Crescent City Blues ……….

Crescent City Blues

By Tophatal

As the NFL prepares for their showcase event , it seems somewhat tactless that the city of New Orleans as well as the NFL hierarchy simply tries to gloss over the blight that still affects the city to this day , in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina . Crime within the city has petered off slightly, but New Orleans’ homicide rate remains amongst the highest in nation , ranking it up alongside that of Chicago’s. New Orleans’ mayor , Mitch Landrieu while happy to see the event staged in the Crescent City , has to know that while the city comes under a global microscope this upcoming Sunday , his greatest concern has to be , how to best deal with the blight that still ravages his city , with the ongoing corruption , mistrust of the Police Department and the very fact that his predecessor , Ray Nagin will soon go to trial, on corruption and mail fraud charges in an indictment obtained by the US Justice Department .

While there are wildly differing views and economic estimates as to the economic impact the staging of the Superbowl has on a municipality , it would not be out of the realms of reality to suggest it would in excess of $1 billion ($1,000,000,000) in the leadup to the event itself , during the fortnight in which the city will have been the beneficiaries of the revenues in question . One billion dollars is something of a conservative estimate, in view of the events that are staged within the confines of New Orleans . Furthermore , with the exposure gained , there has to be future growth potential derived from the event’s staging. through the city

Now, while the city’s residents can take pride in the fact that this will be eleventh time that they will have staged a Superbowl . It cannot have escaped their attention how poorly the city , state and federal government by way of FEMA , still remain , poor in responding to their needs . Billions of dollars have been poured into the state, and the city to repair infrastructure , but yet there remains several thousand homes and businesses still left in a state of disrepair. Be it, through graft and corruption, the long-held notion as to how things are done within the city and state , there remains little if any optimism that the New Orleans can once again return to the splendor it once had .

All of the altruism and optimism , that went with the election of Bobby Jindahl (R-La) , who succeeded the “ hapless” Kathleen Blanco , as governor of the state , has now become all the more glaring , when one considers that Jindahl’s administration and the legislator are hopelessly gridlocked in dealing with so many of Louisiana’s, most acutest of needs .

The Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana , will be the stage for the NFL’s showcase event , as the Baltimore Ravens will play their NFC counterparts , conference champions , the San Francisco 49ers . . Both teams had truly tremendous seasons by way of their play and the results record over the their respective schedules .

A great deal will be made of the fact that that the two opposing head coaches are siblings , with Jim Harbaugh facing off against his brother, John Harbaugh , in a game that might not necessarily create warring factions amongst the Harbaugh clan . But that remains to be seen between now and the culmination of the big event . Whatever one might now feel at this juncture , both teams are thoroughly deserving of their present positions , by way of their play in the postseason .

Quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick have been placed on the game’s greatest stage , where they will be both entrusted teams on a path to undoubted success . In what will be the most important games of their respective careers , these two quarterbacks will be looking to extol their abilities and indicate to the fans that their ascent to their present positions is no mere fluke but a belief in their own skill-set and the imbued faith shown in them by their respective head coaches.

Now while the media seeks those emotional stories to tug at the heart strings , as the game approaches, while Ray Lewis seeks to bow out , after an illustrious career in the NFL , his story , will be , by no means the biggest to be had , in the buildup to the event on Sunday. There are, a number of subplots to be expounded and placed in the public domain . Another seasoned veteran , who has been overlooked for much of the season , has been Niners’ wide receiver , Randy Moss . The player brought in earlier this season by GM Trent Baalke , to complement what was as such a moderately average wide receiving corps , could very well be playing his last professional game in the NFL , should the San Francisco 49ers prove to be triumphant. As to whether or not Kaepernick will now rise to the occasion in the biggest game of his career with the weapons at his disposal , will go a great way in telling us a great deal about the demeanor of this sophomore quarterback drafted by the franchise in 2011 .

While the rumblings have now subsided, with many questioning Jim Harbaugh’s decision to have Colin Kaepernick replace Alex Smith earlier in the season , after Smith initially went down with a concussion . I have always felt that the young quarterback offered his team more chances to win , than his more experienced predecessor ! Kaepernick , having won the position outright , he now has the franchise on the cusp of seeking their sixth Superbowl title .

Ozzie Newsome , the general manager of the Baltimore Ravens , might just be one of the most unassuming front office executives in the entire NFL . He has quickly, transformed this roster into in all action fully accomplished and cohesive unit. In recent years, his drafting of a pool of players , who have proven to be productive. And it has been this mindset that has allowed Harbaugh coaching staff to have attained the success we have seen recent weeks from the Baltimore Ravens , in spite of the recent upheavals to that staff. Cam Cameron , was summarily dismissed as the offensive coordinator , when it felt, that the team was not getting the best out of their running and passing game during the months of November and December . The dismissal of Cameron , led to the immediate promotion of Jim Caldwell , the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. In the ensuing weeks that have followed , primarily in the playoffs , where we have seen Joe Flacco raise the level of his play , to the point where he might now be considered the best performing quarterback during the postseason.

With Joe Flacco’s existing contract set to expire at the end of this postseason , the rumblings are that the player will seek a deal , commensurate with that of the highest paid players at the position within the NFL . If that amounts to a five or six year $100 million deal , I am not so sure , even in light of a Ravens’ triumph, the player is entitled to that sort of a compensation package. As good as Flacco has been for this Baltimore Ravens , it has only been in 2012 , where we have seen the maturation of the player simply reach a “peak level “ of efficiency and maturity on his part , and amongst his peers in the AFC , let alone amongst the rest of his contemporaries in the NFL , as a whole .

There have been relatively few meetings between the two teams , and their most recent match-up was not exactly a memorable event in terms of all-round productivity from either of these franchises . A 16-6 victory by the Baltimore Ravens was enough to suggest that we might well be in for either a thoroughly enticing ball game , showing the defensive capabilities of both teams or we the fans will granted the unwanted privilege of witnessing an event that could end up being a monstrous bore . And with the anticipated viewership , tens of millions nationally , and upwards of 1.3 billion globally , in what of what should be this year’s highest rated and watched television event. I for one , will be hoping , that this Superbowl provides us with a thoroughly exciting game , and one which will be totally memorable for all of the right reasons ! The NFL needs that sort of an uplifting event after the mishaps and pratfalls imparted upon the fans after another disastrous season of leadership during the tenure of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell .

As a fan are you entirely happy with the staging of Superbowl 47 in the city of New Orleans , even as the city and state slowly work towards repairing not only its infrastructure, after the recent natural disasters, but also, its still tarnished reputation ? And what if anything , do you hope to see from this game, in terms of the undoubted competitiveness of both teams ? By all means, do take time to leave a comment on this, and anything else you believe to be pertinent to the subject matter .

The residents of the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans have indeed shown a great deal of resilience , but you simply cannot deny the incompetence still remains at all levels of government not just within the state but also at the federal level eight years on , after Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent natural catastrophes that have taken place within the state .

Mitch Landrieu as mayor of the city inherited a corrupt incompetence infested city government from his predecessor Ray Nagin . And with so many ;parishes as well as Orleans Parish still in disrepair , the city and NFL are seeking to gloss over all of the ongoing problems while trying to create the perception that everything remains , calm , peaceful and above board . The city is still crime riddle , with a homicide rate (gun violence ) that is amongst the top ten in the entire nation . And while all of this is ongoing Governor Bobby Jindahl tries to paint a remarkably elusive picture as if the state is back on track under his stewardship , when it , clearly is not .

As to the game itself , hopefully the event can bring out the best that the NFL has to offer from both teams , while thoroughly entertaining those in attendance , as well as the tens of millions watching nationally , and the hundreds of millions watching globally.

These two teams are so evenly matched that in spite of their respective records , even with the Niners being 3 1/2 point favorites over the Ravens , there is still not a great deal to choose between the two franchises . In their head to head meetings, their games have never been one , where the margin of victory has been excessively wide . Their most recent meeting a 16-9 victory by the Ravens , was simply proof of that .

  1. I’m glad that the Super Bowl is being held in the Big Easy. I hope that the events held there will help the people prosper and continue making New Orleans a truly one of a kind city.
    Laissez bon temps rouler!

I think it’s a shame that neither Beyonce` or Alicia Keys will provide us with a wardrobe malfunction , when they perform at the Superbowl , this upcoming Sunday . Damn !

If only Kate Upton were a singer instead of an SI swimsuit model . Oh well , you can’t win ’em all ! LOL,LOL,LOL !!!

Like you I’m thrilled that the NFL’s showcase event is being held in the Big Easy /Crescent City ! However, the really disturbing thing, has been in spite of the blight that hit the region , it would appear that the level of incompetence and corruption continues unabated , never mind the level of crime and specifically , that of gun related homicides , which still remain amongst the highest in the nation .

Former mayor Ray Nagin has been indicted on so many federal charges that it doesn’t bear thinking about . The state’s Democratic Senator and federal legislator Mary Landrieu , is still pleading for even more money ($15 billion [$15,000,000,000]) to be poured into the state , even after it has been proven that the corruption has become and still remains widespread in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina . Never mind that the state has done little to go after the criminals who are perpetrating many of these fraudulent crimes .

As for the governor , Bobby Jindahl , he has been all smiles and grins , and very little else , since he succeeded Kathleen Blanco . A great deal of money is still being poured into the infrastructure of New Orleans , but much of that has been in vain and a complete waste in a number of cases , with there being little oversight coming from FEMA or the state’s own department of Homeland Security .

  3. I hope its a good game. It should be. I am neither a Ravens nor 49ers fan. The nature of football will be changed next year and the NFL will be a glorified flag football league. If player safety is the real issue then make better equipment.

    1. Bobby Gee

You would think that would be , of the utmost importance to Roger Goodell and the union , working in conjunction with another to get the equipment manufacturers to produce better protective gear for the players , specifically helmets ? But no , it would appear to be the opposite , as all , Goodell’s idiotic dumb ass continually points to , are the increased profits of the NFL . As to the Players’ Union and their stance on the issue , when have you ever heard anyone from within their hierarchy speak equivocally , coherently and eloquently on the matter ? Both sides are being ran by a bunch of self-absorbed idiots .

I concur with what you’re saying ! As I believe the game won’t be a high scoring Superbowl contest , as I think it will be of a more defensive minded duel , with the deciding factor coming down to time of possession and who commits the least turnovers . Both Flacco and Kaepernick are about to be placed under a great deal of pressure on the biggest stage of their professional careers .

      Tophatal ………….

  4. I left my heart in San New York so I’m predicting a Baltimore win. We have had some very good games over the past several years unlike the boring blowouts that we were forced to endure there for a while, so here’s hoping another competitive one is in the offing..

    1. Fantasy Furnace /Hank

The last that the NFL wants is for this game to be a complete blowout with one side completely dominating the other , that by halftime the Superbowl (SBXLVII) in the viewers’ minds will have become a foregone conclusion , and the decision being made to switch channels that’s unless we’re promised a wardrobe malfunction , courtesy of either Alicia Keys or Beyonce` Knowles-Carter aka Mrs Jay-Z ?

The two starting quarterbacks in this game will have such a big part to play that neither can afford to make any major blunders as both defenses have been very good during the regular and postseason . Say nothing of the prowess of the offenses in question .

      Beyonce` , now that’s what I’m talking about , I like it !

      Alicia Keys

Who would you prefer too see have a wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl ….. Beyonce` or Alicia Keys , if not both ?

      Tophatal ……….

  5. I’m not sure if there will ever be a clear solution to the problems in New Orleans. I guess all they can do is keep trying to move forward. Hurricane Katrina was a huge obstacle to overcome, and the work is not finished. But this Super Bowl should be a big shot in the arm for the city as they continue to rebuild.

    1. Maurice Barksdale

The clear solution is to make a forceful effort to stamp out the corruption , at all levels of government within the state of Louisiana ! To date, has the Louisiana , State Attorney General , James D ” Buddy” Caldwell , indicted anyone ? It has been left to the US Justice Department , who to my mind under AG , Eric Holder , just happens to be one of the most inept and incompetent governmental agencies in the cabinet and the entire US government !

Governor , Bobby Jindahl came in on a wave of hope and optimism and so far, he’s failed to deliver anything of substance , instead he’s been serving up a great deal of rhetoric and platitudes .

Girls just want to have fun .

As an avid NFL fan , I simply hope that both teams put on a fantastic spectacle for the viewing public and for those in attendance at the Mercedes-Benz (New Orleans) Superdome !

      Tophatal ………..

    2. I liken the current mess in New Orleans and the ongoing incompetence to the idiotic nonsense spouted by both Ben Bernanke of the FRB and Tim Geithner of the Treasury , when it came to the stimulus package and the bailout of the financial sector , using taxpayers’ monies . The banks were willingly malicious in their actions as they chased after profits , and it’s the same thing in New Orleans with regard to ongoing graft and corruption , which is obviously ingrained into the way of life as well as with regard to the ongoing political environment within the state .

“Just stick to the prepared script and follow my lead ” Tim Geithner ,left , and Ben Bernanke

The mess in Louisiana and how it is being dealt with is reminiscent of the ” morons” who sit on the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee , collectively they have the collective IQ of a dried up fecal matter . Tim Geithner ,left , and Ben Bernanke . Neither of these two individuals i questions are that bright to begin with .

      Tophatal ….

  6. So for Superbowl 47 , we have the game , pre and half-time entertainment and some of the funniest tv ads that’ll be interspersed throughout the coverage . And about the only thing missing is the guarantee of a wardrobe malfunction a la Janet Jackson . C’mon , now ladies , ( Beyonce’ and Alicia Keys) show us your tits ! It’s what we sex starved males actually live for , next to booze , porn and sex !

    Alicia Keys

    Janet Jackson

    Tophatal ………….

    1. al clements

I hear Vegas isn’t offering odds on either Alicia Keys or Beyonce’ having a wardrobe malfunction ? What’s wrong with the world today when you can’t even see a piece of T and A on a family friendly screening of the Superbowl but during prime-time television you can get all the sex and violence one can muster ? LOL,LOL ,LOL !!!

Beyonce` (left) and Alicia Keys . They both will be performing at the Superbowl , with Keys singing the national anthem and Beyonce’ performing during the game interval at half time .

Show us your tits , ladies ?

Janet Jackson plead with Goodell to perform again, saying she’d show both nipples and voluntarily pay the FCC fine .

    2. al clements

Everyone despises at least one team in the NFL for one reason or another . Personally, I can’t stand fat chicks who try to pull off wearing skin tight jeans when they have a big ass ! LOL,LOL,LOL !!! That’s just me however !

Was she actually someone’s prom date ?

      Tophatal ……………….

  7. Goodell’s explanation behind the power outage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome , simply summed up the commissioner’s season as a whole , comedic , laughable and totally incompetent ! As , was the response overall from the technicians there , at the venue ! Do they not practice test drills, for such instances , given the the problems that the state of Louisiana has had in the last eight years ? Simply a microcosm of everything , one would come to expect of a country that is now so lacking in leadership , and is simply bereft of creativity and ingenuity !

    Tophatal ……………….

  8. So the idiots of the New Orleans Exposition Authority , owners and operators of the Superdome are are suggesting that the venue’s electrical problems were a minor and in no part played a part in the issues of Sunday . All this and the idiotic suggestion by Mayor Mitch Landrieu that the city performed well . Only an idiot politician from the state of Louisiana would now suggest that the city performed well in the aftermath of the embarrassment that took place at the venue where the Superbowl had just been staged .

    Tophatal …….
