It’s not always the journey , but the first step taken on the road to that destination

Six weeks into the NFL season and what we have all witnessed within the league , just happens to be an abundance of bad coaching , with some inexplicable explanations being offered up by the players and coaches alike for their continued mediocrity. Far be it for me to suggest, but I have never impressed by claims that there is said to be parity in the league (NFL) . It is my belief , that there are good teams, moderately good coaches , but an abundance of talent , where in large part , a number of these players are overpaid and not particularly skilled or adept, much less be able to show signs of leadership . Unfortunately, a large part of the fan-base that tend to follow the sports’ scene, they would to rather discuss rather the more mundane topics in the world of sports rather than succinctly debate a topic of discussion .

A recent visitor to my site made a comment that he could not have foreseen the impact made, where the Kansas City Chiefs would have started off the season at 6-0 , remain unbeaten and would now be challenging the Denver Broncos as the best team in the NFL. From my own perspective , I believe that the groundwork had already been laid , but the only things needed, were the right coaching staff , a good enough quarterback to helm the team , along with a front office , where the executives and coaches were all on the same page . Last season , none of the aforementioned criteria were in place , with Romeo Crennel as the head coach , along with his coaching staff and Matt Cassel as the team’s quarterback . The one saving grace for the franchise, might well have been , general manager John Dorsey , having replaced Scott Piolio , has seen fit to draft players who have been able to contribute immediately to the team , while acquiring players who were ready to play .

After the Chiefs’ clinical annihilation of the Oakland Raiders , the first of their two , now highly anticipated divisional match-ups against the Denver Broncos, are the games in question that the fans and the nation now awaits , with a great deal of excitement over the contests of note. Kansas will play host to the now troubled Houston Texans in week seven at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City , Missouri, a chance to push their record to 7-0 and giving the team their best start in franchise history, now seems all the more possible, given the frailties of the Texans at present on both sides of the ball. It must be said that for a number of teams, they are now simply playing for self-respect or in a number of cases, the livelihood of the respective head coaches in question. The more things are now beginning to unravel for the Oakland Raiders , it is my belief that Dennis Allen’s days with the once venerable are numbered, with GM Reggie McKenzie now seeking to make the head coach , the sixth incumbent to be fired from his position with the organization since 2005 .

College Football heads into its eighth week with the Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0) still riding high atop of the AP Poll , with the BCS rankings due to be announced later this month. Yet for some inexplicable reason , a number of analysts and outside observers or one might describe as antagonists, are now trying to suggest that Nick Saban’s team not deserving of being the top ranked team in the nation. Last I looked , Alabama remained unbeaten , albeit , that they have had a few scares along their schedule . In light of that however, their closest rivals in the rankings, the Oregon Ducks (6-0) in spite of their offensive prowess , have yet to show the nation that they are as equally adept on the defensive side of the ball . Granted, the Pac 12 has never been known as a conference where defense has been taught ,much less played to any degree , with the exception of perhaps one or two programs , most notably the Stanford Cardinals (5-1) . But in light of their recent slip up against the Utah Utes , defense , we can now surmise, is not now a prerequisite within the conference.

Alabama will play host to the Arkansas (Razorbacks) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa , Alabama , this Saturday , as the Tide seeks to keep their unbeaten record intact , while further strengthening their position atop of the rankings and within the SEC Western Division . A J McCarron and his teammates will seek to use this game as a reminder why this team is still seen as a prohibitive favorite to win their second consecutive national title, Saban’s fifth , and the program’s fourth in the past seven seasons .

Living in the state of Florida where College Football is treated with such reverence , the choices will abundant with regard to the programs , yet the only ones that seemingly matter , are the Florida Gators (4-2) , Florida State Seminoles (5-0) and the Miami Hurricanes (5-0) . Having lived and worked professionally in the southern part of the state before moving northwards on 2003 , the program of choice , merely by way my association with several alumni who were students at the University of Miami . I was able to frequent a number of basketball and football games as their guests and rallying to their support in such instances . Granted, as of late, the Canes’ program has been mired in controversy , while it still awaits some form of punishment for multiple violations of the NCAA rules on recruiting , alleged , academic fraud and what are said to current and former students gaining monetarily from gifts in violation of NCAA edicts . University President Donna Shalala and recently installed AD Blake James are still trying to remove the smear and lingering stains of the school’s association with the incarcerated felon Nevin Shapiro , whose statements led to the NCAA’s investigation of the athletics’ program by the NCAA’s Infraction Committee , as ordered by NCAA President Mark Emmert . That effort and investigation was mired with a great deal of incompetency, and it seems rather impulsive to believe how any reasonable verdict can be seen as just , in light of the ineptitude shown by collegiate athletics governing body .

With both Florida State (Seminoles) and Miami Hurricanes , riding on the crest of a wave, their SEC counterpart, the Florida Gators have found a way to simply throw a wrench into their season , with their recent loss to the LSU (Tigers) . That defeat has now left Wil Muschamp , his staff and the team asking why things have come apart when their intent was to be a major part of the SEC championship scene, if not the national championship landscape, itself ? Two losses , this season , and suddenly we have to question the direction Muschamp has the program heading in , and the quality of his recruits over the past two years . Florida now has the unenviable task of now having to go on the road to take on the Missouri (Tigers) this upcoming Saturday, in what can be best described as a make or break game for the team , this season . Another loss would further impact their year and all that they had hoped to achieve .

Al Golden and the Miami Hurricanes ,with a top twenty-five ranking nationally, are also sitting pretty within the ACC standings , and are seen as one of the like candidates for the conference championship , with an at large bid for a BCS Bowl game, if their schedule pans out, along the lines of an unbeaten season , if nothing else . The team itself has been on a tear and certainly their best result of the season so far , had to have been their dismantling of Florida . It certainly was a telling statement and laid the foundation for what has been an extraordinary year for several players on the team , but most notably for quarterback Stephen Morris , whose growing confidence and maturity process has been highlighted with his play this season . Add in a robust offense and a tenacious defense that appears to be very athletics , and one can understand the reason why Al Golden and his staff have to be pleased by what he has witnessed this season .

From heir-apparent to now head coach , Jimbo Fisher has now been given keys to the vehicle and he is now beginning to steer it on a course of his own design , and not one set out for him by predecessor Bobby Bowden , who over the latter part of his coaching career with the FSU Seminoles , may well have been caught asleep at the wheel. Bowden suggests, that he left the program under his own steam , but in reality , when faced with the option of being unceremoniously being fired , he sought to leave , in what can be best described as a polite dismissal , but accorded , all the trappings of a celebrated head coach leaving of his own free will . The octogenarian may well have built the program into a national powerhouse, but in the final years of his coaching the Seminoles , his teams were lackluster , uncompetitive and simply not winning .

Recruiting and coaching has been one of Fisher’s greatest attributes, and with his coaching staff in tow , he is now proving how good a coach he can really be, when the right talent is in place . An unbeaten start to the season , with their being rave reviews over Jameis Winston , a quarterback , who has not been afforded the same attention given to the likes of Tajh Boyd , Johnny Manziel , Teddy Bridgewater , Aaron Murray , Zach Mettenberger and A J McCarron. Perhaps , that is not such a bad thing after-all , if he remains off the national radar , while racking up the statistics and leading an unbeaten program back to national prominence . Winston , however , has not been able to achieve this all by himself , as it has been a collective team effort along the way. The Seminoles may not be laying waste to their opponents with the mindset of Oregon Ducks’ coach Mark Helfrich . Yet , as a fan of the college game, I would rather see the ‘noles in full flight rather than witnessing Ducks’ program, whose primary forte’ is simply either an aerial or ground assault , without their being a presence of the team actually being able to play any defense . While my thoughts may not be shared by many , we simply do not how good Oregon is meant to be , because they have yet to be tested over the course of their somewhat “soft schedule” . And for this, , they are rewarded with a number two ranking in the nation and in some cases, there are claimants that they should be seated atop of the AP Poll . I guess only time will tell, what is likely to happen !

On Saturday Florida State will have a prime-time nationally broadcast game against Tajh Boyd and the Clemson Tigers at Memorial Stadium , in Clemson , South Carolina , in a contest of two unbeaten teams , top twenty ranked and with likewise BCS national championship aspirations . The winner of this game, is still likely to have inside track of being a top five ranked team, once the dust has settled on the week eight schedule within College Football, while the loser is likely to drop outside the fifteen .

College Football with all of its , niceties , oddities , corruption , the biggest farce remains the naïveté of the BCS Committee and the major conferences that its present format of determining a national champion now requires a little tweaking . Well that is akin to the present administration , House of Representatives and the Senate reaching a bilateral agreement on the debt-ceiling as well as the fiscal waywardness of the Congress altogether . Needless to say, with idiots such as , Ted Cruz , Eric Cantor , Rand Paul , John Boehner , Paul Ryan , Marco Rubio , Harry Reid , Nancy Pelosi , Chaka Fattah , Max Baucus , Bill Nelson , and Charles Schumer as well this weak-willed President, Barack Obama have created such a cluster ##ck , that now the finger-pointing and name calling carries on unabated, without either side having a goddamn clue, as how best to proceed. The same can now be said of the premise, behind the new format to adjudge and determine how a new national champion will be decided along the lines of a playoff format . If the news being released by the BCS is to be believed , a panel of twelve to eighteen individuals will be seated to discuss the issues and then come to an agreement , to have a format in place with a seeding system, all in place for the 2014 season.

NEW YORK (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the process tells The Associated Press that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to be part of the selection committee that will pick the teams for the College Football Playoff next year.

The person also said a former Air Force Academy superintendent and a former NCAA executive who worked with the basketball tournament, are expected to be part of the new 12-to-18 member football panel.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the selection process is still ongoing.

The committee is expected to be comprised of current athletic directors and former college athletic administrators and coaches.

Last year, Rice and business executive Darla Moore became the first two female members of Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters.

GOOD FIT: Rice more than qualified for committee

The makeup of the College Football Playoff selection committee is expected to be set by the end of this season. Potential committee members have been asked to keep their involvement confidential until the announcement is made, but College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock and Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said the names wouldn’t be a surprise to many.

“You’ll know almost all of them,” Hancock said recently.

Although Hancock and several commissioners have taken to referring to the selection committee as “the most prestigious committee in sports,” its business – and its members – will also be the subject of intense scrutiny.

“If they’re gonna be scrutinized the way they’re gonna be scrutinized, we’ve got to be ultimately careful and do every bit of due diligence,” Delany said recently. “You can expect that media – new media, old media – when someone says, ‘Oh, that guy voted that way for that reason,’ they’re gonna be under a fine-tooth comb. We’ve got to make sure, for everybody’s sake, that we’ve done everything we need to do to understand that.”

Now while on paper, this all seems feasible, the nuances of this all , will be derived upon which individuals, are invited to be part of the process , provide their expertise and the experience that each will bring to the table. In the midst of this all, a public announcement was made that one of the committee members, will be none than former NSC member and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice . Her expertise on Soviet Bloc politics, while unquestioned , her scope on a great deal of international diplomacy, bordered on being inept , but it should be remembered that the Commander-in-Chief at the time her tenure, was none other than George W Bush , whose geographical , political , international diplomatic knowledge and business acumen could be written on the back of a first class stamp and sent to Timbuktu , for all of the use that it would do. Likewise, has to be the case, in naming Condoleezza Rice to be a part of this committee.

The BCS and the major conference commissioners, clearly lack intelligence if they believe that Rice adds legitimacy to the panel. Much like an idiot, once suggested to me that former Vice Admiral James Stockdale should be treated with reverence, because he was a war hero . At the time, our discussion took on the fact that Stockdale, whose war service record was impressive , his inclusion in the political arena was about as welcomed as a sexually transmitted disease . He simply was clueless on wide range of political subjects, including the country’s domestic and foreign policy, as well its economy . This came at a time, when Stockdale was asked to be the Vice Presidential running mate of then Reform Party candidate , Ross Perot , whose own rise to fame, had more to do with his connivance and being able to have the government to subsidize many of the corporate entities he would simply plunder, as a part of an asset stripping exercise. Yet, all of this was somehow overlooked by the individual, whose lips must have been at one time, firmly pressed on James Stockdale’s sphincter. Is this really the stupidity of the US electorate at work, or merely the ongoing apathy that has been the norm over the past three decades ?

The BCS Committee and the major college football conferences had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century , very much in a similar vein as Major League Baseball had to drag its dumb ass along the way and adopt what Bud Selig still believes to this day, baseball has the toughest drug testing policy in all of professional team sports. Unfortunately, baseball’s commissioner , has never been looked upon as being one of the most intelligent individuals , never mind , in all of professional sports . The same can now be said of individuals such as John Swofford and Mike Slive , whose imprints are all over the current and sad state of affairs as it relates to this whole process , never mind the fact that final arbiter here will not be the panelists themselves but the major broadcast outlets , who now more than ever before, will be the ones with the real power , because if any part of this format is not to their liking, does anyone truly believe that this whole premise will ever see the light of day and actually be adopted in whole or in part ? Chime in, with your thoughts on this and anything else you believe pertinent to the topic at hand .

Call me naïve but all of the hype over the teams at the start of the season doesn’t bear out the claims being made by the pundits and fans alike . BCS / College Football anointed USC (Trojans) the number one ranked team in the nation, only to see that program fall from grace faster than a speeding bullet shot up into the air , and with that projectile swiftly falling . The fact that Lane Kiffin tried to play down his team’s woes as being nothing more than complacency and inexperience , clearly indicates that the coach , himself , didn’t believe the “ bull “ he was readily extolling , as he tries to hide behind the disappointment of what might have been .

The Trojans were 7-5 in overall play and 5-4 within conference ( Pac 12) , in essence when you consider this team was highly-touted as the Pac 12 champions, as well as a bonafide contender for the BCS national title . Well the Trojans’ Bowl aspirations will be down to one of second-tiered Bowl games , and in this case , it will be the Hyundai , sponsored , Sun Bowl , in El Paso , Texas on the 31st December ,2012, when the USC (Trojans ) take on Georgia Tech (Yellow-jackets) . A nondescript game , with a $2 million payout for the winning program, on the day . And we wonder why the BCS in conjunction and the major conferences , have been so slow in dragging their feet and adopting a clear cut formatted playoff system that would be equitable for all? With these multi-million dollar payouts at thee bowl games , it’s better to “ keep the gravy train” rolling along as it is , rather than further having divide the spoils amongst many of the lesser programs who aspire to be playing amongst the big boys of the FBS . As Ohio State Buckeyes’ President , Dr E Gordon Gee once stated “ we’ve no need for programs who can’t play at a higher level and pay for the privilege of doing so “ . Need we be reminded of what was going on at the Buckeyes’ program between 2009 through to 2010, under then , head football coach , Jim Tressel ?

Let’s just say , the stench to be found on the college’s campus , could only be outdone by lies and deceit countenanced by Tressel , his coaching staff and numerous players with the football program at the time. Pay to play , pimp by ride , and I’ll one-up you with , I’ve got a bag a weed , a major drug dealer and gambler handling bets for the players , and a car dealer offering “free rides” (cars) for players to roll around in , with some of the finest ” bling-bling” and “honey dips” (females) available for sexual gratification. Yet somehow this all escaped the watchful eye of AD Gene Smith and the Athletics Department’s compliance officers ? Stevie Wonder could’ve detected that rancorous stench and told you , what , when , why and how ? Buckeyes’ Nation , more like, Fuck You Nation ! And if anyone believes that the installment of Urban Meyer , as the coach of the football program , will bring about a renewed search , for academic and athletic excellence , then , think again ! .

This past weekend within the NFL ,there were a number of results that may well have left you in sheer apoplexy . First off the bat , I will reiterate , there are no do-overs in the NFL , and the Arizona Cardinals cannot , and will not be allowed a second bite of the apple , after their 58-0 shellacking at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks . I am English , and results such as this, normally takes place during a rugby match and not , in an NFL game ! At what point was Cardinals’ head coach Ken Whisenhunt going to press his secondary into making a serious attempt at playing some defense ? Last , I looked , Russell Wilson was not the second coming of Joe Montana , and Marshawn Lynch could not be mistaken for Barry Sanders . Yet somehow, the performances of the Seahawks’ offensive players in this game were somewhat reminiscent of the Forty-Niners at their very best . But let’s take a step back , this is the Arizona Cardinals we are talking about, a franchise that hasn’t been relevant since Kurt Warner was leading them to regular season victories with a great deal of aplomb , before choosing to ride off into the sunset and into the arms of a loving family . Do you get the feeling that the Cardinals’ front office < might not now contemplate giving Warner a call , to gauge his interest in returning to the NFL ? It’s not as if Kevin Kolb , John Skelton and Ryan Lindley , have been able to do that much at the quarterback position for the Arizona Cardinals this season. The trio are amongst the worst performing players at the position within the NFC , and not far off being amongst the worst of a terrible bunch within the NFL as a whole !

I know it’s not Groundhog Day , but the frequency of the losses for the Kansas City Chiefs , have become repetitive and damn monotonous . In the aftermath of the Jovan Belcher “ tragedy” , a rallying cry was heard and a victory came out of an unnecessary tragedy . That being said, it’s back to the ineptitude we’ve seen exhibited with ever-growing frequency from a team that apparently has lost its will to win , and whose coaching staff now seems to be out of their depth.

Sunday afternoon , the Chiefs were the guests of the Cleveland Browns , in a game that would have significant meaning for the Browns , as they sought to keep within striking distance of the Cincinnati Bengals , and avoid ending the season , as bottom feeder within the AFC North . Brandon Weeden was not asked to do a great deal , other than to be efficient , and not put his team at risk during the game. Cleveland came away with a 30-7 victory , which improves their record to 5-8 , while dropping the hapless Kansas City Chiefs to a mediocre 2-11, with only three games left , in order to end their schedule and not further subject their fans to this misery.

For team that was said to have a great deal of of aspiration for the postseason , the Houston Texans have proven to as elusive as they are thrilling . Everything about this team at the start of the season , suggested that they were ready to “ hit the big time” . Well, take into account their first postseason berth , and their displays in 2011 , all that was being asked of Gary Kubiak’s players on Monday night , would be , that they go out, and acquit themselves well . Instead , the Texans ran into the New England Patriots and their buzz-saw offense that simply laid waste to an apathetic and woefully inept Texans’ secondary , that on the day looked lackluster and did in fact play lethargically . I’m not a heavy gambler , but it would be a cold day in hell , before you would be able to entice me to bet on the Houston Texans in any type of a meaningful wager ! This team and franchise has no “ real body work” behind it, other than a exceptionally explosive offense , that plays well during the regular season , but seems to come up short , when it matters most .

We are all aware of what Tom Brady has been able to do over the course of his career , especially during the regular season . Monday , was not necessarily the exception to the rule , but it damn well near came close to it , as the quarterback put on an exhilarating aerial display , that was complemented by a solid rushing game led by Stevan Ridley , Danny Woodhead , Shane Vereen ,and Brandon Bolden making the Patriots’ offense was relentless on the ground. And as much we have seen the defense of the AFC East franchise play poorly during this season , we were able to finally see a game from where all the parts seem to come together . A secondary that on average , this season, has been giving up 376 yards and 21.1 points per game through the first thirteen games of 2012. Given the fact that Patriots’ head coach, Bill Belichick and defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia , simply put together a scheme and sets that stymied the Texans’ offense from the beginning to the end of the four quarters . And to see Matt Schaub , perhaps in his worst game of 2012 , it was enough an indicator , to suggest the quarterback is just capable of putting up great numbers , and little else beyond that. Schaub , has yet to win a playoff game in his career , and this is where I believe far too many people have bought into the idiocy that this is the team to beat in the AFC . Well , Monday night , was a clear indication that the Texans are not as good as advertised , because fans only saw what they wanted to see , rather than what was clearly there to be seen

Now while it appears the final verdict has been rendered , with presiding adjudicator , Paul Tagliabue’s decision to overturn Roger Goodell’s original suspensions of Wil Smith , Scott Fujita , Anthony Hargrove and Jonathan Vilma . Tagliabue’s verdict does not excuse the player’s actions but he believes that the preponderance of evidence gathered shows the actions of the New Orleans Saints in this “ Bounty Scandal “ was in fact initiated by the actions of Sean Payton , Gregg Williams , Joe Vitt and countenanced by GM Micky Loomis . This remains a damning indictment of the NFL franchise but of anything , it also indicates that the commissioner far exceeded his authority .

Goodell, has always maintained his actions followed the “letter of the law”. But at no time has the commissioner acted accordingly in his deliberations and interviews with the alleged defendants when they met in private. Much , much to the dismay of the fans , the public and those amongst the legal establishment , the actions of Roger Goodell were not tempered by any sound judgment and the impartiality sought from someone who has to assess the evidence based on the facts as they are known to be . And no matter what concessions that were made by the NFLPA (Players’ Union) , as it relates to their collective bargaining agreement with the NFL hierarchy , at times the commissioner’s actions bordered upon being those of individual who simply sought to make a scapegoat of the players , rather than the Saints’ franchise as a whole . Paul Tagliabue may well be seen as a reprieve for the four players , but in no way it should it be viewed that way. They are guilty , it is just that their guilt is mitigated by overwhelming proof that without the direct orders of the coaches , much of what we now know to have taken place would not have been executed without the “ say so” and implicit orders of Micky Loomis , Sean Payton and the head coach’s subordinates , Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt. Which now begs the question , how is it that Roger Goodell could not have come to this conclusion and have rendered a decision that would have been amenable to all of the parties concerned , and wherein a monetary fine that could have, and should been levied against the four players , rather than the continued idiocy we have witnessed ? Tagliabue, upheld the commissioner’s original suspensions of Payton , Vitt , Loomis and Williams , without making any recommendations that any further action be taken . Should we now consider the matter closed ? Well , that would be dependent upon whether or you believe Paul Tagliabue’s decision to be fair and impartial . From my own perspective , even with the union’s original decision to challenge the former commissioner’s impartiality to preside over such a matter , we did in fact get to see how a legal mind does work, when you have someone with a legal background presiding over such a case .

Paul Tagliabue vacates all discipline for players in Saints bounty case

By Mark Maske , Washington Post

Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue on Tuesday overturned the suspensions of four current and former New Orleans Saints players and declined to fine them for their roles in the team’s alleged bounty scandal .

Tagliabue, appointed by Commissioner Roger Goodell to hear the players’ appeals, agreed that New Orleans conducted a program that paid players for hits that injured opponents, and that three Saints — linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive linemen Will Smith and Anthony Hargrove — were guilty of conduct detrimental to pro football.

But because “this entire case has been contaminated by the coaches and others in the Saints organization,” Tagliabue wrote that he would not impose fines either.

A fourth player, linebacker Scott Fujita, did not engage in conduct detrimental to the NFL, Tagliabue concluded in his 22-page decision.

“I affirm Commissioner Goodell’s factual findings as to the four players,” Tagliabue wrote in his 22-page ruling. “I conclude that Hargrove, Smith and Vilma — but not Fujita — engaged in ‘conduct detrimental to the integrity of, and public confidence in, the game of professional football.’

“I fully considered but ultimately rejected reducing the suspensions to fines of varying degrees for Hargrove, Smith and Vilma,” Tagliabue added.

None of the players has missed a game because of suspensions. They have been allowed to play while appeals are pending, though Fujita is on injured reserve and Hargrove is not with a team.

A league official called Tagliabue’s ruling the end of the process under the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and its players’ union.

Paul Tagliabue , whose legal background and experience as a corporate trial attorney and managing senior partner with law firm , Covington & Burling LLC , of which he was also a founding partner , gave him greater insight than any , that could have been found with his NFL successor , Roger Goodell. What this now further does in quite possibly lowering the public’s perception of the NFL , has to be tempered by one’s own opinion of Roger Goodell’s , as the hierarchy’s commissioner . There’s no denying that he has , and will continue to make decisions that far outreach the parameters of his responsibilities, and many of the verdicts rendered will be looked upon as being asinine in a number of cases , whereas in others, they will actually make some common sense . But in all honesty, in recent years, Roger Goodell’s decision-making has more to do with sheer buffoonery , rather than being sound in its reasoning ! He has been in large part, a simpleton on appearance , been someone who cannot be succinct or for that matter , and as an individual , his communicative skills border on that of someone, who has a considerably hard time of making sense of the English language, orally , as well as, in the written word ! .Your opinion on this ?

What thoughts if any , do you have with regard to the NFL season so far , and which teams do you now feel have more to worry about with regard to their ongoing precarious plight ? And is there any one ball club that you feel over the past three weeks has stood out as a legitimate contender for the Superbowl , above everyone else ? Also are you in agreement with this verdict rendered by Paul Tagliabue and do you see it as an end to this long episode concerning the New Orleans Saints and Roger Goodell ? Breaking news , or is it ?

So it took the Miami Marlins a woefully inept season and payroll north of $145 million to see that Ozzie Guillen wasn’t a good enough manager to take the ball-club to a World Series’ title. Hired to great plaudits and the expectations that with all of their postseason acquisitions of high-priced free agents, the feeling was that the Marlins would be serious contenders for not only the NL East title , but also the NL pennant. The manager left the Chicago White Sox under a cloud of controversy and with the accompaniment of a great deal of baggage.

Slideshow .

Marlins’ GM Michael Hill, Dave Sansom , Larry Beinfest , and team owner Jeffrey Loria , made this decision to jettison the often beleaguered and outspoken manager. Guillen’s insensitive, and some might say idiotic remarks concerning Cuban leader, Fidel Castro , once again indicated that controversy is never far behind this controversial baseball figure. With the firing of Ozzie Guillen , it will prove to be extremely difficult to gauge where the front office seek to go in search of a successor to Guillen. I do not believe that they will have immediate success filling this vacancy with a near certainty. Whoever happens to be the next manager of the ball-club will placed in the sixth manager to fill this position since 2008.

What cannot be denied is that this Marlins’ team was grossly mismanaged by Ozzie Guillen, and that is in spite of his alleged talent as a manager. Granted, he won a World Series’ title with the Chicago White Sox , in 2005, when the team defeated the Houston Astros , 4-0 , in a rather lopsided series. In the subsequent years beyond the controversies , and skepticism that followed Guillen , the feeling was , sooner , rather than later, his tenure as a manager with a franchise would be short-lived. All of this was for a team to finish with a 63-99 record and at the bottom of the NL East ? Damn , that is so pathetic !

From my own perspective with so much uncertainty surrounding this franchise , and the mere fact that Loria and his partners have come under a great deal of scrutiny concerning the financing of the Marlins Ballpark . This $575 million , 35,000 seat venue was built using the resources of the city of Miami via a bond issue, which places the residents on the hook should the city not be able to meet the financial obligations of this debt instrument. It has led to the US Justice Department to conduct an ongoing investigation into how this deal was arranged and whether or not there was any collusion on the part of MLB hierarchy along with the Marlins’ organization used coercion to force the municipality to finance the vast majority of this deal. Miami Mayor Tomas Regaldo, and specifically MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, have remained mute on this matter, choosing not to answer questions on the matter , referring the matter to their respective legal counsels. Do we really need to go down this road concerning the malfeasance that has gone on concerning the Marlins’ franchise and the very fact that Bud Selig chooses not to address such issues concerning so many teams around the league? There are so many anally retentive fans who try to suggest that the financial state of the game is better than it has ever been before . The commissioner points to baseball’s to the game’s increasing revenues but rarely does he choose to address the fact that just under than half of the league’s thirty teams breaks even by showing a healthy profit.

It should be noted that with Ozzie Guillen’s firing , he is still owed $7.5 million on the three years remaining of an original four-year $10 million contract. As to what this would suggest concerning the Marlins’ capricious spending not only on Guillen , but also the almost $215 million committed to the free agents signed this past off-season , and the fact that the organization finished with a sub .500 record is enough to indicate that not a great deal of financial expediency was original placed in their whole thought process as they chased after baseball excellence to begin with . But this is the Miami Marlins , an organization that is and has been bereft of intelligence and whose ownership group are amongst the most corrupt , egregious , gregarious of individuals , and owners within the game of baseball !

Not content with whining , it would appear that Cam Newton is now choosing to distance himself from the team’s failings this season . The Panthers are now 1-5, and have all but given up on their season , obviously to the disdain of the Carolina Panthers’ fans. Head coach , Ron Rivera , will be dealing with a multitude of issues beyond the ongoing immaturity being shown by the number one draft pick from the 2011 NFL Draft .

Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has been mentoring offering advice and words of wisdom to Cam Newton . Recently, in a candid interview , the NFL great, suggested that the criticism of the Panthers’ quarterback was somewhat unjustified, and in some cases, bordered on being racist. Is he kidding me ? If Cam Newton, cannot deal with adversity on the field , and then cowers the moment there just happens to be criticism of him off the field , and how he conducts himself , in terms of his demeanor and dealing with candid questions from the press . Then his stay in the NFL will be short-lived , as even the great players themselves have been leveled with a certain amount of criticism at one point during their careers. As for Moon, he is being disingenuous , rather than being constructive toward his protégé , in saying that the criticism is racially motivated . I mean is Rush Limbaugh now back offering his analysis of the “black quarterbacks” now playing in the NFL ?

Warren Moon , should take a step back, and review the events on the eve and immediately after the night that Hank Aaronbroke what was then the all-time home run record held by Babe Ruth. Aaron’s demeanor and class showed , as he was berated , had his and that of his family’s lives threatened , never-mind the racial epithets thrown in, by an intolerant bunch of racial bigots ! Moon now has the temerity to suggest, that criticism of Cam Newton’s play comes in part , because of his racial background ? How asinine and ridiculous is that ? If Newton and Moon are not willing to admit that the player is struggling this season, then he might as well cut short his career in the NFL . Cam Newton has become so accustomed to being coddled and told how great that he is , that he has begun to believe the all of the print written about him , and the fact that he felt that the leap from a college career to the pros of the NFL would not be that great. Perhaps , if Gene Chizik didn’t coddle the player as at Auburn , and instead teach him to be more of a productive individual on and off the field of play. The controversy that embroiled the program concerning whether not Newton , but specifically his father had received money from the school that would determine his son’s choice to further his collegiate athletic career. And though investigated by the NCAA , with no wrongdoing said to be found , questions still arose as to what may , or may not have transpired . To my mind, having the NCAA Infractions’ Committee investigate any issue concerning a program, is akin to having the Keystone Cops investigate a violent crime , only to find no evidence of wrongdoing !

Though in 2011, Newton had an excellent year, leading all rookie quarterbacks statistically in a number of statistically categories , those figures did not matriculate into anything by way of the Carolina Panthers’ standing in the NFC South or NFL as a whole . However, it was felt that the front office’s prudent justification of selecting the Auburn —- quarterback was a sound decision. Questions may still have been at the back of team owner , Jerry Richardson and then general manager, Marty Hurney’s mind , as to leadership qualities and maturity level of the player , as it had been noted that on several occasions he clashed with his college coach Gene Chizik. One should bear in mind also, that there was a giant shadow cast as to Newton’s eligibility status , and the actions of Cam Newton’s father in an “alleged play to play scandal” that embroiled Auburn University. Though investigated by the NCAA , it is unclear as to how in-depth the investigation was said to be , though there was no wrongdoing found on the part of the school, although a number of questions to this day, still remain unanswered concerning the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner’s status at the time.

There will be no respite for the Panthers’ franchise until they are able to turn things around. This will first have to start with the mindset of Cam Newton , and him holding himself accountable for his own mistakes both on and of the field as a professional. Failing to do so , only leads to continued problems for the franchise as well as an acrimonious environment with a divided locker room filled with disgruntled players. It will be incumbent also , upon Rivera and his coaching staff to deal with the matter firmly, rather than allowing the young quarterback to continue in such vain. Granted, winning , and winning consistently changes the environment . creating a conducive atmosphere where those issues then disappear altogether. For the Carolina Panthers as of late, victories have been hard to come by and therein lies the problem as a whole. It would appear that this team either does not know “how to win” , or has completely lost their “will to win”. Week eight should definitely tell us whether or not the Panthers are back on track, or of it will be more of the same when they clash with the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, Chicago , Illinois, this upcoming Sunday, in an NFC conference game. A loss at this stage of the season , and the franchise should genuinely think about beginning to rebuild for next season , and also look at the ‘ unproductive players who are superfluous to the Carolina Panthers’ needs.

A clash of the Titans , or will Saturday’s game between the Florida Gators and Georgia Bull Dogs , have more to do with the Gators finally cleansing themselves of the spirit of Urban Meyer ? A year or more removed from the former head coach’s abrupt and untimely departure , Wil Muschamp’s team remains unbeaten (7-0) , ranked number two in the BCS rankings , and they have inside track to the SEC East Division as well as a championship berth in the SEC title game. That will certainly add that “sweet taste” of success to the Florida Gators for this season , but yet , I do feel that Muschamp’s aspirations go far beyond an SEC title , as a BCS Championship Bowl berth has to be at the back of his mind. Defeating the Bulldogs and then quite possibly facing number one ranked Alabama or LSU (Tigers) in that conference title game would surely propel the Gators into national prominence , and a berth in that national championship game. Well, that would be unless the idiots behind the BCS , AP Poll and the computer tech geeks have an aneurysm in having trouble in deciphering what is patently obvious , while it stares right back at them ! We can opine playing the games, but yet , there can be no concrete decision made as to a proper and equitable format to decide a national championship for College Football at the D1 level. How asinine is that situation ? This from a country that was the first to place a man on the moon ? That explains it all , does it not ? Man on the moon , but we can’t figure out how the fuck to have a consensus of opinions on having a national champion in college football !

Heisman Trophy talk, well it narrowly beats talking about the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates , or does it ? Forget Obama and Romney ! Whoever ascends to the White House , in November, will bring about or carry on with policies , that will still cripple the country , as neither of the Presidential candidates are as insightful as they would have us believe . Braxton Miller , Colin Klein , Manti Te’o , Kenjon Barner , A J McCarron , De’Anthony Thomas , and Johnny Manziel , are but a few of the names being tossed around for this year’s top individual collegiate award ,as the best player in the nation. Last season, Andrew Luck was the undoubted favorite to win it all, but down the stretch , he and the Stanford Cardinals faltered , while Baylor’s Robert Griffin III , simply stole the show, and with it , came the Heisman . Now it goes without saying, that both Luck and Griffin as the top two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft are having exceptional seasons . Now both of these highly sought after quarterbacks are leading their respective teams to moderate success at this point of the season . It seems strange somehow that a player who has led his team to a 7-0 start in this collegiate season , is barely given a mention amongst the players seen as contenders for the Heisman Trophy. Florida’s Jeff Driskell is having a moderately successful season , but it would appear because his statistics are not into the stratosphere , it would appear he is not worthy of a mention among the top candidates for this year’s trophy. Make of it what you will, but at the end of the day , does winning the Heisman still carry that luster and real appeal. It may well add weight in terms of commercial value and the fact that a player’s agent can then obtain a healthy contract for their client , if they just happen to be the top pick in the NFL Draft. Beyond that the award while renowned is simply an accolade rest on a mantelpiece as a reminder to friends and associates. .

Raising the specter of ridicule, as always over the past eighteen months, has been Roger Goodell’s handling of the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal. As this whole episode becomes even more protracted and asinine , so too are the decisions being rendered by the league hierarchy led by the commissioner, himself. Now comes word that with Goodell recusing himself from hearing the suspended players’ appeal , he has appointed his predecessor , Paul Tagliabue to preside over those very same hearings. I have always maintained that Roger Goodell is a pompous ass , whose intelligence is barely above the requirements seen as normal . How in God’s name, does the commissioner believe that having Tagliabue preside over these hearings provide impartiality, integrity and legitimacy to a process that has been flawed from the very start ? The four players still at the center of this all, Jonathan Vilma , Scott Fujita , Will Smith and Anthony Hargrove , whose interests are being represented by legal counsel provided by the NFLPA (players’ union) are now intent on challenging Paul Tagliabue’s authority to preside over the hearings to decide whether or not their suspensions should be reinstated . Far be it for me to suggest , but if a multibillion dollar enterprise (NFL) does not have the common sense to hire a retired Federal Court judge to provide the transparency and credibility sought in this matter , then it shows how out of touch with reality the NFL has become ! This institution (NFL) has become as corrupt as a Medellin drug cartel , with its secrecy and complete lack of transparency. Yet , all we ever tend to hear from these asinine self-absorbed on air analysts , are stats , the league is making money , cause for fantasy geeks to have an orgasmic sensation , and whether or not Tim Tebow can add competitiveness and a competitive streak to the New York Jets . Well we do know the answer to the latter , don’t we ? The NFL needs to get a clue , as too, the players’ union (NFLPA) , rather than continue act as if their members are above reproach , which , they are not !

With the departure of Mike Holmgren from the Cleveland Browns , and the ongoing issues with the team . It is hard to envisage what direction the franchise will now take , and that is even with Joe Banner , succeeding Holmgren as the de-facto general manager and team President . Brandon Weeden’s first season in the NFL is proving to be something of a learning curve for the player and the team’s head coach Pat Shumur and his coaching staff. Weeden has in effect supplanted Colt McCoy as the team’s incumbent starting quarterback . The Browns are now 1-6 within the NFC North and they sit at the bottom of the division , and they have one win, in their last six games . The team this weekend will play host to the San Diego Chargers at Browns Stadium , in Cleveland , Ohio . A win for the Browns is of the utmost urgency for the franchise if they are to have any semblance of a respectable season . One of the few bright spots for the Browns over the course of this year has been the play of team’s running back Trent Richardson . Chances are , the Browns’ season will be one filled with more heartache than sheer joy , but here’s hoping that the sorrow will not be too much for the fans to endure .

Newton has under a great deal of criticism for his poor play . However, it has been the recent statements attributed to Moon , that have been cause for concern. Warren Moon has stated , that much of the criticism of the young player has been ” racially motivated “ , rather than being simply about Newton’s apparent poor play this season . It now begs the question , is Moon being over protective of the player , or is it really a matter of Newton the maturity , mindset leadership ability to play alongside his teammates in the NFL ? The College Football season (D1) is already in full swing and the wherewithal of the teams as they pad their schedules in order to proceed up the rankings . Never let it be said that the NCAA in conjunction with the BCS doesn’t know a good thing when they see fit .College Football has exploded into a multibillion dollar industry that can simply exist by itself. However, the corporate executives on Park Avenue and further afield know that a tie-in with the NCAA , BCS or in fact a wildly successful college program can do them no harm . There are a multitude of sins come hand in hand with such an arrangement, that can lead to the gross violations and surreptitious behavior, that we have witnessed in recent years. And it has been the failure of the NCAA, as well as athletic directors and compliance officers at these schools that has led us to where we are today.

NCAA President Mark Emmett and the body he presides over are toothless body, whose powers are rarely exhibited as warranted. OK, so a great deal will be made of the punishment handed down to Penn State but let’s face it, were it not for the public outrage and a certain amount of the empathy , the football program at the university would have been given the death knell . Not quite cast out in exile , it may well be several years before football at the Penn State can once again be looked upon with any reverence. Bill O’Brien has an unenviable task ahead of him , beyond succeeding the late Joe Paterno , as he also has to reinvent the sullied image and tarnished reputation of this once proud program. I firmly believe that he will succeed but that success will come along with detractors who are averse to change.

The acting AD David M. Joyner has been quick to show his support for the new head coach and his revamped coaching staff and that faith now seems to paying dividends . Beaver Stadium at College Park in Pennsylvania seems to have been revived with the fans now throwing their full support behind the Nittany Lion players . The team is off to a 1-2 start with their next scheduled game to be played this upcoming Saturday when they take on Temple (Owls) University at University Park, Pennsylvania . This game should give us a guide as to the progress being made by team and where they may well stand amongst their competitors within the Big Ten standings .

Matt McGloin is clearly being asked to lead and provide with the prerequisite leadership sought, as the program and the team undergoes a new chapter in its history. And the best way possible is for Penn State to win and at the same time show the pride and demeanor that clearly wasn’t present under Joe Paterno, as he and his coaches led the program into some unfathomable depths of despair while trying to gloss over the egregious and heinous actions > of Jerry Sandusky , most notably Gary Spanier and Tim Curley. It is extremely hard to fathom how both Curley and Spanier could be so nondescript and lackadaisical in their handling of the sordid affair that dragged down Penn State. The Freeh Report has done little to alleviate to the pain caused by all of the parties involved in this sordid episode , other than to suggest that there was no leadership or moral decency to be found from anyone in a position of authority. Such, are the vagaries and the Machiavellian maneuvers deemed necessary to pursue a cover-up.

Be honest here , hands up if you were ready to ride on the USC (Trojans) bandwagon because Lane Kiffin was selling you the fact that this team was ready to become a “world beater” ? Don’t be shy, man up, and show yourself. There is nothing more humbling, that a large dose of reality and being solidly kicked in the ass as well as by a nemesis who brings you back down to earth. Kiffin and his self-absorbed demeanor, were rendered less reverential in light of the Trojans’ 21-14 loss to Stanford (Cardinals) . And in one fail swoop, the chances of USC being a prominent factor in the BCS national title picture , resembles the chances of Donald Trump becoming a Democrat! And with that loss we may well seen the hopes of Matt Barkley dashed , as the presumptive favorite for the Heisman Trophy . The Trojans’ quarterback will have to play at an at exceptionally high level over the remainder of the team’s schedule if he is to have a remote chance of being an award winner , thereby adding to the Trojans’ legacy of producing Heisman Trophy winners .

Lane Kiffin’s career has been marred by a great deal of controversy and his departure from Tennessee (Volunteers) to become the head coach at USC after the departure of Pete Carroll, to return to the NFL . Kiffin’s abrupt and rather surreptitious move left a rather unsavory taste amongst the hierarchy at Tennessee, and certainly among the majority of Volunteers’ fans. The coach’s disposition for flouting the NCAA rules and then responding that he was unaware that there has been any transgression , shows Lane Kiffin not only to be somewhat economical with the truth but also a conceited son of a bitch ! How else would one describe the fact that on repeated occasions since his ascent to his current position , he has seen fit to endanger a program that has only just returned from sanctions imposed on it by the NCAA , while his predecessor and then AD Mike Garrett simply looked the other way, as the surreptitious behavior of several Trojans’ football players went unreported. As we all know former USC tailback Reggie Bush rather than face further embarrassment returned his Heisman Trophy —- (2005) after all of the furor of his career with USC and the alleged payments received by the player . A house was furnished to his family, which has since has been proven that the player profited from that gift. Something that Bush to this day, still denies any wrongdoing on his part, while only having offered a less than contrite apology for what he says were simply errors in judgment while at attending USC on a full scholarship.

The Trojans’ program is one of the most profitable and revenue driven programs in College Football, ranking in the top ten of all of D1 football. And though thePAC 12 is seen as the epicenter for college football in the West , in no way should it be deemed that the teams can be overlooked as non-contenders for the national title. Stanford, Arizona (Wildcats) , Arizona State , Oregon (Ducks) , Oregon State , California (Bears) and UCLA (Bruins), can be viewed as omnipresent forces within the conference.

Kiffin has been blessed with a talented team led by Heisman Trophy hopeful, Matt Barkley , T J McDonald, Silas Redd and slew of NFL hopefuls, who for the present will look to impress the NFL scouts while parlaying their college careers into something more tangible. The conference games will be also a telling mark as to whether or not the Trojans are a national championship-caliber team. From my own perspective I believe that USC , if they are to prove themselves worthy , they will have to win out , and simply win the PAC 12 championship game convincingly , in order to convince the BCS Committee of their worthiness as a national champion contender ! Having lost so early in the season isn’t necessarily such a bad thing but the manner of the loss and the opponent in question, certainly has hindered Lane Kiffin’s chances raising the national championship trophy.

If Lane Kiffin is said to be conceited, then Alabama’s head football coach, Nick Saban has to be looked upon as a conniving and disingenuous bastard! He has been known to be condescending, most definitely a liar, and if nothing else, someone who has willingly courted controversy solely for the sake of placing his himself for scrutiny within the public arena. There is no denying that as a college coach he has known considerable success having won three national titles over the course of his career but it has been his cold and calculating approach that has times alienated him with the press while he is beloved by the program’s fans in the state of Alabama. Last season , Saban brought the Tide program another national title, with their thoroughly lopsided victory over SEC rivals LSU (Tigers) —– 21-0 in the BCS national title game. That loss left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Tigers’ players and left Les Smiles smarting and somewhat dismayed in the way his team lost the game , having gone in as the decided favorites , due to an earlier regular season conference victory over Alabama in 2011.

In 2012, these two teams may well be clashing once again for the SEC championship title that might be seen as a precursor to another potential national title rematch. However, it is my belief that there may well be another SEC aspirants with something to say about that whole premise ! Florida , under second year coach Will Muschamp has his team playing with a great deal of zeal , with an improving defense and an offense , that is slowly finding a rhythm that will indeed serve them well, as they proceed over the course of their schedule. Will Muschamp has recruited vigorously, trying to avail himself of best talent available in order to make the Gators a competitive force once again. The program had fallen on hard times, since the departure of Tim Tebow in 2010, for the NFL . With Tebow’s departure , then came Urban Meyer’s abrupt and sudden resignation, subsequent retirement, un-retirement and then return to the program , only to then leave once again. Now, with Meyer having returned to the college game, where he now coaches the Ohio State Buckeyes. A betrayal that is not lost on the vast majority of Gators’ fans across the country who still feel aggrieved by Meyer’s actions.

Florida, is off to a 3-0 start with decisive victories over Bowling Green State, Texas A&M and Tennessee (Volunteers ). Next up for Muschamp’s players will be a 22nd September match-up against SEC rivals Kentucky (Wildcats) at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium , in Jacksonville , Florida. It will be here that we should get to see whether or not, Jeff Driskell, Trey Burton , Mike Gillislee , Solomon Patterson , Josh Evans , and Jonathan Bostic are as good as advertised.

Things are genuinely great, when all three prominent Florida college football programs are riding high. The Gators are 3-0, as are Florida State (3-0 and the Miami Hurricanes (2-1) . Albeit, that the latter two programs are part of the ACC , it should be misconstrued that football isn’t part of the glamor of a conference primarily known for their renowned basketball programs . Jimbo Fisher has a top ten ranked team with ambitions on a national scale. And no doubt the Seminoles’ head coach would like to prove the naysayers wrong with a run to BCS Bowl prominence , with the ultimate goal , being a participant in the BCS title game. The results garnered by FSU through three games , are pretty impressive , and gives credence to the fact that Jimbo Fisher and his coaching staff has this team playing with a great deal of guile . And a highly anticipated game against the Clemson (Tigers) this weekend should give the home fans a great deal to cheer about , when the two programs meet at Doak Campbell Stadium , in Tallahassee ,in Florida ,.

Miami’s off-season woes have been well chronicled concerning the mismanagement and non-compliance of the athletics department with NCAA mandates , concerning personal gifts offered to student athletes . School AD, Shawn Eichorst and university President Donna Shalala have simply buried their heads in the sand, while this sorry episode engulfed the program. What might be even more inconceivable is that head football coach Al Golden could have been conduit for much of the actions that went on , unreported , with an intermediary of the coach, acting as a go-between for the players and the now disgraced and federally incarcerated former Canes’ booster Nevin Shapiro. And Shapiro has been naming names , embroiling current and former players to whom he paid hundreds , if not thousands of dollars , plied them with substantial gifts beyond what anyone could have deemed possible. Now as the school tries to distance itself from those issues , Al Golden still retains his position as the head coach. Miami did themselves no favors with their embarrassing 52-13 loss to Kansas State on the 8th September , before rebounding back to beat Bethune Cookman ….. 38-10 . Miami’s next meeting, has them tangling with fellow ACC rivals , Georgia Tech in a game that is sure to competitive, as it will be mean-spirited between these two high-profiled programs.

College Football is fraught with danger , not necessarily with regard to the endangerment of the players on the field . More so, it has to do with the corruption of the sport and the bear facts, that the major conferences within the game are simply driven by greed , power and the growing need to garner as much money as they can , while carrying on their business activities with wanton disregard of morals or ethics. The idiocy remains that so many fans are buying into this bullshit , while trying to suggest that this is simply the best way for the game to proceed. Clearly , there is not enough intelligence to go around , and it would appear that being apathetic is the choice that is preferably taken by many rather than seeing the NCAA , BCS and conference presidents act responsibly. Not to be left out of this all, are the well compensated coaches who simply are happy with their lot, no matter what idiotic changes are proposed.

Well in the aftermath of Oklahoma State’s loss to Iowa State 37-31 in double overtime the list of the un-beaten teams within college football is now down to one with the LSU Tigers atop of the BCS standings as the nation’s only program without a loss. Now in the midst of this mess , claimants as to whom may well feel they have the privilege to meet Les Miles’ team in a potential national title matchup will be looked upon with a great deal of intrigue . The BCS standings and its main supporters are going to be in one hell of a time trying to make some sense of this all. Oklahoma (Sooners) , Alabama (Crimson Tide) , Oregon (Ducks) and Arkansas (Razorbacks) are amongst those looking to lay claim as to the willing aspirants for the national title game .

It is hard to envisage how things will all pan out but it is becoming clear with each passing season the proposers of a playoff format are gaining more support when such a scenario arises within college football. A one or quite possibly two loss team makes its way to the BCS title game while in all likelihood a program perhaps deemed more worthy remains on the outside looking in . One should remember that the premise behind the BCS system is one where the main teams eligible for the national title are usually from each of the BCS eligible conferences. The Pac 12 , Big 12 , Big East , ACC , SEC will be looking to see at least one of their programs be there when it matters most. From my own standpoint I simply find the present format in its present guise one that is literally filled with pitfalls but if anything it is one that is so corrupt in its guise that it really has no credence . But for the moment it is the best that the BCS conferences will offer the fans in spite of the growing opposition by its detractors.

Week 12 in College Football was actually crazy in so many way as was borne out in the results . Who could have guessed that 5 top ten teams would meet their demise against their opponents further muddying the waters on the collegiate football landscape. Truth be known these are the type of results that tends to make the game all the more appealing and exciting amongst the collegiate football fan . As of now it will be interesting to see how things now take flight . It all creates that so called impacted excitement we are told that tends to be missing from the BCS format but it simply does nothing but justify what many have felt all along ……….. a playoff format to debunk this continued idiocy that what was in place actually works ! The adage ” that if it is not broken then it doesn’t need fixing “ …………. what could now be more appropriate than simply adopting a scenario that would be far more equitable than what is in place at present ? In reality the conference commissioners of the major programs within the BCS would rather keep the status quo as is , with the coffers of the programs being laden to the tune of tens of millions of dollars each year . Sooner or later this corrupt system will be its own undoing and necessitate the federal government actually intervening .

The Chicago Cubs have decided upon Dale Sveum as the succesor to Mike Quade and in doing so the newly installed manager along with GM Jed Hoyer and President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein will now go about assessing the team’s roster . Granted , no one expects the fortunes of the Chicago Cubs to change overnight . And it is clear Cubs’ owner Tom Ricketts has no desire to see this organization continue to languish in the dumps. This past season the team offered little by the way of competitiveness within the NL Central and it is clear that the fans in attendance at Wrigley Field in Chicago can no longer tolerate the ineptitude of this organization.

Given the largesse of Jim Hendry as Epstein’s predecessor we simply saw the then general manager lavish exorbitant amounts of money on a number of players who simply underachieved this past season . Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez are two of the roster members who come to mind , and the duo between them were paid in excess of $35 million combined to simply offer this team absolutely nothing by way of offensive productivity . And from a pitching standpoint it is not as if the Cubs had a rotation that one would deem amongst the best within the NL .

With the off season now in full swing general managers , team owners and of course a number of prominent sports’ agents will be looking to see their clients signed by a prospective team . Two of the most high profiled unrestricted free agents on the market are Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols . At this juncture I am sure that Epstein and Hoyer are considering their options as to the legitimacy of signing either Fielder or Pujols to a long term contract that essentially makes either amongst the highest paid players in the game.

The Chicago Cubs with their impending free agents are likely to shed several players superfluous to their needs before they make any potential move before vying for one of the premiere free agents on the market . If anything it could very well be a work in progress for the Cubs as they embark upon the upcoming season . If anything I certainly don’t envisage the team vying for the divisional title or wildcard berth next year and that is even with the proposed changes with regard to the playoff format soon to be adopted by the league hierarchy having been approved by the board of governors , owners and union . This may well add to the intrigue and the desire sought by Bud Selig and his subordinates. The fans may well buy into it all but just because you dress a pig up as a sow and put a pretty bow on it doesn’t make it a sow and this is simply what MLB is trying to impress upon the baseball fan.

The New England Patriots (6-3) play hosts to the Kansas City Chiefs (2-7) on Monday night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro’ , Massachusetts . For Bill Belichick and this team their hold on the division (AFC East) will be strengthened should they defeat Todd Haley’s Chiefs team in what ought to be a highly anticipated game .

Now while both teams have had their struggles this season it has to be said that the inconsistency of both teams the situation is likely to arise where the fans could be treated to something of a sub par product . In reality however , we are much more likely to see the Patriots stamp their authority on this game and simply waylay the Kansas City Chiefs . Granted , Dwayne Bowe and his teammates will be looking to take down their conference foes but I feel that Tyler Palko is likely to struggle under this intense scrutiny while he looks to lead the Chiefs in seeking out their third victory of the season.

As an avid fan of the New England Patriots I would like nothing better than to see these players put together a string of games where there’s some semblance of consistency from this team . Tom Brady for all of his exploits this season and that of his fellow quarterbacks within the NFL the three time Superbowl winning quarterback has had his issues this season.

Wes Welker this season has been performing at a very high caliber and he simply looks to rewrite the record books for this franchise . To my mind the player’s acquisition by the team having been cast aside by the Miami Dolphins is perhaps the best move made by Belichick , since he saw fit to have Tom Brady enter a game after an injury sustained by then starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe ….. and the rest as they say ….” is history ” .

There is no denying that there have been several horrendous games this season but if anything this was to be expected . The NFL lockout in large essentially made a mess a preseason while the NFLPA and league hierarchy acting like petulant children squabbling over a toy. And now that both sides are said to be back on track the league is now once again ready amp and hype their brand both on and off the field of play. Nothing wrong there if you tend to buy into what both Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith are selling ?

While there now seems to be peace within the NFL , consider the actual hypocrisy of the union and in particular DeMaurice Smith ! Having agreed in principle to a collective bargaining agreement that guarantees a decade of peace within the NFL we have the union reneging on the issue of game day testing of the players for HGH . Now the league hierarchy and union are now having to appease the government and in particular House Gov’t Reform & Oversight Committee . At some point the league and in particular Roger Goodell will have to prove that he possesses a pair of “cojones “ rather than running around like an eight octave eunuch .

When it’s all said and done the off-season within baseball will see a number of moves that will either bring a smile to the face of the most discerning fan or simply prove to be mystifying . As to the NFL the regular season has proven to be something of a real surprise perhaps nowhere more so than with the inexplicable fall of the Indianapolis Colts . Could they very well become the second NFL franchise post a 0-16 season since the Detroit Lions managed the same feat in 2008 ?

The 2012 NFL Draft could very well tell us what we might already know and that is Andrew Luck is about to make himself a truck load of money and at the same quite possible serve a well deserved apprenticeship under Peyton Manning . And though the four time regular season MVP’s career is not yet necessarily on the decline one has to admit with the now lingering and recurring injuries sustained by the player we might just be witnessing the passing of the torch .

Is it me but why the hell is it that Mike Florio of NBCSports believes that Brett Favre would have been a better option as the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans than backup Matt Leinart ? The Heisman Trophy winner will be the team’s starter with Matt Schaub having been lost the Texans for the season . Has it not occurred to Florio , that Favre left the game with his tail between his legs ? But then again , I can only surmise that Florio’s lips have been pressed firmly and will continue to be firmly pressed against Favre’s anus in order to lick whatever fecal excrement emanates from that particular orifice ! The NFL needs Favre’s return in a vein that most heterosexual males would relish seeing Rosie O’Donnell ” naked” …….. suffice to say I don’t want that ! And neither do I wish to see Brett Favre’s return to the NFL , not now and not at any time in the foreseeable future !

Florio may well be a very good NFL analyst but he simply ought to be informative rather than coming across as a moronic asshole ! The fans want to be informed , not be force fed the opinions of a so called informed NFL analyst whose insights are about as welcoming as being poked in the eye with a red hot poker iron . .

Don’t Hate Appreciate ………… Have You Had Your Can Of Whup Ass Today ?

I’ve said it repeatedly the tough teams know how to win when it matters most and case in point was proof positive of that as the Los Angeles Lakers simply gave up in their quest having succumbed to the Dallas Mavericks 98-92 in a decisive game three played at the American Airlines Center in Dallas , Texas. Instead of being composed we saw a Lakers’ team pressed and playing rather in consistently throughout this series .

If there was an unsung hero during this game for the Mavericks then it had to be jointly Jason Terry , Peja Stojakovic and that wily veteran Jason Kidd who belied their years in the league. Now pardon me for saying this but each time I hear TNT or ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy I simply want to throw up ! Is there no time wherein this guy can simply be observant report on what he observes rather than coming up with asinine comments and analysis. Now down 0-3 this series is now beyond the reach of the Lakers as no team in playoff history has ever come back from an 0-3 deficit to come back and win that series .

This was simply a collective effort from this Mavericks’ team and it was a thoroughly convincing result and this series now seems to the Dallas Mavericks’ for the taking . If you’ve any doubt about that then simply look at the box-score and the stats for the Mavericks ? Game four of this series resumes on Sunday and we’re liable to see the Lakers be swept out of this series as the Dallas Mavericks make their way to the Western Conference Finals . Personally I can see the Lakers quite possibly taking game four but beyond that this team is liable to lose one if not two of the next three to be played at the Staples Center after the series’ departure from Dallas .

Anyone who was in any doubt why Derrick Rose became the youngest league MVP in NBA history then you simply had to witness his display against the Atlanta Hawks in game three played at the Philips Arena in Atlanta , Georgia . The Chicago Bulls simply laid the wood to the Hawks as they took them behind the woodshed and literally beat the shit out of this Hawks’ team . Forty four points simply sums up this player’s play and the fact that the Bulls’ bench took up some of the slack . Joakim Noah , Kyle Korver and Taj Gibson played with a great deal of aplomb as and when needed, as they harried the Hawks’ offense and made them look lethargic .

By midway through the fourth quarter this game was simply beyond the Atlanta Hawks’ reach and their two All Stars on this team in Joe Johnson and Al Horford simply couldn’t do anything to bring the Hawks back into this game. On this series resumption with game four we could well see the Chicago Bulls take a 3-1 lead in this series .

Can someone explain to me how it is that Cliff Lee can strike out 15 batters in a game and still come up with a loss (5-0 ) in a game played at Citizens Ballpark in Philadelphia as the Philadelphia Phillies took on the Atlanta Braves ? Lee’s opposite number Derek Lowe also had the prospect obtaining a no hitter in this game in what was an exemplary display by both pitchers. In the end however this was more about the mistakes defensively made by the Phillies and solid resolute play by the Braves as they inched closer to the the Florida Marlins and Phillies within the NL East .

Andre Ethier’s amazing season continues as he embarks on rewriting the Los Angeles Dodgers’ record book. Ethier is on the cusp of becoming the Dodgers’ consecutive single season record in terms of a consecutive games hit streak . Now at thirty games and counting Ethier looks to surpass the Dodgers’ record of Willie Davis’ streak of 31 and hopes to top the mark of forty before he can think about even coming within range of Joe Di Maggio’s 56 game hit streak which is the all time record within MLB . It’s now becoming redundant to continue talking about the Dodgers’ off the field problems as nothing can now simply change that particular landscape as it now stands. The idiocy of it all is that the team’s owner Frank McCourt continues to wallow in the fact that he’s now become a victim in the aftermath of the league hierarchy taking over the day to day running of the organization. Suffice to say that the league , its team owners enabled McCourt and his executive subordinates to enact this madness . And for those opining that the Dodgers and their $3 billion tv contract signed with Fox and its parent company NewsCorp let’s just say if you’re unable to pay the staff salaries for your employees for the months of April and now May please don’t come up with the bullshit about this organization being in a viable financial position. Simply let it be , and get a dose of reality as to how business is conducted in the real world .

Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams effectively announced his retirement as coach of the Terrapins’ basketball team . Having assumed tenure of the Terrapins as its coach in 1989 while the team was under NCAA probation Williams single handedly resurrected this program and put it back on the map. In doing so he won the 2002 NCAA Basketball Tournament . That title has been Maryland’s sole NCAA Men’s title but it has been the programs consistency over the years that has made Gary Williams stand apart as a collegiate basketball coach . He leaves an indelible record having won over 630 games and a run of eleven straight NCAA appearances as well as the Sweet 16 on multiple occasions . Thirty three years as a coach of, which 22 were spent as the coach of Maryland and I’d like to think that makes Gary Williams something of a special talent within the world of collegiate basketball !

Well it appears now apart from Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff looking to challenge the BCS’ antitrust exemption status and its stand as a monopoly within collegiate football. It now seems that the US Justice Department and its antitrust division will now serve notice that they intend to send letters to NCAA President Mark Emmert and the BCS seeking their reasons as to why there isn’t a playoff format in place for the national championship at the D1 level. If that’s not enough to peak your interest assistant US attorney general Christine Varney within the antitrust division of the Justice Department says that she is quite prepared subpoena records from both the NCAA and BCS to seek out how they conduct their business practices as it relates collegiate football . Considering the NCAA is already facing a civil suit challenge by several former NCAA athletes as to the use of their likeness for business purposes within the Federal Court System this couldn’t have come at a worse time for both the NCAA and BCS.

If it hasn’t been enough that we’ve seen the idiocy of the NCAA and the belief that the BCS and its subordinates feel that they’re above reproach . We now have to see them having to defend themselves from what we already know to be a grossly corrupt system that is in place and that’s being defended by an idiot in Ohio State university President Dr E Gordon Gee . How in God’s name that buffoon believes that the system is above reproach tells you all you need to know when you simply survey the 2010-11 and 2011 schedule of the Buckeyes to see how they affix their schedules , wherein they’re literally playing a bunch of no name programs to pad out their stats. In the midst of this all, Gee has the temerity to suggest that mid major conferences ought not to be allowed to have the privilege of attaining a BCS Bowl game berth because they’re simply not good enough. If anything, Gee ought to be more concerned over the image of his school and the fact that its football coach Jim Tressel has no moral character or integrity and the very fact that he’s self consumed a liar and a cheat . Those ought to be Gee’s biggest concerns rather than his asinine notion that the BCS system is above reproach.

I’ve longed felt that were it not for Severiano Ballesteros the European Tour and the PGA Tour wouldn’t be what is today . Having won five grand slam majors and over 68 tournaments worldwide Ballesteros’ legacy has been well chronicled . Long before Tiger Woods held the world as a captive audience on the golf course it was the spectacle of seeing Ballesteros simply play with a fluidity not often seen on any major tour today. His shot making was uncanny and anyone who knows anything about the sport of golf will know how special Seve’ Ballasteros was . Unfortunately , the Spanish star and a successful Ryder Cup captain is suffering from cancer of the brain , having gone through repeated bouts of chemotherapy and undergone several neuro surgeries over the past eight years ever since it was discovered that he had malignant tumors on his brain. Having removed several of the tumors it was felt that Severiano Ballesteros’ would be able to make a slow and successful recovery from his illness .

Ballesteros died at age 54 in the early hours of Saturday morning, in the arms of his family, a national treasure within the country of Spain and a worldwide celebrity . A wealthy individual in his own right , from his professional earnings and as a businessman from his the off the field business ventures , he married Caroline Boutin , whose family founded one of Spain’s largest financial institutions Banco de Santander . He will be sorely missed by the golf word but it was his larger than life character , respect for and of the game as well as his fellow competitors that made Ballasteros stand apart. His dominance of the game goes without saying and for those who’ve never witnessed Ballesteros at his very best , simply imagine the shot playing of Tiger Woods at his best with the power of Jack Nicklaus and you can imagine how special Ballesteros was at the height of his game.. Thanks Seve’ for all the grace you brought to the game and in particular the world of sport , you’ll be sorely missed !

The BCS Stands For What ……….. ? ? ?

The BCS Stands For What ………… ? ? ?

It’s here, it’s now for all the marbles and I though I must say it I’ve not been overly enamored with what I’ve seen throughout the Bowl Series within collegiate football. Perhaps from a standpoint that I’m amongst a growing group I believe who would desire to see a playoff system within college football. Having the coaches , the press and a back room filled with computer geeks summarily in part make the decision as to who may end up playing in the national championship game does smack of idiocy to begin with. Never mind that the lesser games with their rather superfluous names make about as much sense as having the choice being made by a group of blind people simply using a pin and having the teams’ names being listed on a piece of paper. The whole BCS Championship series is simply nothing more than a money making exercise and that’s simply it. The six major conferences ( ACC , Big 10 , Big 12 , Big East , Pac 10 and SEC) that in essence oversees this rather corrupt system if anything ought to be thankful that they’re allowed to keep up this charade.

While there’s been repeated criticism by members of Congress as to the way that teams are determined and the template put in motion is something of a joke. Any member of Congress wishing to address this situation given the fact that the BCS system has its supporters and detractors within that body smacks of idiocy to begin . Were you aware that the BCS Championship series has its own body of lobbyists up on Capitol Hill in Washington DC in order to safeguard its very existence ? The tax advantages to be attained by the NCAA as well as the BCS as a body and one can see why there’s billions of dollars to be made by both of these bodies who as such state that the interests of the student athletes at heart. Yeah I’ve heard it said also that’s the same belief held by the Medellin drug cartel in Colombia as they simply flood this country with their drugs. So what’s the difference between the BCS , NCAA and the drug cartels of Colombia ? Oh so it’s illegal to smuggle narcotics into this country for ill gotten gains while supplying that ever increasing band of drug users dependent on these narcotics. It’s not exactly stopped the big pharmaceutical companies in acting the way that they’ve been allowed even with the FDA as a conduit . Merely look at the billions made by these companies and the financial windfall it creates for the federal government by way of the taxes ? That’s simply the only difference between the two entities in question and the way that the government views their activities by way of its legality.

The championship game sponsored by Tostitos and to be played between the SEC’s —– Auburn (Tigers) led by Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and coached by Gene Chizik hope to convey why it is that they’re favored to win this matchup against the Oregon (Ducks). Both teams will have their slew of vociferous supporters up and down the country. And I’ve no doubt that there’ll be a certain East Coast – West Coast bias to this matchup and the feelings to be had between the fans and perhaps the nation at large. If anything these matchups are essentially driven by the appeal of the what the nation’s programmers’ wish to see , in order that they can attain the best returns possible by way of a televised audience.

Oregon for its part coached by Chip Kelly and led by Darron Thomas at quarterback with running back LaMichael James are sure to make this game a competitive one. We may well have been spoiled in recent years by the exploits of the Florida Gators , Texas Longhorns and that of USC but this game could very well match that classic of between the Trojans and Longhorns when they were led by Matt Leinart and Vince Young respectively . Both players in question were able to parlay those feats into careers within the NFL . Young for his part may not be long with the Tennessee Titans where his career has plummeted as fast as a meteorite falling from the sky. Leinart has yet to show his true guile for the NFL and if anything his being coddled while at USC may well have something to do with the fact that he’s yet to meet the expectations that many felt he was capable of.

This game will come down to one of two things how capable both defenses are at stopping the potent offensive threats that either side can display in terms of their respective pass and running attacks. If neither can actually stymie the other in that respect then we could end up with a high scoring game and one wherein yardage could be off the charts. Will it be what the fans want to see at the end of the day ………..who can say ? The national championship games haven’t always been entertaining but they seem to fill that void in airtime that the programmer has no other product at their disposal to display , so make of it what you will.

The Tigers’ Cam Newton despite his off the field issues will be looking to put an emphatic stamp on this season having led his team to the SEC championship game (56-17) and winning the Heisman Trophy with ease. It’d be indicative of the player at this juncture of the season to simply stamp his authority on it by showing why he’s the best college player in the game. Given the recent exploits of Stanford’s Andrew Luck there may well be a great deal more on the line with the perception that Newton could enter the NFL Draft for the untold riches that can be garnered there. Whether or Newton can and will be allowed exploit the weaknesses of the Oregon Ducks will be largely dependent upon the skill-set of that Ducks’ defense.

Picture gallery for your perusal.

Oregon I’ve no doubt will come into this game being viewed as the underdogs by the press , public and no doubt the oddsmakers in Vegas. But I’d dare say that they’re keen to pull off the upset and show the nation what they’re truly capable of. Throughout much of the season Oregon has systematically played uptempo and they’ve literally destroyed some of their opponents almost at will. When tested at times they’ve risen to the occasion in more ways than one, showing their deftness in all phases of the game. This game will be a battle of wills and the coaching staff of both teams had better have their battle plans drawn and ready . If not, then one of these teams will find itself in the midst of an incessant onslaught and the ensuing battle could very well be viewed as being one sided and something of bore for the fans watching.

With the $17,500,000 at stake for the winner apart from the privilege of raising the the crystal trophy to signify that they’ve been crowned national champions. Along with it all comes the bragging rights and a great deal of prestige for the winning team and its program. Recruits will no doubt be watching with a great deal of interest and given the exposure that such a game brings they can’t help but feel that’s where they’re going to want to be ……….. on collegiate football’s grandest stage playing for a national title. The end goal being to showcase their talents for the watchful eyes for the NFL general managers and scouts also who are watching. It’s every young kids’ dream as well as that of the players who will be on display this upcoming Monday were the game is scheduled to be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium , Glendale , Arizona ,.

How have you viewed the games that have taken place during this Bowl season and what if anything to your mind has been the bright spot so far ? And are you as such entirely interested in the outcome of the national championship game ? Furthermore , what are your feelings on how the BCS system works and why they’re unwilling to adopt a playoff system ? Simply chime in with a comment as to your thoughts on the matter .

Fu_k You And The Horse You Rode In On !

Having been away from contributing pieces within this forum I must admit that work as of late has me working to be productive alongside my colleagues (economics research analyst within the corporate office of a law firm) on a multiple of tasks for a major corporate client . And the same has to be said amongst the players within the NFL and teamwork has to e prevalent and of the utmost if the goal is to achieve success . Having witness the maelstrom and the enigma and the NFL season that has become a complete misnomer one can’t but help ask the question as to what has taken place over the first three quarters of the season. The Buffalo Bills have become a complete parody and wide receiver Steve Johnson now blames God by ‘tweeting’ for his big mistake in dropping the ball in the endzone when he was on the cusp of winning the game for his team in their most recent outing. Pardon me for saying this Steve ………. but you’re the weakest link and a complete fu_king asshole for blaming your mistake on a ‘supreme being’ (deity) when it’s clearly you who’ve been at fault in the Bills’ resultant loss .

You Never Know Who’s on Twitter

By Jason Gay

Dear Steve Johnson,

Dude, what’s up with blistering me on Twitter? Do you think I have time to respond to everyone on that crazy thing? Last I checked, I have somewhere north of six billion Twitter followers. That’s at least 43 more than Ashton Kutcher.

But OK, let’s address your complaint. It says here you’re a wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills. That’s, let’s see…a rest-stop steakhouse in Wyoming? No, OK, sorry: It’s a professional football team in upstate New York. And this past Sunday, you apparently dropped a sure-thing game-winning touchdown pass in overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

All right, we’re watching the replay now on the DVR. You’ve just torched the Steelers secondary, the pass lands softly in your hands, you stride into the end zone, press the ball to your chest, and…oh wow, Steve, how in heaven’s name did you drop that? Sorry, don’t mean to laugh, but: R2-D2 could have pulled that one down.

Apparently you think I’m responsible. After the game you logged onto Twitter and pecked out this tweet:

First of all, what’s with the ALL CAPS, STEVE? Don’t you know that’s tantamount to yelling at me? Next time, unlock the caps-lock key, OK? And take it easy on the exclamation points—you’re not at a Katy Perry concert.

Now as the season progresses and Week 13 awaits us what else can actually be said as to what the fans have witnessed over the past few weeks ? The hype still still seems to be there concerning the Minnesota Vikings and as far as I’m concerned that particular story for me creates about as much interest as the political aspirations of Sarah Palin ! The less said about the two parties the better off the country will be at present .

Now when it comes to the BCS system and the fallout that now seems to be taking place I’ve got to ask myself what is it that about Boise State that hasn’t already been said ? You either put up or simply shut the fu_k up ! Can we get a kicker in here please ?

OK so LeBron James and his teammates of the Miami Heat are about to placate themselves by laying blame for the team’s malaise on coach Eric Spoelstra . Now pardon me for saying this but if the players aren’t executing and the coach simply isn’t able to communicate with the players on the roster then clearly there seems to be something awry for the Miami Heat. The real problem here concerning the Heat is that this isn’t a team but simply a trio of egos assembled together by ‘Professor’ Pat Riley for his own vanity in the pursuit of another NBA title. If one remembers the last time a team had this many egos assembled together in such a way it was with the 2004 ______ Los Angeles Lakers and as we all know what befell that roster of future Hall of Famers led by Shaquille O’Neal , Gary Payton, Karl Malone , Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher . Idiocy abounded there and here also in the present roster of the Miami Heat. LeBron James , Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have shown little respect for their coach and it appears that while all this foments for the public’s consumption it shows clearly that Riley and the fans are clearly not entirely happy with the present situation. Now we have ‘Bumpgate’ and that in ofitself could lead with the possible demise as Spoelstra as the coach of the Miami Heat. Say it ain’t so …… but Riley coming down from his executive suite could very well be a distinct possibility.

So New York Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman and team ownership led by Hank Steinbrenner have essentially stated to team captain Derek Jeter that he’s quite welcome to seek out other teams’ offers as he’s about to become a free agent. The face , heart and soul of the franchise over the last decade plus , now finds himself the unwanted child and persona non grata within the Yankees kingdom. Does anyone truly believe that the Yankees would be stupid enough to allow the face of this ballclub to leave and create a maelstrom of discontent amongst the fans ? A fool and their money are easily parted but as we know nobody spends money as lavishly and as foolhardy as the Yankees have been known to . Can I hear $30 million for Alex Rodriguez whose postseason productivity this past season was about plentiful as a speech given by Sarah Palin as she speaks about the malaise of the country and what ails it. Simply put that wasn’t money well spent but the idiotic Yankees’ fans will continue to regale us with the fact that they’ve won 27 World Series titles . Who really gives a fuck when your last postseason appearance showed simply how overrated and what a complete mess the team was this past postseason. Could I have put it anymore succinctly ? I guess not !

The sporting weekend and all that it has brought us has been simply nothing more than we ought to expect. In some circles specifically the NFL, the ensuing weeks will be about how a number of teams will fare as the season progresses. A number of teams are sure to be under a great deal of scrutiny in particular the San Diego Chargers and how they’ve fared over the season. Phillip Rivers and the Chargers are on a mission and it’s finally to allay the fear of those who feel that the team aren’t capable of winning a postseason game much less make it to the Superbowl . And until this team actually shows me in particular that they are capable of doing that I’m not thoroughly convinced that they’re the team to beat ! As good as Rivers has been this season until he and head coach Norv Turner can prove to us all that they can be great in the postseason I’m not thoroughly convinced that they’re the ones to watch this upcoming postseason within the AFC !

Picture gallery for your perusal .

What sporting events if any this past weekend was something that you felt was something of a surprise for you as a fan ? Once again for me it was the fall from grace of a team in the BCS collegiate football standings . If you can’t stand the heat in the kitchen then simply get the hell out of the kitchen !

The Sporting Weekend And All That It Entailed …………

The Sporting Weekend And All That It Entailed …………

Here’s a thought has the World Series been a complete a disappointment for you ? Are the teams within the NFC really that bad or as the NFL hierarchy would have us believe that parity is a good thing ? The NBA season has already began and all of the hyperbole concerning the Miami Heat has been tempered by the team’s loss to the Boston Celtics in their season opener .

College Football is still trying to creat the intrigue and suspense by alluding to the fact that for the very first time we could end up with an apperance of a none BCS conference team playing in the national championship. I liken that particular premise to the fact that we’re no closer to finding the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden but US intelligence sources repeatedly tell us that we have Al Qaeda is on the run. The caveat here being that the words intelligence sources and US being used in the same sentence as it concerns an agency within the US government. Isn’t it bad enough that the nation at large has little or no faith in either political party much less the President and his Cabinet ? But these are the idiocies of the times we now live in , where we’re asked to follow like sheep and listen to the venerable diatribe of waste and see the incompetency of our elected officials. Come the November 2nd change may well be coming but not in the real shape or form that many might be seeking . It’ll be more of the same as usual , so simply be prepared to take more of the now prescribed medicine .

Week 8 in the NFL and we saw how bad namely the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings really are. And needless to say the two main focal points here are two individuals who simply don’t know how are willing to accept any responsibility for their actions. Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones offered an apology to the team’s fans for their failures this season and when one bears in mind that this was one the teams favored to make it to the Superbowl . Then one might begin to ask isn’t this now all …… too little too late , now coming from the team owner ?

Vikings’ quarterback Brett Favre has seen his and the team’s season simply spiral out of control. Statistically Favre’s ratings are on the lower rungs of the league’s list of quarterbacks . And for those who held out hope that the addition of Randy Moss would bring about some change in the team’s fortunes well they might as well have been looking for some semblance of intelligent thinking being put forth by Paris Hilton or one of the elder Kardashian sisters. Now all one awaits are the statements to be made by team coach Brad Childress and that of Favre , himself and the latest reason’s behind the team’s dismal failure. The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings between them are a combined 3-11 within the NFC and it doesn’t augur well for their rest of either team’s season. Favre is now said to be suffering from his injury and it was there for all to see how much he labored in the Vikings’ loss 28-18 to the New England Patriots. And one could easily surmise by saying that the Vikings’ season has all but come to an an end. Any thought of them being in with a chance of the making the playoffs would be minute at best.

With the Texas Rangers now down 3-1 in the best of seven World Series I can’t help but wonder if this is what the MLB ___ hierarchy had in mind ? And one sincerely doubts this is what Fox Sports had in mind when they envisaged what they may well have felt what would be an evenly matched series between the San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers. In the four games played so far it now appears that the Rangers are bereft of the will to win and the series is about to become an unimitigated disaster for the broadcast network’s coverage. Ratings’ wise it has been none plus and the fact that Ron Washington’s _____ team’s showing has been none descript and must now have fans wondering why bother to carry on watching ? Giants’ know that with their team now having Rangers on the ropes all that is needed is the decisive knockout punch to make what would be the inevitable result a foregone conclusion .

So Oregon lives to fight another day and not a moment too soon as the number one ranked teams were falling off the top of the BCS rankings as if there’d been some sort of voodo ritual cast upon those teams. The Ducks’ annihilation of the USC Trojans ____ 53-32 was enough to justify to me that they are the best collegiate team in the nation bar none ! And I certainly don’t think that coach Chip Kelly is overly concerned what the rest of the nation thinks as he now knows that his team’s fate and destiny is theirs to decide. Win out and they will be playing for the national title …….’nough said !

For me the NBA season doesn’t truly start until after Christmas as by then most teams should be in a steady rhythm and finding their way. The NFL on the other hand will be close to winding down and there several teams will most certainly will know their immediate fates. But let’s all put our hands together and applaud the hapless Cowboys and Vikings for putting together such a hideous and mediocre season. All that allaged talent on the field and even less coaching talent off it. Zygi Wilf and Cowboys’ counterpart Jerry Jones might just be two of the biggest dickwads in professional franchise sports ownership today and that is with due with respect to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ ___ ownership group. And any hopes that Wilf and the Vikings front office had in perhaps conning the city of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota in financing a new stadium has essentially gone up in smoke after this disastrous season . And Favre is still guaranteed $20 million for this season ? WTF ?

Whatever ails us doesn’t neccessarily cure us but I’d certainly like to think that all of the hyperbole will now die down and we can forget about the Miami Heat marauding through the Eastern Conference and then plundering the rest of the NBA like the Norsemen ___ Vikings. This team after all is human in spite of the idiocy of the claims being made for NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy . Now here’s someone whose lone claim to fame to my mind was his idiotic action in trying to fell Alonzo Mourning by grabbing the center by his ankles and trying to separate him from a Knicks’ player during a multiple player altercation and melee’ that took place at Madision Square Gardens somes years ago . It was comical enough to have me in stitches and I’m sure that people who witnessed it live or via television may well found the scene laughable as well ! Van Gundy for his part seems to have backtracked on his claim that the Heat would surpass the 95-96 Chicago Bulls’ 72-10 win tally of that historic season. Now I know why it is that famed character actor Vincent Schiavelli may have spawned Jeff through some genetic mutation …… stupid is as stupid looks !

The season is still in its infancy and we’re not about to see anything truly spectacular about to happen as of yet but I’m sure that the NBA hierarchy led by Commissioner David Stern will still want us all to buy into the feeding frenzy created by the offseason circus and travails of his of superstars and a number of teams . The league in its infinite wisdom has made its brand more about the ego and marketing of its players rather than the teams themselves and it’s now coming back to bite it in the proverbial ass in more ways than Stern himself would care to admit. So let’s hope for Stern’s sake that the season is a truly competitive and successful one for his sake because if as he’s alluded to they’re on their way to losing in excess of 450 million this year alone then someone has to put a smile on his and the owners’ faces. So why not the long suffering fans who’ll be asked to part with much of their discretionary income for a a brand that has become so out of touch with reality , the marketplace and even its very own fans ?

Thank You For Not Participating !

Thank You For Not Participating !

First of all my thanks to the Oklahoma Sooners for once again proving me right in my thoughts that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks especially when they’re unwilling to learn from the evidence already set forth. Over the weekend Bob Stoops’ team literally chose to lay down and choke away a game. The last time I saw someone choke that badly it was during an act of oral sex during which the adult female performer gagged whilst swallowing the ejaculate of her partner during their act of intimacy. Well the Sooners swallowed alright , so much so that they’re no longer atop of the BCS rankings having lost their game to sixteenth ranked Mizzou Tigers 36-27. Thanks once again Sooners as your participation was actually welcomed gagging like the bitches that you’ve now become and always were, simply overrated for all of the right reasons.

Well now that we know who the two final participants will be in the 2010 World Series will be I’d like to thank both Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard for their inept contributions to their respective teams throughout this postseason and in particular their LCS games. The two combined earned in excess of $52 million for the 2010 season but their overall postseason contributions would in all honesty has not been worth 1/10 of that ! How ironic was it to see both of these high profiled players essentially swatting at fastballs that led to the twenty seventh and final out that eliminated their respective teams from the remainder of the postseason ? And for New York Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman and his rather inane statement of saying that he’s ………’profoundly disappointed with the outcome’ is simply befuddling considering the vast resources at his organization’s disposal. If all $200 million can buy isn’t even a decent pot to piss in then Cashman isn’t clearly doing his job. They say that time heals all wounds but I doubt that for the Yankees’ fans now whining and making excuses their wounds will be healed immediately after the team’s rather inept performances in the ALCS .

In the world of MMA Brock Lesnar seemingly eschews the showing of class as he’d rather be thought of as the villain. As the UFC heavyweight champion Lesnar defended his title against the number one challenger Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 . Lesnar had the physical advantage over his opponent in terms of being the heavier man by over 24 lbs but that advantage was stymied by the challenger who made short and light work of the champion by literally beating him to a pulp and becoming the first Mexican American to hold a heavyweight title in a professional combative sport. And for the 265 lb Lesnar this was a damning indictment of how limited his skills actually are, as a mixed martial artist. He may well be a prolific wrestler but clearly his boxing skills and stand up work leave a great deal to be desired. It’ll be back to the trenches for Lesnar with his tail between his legs as he seeks to gain some self semblance of esteem in order to return back to the top of his sport.

Theirs was a relationship that was thought to be one of mutual convenience and as a way of seeking out competitive and financial success for the Minnesota Vikings . But at this juncture the relationship between Brett Favre and Vikings’ coach Brad Childress has about as much in common as the relationship that there’s said to now exist between political hack Bill O’Reilly and talk show hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg. That chasm has and will now grow even wider after the Vikings’ loss to their divisional rivals the Green Bay Packers. And a great deal of the blame for the loss must rest upon the shoulders of Favre himself whose errant play led to the three interceptions during the game in his team’s 27-24 loss to the Packers. The less said about the player’s off the field problems the better, as it is his professional life which the fans now tend to judge him by. And as we’ve now all witnessed this time around Favre is not the Favre of old has already began to look like an aging geriatric who’s aching all over !

These are but of a few of the weekend story lines as they played out wherein the participation of the athletes and the teams in question were about as welcoming as dose of gonorrhea would be to a practicing street walker. Alas the best said about the last scenario the better. Which teams or athletes to your mind were a complete embarrassment to themselves in terms of their efforts put forth ? Chime on with a comment as you’d deem fit .

What In The Wild World of Sports ?

What In The Wild World of Sports ?

It’s been such a misnomer to see the start of the college football season and the thinking in the first few games we’ll see the major programs that are part of the BCS simply come out and dominate. Considering that before they undertake their divisional schedules they’re essentially playing a number of powder puff teams merely to get of the curve in the rankings. Personally I find the whole college makeup a complete farce to begin with ! Essentially it comes down to the fact that the major BCS conferences and the criteria set by those who set the rules have made it nigh on impossible for none BCS schools to be considered for a shot of playing for the national championship.

And considering the asinine notion that this ultimately is the best step forward in determining a national champion is such a farce ! The only way to have a national champion, is to make the whole championship makeup all inclusive to BCS programs as well as none inclusive programs and the divisions thereof.

OK so the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are having a meltdown that could end up being so cataclysmic that it could prove to be scary for their fans and for those who are now witnessing the fallout from this all. Both teams had sizable leads within their respective divisions. And it says a great deal that both Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants are now making the divisional races within NL East and NL West so exciting. Who’d have thought that we would be now seeing the two teams who have in essence have been two of the biggest surprises of the baseball season ? Should both the Braves and Padres fall out of contention for a postseason berth then we can say that much of his came about from their own inconsistencies down the stretch runs of their respective seasons.

And for Bobby Cox of the Braves and Bud Black of the Padres they can rest assured that with this season having been filled with surprises. It has to be said that for the raves and Padres should their season fall apart the window of opportunity will most certainly haven’t left either organization. Both teams seem to be building for the future and that has to be a refreshing theme for both ballclubs.

Before the NFL season has even began it’d appear that the silly season has started. Matt Leinart has been cut by the Arizona Cardinals. And for the former first round draft pick his fall from grace has been truly amazing. But then again for a player who’d set out to show his worth he’s been a failure in the NFL. Now Leinart having been cut he has signed a one year contract with the Houston Texans where he’ll be a backup to the incumbent number one quarterback Matt Schaub . And for Leinart this just might the last chance for the player to actually prove himself . And if you thought Leinart’s situation was bad well consider the situation concerning the Seattle Seahawks’ T J Houshmanzadeh ? The player having signed a five year $45 million contract contract with the team in 2008 Houshmanzadeh now finds himself without a team having been cut by Seattle’s coach Pete Carroll .

The Seahawks are now looking for a new direction as Carroll seeks to give this team an identity. And for a team that has seen its window of opportunity slowly close over the past few years from inconsistent play and the lack of a real coaching pedigree since the departure of Mike Holmgren from the organization. The departure of Houshmanzadeh from this team may not be the only thing that’s needed to resurrect its fortune as Carroll has certainly got to prove himself upon his return to the NFL where lack of success left him beaten and a lost soul within the NFL ranks. His sojourn within the collegiate ranks has proven to be cathartic and an unprecedented success with the USC Trojans . But now we’re finding out that the real truth as to what was taking place inside of the program and to an extent the part ultimately played in it all by Carroll. His departure from the program was akin to a thief fleeing in the night from the scene of his most recent crime. And for those Trojans’ fans still smarting out there and who’ve blinded by the successes , merely look at what has transpired under his regime and ask yourself has it all been worth it ? And one has to ask what was the part of the athletics department in all of this ? Surely a number of those there were aware as to what was going on ? Or are we to believe that this all was solely down to the behavior of the athletes involved in the subterfuge ? Somehow those within the athletics department and the faculty new about this but would rather turn a blind eye to it all essentially because of the money that there was to be made. And made money they did ……..millions if not tens of millions of dollars.

What to make of the constant whining within the NFL at present and the mere fact that both Commissioner Roger Goodell and his union representative counterpart DeMaurice Smith seem intent on wrecking any chance of coming to an agreement with regard to the ongoing collective bargaining agreement. Allegedly this has all become about who ought to have the biggest slice of the pie and how each side seems to be pleading poverty ? Nothing says bullshit than that of a bunch of multi-millionaire owners and players acting like a bunch of primadonas ! But to make things even appear all so much worse is the mere fact that neither side seems to be taking into account that goodwill that has now been lost with the fans. If both Goodell and Smith think that they can now win back the fans after all the idiocy that has been taking place between both parties. Then these two now make the partisanship between the Democrats and Republicans seem like the congregation of a church gathering where everyone seems to be enamored with everyone. In the case of both the NFL and NFLPA we’re seeing both parties act like the ongoing feuding between the Israelis and Palestinians. And as we now all know there’s been no love lost between the feuding groups over the decades. Similarly here, there has been little trust between the league (NFL) and the union(NFLPA). And while there has been no major labor unrest in over a decade this all could all very well change within the next few months should things not change and an impasse remain.

Picture gallery for your perusal .

What if anything has you wondering about the situation within the NFL as well as that of the two races mention within the NL East and NL West as they now proceed down to the closing stretch of the season ? Chime on in with a comment as you deem fit and as always thanks for the continued support as it’s appreciated !

ESPN Acronym Entertainment Sports Programming Network …………………

ESPN Acronym Entertainment Sports Programming Network

The title says it all…ESPN. It’s no longer a sports broadcast network. It’s merely a network that happens just to broadcast sports. It’s main shtick is to get an assortment of former jocks coaches and journalists whose best days are behind them to give us their insight on a number of sports events.

Now to say that they actually provide us with any insight, is to say that you’d be able to understand any one of the numerous legislative documents that’s passed as a bill in the US Senate. As we all know there’s more legalese in those precise documents than anyone would care to acknowledge.

To listen to the likes of Chris Berman, Mark Schlereth,Desmond Howard, Lee Corso, Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Mark May, Lou Holtz, Jesse Palmer and others within what is meant to be a professional programming establishment. Well, it’s reminiscent of listening to a bunch of drunken old farts talk about the days when they were actually very good jocks in high school. Of late, ESPN has become as controversial as some of the athletes that it covers. What of the reports of sexual harassment by certain analysts against female employees ? And one can well understand why it is that they’re saying that ESPN has become similar to that of a male oriented adult club. And the network itself, has been less than forthright when it has come to light when one of ‘their esteemed’ on air personalities gets caught in a plot of sexual intrigue. And now the idiocy of listening to Lou Holtz opine of the merits of Notre Dame as an esteemed football colossus. Well, it now borders on being asinine, given the fact that the Irish’s football program is about as relevant as a piece of dog excrement that’s stuck to the sole of your shoe.

Once again the asinine and incessant rants of Lou Holtz. And his justification in stating that Notre Dame is still a relevant collegiate football program.

My biggest gripe however, is listening to the paeans within ESPN try and legitimize the BCS system as being fair. One man, one vote is fair ! The BCS system most definitely , is not fair !And what does it say about the system wherein, it denies the right of lesser programs to be part of the national championship process ? But yet for certain members of the BCS conferences, a chance to play in a Bowl Game game if they meet the criteria of winning 7 games as a benchmark. To me, that’s preposterous and lessens what the BCS ought to be about. But considering that the six major conferences that essentially makes up the system is rife with graft. And the fact the only incentive for which the BCS stands -that’s essentially to make money for those conferences and it major partners. None more so than the networks that carry the games. They, if anything have more to gain, if the current system stays the way that it is and for the scenario to play itself out.The deck is stacked right from the start, as too is the veracity of what it is that ESPN purports to portray to us in terms of their coverage of college football and a wide variety of other sports that they broadcast.

What is now becoming even more telling, is that the network doesn’t try to be impartial as to the way it provides its analysis for the viewer to consume. One can appreciate that the viewer wants to hear the insights of the analysts. But they also want to be informed and be informed with insightful information. And not essentially anecdotes from their playing or coaching days. If that was what the fans desired, then they would be clamoring for it. That doesn’t appear to be the case at present for the viewer when ESPN’s analysts decide to regale us with their alleged insight and anecdotes.

Jesse Palmer discusses his career in the NFL , or lack of one as the case maybe

Thankfully, as the regular season of college football comes to a close. I for one just hope that the championship games that we’ll be privileged to see by way the respective conferences are a great deal better than that of the major Bowl games, themselves. God knows, more often than not, they‘ve either tended to be competitive or just downright abysmal, in terms of the quality of the play between the two teams.

Corso gives it to you straight from the horse’s ass – in other words, his mouth.

ESPN and the BCS system , two peas in a pod. Essentially flawed from the outset and it’ll continue be flawed until radical changes are made , in order for there to be some perception of fairness. It’d be a great deal better than what we’re being offered at present. But then again one doubts that either set about to be perfect or fair to begin with. It’s been essentially about the chance of making money and not much else beyond that. Both the BCS system and ESPN , whatever it all entails are merely there to entertain us, nothing more nothing less. What both ESPN and BCS conferences have been failing to realize , is that they’ve failed to deliver on both counts. And it’s not as if they were concerned to begin with. Had they done so , then perhaps there wouldn’t be the outrage we’re now seeing ?

The Guys With The Biggest Mouths In The Room Aren’t Always The Bravest Or Brightest

Well it came down to nothing more than having your backside smacked because of your posturing . And when it was all said and done a number of teams were extremely lucky to escape a fate that could’ve been far worse than envisaged.

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen and team coach Charlie Weis discuss the options for the last play of the game against the USC (Trojans). Notre Dame would go on to lose the game 34-27 when Clausen's last ditch attempted pass was an incomplete into the endzone. USC (Trojans) escaped by the skin of their teeth , by beating Notre Dame 34-27 . This was the game where the Fighting Irish would give the Trojans a fight. And in many ways they did . But can we now have Lou Holtz and NBC as apologists for the program stop with the belly aching as to the relevancy of the program ? A win they say would give Notre Dame coach, Charlie Weis, something of a respite for those who ate calling for his head to be placed on a pike.

Weis seen here discussing his landing the recruitment of Manti Te’o . One would think that the Notre Dame roster is replete with All Americans ? With the exception of Golden Tate , there isn’t much on this team to be get excited about !

And I’m given to believe that because this program is meandering aimlessly nowhere under Weis’ watch. That he’s made it better than it was , under his predecessor, Tyrone Willingham ? The only reason that Weis has lasted this long , is merely from the fact that he brings in the ‘big bucks’ via the boosters and from the Fightin’ Irish alumni across the country. And it certainly hasn’t hurt the program Head of NBC Sports , Dick Ebersol is a Notre Dame grad. How else can one explain the fact that they’ve seen fit to plow millions of dollars into covering Notre Dame , whilst getting little in return via a tangible onfield product ? But then again what they’re now serving up on NBC isn’t all that great to begin with. I mean, when 5 hours of primetime television is devoted to a revamped ‘The Jay Leno Show’ that has now become so stale that even the vultures no longer bother to circle the entrails. You know that there’s got to be something wrong with their programming to begin with ! And if anyone is of the opinion that because Notre Dame recently appeared in a non-descript ‘bowl game’ , such as the Hawaii Bowl (2008) , it adds to the program’s luster. Then think again because if anything , it only adds to their embarrassment to begin with. Especially given Weis’ track record since his arrival in South Bend. One could surmise that they’ve greatly underachieved with Weis at the helm ?

On the other hand the number one ranked Florida (Gators) defeated Arkansas (Razorbacks) 23-20, with a field goal against a 25 point underdog. And if you’re of the opinion that Florida still warrants being ranked # 1 after Saturday’s erratic display. Then you’re sadly mistaken. Florida barely escaped by the skin of their teeth and though as they say “ ……. a win is a win “ . At the end of the day it’s how you win that really does count – Florida won ugly ! Need I say anymore ?

Can someone explain to me why it is, year in , year out, there is a cry that the Ohio State (Buckeyes) are lauded as being a team that’s worth taking notice of ? Hardly a worthwhile endorsement when the program has become so passé. Having played the Purdue (Boilermakers) on Saturday the team and its quarterback , Terrell Pryor became unraveled against Purdue. Now the Buckeye fans can stop with the inane stupidity that they have athletes and with a great deal of athleticism on their team. There are geriatrics now residing in residential homes who show more poise than certain members of the Buckeyes’ roster. Purdue defeated Ohio State 28-16 and their national ambitions essentially, has gone up in flames. But then , it’s better to go up in flames now, rather than being embarrassed on the national stage in a national championship game.

Well if ever there wasn’t a time for the Virginia Tech (Hokies) to implode, then this wasn’t it ! As they lost to their Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rivals Georgia Tech (Yellow Jackets) 28-23 . That would suggest they’re out of contention for the ACC championship. Well for the # 4 ranked Hokies this makes their season somewhat irrelevant . But make of it what you will , as the college football season now embarks on its latter half. Of this we can be sure however , you can brag and strut all you want. But if you’re unable to back up that talk by walking the walk , then you might as well keep your mouth shut.

Now comes the rub , who now at this juncture has the real legitimacy as being the best team in college football ? Could it be Nick Saban’s #2 ranked Alabama (Crimson Tide) ? Who crushed his erstwhile counterpart , Steve Spurrier‘s , South Carolina (Gamecocks), 20-6 . Or quite possibly some other team that the pundits have overlooked ? Let’s just say the polls and the fact that a computer plays a part in the adjudication doesn’t give us all a great deal of joy to begin with. Computers are best used for working out complex algorithmic equations, blogging and for the deviants amongst us , looking at porn</strong. When it becomes part of the panacea of the makeup of the BCS polls . Then it becomes something of an annoyance.

A Rule Of Thumb ………….. Don’t Act The Fool !

Somehow, in some way the more I hear and read about the story concerning Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant and his thought process lying to the school and the NCAA about an alleged clandestine meeting former NFL player Deion Sanders. It’s the more , I tend to think that a small minority of student athletes aren’t all that bright to begin with.

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant seen here holding cancer patient Cason Tacket, right, just after the Cowboys' 56-6 triumph over Grambling State in a game played at Cowboys' Stadium in Stillwaterter , Oklahoma,. The player is now at the center of an ongoing investigation by the NCAA as to his interaction with former NFL player Deion Sanders. The NFL great has stated that nothing untoward took place between he and Bryant. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/file-/ Brody Schmidt .............................

Now it’d appear that in lying to the NCAA the player not only tarnished his image. But it may well have proven to be costly for the Cowboys’ program. Though there has been found to be no wrongdoing on their part. A question has to be asked of the Athletics Director and Compliance Officer as to how a young recruit was allowed to go off campus and meet with Sanders under such circumstances ? Furthermore , if there was allegedly nothing at all wrong when Bryant chose to meet with Sanders . Then why was it that he not only lied to school officials but also to an officer of the NCAA ? If one tends to lie about something then usually the lie that is being told is in order to cover something up.

Deion Sanders a smooth operator accomplice or was he just trying make ends meet ? His association with Dez Bryant has come into the fore and might not be as innocent as first thought. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Marcus Wise ..................

Sanders for his part has claimed that nothing untoward took place between he and the player. Can we actually take ‘Primetime’ at his word ? If he’s acting as an advisor to the young recruit then any association should have been upfront and not hid behind closed doors beyond the scrutiny of those who need to be in the know. Furthermore , if as is being alleged , Sanders is seeking clientele for his own management company . Then his actions and that of Dez Bryant are in contravention of NCAA rules .

Oklahoma State, itself , had written a letter to the NCAA and is seeking only a punitive action be taken , if any, against the school and Bryant. The player did miss a game last season , when it was alleged he was injured. But it has now come out , that he had been suspended just for one game. As to what would suggest , one can but only speculate that the institution saw Bryant’s actions as being serious enough where they felt that some form of action needed to be taken at that time. But why all the secrecy then , when this all has now come out in the open ? The thinking may well be that the NCAA may well come down and bring pressure to bear on the program.

Bryant says he panicked

By Tom Griffin of The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant claims he was worried he had done something wrong when he “panicked” and lied to the NCAA about a meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders at a Texas athletics center.

In his written apology to the NCAA, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press following an open records request, Bryant said that he is “very, very sorry” and “made a terrible mistake” when he lied to Marcus M. Wilson, the NCAA’s assistant director of agent, gambling and amateurism activities, in July.

“It was all me, there is no one else to blame,” Bryant writes in his two-page apology. “I just panicked because I was scared and afraid that I was in some kind of trouble.”

The All-American was declared ineligible by Oklahoma State last week and was expected to go through a follow-up interview with the NCAA on Tuesday on Indianapolis.

“I was scared because I was thinking, why would the NCAA talk to me unless they thought I had done something wrong, even though I did not think I had,” Bryant writes in his letter. “I worried about the interview and was really nervous during the interview.

“I kept thinking about how football has been my dream for years and how football was going to allow the chance to make a living and help my family. My mom, my son, brother and sister all depend on me and I felt that somehow I had let them down.”

A reminder to Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant. ‘Don’t Act The Fool’ . You ain’t outta college yet, son !
When you’re out , then you go your own way and do as you please. For now you’ve a college and athletic career to think about. Sanders , for his part ought to have known better. But then again , who and what is ‘Primetime’ nowadays ?

A poll has been placed below for you to participate in, should you wish to do so. By all means do so and note there is a category in the answer panel for you to make your own suggestion as to the question posed.

The Big 12 for all of its grandeur is widely acknowledged as being one of the better conferences in college football. That being said, how many of their teams will at the end of the day be in contention for the BCS National Championship ? Any takers ?
