM Mitch Kupchak  a long time close friend of Magic Johnson has stated that he firmly believes that the former player and his potential partners can prove to be a great success in reinvigorating a downtrodden Dodgers’ organization . Given the team’s fall from grace and their rather poor performance this past season I find Kupchak’s statement rather refreshing . Granted , the most die hard Dodgers’ fans would be happy with anyone not named McCourt owning this team , having seen the now disgraced owner subject the organization to his capricious and malevolent schemes . So much so , that there were questions raised as to whether or not the club would actually survive or be complete dissolved . But in retrospect even with the late intervention of Commissioner Bud Selig in appointing C . Thomas Schieffer  in overseeing the day to day operations of the Los Angeles Dodgers there was little that could be done to avert the bankruptcy proceedings to go ahead . Has there been ever a time when Selig and his cohorts within the league hierarchy have ever been so despised ? These assholes on a clear day would declare that the sky was dark and that there was turbulent weather ahead if it made them feel good about themselves ! And that has been clearly been the case in the handling of this debacle !

As things now stand , Johnson , Kasten and Walter, along with Guggenheim Partners might not be the only interested parties in acquiring the organization. But it would appear that with the high profiled faces of Magic Johnson and the baseball experience of Stan Kasten this might put them ahead of the pack in terms of potential bidders for the baseball franchise . The auctioning process is being handled by noted investment firm the Blackstone Group . And subject to their vetting of the likely candidate of suitors , a final decision will be made as to the parties going forward in the bidding process . MLB can ill afford to have another mess on its hands in light of the Frank McCourt ” debacle ” and the continued financial mess concerning the New York Mets  and their situation . But such has been the involuntary action of Bud Selig concerning that specific issue that it is indeed hard to know what he might be thinking . My own personal opinion ! Selig is in fact dead from the neck up and is cerebrally challenged to think effectively ! Never mind the fact that he has subjected Jim Crane to repeated embarrassment in the sale of the Houston Astros  from Drayton McClane  to the Houston businessman . How long does it take to get the board of governors and owners together to act expeditiously ? Given the resolve Bud Selig at times , I firmly believe that his tenure as commissioner cannot end soon enough . And that is even with his proposed divisional realignment and adding one more tier to the playoff format to the postseason .

Magic Johnson joins bid to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers Los Angeles (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers could be ready for a little Magic. Magic Johnson has joined a group bidding to buy the beleaguered Dodgers, hoping to restore the luster of a once-glamorous franchise that has been sullied during owner Frank McCourt’s ” messy tenure” . Johnson, the longtime Los Angeles Lakers superstar and former part-owner of the NBA club, is partnering with former Atlanta Braves executive Stan Kasten  and wealthy investor Mark Walter in the upcoming auction for the Dodgers, who filed for bankruptcy protection in June. McCourt finally agreed last month to auction the team at an undetermined future date. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to be part of the Dodgers legacy & bring a World Series championship back to LA,” Johnson tweeted Friday. Johnson has joined a heavyweight group in what’s expected to be a tough competition for the Dodgers: Kasten is the former president of the Braves and Washington Nationals, while Walter is the CEO of a global financial services firm managing more than $125 billion in assets. Their organization will be called Guggenheim Baseball Management, and Walter’s vast financial resources could put the group up front in the bidding. The Los Angeles Times first reported Johnson’s interest in the Dodgers. The news was greeted with enthusiasm across Los Angeles from fans who count Magic among the most popular athletes in Southern California sports history. The three-time NBA Most Valuable Player has become a successful businessman since his second retirement in 1996, with investments in several sectors of commercial real estate. But Johnson’s passion still is sports, and he has spent several years looking for an ownership role in a pro franchise, most recently expressing his interest in returning the NFL to Los Angeles. Johnson amicably left his ownership position with the Lakers in October 2010, selling his 4.5 percent equity stake to Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong  in what’s widely thought to be a wildly lucrative transaction for the former Lakers point guard. ——————————————————————————————— Click on link to read this article in its entirety . ————————————————————————————————

It is hard to now envisage what the future holds for the Los Angles Dodgers , in particular for the likes of Don Mattingly  and his coaching staff , never mind the uncertainty of the players on this team and their overall status from a financial standpoint . Matt Kemp may well have received a lovely parting gift from McCourt in terms of an 8 year $160 million contract but does anyone truly believe that the rest of teammates won’t mind jumping on that particular gravy train when their time actually comes ? Who let the lunatic back into the asylum in allowing this particular farce ? Ned Colletti  and Peter Wilhelm are clearly not that bright , so I can only surmise that this was Frank McCourt’s way of signalling his middle finger ” salute “ to the fans and baseball’s hierarchy !

OK, so the Los Angeles Lakers now find themselves in need of a front court presence in terms of a center given the error prone and at times inconsistent play of Andrew Bynum . But that in of-itself can’t undercut the woes of this team last season especially during the NBA playoffs . To underscore that fact , simply look at the team’s stats and the very fact that what little contribution proffered up by Bynum was simply minuscule at best .

In light of the team’s postseason woes against eventual champions the Dallas Mavericks in the conference finals , you simply knew that inexplicable loss , the bickering amongst the players and the departure of Phil Jackson simply suggested that this Lakers’ team taught too highly of themselves and had no heart . Now , in comes Mike Brown as the successor to Jackson at the behest of Jerry Buss’ son Jim Buss and GM Mitch Kupchak  . It remains to be seen whether or not Brown can replicate much of the success that the attained while the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers . There’s no denying that in having Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol  , he has the core of something far more desirable than anything he had at his disposal while with the Cavaliers . But within the city of Los Angeles the expectations are far much higher for the discerning fans one of the NBA’s most heralded franchises .

If the rumors are to be believed that the Los Angeles Lakers are said to be showing interest in bringing in Kris Humphries into the fold , then I have to question the sanity of the front office of the Lakers under Mitch Kupchak . Humphries currently with the New Jersey Nets and perhaps better known for his 72 day farcical marriage to reality star Kim Kardashian  , rather than for anything achieved over the course of his professional career can’t be seriously thought of as a serious upgraded in talent much less being a productive center within the NBA .

Seven years as a professional within the NBA and there seems to be nothing stands out as a highlight in Kris Humphries career. As to why the Los Angeles Lakers would view him as a comfortable fit within the organization , begs the question is the front office of the organization all the more intent on going more “Hollywood” ? Someone needs to remind Jerry Buss and Mitch Kupchak that the Kardashians aren’t part of the package deal . Less we remember also that Lamar Odom just happens to be on the downside of a career that has often seen more lows than highs and that is the advent of his own celebrity marriage to another of the Kardashian clan (Khloe) .

With the NBA lockout now having ended we will have a truncated schedule of 66 games and no doubt a hectic flurry of free agent movement around the league as it relates to a number of teams looking to bolster their rosters. As an unrestricted free agent there is no doubt that the player will not mind being in an environment that will be conducive to his game . But to my mind that the Los Angeles Lakers if they truly serious upon embarking upon a player capable of being a suitable backup or alternative to Andrew Bynum then the players now said to be available give far more credibility than anything one would think that Humphries is likely to offer .

If the Los Angeles Lakers are to be a success this season then clearly they will have to apply themselves with a great deal of resolve throughout this shortened season . As we have seen a decline in this team , we have seen strides taken in the development of teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder , Denver Nuggets , Dallas Mavericks , Portland Trailblazers and New Orleans Hornets .

The Los Angeles Lakers this upcoming season will have to contend with a great deal more than they had hoped to bargain for . No longer the ” King of the Hill ” their authority has not only been challenged and they can no longer be considered to be the team to beat within the Western Conference . No doubt that they can be considered a presumptive favorite to make the postseason and perhaps win their division with effortless ease but beyond that it would now take more than a betting man to suggest that

Now inasmuch as the NBA hierarchy , team owners and the NBPA  union are said to be relishing this upcoming season and that there now happens to be an accord reached between the league and union (NBPA) . In reality the negotiations that took place with David Stern and Ass’t Commissioner Adam Silver representing the case for the league whereas the opposition led by Billy Hunter and union President Derek Fisher offered little in the way of real encouragement for the fans. What the fans have been given is a mere piece meal because the league still faces a great deal of financial uncertainty that was in no way clearly addressed in terms of a rudimentary and succinct collective bargaining agreement . They will still persist with their rather idiotic insistence that their ” soft salary cap” ( $57.7 million) aids the small market teams along their de-facto tax sharing revenue scheme . But in reality all the NBA has been seen to have done is to hand some teams a life jacket while others have been allowed to slip into the life boat . Care to guess which one of the parties in question is now likely to survive ? Something I clearly don’t believe that David Stern or the union are at all concerned with ! They may well have acted in earnest in trying to persuade the fans they wanted equality for both parties but if the truth be known , absolutely nothing about the NBA’s new agreement is actually sound from a financial standpoint . It certainly does not address the situation where many of the more profitable teams will be able to spend at will but it was simply something that they clearly didn’t want exposed within the public domain .

The NBA during this lockout has lost a great deal more than fan loyalty , if anything it has also the fans’ faith in believing anything that either the league hierarchy or union has to say . Now this season that begins earnest has to be an electrifying one if they are to lure the fans back the arenas around the country this upcoming season and into their postseason foray. ===========================================================================

It’s Wayne’s World …….. It’s Wayne’s World And The Poor Jaguars’ Fans Have Had To Endure It ! …….

By tophatal

I can’t say that I am at all surprised by the firing of Jacksonville Jaguars’ (3-8) coach Jack Del Rio ! I certainly do know this , Del Rio won’t be the only managerial casualty of the 2011-2012 season . Norv Turner , Tony Sparano  and Steve Spagnuoulo  are just three of the other names who could certainly bite the dust at season’s end . Jaguars’ owner is Wayne Weaver is either a misguided fool or simply someone who knew that at the end of the day the gig was up concerning his beleaguered coach . What however , might be more bewildering is the very fact that he offered an contract extension to team GM Gene Smith . Pardon me for saying this , but as a duo, Del Rio and Smith were ineffective when it came to spotting and nurturing talent and the organization’s continued pratfalls as comical as they may well have seemed bore the hallmark of a duo who simply did not know what the hell they were actually doing . Since Smith’s ascension to the position of general manager in 2009 both and Del Rio have combined to assemble a litany of draft picks that have yet to amount to anything . That being said this has been a woefully inept organization over the past few years . ======================================================== ==============================

Some may well point to the fact that the lone bright spot on this current team might be running back Maurice Jones-Drew but by my way of thinking he has labored ? under the weight of expectation while Del Rio and the coaching staff have simply failed to gain any traction and lead the franchise to where they need to be .

With Del Rio’s firing Wayne Weaver had also formally announced that he had agreed in principle to sell the franchise he co-founded and brought into being to Chicago , Illinois businessman Shahid Khan . The prospective new owner pending league approval has stated that he has no intent of relocating the franchise . Personally , from my own standpoint I will believe that when I see it ! At the right price just about anything is possible , albeit that the Jaguars would have to deal with the city of Jacksonville as well as the Duval County government who as co-owners of Everbank Field still have a valid lease with the Jacksonville Jaguars that is not due to expire until 2027 . So any precipitous move prior to some type of formal agreement could very well lead to litigation between the franchise owner and their landlord .

Jacksonville Jaguars Sold To Illinois Businessman For $760 Million

By Mike Ozania , Forbes Staff , Executive Editor Forbes; co-host Forbes SportsMoney YES Network

Wayne Weaver has sold the Jacksonville Jaguars to Shahid Khan, a Pakistan-born entrepreneur and head of Illinois-based Flex-N-Gate Corp, for $760 million. People familiar with the matter say Kahn used $350 million of debt to finance the deal. In August we said the Jaguars were worth $725 million, last among the National Football League’s 32 teams. But in September Walt Disney-owned ESPN signed a new television deal with the NFL that was 73% more than the previous contract. The Jaguars sale price clearly reflects the boost in television revenue given that the most recent sale prior to the Jaguars were the St. Louis Rams, which were acquired by Forbes 400 member Stan Kroenke  in 2010 for $750 million.

The Jaguars play in the NFL’s third-smallest market and Weaver has often had a combative relationship with local politicians over the teams lease at EverBank Field . Last year Weaver cut a deal with the city giving Weaver all of the revenue from the $16.6 million, five-year stadium naming rights agreement with EverBank. The prior agreement gave 25% of the naming rights to the city.

Khan had previously attempted to buy the St. Louis Rams from the children of the late Georgia Frontiere in 2010. But the team was grabbed by Kroenke, who had the right of first refusal to purchase the Rams.

As Wayne Weaver rides off into the sunset under the misguided belief that the franchise is on the verge in stemming the tide and turning things around I have to ask why did he continue endure with the sheer ineptitude shown by Jack Del Rio as a coach ? Surely he could have seen that the with the record of the organization in 2009 and 2010 what improvements if any , were simple incremental at best , if that at all ! This season within the AFC South and the conference (AFC ) in general the Jacksonville Jaguars along with the embattled Indianapolis Colts (0-11) have been truly embarrassing and in terms of sheer ineptitude they have each sank to all all-time low .

With Jack Del Rio now departed it is now left to interim head coach Mel Tucker to guide the team over the remainder of the regular season . A positive showing from the one time assistant and offensive coordinator and he might well have that interim tag removed with the title of permanent head coach being added. But as we know the impending sale all things may well point to the fact that Khan and Smith might be considered to hire someone outside the organization . And here there would be no influx of likely candidates who might be considered for the position . Amongst the more credible candidates likely to seen as potential invitees are Rob Ryan , Bruce Arians , Joe Philbin , Pete Carmichaels , Greg Roman and perhaps with a high profiled candidate such as Jon Gruden  perhaps at the head of the pack . The money and the fact that Gruden would likely wish have ultimate control with regard to all personnel decisions made might just dissuade the front office of the Jaguars from looking at the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach as the likely successor to Jack Del Rio . I have no doubt that Shahid Khan in conjunction with Gene Smith would like to make a big splash in terms of the next hire in order to reflect the organization’s relevance . The Jacksonville Jaguars have had to endure eight painful years under Jack Del Rio with there being little tangible to show during his tenure . 10

This season there are a number of players on the Jaguars’ roster who seem to be having sub-par years but if anything many might subscribe to the fact that they have given up on Del Rio and his coaching staff . Certainly , Maurice Jones-Drew , Blaine Gabbert  , Deji Karim , Mike Thomas , Marcedes Lewis , Jason Hill , Daryl Smith , Rashean Mathis , Dawan Landry and Paul Posluszny  have simply been spinning their wheels aimlessly going nowhere .

Week 13 sees the Jacksonville Jaguars playing hosts to the equally misguided San Diego Chargers (4-7 ) under another presumably ” lame duck coach” , in, Norv Turner . And if the Chargers’ coach is not fired at the end of their now mediocre season then the citizens as part of the “Occupy Wall St Movement” or should organize a proxy organization and demonstrate vociferously for the ouster of Turner and that ” moronic imbecile ” of a general manager A. J Smith ! What these two have allegedly achieved for the organization since their tenure began could be written on the back of a first class stamp and mailed to Timbuktu ! Chargers’ owner Dean Spanos are you that much of an asshole or has it simply been ingrained within your family’s DNA ? God knows this could be a game where no wants actually wants to bear witness to , given the combined ineptitude shown by both teams this season !

It has been clear for all to see that Wayne Weaver simply overestimated the attributes of Jack Del Rio this season and that is even with the advent of the Indianapolis Colts having lost Peyton Manning for their entire 2011 campaign . The AFC South not often thought of as being one of the more glamorous divisions within the NFL much less the AFC had simply become a pick ’em as to the likelihood of an outright winner to succeed the Colts whose domain the division had become perennially over the years .

This season however the AFC South seems to be the Houston Texans’ (8-3 ) for the taking albeit that Tennessee Titans (6-5) may well feel that they are in with a chance of turning the table and making the division their very own . But such has been the inconsistency of the teams within the AFC South that it would take a highly skilled bettor to lay odds as to which of the two teams between the Texans and Titans are likely to end up as the divisional champions . Would you be up to the task of picking the undoubted winner ? At this juncture it’s simply anyone’s guess as to what that outcome might just be .

When it is all said and done many will view Wayne Weaver as either a very good NFL franchise owner or simply a franchisee who got lost amongst the rush chasing success only to be fooled into thinking that many of the decisions made at the time just happened to be the right ones . From my own perspective I view Weaver just as any other owner within the NFL whose only visibility beyond his business dealings was to be seen as one of the “darlings” of the league . Now having taken the route of another downtrodden owner his basking in the fact that he felt that the organization is now on the right path having agreed to sell the franchise speaks to his sheer and utter stupidity ! But then again , he now has just over seven hundred million reasons ………….. why he ought to now feel really happy ! As to the points raised within this piece how do you view the immediate future for the Jacksonville Jaguars ? And do you believe that the recent decisions made by Wayne Weaver were the right ones in terms selling the franchise , the firing of Jack Del Rio and the re-signing of Gene Smith to a three year contract extension ? By all means do leave a comment as you deem fit . 😉 ================================================= =============================
