Speak no evil , see no evil and hear no evil

Well modesty forbids me to gloat , but I can’t help but feel that while the San Antonio Spurs many of the doubters of this team must now be somewhat disappointed . At the ripe of old age of thirty-seven , Tim Duncan is still proving that he remains a formidable player after all these years . Gregg Popovich , has now guided the team to their fifth NBA Finals` appearance since 1997. The franchise is also seeking to win their fifth title under Popovich`s tenure . This much we do now know , whoever the Spurs are to meet in the upcoming Finals , will be meeting a rejuvenated team with three future Hall of Fame players on the team`s current roster .

In the unlikeliest of situations, San Antonio simply slipped by the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference Finals in a four-game sweep of their conference counterparts . For Lionel Hollins and his coaching staff of the Grizzlies , theirs was a commendable year , where their season-high came by way of their first round defeat of the number one seeds in the conference , the Oklahoma City Thunder . Suffice to say , as the Spurs await the winners of the ongoing hard-fought series between the Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers .

Now while the Heat have taken a 2-1 lead in their series , no one is saying that this duel has reached a finality by way of LeBron James and his teammates having slammed the door shut on Pacers` postseason aspirations . This still remains an unfinished and a completely unwritten chapter , a number of plot-lines and episodes that still remain unresolved .

The baseball season has become something of an anathema as the duels between the pitchers and batters remains a highly competitive one . That being said, there is very good reason to believe that if things play out as they currently are , the fans MLB analysts alike , could be in for a great deal of fun , as the year unfolds .

Last season’s Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera is ahead of last season’s pace , as he looks to possibly make history as the game’s only repeat champion in that specific category . Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers (29-20) are themselves riding high in the AL Central , with Jim Leyland’s players seemingly looking to run away with the division . However , in light of that all, the Cleveland Indians , led by new installed manager Terry Francona has the Indians a mere 2½ games behind the Tigers .

Far be it for me to suggest , but I believe that the last time Indians Tigers contended for anything in baseball , I was in the midst of a divorce , not exactly a happy time for myself and presumably the franchise at the time . Amicable as the parting was said to be , it must be said , my ex-wife doesn’t remain on my list of high priorities . In the case of the Cleveland Indians winning does remain utmost at the top of their agenda , along regaining their respectability amongst their peers within the game.

If there is likely to be a managerial casualty within the game at present , then one could possibly look no further than Bo Porter of the Houston Astros , Don Mattingly of the Los Angeles Dodgers , Mike Redmond of the Miami Marlins and Terry Collins of the New York Mets . All three managers currently have their respective teams playing sub .500 baseball , and I might, the sort of mediocre baseball , that I seriously doubt that their owners or general managers thought would be so dire .

I am not about to go into any in-depth prognostication as to why I believe that four managers in question should be relieved of their duties . Yet , there is enough evidence there to suggest that this season , neither of the aforementioned individuals have done anywhere near enough to guide their respective teams , with any great authority . Mattingly’s position on appearance alone , might appear to be all that tenuous , but you simply cannot overlook that the Dodgers , in spite of the team’s compilation of injuries , the team has performed miserably . What makes this all the more embarrassing , is the very fact that with a $200 million payroll , team owners , Magic Johnson , Todd Boehly . Peter Guber and Mark Walter , may well be putting on a brave face , while their ball-club is beset by on the field issues . Yet who would have guessed that this team would be performing so badly in the midst having been purchased with a $2 billion price tag and with the lingering odor of former owner Frank McCourt still wafting over Dodgers’ Stadium , in Los Angeles California , like rancid feline urine . It begs the question that in spite of the big splash and the bold predictions , the Dodgers have come up way short of Johnson’s own lofty expectations for this team and the season.

The Dodgers will entertain their cross-town rivals the Los Angeles Angels today in a game to be played at Dodgers Ballpark in Los Angeles , California . On the mound for the team when they face off against the Angels will be Hyun Jin Ryu against the Joe Blanton in what should prove to be a very good pitchers’ duel . For GM Ned Colletti and team President Stan Kasten , the issues faced beyond the team’s bloated payroll and the under-achievement of the players , is that there now appears to be no leadership forthcoming from either Matt Kemp or Adrian Gonzalez , two of the team’s better offensive players and likely to be amongst the NL’s prime candidates for the NL MVP .

No lull before the storm but the NFL OTA’s (organized training activities) for a number of teams , have brought about a few odd spectacles for a number of franchises . Perhaps none more so , than for the Buffalo Bills , whose playoff drought in the league has been so lean , that the fans crave it , like the air they breathe . Head coach Doug Marrone and the front office had their turmoil during the off-season, but the big surprise came with the franchise’s choice to take a quarterback in the first round of this past NFL Draft . EJ Manuel was the player who had the privilege of being the franchise’s first draft pick , player , surprising a number of fans NFL analysts around the league environment . As a draftee taken out of Florida State where he had a moderately successful collegiate career .

Signs are , with Manuel along with veteran Kevin Kolb are likely to have something of an unsettling regular season , albeit , that it might still be too early assess how good or bad this team is likely to be . Marrone will certainly be looking to see of a journeyman such Kolb , still has anything to offer a franchise at this stage of his career . Kolb has suggested that he has joined the Buffalo Bills with a view to winning and to guide the young rookie quarterbacks on the team`s roster . Last I looked , Kevin Kolb`s resume` as a player , gave nothing by way of a suggestion , that he could or would be ever considered to be a winner ! The former Eagles and Cardinals` signal caller , if anything , can be best described, as a below to moderate backup quarterback in the NFL .

Inasmuch, as I love to watch energetic and competitive football , I truly believe that the AFC East will be determined this season will be determined by the play of the New England Patriots and how Bill Belichick sets about in the preparedness of his team . As the Patriots go , then so will the destination of the divisional title . With the Bills opening their regular season a> schedule with a game against the New England Patriots at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo , New York on the 8th September, 2013 , opening weekend of the NFL regular season schedule . If the game is anything like the previous meetings between these two teams , then the fans in attendance, will be definitely be in for something of a treat . Newly installed GM Doug Whaley , in his first draft , in a capacity as a general manager , sought not to make the type of mistakes that were often associated with a number of his predecessors . That being said , it might will be the off-season free agent acquisitions , that may well stir a great deal of debate as it relates to the Buffalo Bills .

I am not about to suggest that Bills draftees , EJ Manuel , Robert Woods , Kiko Alonso , Marquise Goodwin , Duke Williams , Jonathan Meeks , Dustin Hopkins and Chris Gragg will not be able to make solid contributions for the team this upcoming season . Yet considering , the Bills` lackluster performances in 2012. By comparison to the team`s draft class of last season , was less than superlative , by way of their contributions for Buffalo , in terms of their schedule and the franchise`s final divisional and conference standings overall .

I am sorry, but after the idiotic behavior we all witnessed that went viral concerning, the now former Rutgers University men`s basketball coach, Mike Rice . and the school’s former AD , Tim Pernetti , whose incompetency was only outdone , by his sheer and utter stupidity in not having fired Rice , with cause , rather than seeking to make Rice is own personal reclamation project , even when it was known that Mike Rice was a repeat offender . I felt that there could be no way in hell that things could have gotten worse for the once distinguished educational establishment . State ran, or not, the absolute incredulity shown by all involved within the university`s administration is a clear indication why greed , and stupidity , overtakes common sense and moral expediency within collegiate athletics . And please, do not look for to any sound reasoning or common sense to be shown by anyone within the NCAA hierarchy , Most definitely not while on NCAA President Mark Emmert`s watch . Emmert has enough skeletons in his own damn closet to make a corrupt member of the US Congress blush .

Julie Hermann remains under fire

By Andrea Adelson ,

Incoming Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann, already accused of abusive behavior toward student-athletes during her time as the women’s volleyball coach at Tennessee, is the focus of another lawsuit — this one during her time at Louisville in 2008.

According to a report in The New York Times, assistant track and field coach Mary Banker approached Hermann, who was then a senior athletics administrator at Louisville, about what she thought was sexist behavior and “discriminatory treatment” by head coach Ron Mann. After taking her concerns to human resources, Banker was fired within three weeks.

According to the legal filings obtained by The Times, Hermann initially was supportive of Banker after hearing of her complaints. In an email to Banker, Hermann wrote: “Thank you … We’re lucky to have you … You’re a change agent … don’t let their limitations take you out of the game … thank god you’re here.”

According to a filing, Hermann expressed concern after Banker went to HR with her complaints about Mann.

“Hermann called Banker into her office and flat-out told her, ‘You should not have gone to HR,’ ” the filing states, adding that Hermann allegedly told Banker: “I don’t know how I’m going to restore trust in you amongst staff now,” and “I don’t know how you’re going to work downstairs after this.”

On Monday, Rutgers president Robert Barchi gave a vote of confidence for Hermann, and supporters defended her as a strong leader and advocate for women after it came to light that Hermann had been sued by former Tennessee volleyball assistant coach Ginger Hineline in the 1990s. According to the suit, Hineline accused Hermann of discouraging her from getting pregnant. Hineline was awarded $150,000 in a settlement in 1997.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich told ESPN, “In 15½ years, I never had one problem” with Hermann. “She did impeccable work for us. No one has said anything the past 15 years. She is beloved here.”

Joan Cronan, Tennessee women’s AD emeritus, also voiced support for Hermann, claiming in a statement that she does not “recall it being an abusive situation.”

“I hold Julie Hermann in high regard, and I believe she is well-prepared for her new role at Rutgers University,” Cronan wrote in her statement, according to MyCentralJersey.com. “My recollection of the time Julie was at the University of Tennessee is that it was a very frustrating time for everyone connected with the volleyball program, which had performed far below our expectations. However, I do not recall it being an abusive situation.”

Rutgers University President Robert Barchi has used about as much expediency while this continued idiocy has taken a familiar course along the route of ineptitude . The school recently hired Julie Hermann to succeed Tim Pernetti . Yet only now, has it come to the fore after grave doubts had been presented about Hermann`s character , honesty and integrity . In choosing to make Julie Hermann the first female athletic director of a D1 school in the last fifteen years , now poses the question , how much due diligence was used by Barchi and his subordinates during the entire interview and hiring process ? Throughout much of Hermann`s career`s in collegiate athletics , either as a coach, or as an administrator , some form of controversy has continued to followed her . Now with allegations of sexual impropriety , allegations of misleading investigators in a legal issue , as well as issues concerning her own competency in her now chosen field as an administrator . One has to wonder , why Barchi and interim AD made the decision to hire Hermann . New Jersey governor , Chris Christie has now entered the fray with reservations in part questioning Robert Barchi`s choice of Julie Hermann to succeed Tim Pernetti . Christie , conscious of this latest problem , obviously, does not want to see the state ran university fall any deeper into a quagmire of its own making .

. The nation`s children are being sent to establishments of higher learning to first and foremost , obtain an education and learn how to be productive citizens. Unfortunately , it is the faculty members who now seem to be falling way sort of what the parents and public alike expect from our state ran and private universities .

  1. So let me get this straight Heat fans are not yet perturbed by what now seems to be several inconsistent displays in the conference finals` series against the Pacers ? I guess if Miami do bow out , then Knicks` fans will be crowing like hens . .

Inasmuch , as I like the Tigers and the play of Victor Martinez , Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera . I can`t help but wonder , will we see another meltdown from this team during the postseason , especially after last season`s indicator against the San Francisco Giants in the World Series ? The Detroit Tigers possess a great manager in Jim Leyland , who will be inducted in Cooperstown upon meeting the usual requirements .

Cabrera is knocking the hide off the ball and is ahead of schedule , in terms of last season`s accomplishments in obtaining a Triple Crown .

Don Mattingly is on the clock , and in reality , all it will now take for him to be relieved of managerial duties , is as a prolonged series of losses as has been the case for so much of the season for the Dodgers in 2013 . Simply look at the team`s mediocre play , which cannot be solely blamed on the fact that they ave some major stars on the DL .

“Robert don`t listen to the gossip , I do too love being involved in controversy , but I find it hard not to have sex with other females , while we share our vibrators . Rutgers AD Julie Hermann seen here with university President Robert Barchi .

Rutgers , another sorry educational establishment , . where incompetency seems to be the norm amongst the faculty and the athletics department . Robert Barchi , his antics, continued excuses , apportioning blame elsewhere , are so asinine and beyond belief . Due diligence cannot ave been used when Julie Hermann was hired to become school`s new athletics director. What a goddamn joke ! ow the ell can they (Rutgers) have ignored all of the evidence that was there for the school to merely delve more deeply into Hermann`s complete background , rather than being embarrassed once again after the Mike Rice fiasco and the pomposity of former AD Tim Pernetti .

  2. I actually like the Spurs, and have been a Tim Duncan fan since he was at Wake Forest. I think he’s under rated and doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves when compared to the likes of Kobe Bryant and Shaq. If Duncan can lead the Spurs to another championship, then there is no doubt in my mind that he will have surpassed Kobe as the best player between the two.

    1. I`ve been fan of the franchise from the time and the last two seasons of David Robinson and his handing over of the mantel to Tim Duncan . This team picked apart the Grizzlies like a vulture picking the dead carcass of its prey , and that is very ,much what the Memphis Grizzlies just happened to be , during this . conference final series . The Memphis Grizzlies became the Spurs` prey and they were devoured like a meal , for the San Antonio Spurs to feast on . Need I say anymore on the matter ?

Pump the brakes Heat fans , as you`re not off to the NBA Finals , yet . The Pacers embarrassed you again , when you had game four well within your grasp .

Your thoughts on the mess now brewing with Rutgers and the poor handling and hiring of Julie Hermann ? Could that establishment sink any lower with their continued absurdity and stupidity ? University President Robert Barchi is an ass ! As for New Jersey governor Chris Christie , apart from his overeating and being overweight , what the hell has he done that has been noticeable much less the idea of him being Presidential material ? The Republican Party much like the Democratic Party is devoid of intelligence and solutions to the ideas that would best benefit the country .

Christie comes out in support of Robert Barchi , even light of the allegations against Hermann and the fact that Louisville had to settle a case in court because of Julie Hermann`s actual stupidity . ow te ell can he back the university president in such an instance but yet shows outrage , yet he questions Barchi`s judgment and handling of the Mike Rice fiasco ? The New Jersey governor is indeed a moron !

Who do you believe will be the next managerial casualty within baseball this season ?

Popovich has an amazing record over the course of his career , and should h e and the Spurs make it five for five in Finals` appearances , then I would have to rank him above Pat Riley and second only . to Phil Jackson , as the best coaches ever to have coached in the NBA .

This hire at Rutgers only goes to show the stupidity that exists in collegiate athletics and academia , is perpetuated by those who believe that the NCAA and the colleges themselves have the best interests of the students at heart .

As for Chris Christie , governor of New Jersey , the guy is a hypocrite and a damn idiot ! Robert Barchi should ave been removed from is position as Rutgers president . But the idiots on their Board of Regents and Trustees , are far too stupid for their own good ! . That imbecile`s handling of the Mike Rice fiasco and then having agreed to the monetary settlement paid out (collectively $2.6 million) to Rice and then AD Tim Pernetti , shows not only how ludicrous that situation was said to be , but also , that there was no common sense to be found from anyone within the university`s hierarchy ! Rutgers University is a school for clowns and the faculty is clearly proof of that under Robert Barchi`s tenure !

The Bills` new free agent quarterback , Kevin Kolb is clearly delusional , if he thinks having joined the franchise , it will create the perception that both he and the team can be seen as winners , much less legitimate contenders within the AFC East or the AFC much less the league (NFL) , for that matter . Buffalo`s playoff drought in terms of their last playoff appearance (1999) , is damn embarrassing . Newly installed head coach Doug Marrone and this team will be in for tough time in terms of their schedule , never mind any playoff ambition or hopes that they might have .

All I know is that Alex Smith over the last two seasons has to be considered a vast improvement over both Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn as a quarterback .

And it will be doubtful that the Chiefs will be good enough to challenge the Broncos within the AFC West division this season .

Consider this , Rutgers spent over $70,000 on their “ alleged personnel search“ to hire Julie Hermann as the school`s AD , only to find out that she carried more baggage than her predecessor (Tim Pernetti) and the former basketball coach (Mike Rice) combined . Never mind the fact that a number of people questioned her being hired to begin with , because of her lack of true administrative experience .

What a damn waste of money and who were the idiots that Rutgers hired to conduct this search ?

I’m not a fan, just a speculator. Like yourself, I follow the Cosell credo…….”telling it like it is”.

Managerial changes? Bo Porter in essense is an interim manager. Ownership realizes the current version is ’62 Metish’. They have fruitfull minor league talent that will elevate this team in a few years. Agree Mattingly is history.

David Stern was actually hoping for at least a Heat vs Thunder NBA Finals` series . Zebo and the Grizzlies weren`t sent the script as to how things should have played out . Now we have the Spurs representing the Western Conference and in the East , odds-makers in Vegas are having conniptions , because all of a sudden the Heat look susceptible , vulnerable and ripe for the taking .

Who knew that Roy Hibbert would be playing like a man child this postseason ? He might now be the best center in the NBA and that is with respect to Dwight Howard and his lackluster game .

OSU prez jabs Notre Dame, Catholics

    COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)

The president of Ohio State University said Notre Dame was never invited to join the Big Ten conference because the university’s priests are not good partners, joking that “those damn Catholics” can’t be trusted, according to a recording of a meeting he attended late last year.

Gordon Gee also took shots at schools in the Southeastern Conference and the University of Louisville, according to the recording of the December meeting of the school’s Athletic Council that The Associated Press obtained under a public records request.

The university called the statements inappropriate and said Gee is undergoing a “remediation plan” because of the remarks.

Gee was on a long-planned family vacation and unavailable for comment, Ohio State spokeswoman Gayle Saunders said. He apologized in a statement released to the AP.

“The comments I made were just plain wrong, and in no way do they reflect what the university stands for,” he said in the statement. “They were a poor attempt at humor and entirely inappropriate. There is no excuse for this and I am deeply sorry.”

Gee, who has taken heat before for uncouth remarks, told members of the council that he negotiated with Notre Dame officials during his first term at Ohio State, which began more than two decades ago.

“The fathers are holy on Sunday, and they’re holy hell on the rest of the week,” Gee said to laughter at the Dec. 5 meeting attended by Athletic Director Gene Smith, several other athletic department members, professors and students.

“You just can’t trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday, and so, literally, I can say that,” said Gee, a Mormon.

The Big Ten had for years courted Notre Dame, but the school resisted as it sought to retain its independent status in college football. In September, the school announced that it would join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football and hockey but would play five football games each year against ACC teams.

In the recording, Gee referred specifically to dealing with the Rev. Ned Joyce, Notre Dame’s longtime executive vice president, who died in 2004.

“Father Joyce was one of those people who ran the university for many, many years,” Gee said.

Gee said the Atlantic Coast Conference added Notre Dame at a time when it was feeling vulnerable.

“Notre Dame wanted to have its cake and eat it, too,” Gee said, according to the recording and a copy of the meeting’s minutes.

Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown called the remarks regrettable, especially the reference to Joyce, “who served Notre Dame and collegiate athletics so well and for so long.” Gee contacted Notre Dame’s president, the Rev. John Jenkins, to offer an apology, which was accepted, Brown said Thursday in an email, declining to say when the apology was made.

On Tuesday afternoon, as politicians and major Rutgers donors were publicly criticizing the university for hiring Julie Hermann, an athletic director with a checkered history, the leaders of the search committee sent an e-mail to the group’s members assuring them that the process that led to Hermann’s hiring had been fair and transparent.

In e-mailed responses, however, at least two committee members claimed that the leaders had whitewashed a process that felt secretive and rushed, leaving them uncomfortable with the university’s selection of Hermann. One member said that concerns over a lawsuit an employee had filed against Hermann were not fully addressed, and that he did not spend enough time with her to feel comfortable that she was the right person to lead an athletic department still reeling from a scandal involving an abusive coach.

“At this time,” Ken Schmidt, one of the committee members, wrote to the group, “please do not try to rewrite the facts. I suspect you will find others that share my opinion.”

Another, Ron Garutti, wrote: “Please, let’s not present this as any kind of exemplary process. Subsequent events have proven otherwise.”

The e-mail exchange reflected growing frustration at Rutgers, even among those on the search committee, during a time of tumultuous change for the university. Last month, Rutgers gained national attention when a video showing the men’s basketball coach Mike Rice berating players in practice was broadcast, leading to his dismissal and the resignation of Tim Pernetti, the athletic director.

Hermann, a longtime Louisville senior athletics administrator, was hired May 15 to replace Pernetti. But in the weeks since her hiring, she and other Rutgers officials have defended her character against claims that she was verbally abusive toward volleyball players she coached at Tennessee in the 1990s. Rutgers has also faced questions about whether it properly vetted lawsuits in which Hermann played a role at Tennessee and Louisville.

In the Tennessee case, which resulted in a $150,000 jury verdict, Hermann was accused of discouraging an assistant volleyball coach from becoming pregnant.

In the Louisville lawsuit, Mary Banker, an assistant track and field coach, claimed she was fired as retaliation for complaining to Hermann and the university’s human resources department about sexual discrimination by the head coach. Lawyers for Louisville said that Banker was fired for under-performance, not in retaliation for her complaints.

A judgment in favor of Banker was overturned this year, and the case is pending before the Kentucky Supreme Court.

Banker, in an interview Wednesday night, questioned Rutgers’s decision to hire Hermann to clean up its athletics department. “She had the opportunity to clean up at Louisville, and she chose not to,” Banker said. “What she did was she covered herself and the rest of her coaching staff.”

Kate Sweeney and Dick Edwards, the leaders of the Rutgers search panel, wrote an e-mail Tuesday to the other committee members to defuse growing criticism of Hermann’s selection.

“You all had the opportunity to examine Julie’s credentials, to spend some time with her when she was on campus, and to provide us with your thoughts regarding her candidacy as Rutgers’s next Director of Intercollegiate Athletics,” they wrote.

Flawed hiring process at Rutgers ? What other frigging institution overlooks so many flaws in a person`s character , and still hires them ? Well other than Congress and those who have aspired to become POTUS (President of the United States) ?

Regent and the board members of Rutgers , must be filled with a bunch of idiots at the state ran university .

The university spent $70,000 with an executive search firm , who clearly used nothing by way of due diligence in putting together a list of candidates for the vacant athletic director`s position . Had they used any form of diligence then there is no way in hell that Julie Hermann would be among the final list of candidates .

  7. The Spurs are sitting pretty right now, Al, waiting for either the Heat or the Pacers to show up.

You know they’re hoping for a Pacer victory, that way they get home court advantage in the Finals but you have to imagine, most of America is hoping for Heat-San Anton.

Finally , it looks as if Bud Selig has awaken from his deep sleep and realized that , Alex Rodriguez , Ryan Braun , Melky Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta have been making a mockery of the sport and of the fans . All along, I have maintained , that the MLB hierarchy during the commissioner`s tenure has been one big joke !

Major suspensions appear to be in the offing for several top stars

not a moment too soon , considering the haphazard way that the league has gone about investigating this case , concerning South Florida based supplement firm Biogenesis .

MLB preparing suspensions for Alex Rodriguez Ryan Braun & others for Biogenesis link

    By Scooby Axson

Major League Baseball is preparing to suspend New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun and others connected to the Biogenesis clinic in South Florida, reports ESPN.com.

The report also states that as many as 20 other players will also be suspended because of their connection with the clinic. Biogenesis founder, Tony Bosch agreed to cooperate with investigators from MLB after months of trying to verify if the players received performance-enhancing drugs from Bosch. Investigators have had records for more than a month that named the players.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal have all received 50-game suspensions for failing PED tests and all had reported connections with Bosch.

Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Seattle Mariners minor league catcher Jesus Montero, and Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta are also being looked at for possible suspensions.

As far as Rodriguez and Braun are concerned, MLB is set to argue both players violated policy twice: once by dealing with Bosch, and another time for lying to MLB about their connection to Bosch’s clinic.

Until now, Bosch had denied any wrongdoing with PED distribution.
