It Ain’t Easy Being Cheesy But It Certainly Helps To Have A Sense of Humor …….. Unless You Happen To Be The New York Jets ……

By tophatal ….

You simply cannot deny that there have been so many teams that have been a complete disappointment over the course of this NFL season . Within the AFC , in particular a great deal was expected of the Oakland Raiders , San Diego Chargers and specifically the New York Jets .

Over the last two seasons with each commencement prior to their schedule’s beginning Jets’ coach Rex Ryan has come to make those all too bold and brash statements as to his team’s readiness to be the dominant force within the NFL . Granted, having taken those teams to two successive AFC championship games in 2009 and 2010 . But as we know Ryan and those teams came up short against their opponents . That however, hasn’t stopped the New York Jets’ coach from once again making those pompous and rather seemingly outrageous statements concerning the expectations for his team concerning this season . Low and behold the Jets were about as much of a competitive force with regard to their schedule as General Custer’s battle was said to be when he and the 7th Cavalry steered down over 2,000 members of the Sioux Nation at the battle of the “Little Big Horn “ .

An 8-8 season simply put a damper on the New York Jets’ season and the backlash against the team and many of its primary stars has left a bitter taste in the mouths of those players with there now being rumors discourse dissension and claims that players simply were lazy . Never mind the fact that the quick departures from Ryan’s coaching staff made this situation all the more unbelievable with their critical comments of the head coach and the team’s starting quarterback Mark Sanchez . It certainly hasn’t helped that team captain Santonio Holmes being something of an irritant in the locker room spreading discourse amongst the roster .

What might have been all the more unpalatable was the fact that in the team’s final game of the season unwittingly ended with a 19-17 loss to the wayward Miami Dolphins . The defeat stymied the New York Jets in their efforts to make the postseason for the last three consecutive seasons . Rex Ryan for his part has been somewhat mute in part as to the issues that derailed his and the team’s ambitions . But with the vitriol and backlash against the team and specifically the aforementioned players there now has to be the view as to whether or not this team in its present guise is simply good enough to be a perennial playoff contender , much less a legitimate franchise actually capable of winning the Superbowl .

The problems for the New York Jets this season have many been and varied as to the team’s inconsistency . But moreover it has been the inconsistency shown my Mark Sanchez as it would appear that his game has regressed greatly when compared to season’s past . The heated criticism of Sanchez in some cases while valid also has to be leveled at the coach . Bright lights , big city and the never-ending calls for his presence at so many none related football events may well have got Mark Sanchez to believe that he was “a star ” and that he needn’t hone his craft as a quarterback within the NFL and amongst the elite at the position . If ever there was further proof that the quarterbacks to come out of USC in the last seven years have failed to live up to expectations then Matt Cassel , Matt Leinart , Carson Palmer and Mark Sanchez are your clear indicators of that . Other than Sanchez neither of the other have led their respective teams over the course of their NFL careers to a playoff victory . If anything when you’re simply being coddled at the college level by Pete Carroll at a program that had its problems both on off the field of play then it simply would explain the mindset of those players upon their entry to the NFL .

Mark Sanchez for his part hasn’t made a public statement concerning the criticism but his coach , the front office and teammate Nick Mangold have been quick to try and deflect that criticism by saying that Sanchez is a hardworking , meticulous , studious and his work ethic is unquestionable . That’s all well and good but many of these rumblings would not have come to the fore were parts of it not true . Team owner Woody Johnson has tried to downplay the percolating controversy but also with Greg McElroy also voicing his thoughts on the divisiveness of the locker room , it begs the question what the hell is going on and where is the so called leadership on this team ? Furthermore , when you have LaDainian Tomlinson contemplating retirement because he no longer has the will or the heart to play within the NFL . If such a highly respected and no doubt future Hall of Famer has that to say about the discontent he feels that there is within the organization , then there has to be some veracity to much of what is now said to be emanating from within the Jets’ organization .

The real issues for the New York Jets over the course of the season was the mere fact that apart from Sanchez’s game having regressed, both the defense and run offense simply defied logic with their anemic performances . ” Revis Island” as in Darrelle Revis and others on the team’s secondary were simply lax …….. the rushing attack as a unit was as about as meaningful , as members of the orchestra who played as the Titanic met its fate , having struck an iceberg , while in the Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage .

The woes of the offense were telling as I alluded to earlier , with it having meant the departure of Brian Schottenheimer , offensive coordinator for the organization. Schottenheimer’s leaving , has seen a quick turnaround with the franchise hiring former Miami Dolphins’ head coach Tony Sparano . As to what the latter will bring to the team in terms of a renewed offensive capability remains to be seen . But it is clear that it will have to be great deal better than what has been offered up to the Jets’ fans this past season .

Now inasmuch as Rex Ryan has been rather outspoken as to what he believes is the New York Jets’ greatness as an NFL franchise it begs the question if he actually thinks that his team just happens to the best NFL franchise within the “Big Apple” , then why was it they failed so miserably over the course of the season ? An 8-8 record to my mind simply indicates marginal acceptability , if that ! This was a franchise expected to contend and it was clear that the coach and his coaching staff believed that the pieces were in place to make a legitimate run at the Superbowl . Instead , the aspirations of the football team was simply misplaced by what now appears to be complacency and a complete lack of understanding as to what it truly takes be a perennial contender and a real success within the NFL . Former Jets’ great Joe Namath made his opinions known earlier on in the season and prior to its commencement , when he also stated that he had his doubts about Mark Sanchez and what he brings to the organization as a player. As the team’s only Superbowl MVP winner it beg the question if ” Broadway Joe” had his doubts then, why was it that no one else within the organization didn’t feel it necessary to perhaps try to set about honing the skills of the young quarterback , rather than simply witness his game regress ? Now with all the rumors fomenting that GM Mike Tannenbaum might pursue a trade for the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning it makes you wonder whether or not Sanchez’s days as the team’s incumbent starting quarterback are now actually numbered ?

  1. “Nick have you ever seen a grown man in the showers naked holdin’ his ‘package’ ” ? ……… ” Mark you’re so gay …. no I mean you’re so funny ” ! Mark Sanchez and Nick Mangold (right)

If Nick Mangold loves Sanchez that much I wonder if he has a life size poster of his quarterback on his bedroom wall ?

Far be it for me to suggest but the Jets this past season were no better than the Cowboys or Raiders for that matter ! What a god damn mess that organization seems to be ! Never mind the fact that Rex Ryan continues to be a moronic ass with his claims . Hey Rex , ’til you and the team win something shut the ##ck up !

Why does Joanna Krupa make suddenly feel all hot and bothered all over ? Ah Joanna , Joanna , Joanna ! Any answers ?

I’m wondering what the postseason now has in store for us concerning the divisional rounds ! As for the Jets’ Rex Ryan he should no longer give any candid interviews about his team’s aspirations. Each time he does they end being snake bitten .

I know what you mean concerning Joanna Krupa ! It makes me want to lay some “wood” !

Businesses in C Florida are now taking this “Tebowing thing ” to unimaginable heights don’t you think ? Anything to drum up business .

Even chic’s wanna get in on this ‘Tebowing ‘ thing . I wonder if she can perform like that in a missionary position ?

How ’bout these girls as they take their devotion to a whole new level ?

  2. I kinda feel bad for Sanchez. He doesn’t deserve to be called out by anonymous people. Why don’t those guys let their names be in the article, their third string QB had no problem with it. In the end I could care less about any NY team…

    1. chappy 81

Sanchez was coddled in school much like many of predecessors in recent years and he expected the same crap while with the Jets . Now things have come full circle and he’s got to prove himself ____ either he gets his act together or the front office led by Mike Tannenbaum will be looking elsewhere . Ryan hasn’t helped the situation with dumb ass statements concerning his belief that the team was the best NFL franchise within the tri state area . The Giants have proven otherwise this season . ‘nough said ! Stuff like this isn’t leaked for the fun of it as in part there has to be some veracity to it all . Why else would LaDainian Tomlinson speak so openly of there being discontent in the locker room and with him now contemplating retirement ? The beat writers for the Jets need to get a dose of reality , wake up and smell the friggin’ coffee !

Apathy and narcissism runs too damn deep within the city and that’s there damn problem because when it comes to intelligence and NYC sports’ fan you can barely find any whatsoever in the true sense of the word !

  3. There’s a line near the beginning of “Remember the Titans” when the team is slowly starting to put things together. The two defensive All-Americans, Julius Campbell and Gary Bertier, have a heart to heart and Campbell tells Bertier “Attitude reflects leadership.”

Usually when things go wrong, we point to the head coach, unless of course we’re talking about the San Diego Chargers, in which case the head coach gets an extension, but in New York’s case, this all clearly has to fall on Ryan’s lap.

He’s taken them to back to back AFC Championship games before shitting the bed this season so that has to count for something.

If Sanchez isn’t getting it done, then make sure he does or find someone else to fit the bill, but ultimately, it’ll be, and should be, Ryan who takes the blame for his locker room being such a mess.

    1. Chris Humpherys(@SportsChump)

It’s not simply accountability but also leadership on that team from the veterans . Tomlinson got sick and tired of the continued bickering and in-fighting and the fact that the coach let it go on for so long and still have an ingrate like Holmes who’s always been trouble wherever he’s been throughout his NFL career . Why’d you think that the Steelers got rid of his dumb ass ? Who the f##k was dumb enough within the organization to think Santonio Holmes ought to be a team captain for the Jets ?

Back to back seasons …… who the hell remembers who finishes second or is even placed in a race ? The Jets’ record (8-8) this past season indicates exactly who they are and to my mind how overrated they actually were !

Rex Ryan has to learn that before you get “respect ” you to have god damn earn it ! And as of now he and the Jets simply haven’t earned that right !

It’s being rumored that Tannenbaum might pull the trigger and seek to get Peyton Manning from the Colts .

Report: Some Jets rip Mark Sanchez

As the New York Jets gut their offensive coaching staff, some players are reportedly wondering whether they have the right field general in place in Mark Sanchez.

The New York Daily News reported on Wednesday that it had spoken to key Jets players and they anonymously questioned the young quarterback’s work ethic and said that the team might be better off with a QB like Peyton Manning, if the Colts made him available.

“We have to bring in another quarterback that will make [Sanchez] work at practice,” said one player, according to the newspaper. “He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched.”

Sanchez had a career-high 26 touchdown passes this season, but he also committed a career-high 26 turnovers, including nine during the Jets’ season-ending three-game losing streak. He ended the season 23rd in quarterback rating and 28th in completion percentage.

According to ESPN’s Total Quarterback Rating, which measures the QB’s total contribution on the field and not just passing efficiency, Sanchez went from 27th in the league in his rookie season to 18th his second year. But he regressed to 30th in 2011, obviously not progressing the way the team had hoped.

  4. The entire Jets fiasco is such a mess. To start, they aren’t even a very talented team, and to add all of these criticisms from anonymous players is just a recipe for disaster.

    1. brief22

It became a mess prior to the start of the New York Jets’ season the moment that Ryan opened his mouth with the proclamation that the Jets were the best team in NYC and the tri state area. Now we all know how that crap worked put don’t we ? Jets’ backup qb Greg McElroy simply said what he’s witnessed this season in the lokcer room . At the same time LaDainian Tomlinson said as much in his statement at the press interview that officially ended the team’s season . The “beat writers “ in New York as well as the print and tv media have the IQ of a gnat !

This past season the Jets simply have been a joke as they have no leadership and the defense played like a bunch of pansies ! And as for their running game it was an eyesore ! None effective and absolutely of no real impact alongside Sanchez’s inconsistent play over the course of the season.

      tophatal ……

  5. It all starts with the head coach. Sanchez is not that good yet. Will he be? who knows at this point. He needs to work on his game. Maybe a new Offensive coordinator will work. if not get rid of his ass. The Jets are selfish. Holmes and the rest need a punch in the mouth. That will wake up his silly ass

  6. Personally I never really blame a coach unless it is blantant……shit one can only teach so much…..Two of the 2 best coaches I knew of in “my” era were Noll and Madden….but they even lost games It comes down to team-mates making plays TOGETHER!

    1. al clements

There’s no denying that Madden and Noll have been amongst the best ever to have coached in the NFL .

But tell me what has Rex Ryan …. actually achieved as a coach in the NFL ? He may well have guided the Jet to two AFC championship game appearances but he’s yet to win the game that really matters and that’s a damn Superbowl ! His pompous ass is one who believes that he and his team commands respect but he seems to forget that before you can get respect you have to to damn well earn it and as of the yet the Jets have not done a fucking thing to deserve it much less earn it from anyone within the league much less from the NFL fan in general !

      tophatal ….

  7. Jets aren’t even close and they have some heavy contracts to lift going forward as well. The core of the team will stay intact. Whether or not it becomes rotten or not will be up to Ryan. Rex has some big-time work to do. Rex needs to just stop promising things and coach each game as if it is his last. That might be a good position for him to take anyway…
