They’ve got ninety-nine problems and it’s all about their quarterback …

It tells you a great deal about a franchise, when it just happens to be the team owner making many of the personnel decisions , rather than the coaching or front office staff of a team. We have all witnessed the machinations of Al Davis , former owner of the Oakland Raiders and how he continued to ruin the franchise during the latter years of his tenure. Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones has still not seen his beloved team win a Superbowl in over a decade . Now, while having the customary setback after their loss to the Arizona Cardinals in week nine , with Tony Romo now on the team’s injury reserve list and their being mounting speculation as to if he will be suited up for the Cowboys’ game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars . If Romo is unable to play , a game time decision is likely to be made by head coach Jason Garrett but with a great deal of input coming from Jerry Jones. It remains to be seen whether the incumbent starter will be replaced by his backup Brandon Weeden.

With their defeat the Dallas Cowboys lost their grip on the NFC East , with the Philadelphia Eagles now leading the division over their arch rival . For the Eagles their worries have now manifested with the loss of starting quarterback Nick Foles for as many as three weeks. Foles’ loss will likely provide the opportunity for Mark Sanchez to resurrect his career in the NFL . Sanchez will get the start when the Philadelphia Eagles play host to the Carolina Panthers at Lincoln Financial Field , in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania, in the Monday night game on the 10th November ,2014.

Mark Sanchez will be asked to be conservative in his play, with the likely propensity for Chip Kelly to use the ground game against the Panthers in this all NFC contest . There is no denying the Eagles will need this win, if only maintain their lead over the Dallas Cowboys. These two NFC East adversaries still have to meet in their seasonal match-ups, which will take place during week twelve at AT&Stadium in Arlington, Texas and with the second of the two contests reverting to Philadelphia in week fifteen.

If Jerry Jones is said to have a high opinion of his own managerial acumen, then his peer, Daniel Snyder , owner of the Washington Redskins , who it is believed insisted Robert Griffin III , be given the start in week nine against the Minnesota Vikings. Griffin returning from an injury was less than stellar in the game where the Vikings came away with the victory. Ill-timed pass attempts and failure to connect with a number of his receivers played a part in the Redskins’ defeat and Robert Griffin’s poor play.

With their depth chart simply thin on experienced quarterbacks, Jay Gruden and his coaching staff have brought in Terrell Pryor with a view to assessing the player’s attributes and whether or not he would be a good fit for the Washington Redskins’ team. Pryor’s career in the NFL can be best described as lackluster and very much understated. This could be considered the desperate act of a head coach at his wit’s end , whose faith in the quarterbacks now on the roster, is are less than he expected to see , given the experience of Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy and Robert Griffin III .

The Redskins are now in a dire position and great deal of the blame for their situation can be placed firmly on the shoulders of GM Bruce Allen, Gruden’s predecessor , Mike Shanahan , his former assistant , the team’s former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan . Shanahan and his son, were simply bereft of creativity and the relationship with Daniel Snyder was less then commendable , during the latter part of their tenure with the Washington Redskins.

Ben Roethlisbeger seems to be back at his very best, with the Pittsburgh Steelers now riding high within the AFC North and the two-time winning Superbowl quarterback now showing the poise and play with the performances, likely to put the Steelers back in the postseason for the first time in three years , when their last appearance came in 2011 as a wildcard entrant , where they fell to the Denver Broncos in a narrow six-point loss. The Steelers are winners of four of their last five regular season games, with their last defeat coming in a 31-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns in week six. Roehtlisberger in those five contests, has simply been unbelievable , passing for over 1664 yards , fourteen touchdowns , one interception , with a 112.55 quarterback rating. Rarefied air , but nothing, coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t seen from the player since becoming the head coach.

Pittsburgh, with their lead in a very competitive AFC North, now down to a one-game margin, there remains a great deal to play for, with each of the four teams all in with a shot of claiming the divisional crown , barring any mishaps or major injuries . The Steelers’ passing game has always been based on the efficiency of their quarterbacks. Ben Roethlisberger has been resplendent in showing his prowess during the season , where he has been among the most successful quarterbacks in the the league up to this point of the NFL schedule. A week ten match-up against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford , New Jersey, will see the Pittsburgh Steelers take on their AFC East conference rivals . To describe the Jets’ seasonas dire would be an understatement , where there has been a convergence of ineptitude witnessed in the poor play of Geno Smith as well as the entire team under head coach Rex Ryan. Many are now wondering, if the head coach can survive the rest of the season or will he simply be allowed to coach the team until the end of their regular season schedule. Jets’ GM John Idzik has not been candid about the coach’s position , with criticism also being leveled at the front office executive for his decision making and handling of the organization.

An eight-game losing streak has seen the New York Jets’ pratfalls take on comical implications for the team and their fans in attendance for their home games. If there was decision to be made about “eating crow” or eating dog crap by the fans of the New York Jets, I get the feeling they would take delight in eating both , and then take aim at Geno Smith and Rex Ryan , showing their displeasure at the duo. If Smith’s backup Michael Vick is made the starter for the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , I am not so sure the veteran quarterback can lead the team to a victory. Vick still believes he can be productive for an NFL franchise at this stage of his career, but those grandiose ideas should now be placed on a back-burner for a player who has failed to live up to expectations. Geno Smith , Michael Vick and Rex Ryan’s career have now become intertwined and it is extremely difficult to see how the Jets as a franchise, can move forward, with all three still being a part of this organization.

Five straight games of passing for three-hundred yards or more , have placed the credentials of Andrew Luck under even more scrutiny as the top pick from the 2012 NFL Draft has seen his stature rise since he entered the NFL. There were doubts , as to whether or not he could succeed Peyton Manning and then lead the Indianapolis Colts to any semblance of success. Two consecutive postseason appearances have a way of bolstering a young player’s credentials and clearly that has been achieved by Andrew Luck. Now the question becomes, can he lead the franchise to a Superbowl victory ?

Though the Colts have not fallen short short in their last two games . In week eight they were on the wrong side of an entertaining and high-scoring contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, during which Andrew Luck and Ben Roethlisberger combined for over eight-hundred yards of passing offense , nine touchdowns and a single interception . Chuck Pagano must like what he is now seeing from his young quarterback , with his only concern being the number of interceptions thrown by the player. Indiana’s victory over to the New York Giants was a timely booster , wasn’t perplexing , a great deal of which can be put down to the fact the Giants’ defense has performed inconsistently over the course of the season, rather than suggesting Eli Manning is now back at his very best . Manning , his teammates and the coaching staff are still trying figure out the conundrum that has become their season .

A bye-week in week ten, will Chuck Pagano’s players the chance to recuperate , study the playbook and then prepare for their week eleven contest agains the New England Patriots , their quarterback Tom Brady who once again is having an exceptional season.

Confounding critics, who may well have written them off , after their embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots are back on track and raring to go. The second half of the team’s schedule is a daunting one , with several difficult games on their agenda. Their week nine annihilation of the Denver Broncos was clinical , where the highlight , was meant to be the chance to witness another Tom Brady Peyton Manning match-up, didn’t quite live up to expectation, with the Broncos’ defense simply being in tatters after being shredded by Brady. If John Fox is said to have a concern , then it has to be the fact the Denver Broncos’ secondary even with the acquisitions made are no better than their lineup of last season. Struggled as they have, if the Denver Broncos are to rekindle their hopes of making the postseason and and completely eradicate the memories of the loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Superbowl, then their defense will have to be far more efficient , than we have seen this season.

Peyton Manning remains one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history having broken several of league’s most revered records as he certainly goes on to become future inductee to the Hall of Fame. There is no denying the Denver Broncos are only as good as their quarterback is said to be on game-day , and granted, there are likely to be times where Manning will have an exceptional game , but the team will end up losing the contest , but more than not , it tends to be something of a rarity with this high-caliber player

Johnny Manziel might not have been the first quarterback taken in this most recent NFL Draft, even with their being proponents of the player to be taken higher, with many believing him to be a consensus top-five pick , if not the number one overall pick. The Cleveland Browns drafted the former Texas AM quarterback and he has become an integral part of the team , while being offered a number of opportunities to show his skill-set.

For the moment, Brian Hoyer has the starting role for the Browns and with the team being in contention for the AFC North , there can be no justification to have Manzel inserted into the lineup, as the starting quarterback , in spite of the clamor for him to be on the field. Mike Pettine knows there may well come a time at some point in the season where Johnny Manziel will be called on to take the reins , but for the time being I am inclined to believe he will will continue to ride on the ” hot hand ” of his current starting quarterback.

Cleveland’s defeat of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers added to the Buccaneers’ woes and has sparked the belief with the Cleveland Browns’ fans , this could be the season, where they challenge the Pittsburgh Steelers , Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals for divisional supremacy and a postseason berth. The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals will meet in a Thursday night contest at Paul Brown Stadium, in Cincinnati , Ohio,.

A case could be made where the Jacksonville Jaguars’ faith in Blake Bortles might well have been over-reaching with the belief if made a starter , the rookie quarterback could ignite this fading franchise. Hard to believe the last quarterback of note for the organization was Mark Brunell. Considering Brunell’s last game for the Jaguars was during the 2003 NFL season and that his last professional game as a quarterback came in week fourteen of the regular season schedule in 2011 , when he played for the New York Jets as a veteran forty-one year old. The fact that the Jets were on the wrong side of a demoralizing loss suffered at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles, should not come as a big surprise.

Gus Bradley and his coaching staff will now seek to guide Bortles through the landmines and trappings of being a rookie quarterback , the front office sought to be the future of the franchise. A 1-8 record is not at all inspiring and though Blake Bortles cannot be blamed for the team’s mediocre statistics , yet it does beg the question , if his baptism of fire can be so bad, what are the alternatives if any for the organization to take at this juncture ?

Jacksonsville will have the Dallas Cowboys as their guests this upcoming Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London, England , where the Cowboys will be hoping for Tony Romo to make his return after being sidelined in week nine due to an injury. Both teams are in need of a victory , but the signs point to a road win for the visiting team , in what is likely to turn out to be a lopsided contest.

In the age of the quarterback , where NFL has now become systematically about the passing game and defenses being asked to slow down and actually negate that facet of the game. There is no denying the passers in today’s game are seen as the on field generals, with their salaries and contracts being among the highest offered in the league. How do you see the NFL manifesting itself in terms of how the game is perceived and the appreciation of the quarterbacks ? By all means do leave a comment as you see fit on this and anything else you believe relevant to this article .

Clash of the Titans and then, we’re left with absolute crap as the case maybe

Well, now that we have found out the Dallas Cowboys (6-2) remain what we always knew them to be, an absolute fraud. Let’s see how their docile fans will seek to explain a home loss against the woefully inept Washington Redskins who had third-stringquarterback Colt McCoy starting for the Redskins in this inexplicable loss for the Cowboys. All this from a team, who prior to week eight had been on a six-game winning streak before their Monday Night home defeat to their divisional rivals .

Dallas remains the leader of the NFC East, but barelyahead of their closest rivals the Philadelphia Eagles (5-2) who they will meet in weeks’ thirteen and fifteen with the first contest taking place at AT&T Stadium (Cowboys Stadium) in Arlington, Texas on the 27th November , 2014. Chip Kelly’s Eagles did themselves no favors in week eight , falling to the Arizona Cardinals. This division is likely to come down to which team shows the most consistency during the final six weeks of the regular season schedule. Last season, it was the Philadelphia Eagles running away with the division, winning it with remarkable ease and on their way to the postseason . Their short and abrupt fall came in the wildcard round as they were felled by the New Orleans Saints in a 26-24 loss in a tightly contested game.

The Dallas Cowboys’ fate still remains in their own hands , or should I say in the hands of Tony Romo ? As he goes, then so does this team , in spite of the remarkable season being put together by the team’s running back De Marco Murray who appears to be on his way to breaking the franchise’s single season rushing record and possibly passing the league’s single season record for yards from scrimmage and the single season rushing mark if he can remain healthy. In week nine Dallas will play host to the Arizona Cardinals in a clash of the top two teams in the NFC , with the winner likely to be viewed as a prohibitive favorite to make the postseason .

If this is to be the year where Jason Garrett can lead the Dallas Cowboys to the postseason, then it will have been a long time coming for a coach, thrust into his position by the Cowboys’ larger than life owner , Jerry Jones , whose ego and largess knows no boundaries. As to what Jones makes of the loss to the Washington Redskins can only be assessed by the statement likely to made be made by the publicity seeking executive and franchise owner. Favorable or not , Jones will seek to put a ” positive spin ” on the result.

With the NFL season having reached the halfway mark , there is no reason to not believe the fates of John Idzik and Rex Ryan remain intertwined with the general manager of the New York Jets and the team’s head coach now on a precipice , where team owner Woody Johnson will have to make a decision about whether or not to retain both individuals. Idzik was a proponent in the drafting of Geno Smith and then promoting him to become the starting quarterback starter in his rookie season. That experiment has come to epitomize the absurdity and incompetence seen both on and off the field concerning the New York Jets this season.

John Idzik’s resume’ is quite impressive when you consider he was integral part and one of the architects who built the Seattle Seahawks’ Superbowl winning roster. He left the front office of the Seahawks to pursue the general manager vacancy with the New York Jets. I guess things haven’t worked out for either Idzik or the Jets at this juncture .

A 1-7 record and it is not difficult to understand the reasons why the Jets are in such a position, bereft of big game play-makers or leadership, without having to listen to the rather imbecilic post-game interviews which are mandatory for the head coaches. In having to listen to Rex Ryan explain away why his team lost seven straight games with neither Smith or any of his teammates being able to show any signs of competitiveness. And that lack of competitivity was on view in the Jets’ disastrous play and the team’s 43-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Now firmly rooted at the bottom of the AFC East this season for the New York Jets has now become a forlorn and an ongoing recipe of prolonged disaster. Self-inflicted wounds, the coaching staff and the team remain at a loss to explain their current situation with Woody Johnson yet to issue a public statement on his franchise’s misfortunes.

Rex Ryan and the New York Jets will get the chance to seek the team’s second win of the season when they travel to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City Missouri, to face the Kansas City Chiefs an all AFC contest this upcoming Sunday.

Save the best until last ? Looking at the NFC South and this season ,it might just be the worst division in the entire NFL , given the play of the teams within the division . Not one team , including the NFC South division leaders the Carolina Panthers (3-4) has a winning record this season and it seems likely a sub.500 or just above .500 mark will be enough to secure the divisional crown. As to what this might suggest about the Panthers, New Orleans Saints (3-4), Atlanta Falcons (2-6) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-6) does not leave a great deal to the imagination, other than to suggest , all four teams are extremely bad .

The picture of ineptitude currently being painted in the NFC South, has been on display with the masterpiece put on canvass by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coached by Lovie Smith , where he and his coaching staff along with GM Jason Licht have shown that they and the team are simply bereft of creativity and intellect both on and off the field of play. Smith has no idea as to who his starting quarterback ought to be from week to week . And he certainly has no idea who he can turn to , to provide leadership among his playing staff. Yet, all of the nonsensical debate by fans as to the real issues bedeviling the team and no one ever seems to talk about the role of veteran leadership. Reverence and stupidity among Buccaneers’ fans, who can and still point back to their championship winning season and the fact Jon Gruden coached the team to the victory in question. Truth be known, a blind man with the insight as to the tendencies of the Oakland Raiders could have coached the Buccaneers to the win . Yet , that seems to show the lack of real intelligence with the fan-base of the franchise and the fact they still rejoice in that year and not the very fact in its aftermath , neither Gruden or then general manager Bruce Allen sought to build for the future.

The front office of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , now under the guidance of the family of the late patriarch Malcom Glazer, seem non too concerned over the team’s travails and the fact the Buccaneers’ sole victory victory this season came in their week four triumph over a less than impressive Pittsburgh Steelers, who at the time ,were an injury riddled team . The Steelers since then, have taken an opposite trajectory to the Bucs and now find themselves in the thick of thingsin a very competitive AFC North division.

A home loss by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Minnesota Vikings in an overtime defeat, suggested even when putting up a gallant effort, this team is simply not good enough to deal with real adversity . I doubt things are likely to get any better for the Buccaneers in their next scheduled game when they face the Cleveland Browns (4-3) at Paul Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio,.

Give Drew Brees the tools to get the job done and he can pick apart just about any team in the NFL. With that being said, this season the New Orleans Saints have been far from being their explosive and overpowering self when meeting their opponents . If nothing else , Brees and his teammates are struggling to gain some traction within the NFC, much less the division . Sean Payton , meanwhile , remains the offense minded guru, playing to the strengths of his renowned quarterback .

The Saints still possess a reliable running game but if you can “stunt that”,then force Brees out of the pocket and hasten his decision making and he can become vulnerable, but he still possesses the mindset to carry his team when it is necessary. Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson have provided the ground game for the Saints with their receiving corps being equally adept , led by Brandin Cooks . Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston. From a defensive standpoint , this is where I believe the Saints have their Achilles’ Heel in not always being able to slow down an opponent . We are likely to see the Saints face such a dilemma, when they take on the Carolina Panthers in a Thursday night game we can only hope meet the expectations of the fans in attendance as well as the television audience watching as the events unfold at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte,North Carolina, as the week nine schedule begins.

It doesn’t seem that long ago Matt Ryan was being hailed as a perennial Pro Bowl quarterback and the face of the Atlanta Falcons’ franchise. Having signed a multi-year , multi-million dollar deal , making the player among the highest paid players in the NFL and among the highest paid quarterbacks , it has to be said Ryan has failed to deliver the goods while showing a lack of leadership for the Falcons. Now the cacophony of criticism being raised and aimed at the quarterback and head coach Mike Smith have reached unnerving proportions. Not only are there now cries for the dismissal Smith, but also for the jettisoning of Matt Ryan . I guess when the fans believe your ” number is up”, then they feel you have to go ?

Failure at all levels in terms of the Falcons’ play beyond the injury issues should not be seen as an excuse and understandably teams will tend to use such a premise . Yet the Atlanta Falcons came into this season with high hopes of winning their division and making a serious push for a postseason berth . Now this team is scrambling to save not only the season, but quite possibly not jepoardizing the future of Mike Smith and his job security. GM Thomas Dimitroff also has to be looking over his shoulder as team owner, Arthur Blank looks on at the continued mess his franchise is now engulfed in. It is pretty much safe to say, the noose is now tightening around the necks of several members of the playing staff as well as among the coaches . Blank has been known to show a great deal of patience and trust as exhibited with Michael Vick . Those days are now long gone and with a new stadium in the offing , there is no way in hell the owner wants an inept on field product with a coaching staff simply bereft of ideas. With millions of dollars at stake , this is the last scenario an NFL franchise owner would desire.

With a bye week , the Falcons can lick their wounds and prepare for their next opponent in week ten, when they look to inflict more pain pain into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season in a divisional clash at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa , Florida, against their divisional rivals. A loss fot the Falcons and the cries are likely to get louder and angrier from the fans of the franchise.

Their careers have been intertwined for over a decade and their meetings in the NFL regular and postseason have become legendary. As future Hall of Fame players, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have reached the pinnacle of their respective careers. Brady with threeSuperbowl victories would like nothing better than to add a fourth to his already distinguised resume’ . Manning for his part is a four-time League MVP, with one Superbowl win to his name and the now infamous loss loss to the Seattle Seahawks’ in last season’s rather lopsided postseason finale . That defeat not only surprised a lot of NFL fans but certainly jolted the Denver Broncos (6-1) and their quarterback.

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will meet again in what is likely to be the game of the day , as these two titans of the NFL suit up for another great contest, when the New England Patriots (6-2) play host to the Denver Broncos at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough , Massachusetts,. The Patriots have shown their flaws this season as too have the Broncos and it would take a foolhardy individual to pick against either of these two dominant quarterbacks . The game itself could go a long way in telling us which of these two teams will be in the driver’s seat within the AFC , with the winner, surely being looked upon as the prohibitive favorite within the conference for the Superbowl .

As Tom Brady and Peyton Manning continue to rewrite the record books with Manning recently surpassing Brett Favre for the all-time career mark in touchdown passes , with the Patriots’ and Broncos’ quarterbacks among the active leaders with career passing touchdowns . The question now becomes which two young quarterbacks currently playing in the NFL will be the next to step up to the plate and provide the league with a player rivalry not seen in this league in a very long time ? Peyton Manning entered the NFL as the number one overall pick in the 998 NFL Draft and Tom Brady was overlooked by several teams in the first round and dropped to the sixth round before he was taken by the New England Patriots in the 2000 NFL Draft . As to what this might suggest about the front office executives , scouts and coaching staff that year, can be best left for another time and a very lengthy debate.

A winning season clearly aids a franchise as well as their star players and it should be noted, both the Patriots and Broncos have stood firmly by habits which have served the two franchises very well. It will be very interesting to see where these two teams are , a year or two from now . I believe we are now seeing to of the greatest careers ever witnessed in the NFL over the past eighteen years and the accomplishments of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are unlikely to be surpassed, as the level of commitment and excellence is rarely seen among today’s NFL quarterbacks. Your thoughts if any, concerning the points raised within this article and anything else you believe worthy of a mention .

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t the NFL still getting some play ….

Well now that the shakeout has begun within the NFL , with teams simply severing ties with players they felt that were lacking in productivity or in many cases a money-saving exercise through their own capriciousness in seeking to subvert the cap initiated by the league hierarchy. We are now witnessing that many of the general managers around the league are not as smart as they believe themselves to be. Jerry Jones the erstwhile owner of the Dallas Cowboys suggested that the decision to release the franchise’s best defensive player over the past six seasons , DeMarcus Ware , was simply done from a business standpoint . Yet, when you simply look at the team’s statistics for last season , you will see that the Cowboys possessed one of the worst secondary’s in the entire NFL and much of the blame for this has to rest solely on the shoulders of the team’s defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin .

I recently read a posting by clearly an ignorant and uninformed Cowboys’ fan, who suggested that Ware’s declining statistics over the past two seasons was the primary reason for the franchise’s malaise. Somehow , I believe that this particular individual has not been watching the team over the past two seasons, to realize that they have not been very good or particularly effective on either side of the ball . And therein lies the idiocy , a fan who clearly is blinded by his own stupidity , that he cannot see or simply state the obvious.

Given Jerry Jones’ miscues over the past few seasons, as it relates to the draft and free agency acquisitions , his explanations not only ring hollow , but it is becoming abundantly clear that the de-facto general manager and owner of the franchise, is not willing to admit that he is prone to making mistakes and there have been countless mistakes made by Jones, when it comes to his assessing the needs of the franchise, in terms of the player personnel and the coaching staff , led by Jason Garrett , whose own tenure must now coming into question , given the lack success.

For the Dallas Cowboys, still, the only way is up , because, even with Tony Romo leading the team and I use that word “lead “ loosely , because the quarterback can in no way be seen as a leader , under any stretch of the imagination ! He has a tendency, to make excuses for his own miscues and haphazard performances , while being handsomely rewarded by the franchise, with an extraordinarily outrageous contract. Further evidence of an organization that for some reason, has the audacity to still believe itself relevant in the NFL, when their last postseason appearance , simply indicated once again stated , why this franchise remains one of the NFL’s most overrated and talked about teams, having not achieved anything of note on the field of play in five seasons.

With DeMarcus Ware’s departure from the Dallas Cowboys, his pickup by last season’s losing Superbowl representative, should be seen as no big surprise. The Denver Broncos naturally , are in need of someone to bolster a secondary, that was simply exposed by the Seattle Seahawks as one of the biggest “frauds” ever to make an appearance in the NFL’s biggest postseason event .

Joining DeMarcus Ware also , at the Denver Broncos , is corner-back, Aqib Talib , whose departure from the New England Patriots might be one of the biggest surprises of this off-season , with the Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick , who having often spoke highly of the player during the regular season , concerning his play and leadership abilities. Somehow, this might not have been echoed on, to GM Nick Caserio , or team owner , Robert Kraft, who suggested, that it would not be his intention, to overpay for any player , he did not deem it worthy. In the absence of Vince Wilfork for much of the regular season , it was Talib who often stepped up into the role of the leader on the New England Patriots’ defense . The Patriots’ loss, will now be the Broncos’ gain .

Now there seems to be a great deal of tumult within the Patriots’ organization , with Vince Wilfork now seeking to depart from the franchise after ten years of service with the New England Patriots. As to whether or not front office is willing to acquiesce to his wish to be released remains to be seen . Wilfork’s departure were that to take place , would be seen as a shocking loss to the New England Patriots , who are definitely in need of someone with a strong character to lead their secondary unit. While many might feel, that the acquisition of Darrelle Revis , will be of benefit to the team , with some suggesting that the Pro Bowl defensive player is an upgrade over the recently departed Talib. At this stage of his career , after a rather unproductive year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , I believe that Revis has a great deal more to prove than the recently departed Aqib Talib and not the other way around !

It would not be an understatement to suggest that the echoes of that defeat , is still ringing loud and clear , not just within the confines of Mile High Stadium , but also with many of the Denver Broncos’ players , who simply quaked in their boots during their contest against the victorious Seattle Seahawks. The 48-3 shellacking , that John Fox’s players still have no explanation for, is really disturbing to say the very least. In the annals of postseason NFL history the contest is likely to be discussed at great length, because repeatedly , were to told that the game would pit the NFL’s two best teams , the Broncos’ high-octane offense against the league’s best defense in the Seattle Seahawks. What the fans witnessed bore nothing to the claims being made and was just another hyperbole of the stupidity , of what we have come to expect of a league , that in recent seasons, has been devoid of intelligence amongst its hierarchy , owners , union and most certainly amongst the on air personalities, who provide the fans with their analysis.

Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning for whom, this was his third Superbowl appearance of his long and distinguished career , his legacy may well still be intact , but in terms of his window of opportunity to win a second , postseason title might, now seem. beyond the realms of reality. For John Elway , the franchise’s Head of Football Operations, having himself as a player, had a number of disappointments in the Superbowl , with five appearances of his own , before coming away with the two victories that are currently representative of the Denver Broncos’ postseason success in the NFL.

Manning lost one of his favorite receiving targets , when wide receiver Eric Decker chose to sign with the New York Jets as a free agent , rather than returning to the Broncos. How this now equates with what the Jets are likely to achieve this upcoming season, will be dependent upon which player is deemed to be the starting quarterback for the franchise next season , where the choices are Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith .

The status-quo within the AFC, is likely to remain about the same for the present, with both Denver Broncos and New England Patriots being viewed as the two best teams within the conference . Any contest that pits Tom Brady against Peyton Manning be it during the regular season or postseason , will always guarantee an exceptionally large audience as these two veteran quarterbacks have provided the NFL with some of the most memorable contests to be seen in the NFL in the last decade. . Manning having been drafted as the number one overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft and Tom Brady being taken as an afterthought in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft . It has to be said, that in the subsequent years the league has been privileged enough to have witness two of the very best to have played the game at the quarterback position over the time-span in question. With the careers of both now winding down, one could surmise that this upcoming season could very well be the last, in which we are likely to witness both quarterbacks perform at a very high level.

The one thing, that the NFL certainly likes to make their fans completely aware of, is the very fact that their players are well rewarded. Not just by way of their contracts , but also in terms of salaries , cap hit , length of the contracts and the average salaries . By giving that clarity, it makes the brand certainly more appealing , though not necessarily amenable. Unfortunately, the one thing that the league hierarchy has failed to address, has been player misconduct and the very fact that commissioner has repeatedly failed to address the issue head on and the same can be said NFLPA Executive DeMaurice Smith and his continued hypocrisy , along with that of the union’s executive committee and Board of Player Representatives . Less we forget also, the anal retentive fans who continue to come up with the most asinine arguments to placate the monstrous behavior of the players , by using the analogy of locker room behavior and simple immaturity. Last I looked, racism, misogyny , and criminal misconduct were not part of the everyday workplace or condoned under any fucking circumstance , but there does appear to a group of fans without the god given intelligence to actually figure that out for themselves . Which begs the question, the NFL in its present guise, much like its large fan-base might just be devoid of common decency and intelligence overall !

The NFL Combine provided the fans with a precursor , with regard to the College talent, who have declared their eligibility for the upcoming NFL Draft . Speculation continues, as to who is likely to taken number one overall in this upcoming draft. Jadeveon Clowney , Johnny Manziel , Blake Bortles , Teddy Bridgewater , Jordan Lynch , Jake Robinson , Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack are just a few of the names mentioned. However, the likelihood of one of the aforementioned being taken will be dependent upon the wishes of the Houston Texans and their front office led by GM Rick Smith and what he believes will best meet the needs of the coaching staff of Bill O’Brien , who succeeded the ousted Gary Kubiak , as the franchise’s head coach.

For Bill O’Brien who departed from Penn State’s program under somewhat mysterious circumstances , his intent to resurrect the fortunes of the Houston Texans will be a great deal tougher than some will appreciate . Coming off a 2-14 season in 2013 , for a team that lost fourteen straight games , league-high worst amongst the NFL’s thirty-two teams , anyone expecting a quick turnaround for the franchise might well have to rethink that premise. The Texans’ defense was amongst the worst in the NFL and their offense was not that much better and it remains highly unlikely that Matt Schaub , the franchise’s long-time incumbent starting quarterback will be the opening day starter for the upcoming season . Fans of the franchise would like nothing better than to see the team draft the Texas A&M (Aggies’) quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel , who would certainly be a ” major draw” within the state , but questions remain about the player’s character and maturity. If he is to be seen as the franchise’s long-term future and leader, then those issues will clearly have to be addressed by Rick Smith , Bill O’Brien , the player and his representatives.

The upcoming NFL Draft will likely provide the fans with one or two surprises ,but as usual , it certainly will not be the sort laced frilled drama that have the fans questioning the wherewithal of the choices of their teams. Simply put, we will just have to wait and see, what unfolds over the course of this off-season as to witness what may well unfold. As things now stand, there is still a great deal of drama to unfold, with plot-lines that have yet to be fully played out.

The off-season upheavals that have now taken place and with many more still likely to come , it remains to be seen what else is likely placed within our midst as many more stories will transpire . Of the several acquisitions that have taken place, which do you believe will have the biggest impact for a franchise and which do you think is likely to the detriment of a team ?

🙂

Picture and slideshow details below .

(1) DeMarcus Ware (94) of the Dallas Cowboys is seen here at the franchise’s training facility in Oxnard , California , . Also pictured in the background is the team’s owner and general manager , Jerry Jones . Ware was released by the Cowboys as a salary cap maneuver meant to save the franchise several million dollars . The franchise’s all-time sacks’ leader has since signed a three-year $30 million deal with the reigning AFC champions the Denver Broncos , where he will also be joined by Aqib Talib , himself a casualty of the New England Patriots’ off-season moves of discarding players superfluous to their needs . (2) Dallas Cowboys’ head Jason Garrett is seen here alongside GM and owner Jerry Jones , as they answer questions from the convened press. In Garrett’s three-and-a-half years with the franchise. he is a combined (29-27 .518) without a playoff appearance , since assuming his position in 2010. Jones for his part, steadfastly stands fully in support of his head coach, but having brought in Scott Linehan to be a lead assistant on the coaching staff , it does appear to have caused some friction with offensive coordinator Bill Callahan , said to be not entirely happy with the move. (4) Corner-back Aqib Talib who was not re-signed by the New England Patriots and another salary cap casualty of the off-season , has signed a multi-year deal with the Denver Broncos . The team’s Head of Football Operations , John Elway believes that the signing will be of benefit to the team’s secondary , along with the well publicized acquisition of DeMarcus Ware . These might not be the last of the ambitious moves made by Elway, as he seeks to bolster the team’s roster. AP Photo / Mark Roth ….

(5) Darrelle Revis (24) , one year off , from a failed experiment in Tampa Bay and having signed a six-year $96 million non-guaranteed contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the player was released by the franchise and has since signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots. (8) The South Carolina Gamecocks’ Jadeveon Clowney is seen some circles as the prospective number one overall draft pick , with Clowney also expressing his belief that not only is he the defensive player amongst the crop of players on the secondary , but the best college player overall, that will be on parade this entire draft. (9) Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel seen here at the NFL Combine held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis ,Indiana ,. The player met with the press and answered questions posed on what he believes his future prospects are in the NFL. Choosing not to participate in any of the quarterback exercise drills at the Combine, are not thought to have had an adverse effect on where he is likely to ranked or drafted, by analysts compiling their own assessment of the players . The Houston Texans with the number one overall pick are in need of a quarterback , after a dismal year by Matt Schaub , albeit that on the team’s depth chart Case Keenum was able to show some momentary flashes of composure , though not overly convincing enough to have you believe that he would be a desired starter for a Bill O’Brien coached offense. The Texans’ head coach is also thought to be interested in acquiring a veteran free agent quarterback or has been repeatedly reported , his continuing interest in the Patriots’ Ryan Mallett is said to be ongoing . The AFC East based franchise are said to be reluctant in releasing the player , they believe to be a ready made backup and replacement for their long-time starting quarterback Tom Brady . A fascinating look at stupidity or as I would like to say, another day, another idiotic decision by Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys

They may no longer be ” America’s Team” , but they remain one of the most valuable and profitable professional sports’ franchises in the world , and by far the most profitable in the NFL . Five Superbowl victories have as such, defined the legacy of the Dallas Cowboys as an NFL franchise. Unfortunately, for the Cowboys, the last of those Superbowl victories, came in the 1995 season , when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers for the last of their quintuple of Lombardi Trophy successes . Two-decades, is an extremely long time to go without an appearance in the NFL’s most prestigious game, its postseason finale.

Coming off another disappointing season for the Dallas Cowboys , with the customary excuses repeatedly being made by a number of executives , players and the coaching staff , after another year of incompetency. The Cowboys’ owner , Jerry Jones , CEO and de-facto general manager, has continued to paint a rosy picture of the team’s accomplishments year in and out , in spite of the mounting criticism leveled his way. Head coach Jason Garrett and a former player with the Dallas Cowboys , notably as a backup to Hall of Fame player Troy Aikman , remains in his position, with mounting criticism as to his coaching acumen and capability as an NFL head coach.

An 8-8 record , having gone 7-5 within the NFC and 5-1 within the NFC East , finishing second to what now appears a rejuvenated Philadelphia Eagles’ team , proved to be acceptable to some within the Cowboys’ organization, who tried to use the injuries suffered by the team, as one of the primary reasons why the Cowboys failed so miserably. At the start of the season, the Dallas Cowboys had high hopes of making a serious playoff push with a team that Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones believed to be legitimate contender within the division and the NFL as a whole .

Though the success garnered by the Cowboys within the division should have proven good enough to be great launching pad for the season , it was on the road and with their non-conference schedule , where the team proved to be utterly dreadful , with Jason Garrett and his staff not showing the acumen needed during to close out games . Furthermore , as it proficient as quarterback Tony Romo is said to be during the regular season , it has been his continued lack of leadership that now has to come into question. The player always the first to complement his team when they are victorious , has proven to simply pathetic, in choosing not to accept any responsibility for a loss or take to holding his teammates accountable for their lack of competitiveness. Futility and lack of composure , has now become the embodiment of the Dallas Cowboys and it appears to be something that neither the players or Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett are prepared to acknowledge , has crept into the Cowboys environment and throughout the entire organization.

As if to further emphasize how bad this past season was said to be for the Dallas Cowboys and the numerous issues that the team had on offense and on defense . Nothing, could have been more emphatic, than the defeats suffered during week five of their schedule and then again in week’s ten and fourteen . Those three losses simply highlighted how overrated the Dallas Cowboys remain and how out of touch the coaching staff just happens to be and will continually remain to be. The issues with the team are not just about the talent said to have been assembled, but the very fact that this team is one made up of individuals who are seemingly cannot play together as a cohesive unit, showing any degree of consistency.

Players such as DeMarcus Ware and Jason Witten, could make their way unto any team in the NFL, but the rest of this Cowboys’ roster is simply just a mere caricature of what should be expected of a competitive NFL franchise. I intentionally excluded the likes of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant, because as good as both are said to be, neither can put together a string of games where they both are able to play at a continuously high level.

Monte Kiffin was brought in as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator and that experiment bore about as much fruit as could be found in a vineyard of rotten grapes. Consider the fact, that during Kiffin’s tenure as an assistant to his son Lane Kiffin , while he was head coach of the USC Trojans’ program , those teams would be abysmal during the majority of his tenure . Yet, somehow, Jerry Jones believed Kiffin to be the perfect individual to replace Rob Ryan , who was not offered an extended contract. Monte Kiffin brought nothing new to the table and the Cowboys’ statistics from a defensive standpoint was proof of that fact last season. Bill Callahan as the offensive coordinator , brought in to aid Jason Garrett , has fared no better , with the same mistakes being repeated, at the most inopportune of moments, during games. Now with rumors of their being growing tension amongst the coaching staff , with the decision of Jerry Jones to add to the roster of the staff with a second assistant head coach to assist with the offense. It now appears that Jason Garrett will now not only have to look over his shoulder to see if he still remains under the ever watchful eye of the team owner , but also whether or not , he should feel threatened by the hiring of Scott Linehan . Callahan believes, his authority will be undermined , with a second offensive coordinator and assistant head coach . As to how this sits with Jason Garrett remains to be seen, but it is now becoming abundantly clear , that Jerry Jones cannot be entirely happy with the coaching staff and the monetary outlay having made to assemble that side of the organization, without taking into account the Dallas Cowboys’ team payroll ($118.1 million) and the outlandish contract of quarterback Tony Romo , who signed a six-year $108 million contract , of which $40 million is in guaranteed money .

This off-season could prove to be a tumultuous one for the Dallas Cowboys without the drama now constituted by the hiring of Scott Linehan. My question for Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen Jones , would be. How many coaches are necessary , to coach what is , simply a mediocre team ? Far too many Chiefs and not enough Indians and absolutely no common sense being shown by anyone within the Cowboys’ organization, that now seems to be bereft of talent on the field as well as off the field of play ! Jerry Jones and the front office are now likely to go about spending the off-season with the coaching staff assessing the needs of the team as well jettisoning players they believe to be superfluous to their needs . Having signed Dan Bailey to a long-term deal , one . that goes through until 2020 , it could be suggested that Jones might be starting off small and then working his way up the pecking order in terms of the Cowboys’ payroll .

If this past off-season was anything to go by, it is my belief that the Dallas Cowboys beyond considering the productivity of their 2013 draftees , may well seek to make some bold moves in order to bolster the roster , with their also being some attrition , with the likelihood of certain players departing .

The build-up to the Superbowl , which will be staged at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford , New Jersey , will provide the fans in attendance for game ,that is likely to be thrilling . Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos , will face off against the Seattle Seahawks, where corner-back Richard Sherman still remains the topic of conversation . There is no such thing as bad publicity , just as long as you are not a felon accused of a heinous crime . Last I looked, the print and television media were making the Seahawks’ player their central focus of their attention, rather than seeking to delve into some more poignant stories. Such as the case with Broncos’ receiver DeMaryius Thomas , whose mother and grandmother are likely to be watching him from their jail cells , where they are both currently incarcerated on a sentence of selling and distributing crack cocaine . Thomas’ mother and grandmother , are just over ten years into their twenty-five year sentence , but both are eligible for parole in 2018, pending the approval of the state’s Department of Correction , Parole Board and that of the Florida Attorney General’s Office . I get the feeling, that were Thomas to win the Superbowl MVP award , after a Broncos’ victory , then quite possibly the “shout-out” from the player, will not be directed, in wanting to go Disneyland, but at the two women, who raised him in the initial years of his life , before , they each, were incarcerated ! !. This story has been grossly overlooked by the press in general , while the journalists and celebrities seek out the players who will be the participants in Sunday’s game to ask simply the most asinine of questions .

I may well not be the only one willing to ask this question , but how the hell does Deion Sanders remain an employee with the NFL Network , beyond his idiocy shown, in trying to ignite the build-up of last weekend’s Pro Bowl game ? Sanders’ eloquence and use of the English language, in questioning a number of the Broncos’ and Seahawks’ players, makes Magic Johnson seem proficient in his speech and a seasoned interviewer. Anyone who witnessed Johnson’s short-lived late night syndicated talk show as well as appearances with ESPN , ABC and TNT , will realize that the NBA great, is simply not that eloquent , nor can he enunciate when it comes to his use of the English spoken word. Horses for courses as they say and for this continued idiocy , we have to thank none other than Roger Goodell and the NFL hierarchy for the annual and continued idiocy that surrounds Superbowl weekend and all of the scheduled and unscheduled events.

A second Superbowl victory for Peyton Manning is unlikely to bring to an end a career , that has been one of the most heralded in NFL history for a quarterback. The accolades and records are already known to the vast majority of the fans and it is widely acknowledged that he and Tom Brady , along with Drew Brees , have been the most high-profiled and visible faces for the NFL over the past decade. However, I firmly believe that Manning will remain with the Broncos for one or possibly two more years , before walking off into the sunset as the NFL’s greatest quarterback ,ever . Rightly or wrongly , you simply cannot deny that Manning belongs amongst the all-time greats of the game and has to be seen as one the top-five quarterbacks in NFL history and perhaps amongst the top fifteen players to have ever played the game in any era .

While the plaudits for the Denver Broncos’ quarterback will remain revered and supreme , one of his more unheralded teammates , Champ Bailey , is likely to be playing his last game in the NFL . Undoubtedly , a future Hall of Fame inductee, Bailey’s career, has been one of excellence and gallant accomplishments. Where he might rank amongst the players to have played the corner-back position will be speculated upon, once he has retired. However, he leaves the game , either as a loser or a winner of this Superbowl , Champ Bailey will be looked at as a player , who carried himself with a great deal of class and played the game with the exuberance of a player , who has always had the respect of his peers .

The NFL and its proprietary broadcast partner for the Superbowl will be provided with a “cash cow “ , once the game gets underway , with the prime-time scheduling of the event . At a rumored $165,000 per second, a thirty-second marketing ad will net broadcast outlet just under $5 million gross for that sales’ pitch . With projected advertizing revenues, likely to exceed $3.4 billion for the league , the NFL Network and Fox Sports , somehow, I get the feeling that Roger Goodell’s post-game summation will take into account the financial windfall for the league and their main broadcast partner. The preceding game event , will be pure theater and at the same time, I still have my doubts, that the Superbowl ought to be played under what are likely to be terrible game time conditions , with a predicted wind chill factor , likely mean that when the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks take to the field , they will be playing at near to sub-zero conditions, with elements that are likely to be mentally and physically sapping for the players . Someone needs to convince me, the decision behind this idiocy to stage the Superbowl in New Jersey under these conditions , were meant to be sound !

What if anything, do you believe, is likely to come out of the off-season for the Dallas Cowboys ? Also, as Jerry Jones seeks to win a sixth Superbowl title for the franchise , which has struggled during the postseason since their last triumph in 1995. By your own estimation, is it possible, that he can guide the franchise back to another Superbowl appearance as an owner general manager ? Lastly, what expectations do you have for the game between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks? Do leave a comment, as you see fit and thanks as always for the continued support and the content therein, as it greatly appreciated !

With NBA season having just begun and with the MLB season all but having reached its climax . It is good to know that the fans still have the NFL season going in earnest , even if the fans and those in attendance have been witness to some terrible performances this season . Speaking as a fan of the New England Patriots (6-2) , my loyalty is not in question , but my willingness to see this team ebb and flow in terms of their play this season has simply kept me wondering why I continue to endure such pain !

As Bill Belichick continues to tinker with the defense alongside coordinator Matt Patricia , one can understand why even at this juncture things have simply not fared as well as they should ,. because of a lack of leadership within the secondary . The loss of Vince Wilfork cannot be made up by thinking that a number of first and second year players are ready to step into the fray . Never mind the fact that even with the return of Rob Groknowksi , this offense is far from the one witnessed .in 2012. Aaron Hernandez’s ongoing legal problems notwithstanding , the receivers on the team are nowhere the caliber of their counterparts of 2012. Danny Amendola is proving to be as soft as a baby’s backside and any type of innocuous injury has to be a cause of concern for the coaching staff as well as the front office , given financial outlay made to the player .

This upcoming Sunday , New England will play host to the struggling Pittsburgh Steelers (2-5) , as they look to make something of what is turning out to be something of a forlorn season . A loss in this game and questions may well be raised concerning the future of a number of players on the roster and quite possibly of the head coach Mike Tomlinson . To my mind , his dismissal would not be in the best interests of the franchise or that of the players . The real issue with the team has been a lack of depth in a number of key areas both on offense as well as defense . And the outcome of this contest may well come down to which team has the desire to win and also by way of time of possession in controlling the clock .

Can a clearer picture now be painted of how bad the Minnesota Vikings (1-6) just happen to be ? The longer the fans have to bear witness to this atrocity , the more one has to ask whether or not both Leslie Frazier and GM Rick Spielman should remain in their current positions. Having gone through their roster of struggling quarterbacks , this has become a team totally devoid of any substance or leadership , with the talents of both Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson being wasted this season . Hard to believe that this is the very same running back who came within a couple of yards of breaking the single season rushing mark of Eric Dickerson .

Now firmly rooted to the bottom of the NFC North the Minnesota Vikings are now playing for pride self-respect at this juncture . And even with the so called light at the end of the tunnel by way of an almost $1.5 billion facility expected to house the franchise for the 2016 NFL season . Does anyone really believe that by then this organization will be able to turn things around based on the current environment within the franchise ?

Leslie Frazier will take his team on Sunday to visit the equally abysmal Dallas Cowboys , a team that has continually underachieved over the past eight seasons , in spite of comedic and outlandish statements made by team owner Jerry Jones . Not far behind that context now appears to be wide receiver Dez Bryant , who recently proclaimed himself just as good a wide receiver as the Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions . Somehow Bryant’s statistics were not the equal of his opponent in the Cowboys’ inexplicable loss , where they led for almost three quarters of that contest . . It would be safe to say , that there will not be a great deal of interest in the contest between the Cowboys and Vikings this upcoming Sunday , other than for the fantasy geeks, seeking to gauge how their players acquitted themselves during the games in question .

The Boston Red Sox were able to pull off the victory (6-1) needed to secure that franchise’s third World Series in the past ten seasons . Manager John Farrell’s influence was clearly seen in the team’s play throughout this series and it was a great sense of achievement after a 2012 season that was filled with the comedic revelry and incompetence provided by Farrell’s predecessor Bobby Valentine > . If there is any justice to this 2013 season by way of the awards given , then Farrell should be a consensus favorite to win the AL Manager of the Year Award .

Game six was simply about the performances of two Red Sox players , most notably their starting pitcher John Lackey and the DH David Ortiz , whose legend with the franchise has now grown to legendary status , simply because of his career with the ball club. Anyone, who now feels that there will be a fall off from this team as next season approaches , his clearly misjudged the mindset within this organization . Farrell and his managerial staff along general manager Ben Cherington will undoubtedly seek to fortify the roster making the changes where necessary , while promoting from within . It is my belief that the Boston Red Sox will start as the clear favorites to retain and make a successful defense of their AL East title . I simply cannot see an aging New York Yankees’ roster or the cash starved Tampa Bay Rays or Baltimore Orioles making any inroads on a team who simply made a mockery of the division along with the rest of the AL , by way of their play and domination of the opposition throughout the season . The postseason pitching and offense of the Red Sox was very resolute and the managerial acumen of John Farrell was unquestionable .

For the St Louis Cardinals who came up short in this series , they can simply take heart from the fact that they acquitted themselves well , but during the six games of this best of seven series they were simply outplayed .

The NBA year tipped off on the 29th October , that for 2013 has begun a little earlier than usual . Yet for all of the nuances sought by David Stern to create an even greater allure for the fans and corporate endorsers alike . The league and its brand can only be sustained by the game’s elite stars and many of the more popular and successful teams . With the Boston Celtics having gone the through a major upheaval during the off-season with the departures of Kevin Garnett , Paul Pierce and Jason Terry as well former head coach Doc Rivers . It remains to be seen as to whether or not Brad Stevens as Rivers’ successor can lead a newly revamped Celtics’ roster to any type of success this season . It may well be a year or two before Rajon Rondo and his teammates can aspire to reach the level of success attained under his former coach .

An opening season 93-87 loss to the Toronto Raptors was not a cause for concern for Boston , but it may will certainly punctuate what it is likely to a season which will be gauged as something of a learning curve for this young and inexperienced team along with Stevens’ coaching assistants . Next up for the Celtics will be a home game against the Milwaukee Bucks as they seek to obtain their first win of the season within the Eastern Conference as well as the Atlantic Division .

So now, there is no chance of the Miami Heat going 82-0 , and I do believe that 81-1 is also unlikely ! As a reminder to ESPN’s contributors Skip Bayless and that proverbial fool Bill Simmons , who are of the opinion that the Heat will march unchallenged to another title . This team led by LeBron James , Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will undoubtedly have a very good season and are likely to be dominant during their regular season schedule . Yet , they cannot and should not be placed in the same pantheons of those great Lakers , Celtics or even the Bulls’ teams that were so dominant during their impressive reigns . Granted , on paper this is a very good team , but beyond the mainstay of their big three and the sharp shooting Ray Allen , is there anyone who feels that there is a really great deal of depth to this roster ?

Out of the gate with a 1-1 record , it should be noted that while there should be no cause for concern as of yet . An opening night victory , against the Chicago Bulls at home, as the defending NBA champions was to be expected. However , what followed in their next game against the Philadelphia 76ers , on the night that Allen Iverson formally announced his retirement from the league , came as a jolt to many , as the Heat put on what can only be seen as a lackluster performance against a Sixers’ franchise that the champions have simply had the better of during their regular season meetings over the past few years . Erik Spoelstra need not be worried , as he is unlikely to lose his job this early in the season and his mentor Pat Riley is likely to see this as only a mere blip on the radar screen, as the team goes about their season . Yet to my own mind, I believe that this defeat came more out of a sense of complacency , more than anything else , with this team , as they were still busy celebrating last season’s triumph . The Heat, will look to rebound from that loss when they take on the Brooklyn Nets at their palatial venue the Barclays Center , in Brooklyn , New York on Friday night . With a combined payroll in excess of $215 million on display , one can only hope that the two teams will offer up something that can be deemed as being a highly competitive and entertaining game .

In the aftermath of the sale of the Sacramento Kings by the Maloof family to tech entrepreneur Vivek Ranadive . It will be interesting to now see where the franchise goes from here . Certainly not the league hierarchy, never mind David Stern’s failure to acknowledge what mismanagement of the franchise by the team’s then primary partners Joe and Gavin Maloof . To my mind , the NBA commissioner in spite of his alleged business acumen , is simply an opportunist, who prefers the glare of the spotlight upon himself and his achievements , rather than seeking to deal with many of the acute issues that currently affect the NBA . Stern was quick to originally back the plan of the sale of the Kings to Microsoft Chairman Steve Ballmer and venture capitalist billionaire, Chris Hansen , who planned to relocate the Kings to Seattle, Washington , thereby bringing back an NBA franchise to the city , after the hasty and surreptitious departure of the Seattle Supersonics . As if that deal was not underhanded enough, it should be noted that the commissioner promised the city that he would do his utmost hasten the return of NBA team back to the Northwest . Yet in the time, since the Sonics’ departure , very little has been done by the league hierarchy to assist in that venture .

Ballmer and Hansen’s original bid to purchase the Kings was considerably more than with the winning bid of Ranadive’s whose insistence that the franchise would be retained in Sacramento finally won the day with the NBA’s Board of Governors and with the city’s mayor Kevin Johnson , himself a former NBA player . It should be noted also , that Johnson also seeks to use public funds to aid the new ownership in making upgrades to the Kings’ current home , before seeking to finance the building of a new venue for the team. All of this while, his own city has steep financial budgetary concerns and a fiscal deficit , not uncommon across the state of California or at the state level , where Governor Jerry Brown and the State Legislature are at loggerheads as to how best reduce their debt and fiscal anomalies brought on by years of largess and no financial restraint being shown by both legislative chambers and with Brown’s predecessor Arnold Schwarzenegger , hardly putting a dent in the deficit and debt crisis that he promised he would be able to deal with , through proper fiscal constraint and the cutting of a number of state ran programs .

Away from this all , the Kings’ first year head coach Michael Malone has to get this team all on the same page , while having to deal with the often mercurial and temperamental talent of DeMarcus Cousins . If the franchise is to have any type of chance at success over the course of this season , then the often criticized center will have to raise the level of his play while leading by example . And if there is one thing we know to be true concerning the player it is that he remains immature and someone who often seeks a confrontation with an official , if things don’t necessarily go his own way on the court of play.

The Kings started off the season with an impressive victory over the Denver Nuggets , where it was an all-round effort by this young team . On Friday , it should be a true test of their mettle where they are due to face conference rivals the Los Angeles Clippers in a contest which should prove to be a very good match-up of teams with postseason aspirations .

At the halfway point of the NFL season , we can now look to a second half where there will be a great deal to play for amongst those seeking to make themselves a serious playoff contender . With the MLB postseason , now having come to an end , the only remaining issues are that of the individual awards and that takes place by way of the legal overtures now in play . A successful season overall ? I believe it only appropriate to let you be the judge of that ! With the NBA schedule in its infancy , I certainly do not believe that the teams will begin to find their rhythm until we are at least three weeks into the year’s calendar of games . By all means do leave a comment as you think fit on this and anything else you believe pertinent to the subject matter .

Mine is not to reason why , only to ask the questions when needed

Well the NFL Draft came and disappeared , leaving a great many fans , either overjoyed or extremely disappointed with the decisions made by their respective teams . And for the franchise with the ignominy of having that final pick for the last player to be taken . Let’s just say , for that player and others taken in the seventh and final round ,it is simply nothing to be ashamed of. If memory serves me correctly , a certain three-time Superbowl winning quarterback and future Hall of Fame inductee by the name of Tom Brady , dropped from the middle rounds , only to be taken as a sixth round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots . And as we know , the rest as they say “ is history “ , not just for Brady and his undoubted postseason exploits but also for that of the franchise .

As a die-hard Patriots’ fan , I must say that I was not overly enamored with a number of the picks made in this draft by the front office of the organization . However, in light of the team’s defensive woes over the past few seasons . I can only assume and hope that GM Nick Caserio , Bill Belichick and the coaching staff , will have firmly addressed the needs of the team . Certainly , in 2012 , this secondary of the New England Patriots were found to be wanting in the most explicable of moments , but specifically during the regular season . As to the postseason and the team’s exploits there . Well, the cupboard was laid bare, during the AFC championship game , against the eventual Superbowl champions , the Baltimore Ravens . Not only was that cupboard empty , but the anemic performances rendered by the Patiots’ players in that conference title game , led me to believe that they simply gave up before the second quarter, simply thinking that they could rest on their laurels , because of a 13-0 lead over a Ravens’ staff that at the time seemed ill-prepared .

The second half of the game would prove to be Belichick’s undoing , as the team was unable to muster a single point in the final two quarters of game . Someone perhaps, should have told Bill Belichick that the best performing quarterback during the postseason was in fact in fact a member of the Baltimore Ravens . Joe Flacco , simply excelled , out playing his counterpart , and further emphasizing why during this off-season the Ravens’ front office were simply prepared to “break the bank” in offering the four-year starter a whopping six-year …. $120 million contract , making one of the highest paid players in the NFL and certainly amongst the “ highest paid “ at the quarterback position . Needless to say, Ravens’ owner , Steve Bisciotti and GM Ozzie Newsome believe to be , money well spent .

The Baltimore Ravens’ off-season has been well chronicled , with their being a number of departures , from the players who were part of that Superbowl winning team . One might surmise that John Harbaugh and his coaching staff might well be despondent after the defections and retirement of certain players, but such has been the astuteness shown by Ozzie Newsome and his continued brilliance , concerning his this and previous draft classes . It would take a foolish individual to bet against the Baltimore Ravens making a quick return to the postseason .Simply consider Habraugh’s coaching record and the playoff appearances made by the franchise since he succeeded Brian Billick in 2008 .

In many respects, I do believe that there has been a disconnect between Belichick and what he believes to be are not his flaws as a head coach. Conceited , obnoxious and clearly, he is not willing to admit when he has definitely made a monumental mistake . Much of that has led to many of the on field coaching miscalculations, which now seem to be all too prevalent in the Patriots` play over the past two seasons. The AFC East this season will be filled with pratfalls for the Patriots as they go about seeking another divisional title and making the postseason .

Bill Belichick and his players , will open up their season with a quartet of preseason games beginning with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and in many respects , I do believe that there has been a disconnect between Belichick and what he believes to be are not his flaws as a head coach. Much of that has led to many of the on field coaching miscalculations, which now seem to be all too prevalent in the Patriots` play over the past two seasons. The AFC East this season will be filled with pratfalls for the Patriots as they go about seeking another divisional title and making the postseason .

As I alluded to earlier , the Patriots will open up their season with a quartet of preseason games beginning with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field , in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , on the 9th August , 2013 , week one of the NFL`s preseason schedule . The team will open up their regular season with a game against divisional rivals , the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium , in Orchard Park , New York , which kicks off the NFL`s regular season schedule .

Now, while this off-season has been filled with stories , that the ever demanding NFL fans yearn for and a great deal more . Perhaps the biggest story may well be that of the New York Jets` drafting of quarterback Geno Smith and the player`s demeanor and rallying cry that he “ entered the NFL to win “ . Conceited, bellicose and full of bravura , Smith may well feel that he has something to offer the Jets , considering their disastrous 2012 season , where Rex Ryan could seem to get noting right and where the continued idiocy surrounding both Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow became cannon fodder for print and television media alike . Never mind the anecdotes that the late night television talk show were graced with, in terms of never-ending comedic content ……. “how far can Tebow throw ? Obviously not far enough. “ How many Jets` players does it take turn on a light switch? None , they still live in the dark ages and no one on last season`s roster, is actually intelligent enough, to even know that Edison invented the incandescent light bulb.

GM John Idzik has been entrusted to rebuild the roster through the draft and via free agency . Given Idzik`s experience and is astuteness in the drafting of Seahawks` quarterback Russell Wilson in 2012 as a third round draft pick in last season`s draft by the Seattle Seahawks , when Idzik led the franchise`s front office . The Jets are hoping that he can work his magic for a second time in such an instance, by having a quarterback competition amongst the quarterbacks on the Jets` roster . It was under such a premise that Wilson won the starting spot on the Seahawks` roster . . Russell Wilson would show is maturity , leadership and dexterity in leading Seattle into the playoffs , where they would succumb (28-30) to the Atlanta Falcons in the divisional round of the postseason .

It would be asking a great deal of Geno Smith to beat out Mark Sanchez for the starting role at the quarterback position , yet given Sanchez’s woes this past season , it would not come as a surprise , should that situation arise . Sanchez is under a great deal of pressure to prove that he is still a viable commodity as a quarterback in the NFL , after all the of plaudits and acclaim received in the first two years of his career .

The Jets will open their regular season with a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida , on the 8th September , 2013. It should be a game that will be a test for both sides as each seeks to resurrect their flagging franchise’s fortunes.

Speaking of a franchise with flagging fortunes , what chance is there for the Jacksonville Jaguars to turn things around ? First time head coach Gus Bradley will have a difficult season , along with new owner , Shahid Khan , having spent $773 million to purchase the franchise, and now seeking push a declining attendance level , and place it amongst the upper echelons of the NFL . For one of the NFL`s least profitable franchises , it must be said that the Jacksonville Jaguars are in a market, where it is barely self-sustaining . Yet for some reason , there is this continued belief that the franchise can maintain a presence in the Central Florida market place , while remaining part of the NFL .

The Jaguars` season in 2012 , started and ended with the ineffectiveness of quarterback Blaine Gabbert , and the problem that apart from not being able to put up points on the scoreboard , with both the defense and offense of team was simply anemic , if not mediocre overall ! ! The struggles of Jaguars will be littered with obstacles this season , which I do not believe that they will be able to overcome. The team in its present guise, simply is not good enough , in spite of the players drafted and their off-season maneuvers in terms of the acquisition of free agents . Call me naïve , but the Jaguars have not been of any relevance in the NFL in over a decade and to think that because an owner (Shahid Khan) , no matter what the success attained in the business world . It is by no means a dead-on certainty, that he will be able to replicate that success in the NFL , even with the professionals that make up the Jaguars` front office and tat of the coaching staff .

For Gabbert , this season will place the quarterback under a great deal of pressure , as he has seen many of his contemporaries from the 2011 NFL Draft have a considerable amount of success, while the player himself , has continually struggled throughout his entire two-year career in the league . Bear in mind also, the quarterback is amongst the highest paid players on the Jaguars` roster . Gus Bradley , has few alternatives , if his quarterback is unable to lead this team to even some moderate success in the AFC South , much less in the league over the course of the season.
.

I am of the opinion that players ought to be rewarded , based upon their productivity and not solely upon potential or acclaim . Yet for some reason, this off-season Cowboys` general manager and team owner , Jerry Jones saw fit to reward the team`s starting quarterback , Tony Romo with a seven-year $119 million contract , that makes Romo amongst the highest paid players at the position in league . Consider the fact , that while many would consider Tony Romo a very good regular season quarterback . The player`s failings and continued failure in the postseason belies the fact, that Romo has yielded little in return for the franchise over the course of his ten-year career. One playoff win , and he gets rewarded with an exorbitant contract , for a player who lacks leadership skills and were he and his teammates continue make excuses, with alarming regularity for their recent postseason woes . For Romo , one win in four playoff postseason appearances would suggest to me, that there isn`t an ounce of goddamn common sense to be found inside the Cowboys` front office and even less amongst their ever under-achieving playing staff .

Sooner or later , Jerry Jones will begin to realize that Jason Garrett simply isn`t good enough a coach , to guide Cowboys to were think that they ought to be , much less realize the fact, that the team last season was not good enough to garner a playoff berth . Now the Dallas Cowboys, are now seeing their divisional rivals back amongst the upper echelons of the NFL.

Now the Dallas Cowboys, are now seeing their divisional rivals back amongst the upper echelons of the NFL . What better way for the Cowboys to begin their regular season than a match-up against New York Giants ? A franchise that in recent years under head coach Tom Coughlin , seems to have found a way to achieve what the Texas franchise has failed to do in almost two decades , and that is to win a Superbowl . In recent years the contests between these two teams have been highly competitive and all too physical . And the NFC East is all the better , when both the Cowboys and Giants are both playing at very best . Your thoughts on the matter ?

As usual, there is always a reason to heed each season cautiously , as the head coaches are going to be on “the hot seat“ . Much of that, boils down to the play of the teams , and how they fare over a sixteen-game schedule . It will be interesting to see which of the head coaches are, or will fall from grace !

! I may well be, rushing to a presumption of judgment , but having seen the customary merry-go-round as the usual plethora of firings take place amongst coaching staffs and front office executives . Given frequency with which the Oakland Raiders tend to fire their head coaches in recent seasons. I get the feeling that Dennis Allen`s tenure could very well be sort-lived ! Team owner , Mark Davis and GM Reggie McKenzie , I believe are deeply distrusted by the vast majority of Raiders` fans . Yet , rarely do I ever hear them being critical of the front office in recent years and the confounding ways in which they have conducted personnel decisions. Needless to say , once again the Raiders` draft class and recent acquisitions will be questioned in many areas , and quite honestly , I would not expect it to be any other way !

With the preseason a little more than three months away , but with a number of teams having brought in their rookies for their symposiums , organized training activities (OTA`s) and none roster invitees . It should be very interesting to see how a number of the first round draft picks will fare , in comparison to their predecessors of last season. Your thoughts on the upcoming season and in particular, which teams , do you believe will be a credible contender for the Superbowl ? Chime in with a comment as you see fit .

I expect politicians and celebrities within the public domain to make asinine comments on a regular basis, and in large it has come to be expected from many top sports’ personalities as well. So it should come as no surprise that billionaire NFL team owner , Jerry Jones is espousing the fact his Dallas Cowboys’ franchise is capable of winning this year’s Superbowl (SB XLVII). Having chutzpah is one thing, but here, the franchise owner is either being a complete ass , or he is simply delusional. Personally, I think it is a little of both!

This season the Cowboys are off to an inauspicious start, and once again inconsistency remains the norm with this team. Now one could question the play-calling of head coach Jason Garrett, and the very fact that from a defensive standpoint , this Cowboys’ secondary is not particularly good. And defensive coordinator , Rob Ryan , would simply have you believe that it remains “a work in progress” . and , at the right time the defense will gain its momentum and find its rhythm .”Excuses, excuses , excuses “ , nothing but excuses from a failed franchise which simply has done nothing of note over the past decade. The team does bear a 2-3 record ,and sits firmly at the bottom of the NFC East standings, behind the Washington Redskins (3-3), Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) and the hard charging , New York Giants (4-2). The latter of those teams , who to my mind are the best team in the NFC , albeit that their record does not bear this out ! The Atlanta Falcons (6-0), remains the NFL’s only unbeaten team, and while their early schedule seems to bear out a litany of soft opponents, it only seems natural as the season progresses, Mike Smith’s Falcons will be sternly tested over the remainder of their season. Now one could attest to the fact that both the Chicago Bears (4-2) , Arizona Cardinals (4-2), Minnesota Vikings (4-2) and Seattle Seahawks (4-2) , all have similar records as the Giants . What certainly stands out is the fact that , Tom Coughlin’s team is one of the most prolific in the league . In addition, that been has been borne out by their net points’ differential .

Jerry Jones says Cowboys can still win Superbowl after 2-3 start

By Ethan Bukoweic

The Dallas Cowboys last won a Super Bowl in 1995, when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Dallas has gotten off to a 2-3 start this year, including a 31-29 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, where poor fundamentals, time management issues and penalties cost the Cowboys a win.
Despite the rough going so far, though, Jerry Jones said he still thinks his team can bring home the Lombardi Trophy when all is said and done. Jones gave his team good chances to win it all on KRLD-FM on Tuesday, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas. “All of those things give us a chance to take a team that is, if you look at the pluses [Sunday], evolving into a team that can compete for the championship,” Jones said. “Not next year. This year.” It is hard to say what “pluses” Jones is talking about. In the Sunday loss, the Cowboys were penalized 13 times for 82 yards, marking the third time this season that they have been penalized 13 or more times in a game.

Also, head coach Jason Garrett failed to manage the clock wisely when Dallas had the last possession of the game, and star wide-out Dez Bryant dropped a two-point conversion that would have tied the game. Even though the Cowboys are not producing, Jones continues to stick by his roster of underachievers. “Let me emphasize that. I’m not into everybody getting better or learning for years to come. It’s this year,” Jones responded when asked if he truly thinks his team can win. The Cowboys have a huge mountain to climb if they seriously expect to contend for a championship this season, and it all starts with their game against the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.

What may well be perturbing the Dallas Cowboys’ owner has been the fact that he has seen the Washington Redskins improve under first-year quarterback Robert Griffin III, while the all too complacent Philadelphia Eagles seem to be at a crossroads at this stage of their season. Does the beleaguered Andy Reid maintain his faith in the increasingly unreliable —- Michael Vick , as their best option to win , or does he make a change and simply give up on the team’s season ? The issues with this Eagles’ team have been well chronicled this season , and the excuses seem to be prevalent from the print and television media within the state of Philadelphia , and further afield. And for the veteran quarterback, he might now be realizing that this could very well be the last time he will have a realistic chance of playing for a legitimate playoff contender. Clearly, the front office will have to reassess not only the player personnel of the franchise, but also Andy Reid and his entire coaching staff.

Jerry Jones, apart from having the most valuable NFL franchise , the Cowboys also happens to be the league’s most profitable team , by far. One quarter, of all NFL merchandising sales just happens to be Dallas Cowboys’ related. And a large portion of the revenues derived from those sales, goes directly into the franchise’s coffers, as Jones, his sons, Stephen Jones, and Jerry Jones Jr , have directly cultivated relationships with apparel manufacturers or indirectly have bought or created their own apparel business , which in turn has licensed to produce apparel for a number of NFL franchises around the league. There is no denying the elder Jones’ business acumen, which one patron recently sought to question. Somehow, I get the feeling might be his best and only option because looking at the sports’ related area of economics might not have been his strongest field.

The issues with the Dallas Cowboys are so glaring that and startling that a tractor-trailer having driven through it all , and it still would not have all been covered. A porous and inconsistent defense , an erratic offense , and not one player wishing to step up to be a the vocal leader, and the fans and public alike should believe that this team is good enough to win a Superbowl ? Fu#k , Jerry Jones must have been prescribed an unapproved drug that is still in its testing stages, if he believes that the Cowboys in their current guise are capable of beating any of the top NFC contenders

, much less anyone from within the AFC . Tony Romo may well have excelled last season within the NFL , but let’s be real , the player has yet to win a meaningful game over the course of his career , much less solidify himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Yet fans and analysts alike continue to espouse and drool over his less than stellar exploits as if they are looking at a Playboy pictorial of some well-endowed buxom females. Nude Playboy pictorials are fine, the play of Tony Romo , well , not so much !

Given, the considerable talent that is said to be on this Cowboys’ roster , then their issues either stem from poor play , or extremely poor coaching by Jason Garrett and his staff , led by lead assistant and defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan. Now there seems to be some sort delineation and discord as to where the lines should meet , and where the blame should be apportioned concerning the franchise’s plight. Jones has not been overly critical of his head coach, but there have been one or two pointed statements directed at Jason Garrett , that are meant to be a reminder as why it was he was chosen to succeed Wade Phillips. None of which continue to make any real sense to me, given Garrett’s inexperience as a coach, and the mere fact that he has repeatedly made the sort of game mistakes that most would find inexcusable and completely asinine. Yet, he were are , where an egotistical owner is trying to sell not only the Cowboys’ fans a “bill of goods “ but he’s now trying to sell his bullsh#t to the general public as well ! Are you buying or convinced what Jerry Jones is selling , is a worthwhile product? Alternatively, are you convinced that he is simply blowing smoke up everyone’s ass ?

Week seven will see the Dallas Cowboys being entertained by the Carolina Panthers (1-4) at Bank of America Stadium, in Charlotte, North Carolina, this upcoming Sunday. The series’ meetings between these two franchises, since the Panthers came into existence , has the two teams meeting eleven times , with the Cowboys holding an 8-3 lead their lifetime match-ups. Their last meeting came in the 2009 season , wherein the Dallas Cowboys came away with a rather lopsided 21-7 victory. If the Cowboys are to have any semblance of a successful season then conference as well as divisional wins will have to be paramount to the team’s success and for the franchise. At a minimum , a 9-7 record might just be able to garner the Cowboys a playoff berth for the postseason, but yet much of that will be predicated upon what their conference rivals are able to achieve over the remainder of the regular season.

If Romo’s play has continued to come into question , then so too must the play of the team’s receiving corps , led by Miles Austin, Kevin Ogletree , DeMarco Murray, Jason Witten , Dez Bryant and Miles Austin . If a team such as this , with that much talent can’t get the job done on offense , then there has to be something wrong within the whole mindset of this organization. Defensively, the team can be best described as being sporadic , albeit that, DeMarcus Ware tries to lead by example amongst his defensive teammates . Ware , along with Bruce Carter, Sean Lee , Gerald Sensabaugh and Danny McCray are meant to be lynch-pins that somehow hold the defensive front for the Cowboys. However, the momentary lapses and what now appears to be in-fighting amongst the offense and defense, that now somehow , has things in complete disarray for the Dallas Cowboys. If Jerry Jones truly believes that this team can win a Superbowl when his there is such a multitude of problems within their midst, then he is an even bigger fool than I first thought him to be !

While the Dallas Cowboys are steeped in their self-indulgent form of mediocrity, the state of Texas’ other professional NFL franchise , the Houston Texans are now riding high , sitting atop of the AFC South with a 5-1 record. Head coach, Gary Kubiak and his coaching staff finally have a team, that can be truly competitive and a match for any of the top contenders within the NFL. With the team coming off their first loss of the season, a rather lopsided 42-24 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers . I would like to think that the complacency shown by the team can be something of a learning tool for the remainder of their season !

There is certainly a lesson to be learned , in how Texans’ owner Robert “Bob” McNair , GM Rick Smith and the front office have stood by the coaching staff, as the organization has laid the foundations for the team’s success in recent seasons. McNair has been a “hands off” owner leaving the personnel decisions to Rick Smith and Kubiak’s staff. Meanwhile, the owner has simply dealt with the business aspects of marketing the Texans’ brand statewide as well as nationally. The team has been very prudent in their acquisition of free agents and their drafting of players in recent seasons. In addition, one of the Texans’ standouts this season has been their 2011 first round , eleventh overall draft pick , J J Watt. It has been the player’s resiliency and that of the defensive unit, along with the team’s explosive offensive capabilities, that has led to the Texans’ success in 2012. Quarterback, Matt Schaub, should consider himself extremely lucky that he has the likes of Arian Foster , Andre Johnson , Ben Tate , Owen Daniels and Justin Forsett as part of his offensive weaponry , which currently is amongst the most potent that the NFL has to offer. The Texans’ next game will be a clash of two of the AFC’s best teams, when they host the Baltimore Ravens (5-1) at Reliant Stadium, in Houston , Texas, this upcoming Sunday, in what is sure to be one of the better NFL games being staged this weekend.

Jerry Jones’ indifference could well have arisen from the fact that while the Cowboys’ inconsistency has remained , the ascent of the Houston Texans has given him a cause to be even more concerned. The Dallas Cowboys may well have been self-described as “America’s Team” , but the fact of the matter is, they are not even the best NFL franchise in the state of Texas.

In light of Jerry Jones’ recent comments concerning his aspirations for the Dallas Cowboys this season, do you believe that his biggest concern should be the team’s immediate future and specifically that of their next few games , rather than thinking ahead to the team’s showdown with the NFC East leading , New York Giants on the 28th October , 2012? What thoughts if any do you have concerning this subject matter ? By all means do leave a comment as a you see fit on this and anything else you believe pertinent to the this topic.

Take It For What It’s Worth It’s Simply A Game But In The End What’s At Stake ?

By tophatal

So while the MLB postseason is now in full swing with the postponed game six being played tonight at Busch Stadium , in St Louis Missouri ,. The St Louis Cardinals find themselves down 3-2 in a pivotal game that could either end their postseason foray or prolong it dependent upon whether or not they can overcome that deficit to the Texas Rangers . Colby Lewis takes the mound : for the Rangers while Jaime Garcia of the St Louis Cardinals will be his adversary.

In light of the monumental gaffe made by Tony La Russa in game five for which he’s fully accepted the blame . Somehow the the micromanaging by the Cardinals’ manager and the miscommunication between he , his coaches and the bullpen could well cost the team this series . Now inasmuch as I have enjoyed the World Series I have to admit that I do find something missing from this extravaganza ! Perhaps although we have a fabled ball club in this event with the St Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers making their second consecutive appearance as the AL pennant winners in baseball’s showcase finale . There still seems to be something missing from the series , be it the drama , suspense, I can’t quite place my finger on it at all.

With the World Series now tied at three games apiece (3-3) in light of last night’s come from behind extra innings’ win (10-9) for the St Louis Cardinals , a great deal will rest on tonight’s series ending finale . On the mound for the Cardinals will be Chris Carpenter who will be facing Matt Harrison of the Texas Rangers . All of the unnerving suspense built up as the series has unfolded will all now come to what one would hope to be a thrilling end . A fitting way to end what has been an improbable and exciting MLB season .

Whatever takes place tonight at Busch Stadium there is one thing to be sure , baseball is looking to make its play as they are witnessing the NBA simply shoot themselves in the foot with the idiotic stance of the league hierarchy and that of the NBPA . MLB will now look to make its play in being viewed as the alternative behind the NBA and all of its drama. Unless I’m mistaken either David Stern being the bombastic and self aggrandizing idiot that he is , and he now seems to be leading hierarchy and owners into antagonistic battle that they simply cannot win without harming the league irreparably. As if that hasn’t been done as it is already ! Opposing him representing the union are Executive Director Billy Hunter and union president Derek Fisher .

Repeated meetings between the league , union in front a mediator from the FMCS leads me to believe that the likelihood of either side reaching an accord is unlikely to happen. George Cohen presiding over these hearings must now be feeling like a kindergarten principal trying to get the pupils under their custodianship to be quiet and simply play nice . That hasn’t happened and things are unlikely to change unless calmer heads prevail .

So here we go again and all of the idiocy now happens to encircle the NFC matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . Both teams’ seasons are at stake because a loss for either , places them each into an abyss that they’re unlikely to extricate themselves from. Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo has had an uneven season even by Jerry Jones’ own lofty standards but at the same there idiots such as Skip Bayless suggesting that the player simply has nothing to prove because the travails and woes of the team have more to do with the decisions made by the team owner , rather than the displays of the players this season. If this is the sort of in depth analysis and insight that Bayless brings to ESPN then it clearly shows that the journalist wasn’t hired by the broadcast outlet for his intelligence or for that matter his journalistic credentials ! Skip Bayless is to sports’ journalism as …(insert words here ) ………… .

I have long maintained that this myth that the Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team is like one of the Brothers’ Grimm Fairy tales ! Fun to read but after a whole deal of repetition in reading , it is simply a bore and that is exactly what the Cowboys have become . Repetitive and completely unoriginal and that is even with what we’re led to be believe is an offensive minded coach in Jason Garrett . And as proficient as this team is said to be on offense the real issue I believe is the mere fact that the Dallas Cowboys through their complacency simply do not close out games when they have it within their will to do so. Whether or not that is down to Jason Garrett and that of his assistants led by Rob Ryan as the team’s defensive coordinator.

The talk at the start of this season was simply that with the acquisitions made by the Philadelphia Eagles along with their draft picks they would be viewed as the presumptive favorites within the NFC . Well, let’s just say with the Green Bay Packers at 7-0 within the conference and the woefully inept Eagles rooted at the bottom of the NFC East bearing a record of 2-4 are on diverging paths . All the talk of this Eagles’ team being legitimate contenders have now gone eerily awry. Much of the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of Andy Reid and the front office led by team president Joe Banner .

If the on field issues are a problem then the sudden outburst by Asante Samuels and his criticism of the organization and the fact that they simply have made his life a living nightmare might just be fueling a great deal of discontent within the locker room. With Pro Bowl caliber players such as Michael Vick , LeSean McCoy , Nnamdi Asomugha , DeSean Jackson , Jeremy Maclin , Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Riley Cooper . I would hasten to ask the question who the hell is now driving this bus ?

Anyone who is not of the belief that both the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles do not have a lot riding on this game is clearly need in some form of medication ! This match-up dependent upon which team is one the losing end of a result will at some point begin to realize that in essence will have gone up in smoke .

If the Eagles and Cowboys’ event can or could be described as one of the premiere games within the NFC , then surely the meeting between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers within the AFC has to be considered the marquee game of the day within the NFL . The Steelers will play > hosts to the Patriots at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , in front of what is sure to be tens of thousands of ravenous New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans.

Both the Patriots and Steelers are atop of their respective divisions , with the New England Patriots (5-1) leading the AFC East and the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) leading the AFC North . For both teams this certainly give them a chance to gauge their progress against each other as legitimate contender for the postseason . Certainly given the form of both , over the course of the season thus far , this ought to be a really intriguing match-up between two highly respected franchises.

Coaches Mike Tomlinson and Bill Belichick are at the top of their games when these the two teams seem to meet in the regular season . And there’s a healthy respect by the teams for their adversary , as should be the case when they meet . Though we have all been enthralled with the play of Tom Brady this season , his counterpart Ben Roethlisberger now seems to be finding his customary rhythm after a somewhat tedious start to this season .

These two teams are making credible cases for them to be viewed as the presumptive favorites to meet in the AFC Championship game . But I would dare say that the likes of the Buffalo Bills , San Diego Chargers and New York Jets see themselves within the mix ! For now I think it would be pretty much safe to say that we can gauge Patriots and Steelers as a measure of the teams in AFC and how good they really are .

If the New England Patriots are to have any success against a determined Steelers’ team then the defense of Belichick’s team will have to play at an intensely high level . From an offensive standpoint there is not much to choose between the franchises when they are actually each in full swing .

As prolific as the New England Patriots’ offense is said to be you can’t help but feel that Dick LeBeau as the defensive coordinator of the Steelers will have something up his sleeve which his team will use to negate that combustible threat posed by the Patriots .

Figure It Out ……………

Figure It Out ……………

Well Monday Night Football brings us a conference and divisional —— matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins . For these two NFC East teams comes the first of two divisional games where the duo will look for dominance between both parties. Mike Shanahan as coach of this Redskins’ team is off a 2-0 start and one of the surprises of the season , albeit that the schedule is in its infancy. The Redskins’ coach seems to have this team playing with a great deal of resilience with the offense seem to be leading the way with the play of incumbent quarterback Rex Grossman taking the helm and leading by example .

From my own standpoint this game should prove to be something of an eye opener as to the ambitions of both teams. Cowboys Stadium will play host to these two divisional rivals with team owner Jerry Jones still singing the praises of his $1.3 billion homage to ostentatious opulence , albeit that the Cowboys simply have struggled in the early part of their schedule , having lost a winnable game to the New York Jets inexplicably. For some reason Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo would like to have us believe that he should be seen as one of the elite players at the position within the league but fortunately for many of us we know that’s simply not true . And for the ever consuming idiot analysts within ESPN who continue to drool over the player’s alleged abilities my question for them is when will they simply wake up to the fact that Tony Romo is not an exceptional talent ? He may well be statistically the second most successful quarterback in the franchise’s history sitting behind Hall of Famer Roger Staubach . But that counts for nothing when you have yet to lead the Dallas Cowboys to successful run in the NFL postseason and therein lies the dilemma facing the Cowboys’ organization .

For Jones’ counterpart there’s the equally ambitious Dan Snyder whose millions seems to be limitless when it comes to spending money needlessly on overpriced talent . The Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb experiments were a case in point where neither player were at all productive for the team last season .

Both the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins garnered themselves some highly regarded talent in this past NFL Draft and it seems to have paid dividends for the Cowboys and Redskins as both seek to complement their respective rosters. Jason Garrett having succeeded his predecessor Wade Phillips seems to have the Dallas Cowboys playing with a great deal of confidence but as I alluded to before the Achilles’ Heel for this team just happens to be Tony Romo.

Now while Romo has a litany of offensive weapons at his disposal with the likes of Dez Bryant , Miles Austin , Jason Witten , Felix Jones , DeMarco Murray and Tashard Choice the real problem has been the inconsistency of the Dallas Cowboys to close out a game decisively . If they are to succeed then it will be incumbent of Jason Garrett and the coaching staff to emphasize that to his players.

With what appears to be a renewed belief amongst the Washington Redskins’ fans as well as the front office of the organization it would appear that Mike Shanahan and his coaching staff led by his son Kyle Shanahan has this team playing with a great deal of resolve . Given the mindset of Dan Snyder and the very fact that he’s a mirror image of Monday night counterpart without the title of general manager . As much as Jones and Snyder are viewed as two of the more high profiled owners within the league it has been their mere presence with interjecting themselves in the day to day affairs of the respective franchises that they own which has led to the ongoing lack of success for both teams over the last decade. Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder may feel that as owners it is their right to dictate the terms under which their teams operate and what they expect their coaches to do . Unfortunately for both success has been fleeting and it would appear that both Jason Garrett and Mike Shanahan are in for an uphill battle if they are to succeed for their respective franchises.

Results they say can be misleading given the premise of the schedules set by the league . But I would susgest it all comes down to how the teams prepare themselves leading up to gameday . And clearly this seems to have worked out and favored the Washington Redskins but I would suggest that their season while in its infancy has yet to convince me that this team is capable of being considered a legitimate contender within the NFC for the Superbowl .

Rex Grossman for his part has shown why he was preferred over counterpart John Beck . And as good as both appear to be for this team it would very well lead to the Redskins struggling for much of the season . The long held belief that the game has passed Mike Shanahan by may well have been justified but that now seems to give us a moment to rethink mindset.

Monday night’s game could provide us with several clues as to the aspiration and direction of the Cowboys and Redskins . Both are proving that on both sides of the ball they are capable of showing playing at a reasonably high level . I am not convince that either the Dallas Cowboys or Washington Redskins are truly capable of being considered amongst the very best that the NFC has to offer by way of being the best teams the conference has offer much less win the Superbowl.

The NFL season while still in its infancy won’t give us a a clear indication as to an outright favorite as of yet but by week 9 or 10 we should be getting a much clear indication as to what lies ahead for the real contenders as they look to separate themselves from the pretenders . As to the coaches on the perceived ” hot seat “ we may well see a casualty . My own thought as to who are the likely candidates ………….. well you can count Norv Turner , Chan Gailey , Tony Sparano , Jack Del Rio and Tom Coughlin should he not be able to corral the New York Giants ——– lead them to at least the divisional round of the playoffs . Anything less , and I believe that the coach’s tenure in New York with this franchise will come to an abrupt end !

Make Hay While The Sun Shines ….

Well now that the mandatory cuts have to be made for NFL teams seeking to reduce their rosters from 90 to 53 players it will be interesting to see what transpires and which members are thought to superfluous to the needs of those franchises. Certainly when this happens players themselves know it’s being done from a business standpoint but more often than it happens because those very same athletes simply have underperformed and not met the expectations of their respective coaches and that of the general managers in question . Now while one can assume that these players are likely to be picked up by a team either to fill a practice roster squad vacancy , most are hoping to make it unto a team where they can contribute and be productive overall for that particular franchise .

A number of players may well be viewed as now having reached the crossroads of their careers , given the rigors of playing in the NFL . Life expectancy for a player in the league on average is said to be no more than five years at best, given the position played on the field . Granted , for the multiple players that are cut , a number are signed by teams to contract extensions or in some cases multiple year deals . It should come as no surprise that the Philadelphia Eagles sought to resign their quarterback Michael Vick and reward him with a very generous contract ( 6 years __ $100 million cumulative $40 million guaranteed ) . It seems justified given the player’s accomplishments this past season for the team . The faith shown in Vick by coach Andy Reid , his coaching staff , GM Joe Banner and team owner Jeffrey Lurie .

The Eagles’ own offseason moves along with their draft choices shows the organization’s intent that this season they intend to make a full on attack with a view of reaching the Superbowl with the undoubted result of raising the Lombardi Trophy as victors.

It would be fair to assume that the Philadelphia Eagles can be looked upon as one of the presumptive favorites within the NFC this upcoming season . I certainly believe that to be the case with this team , along with the defending champions , Green Bay Packers , Atlanta Falcons , New Orleans Saints and quite possibly the Dallas Cowboys . Though I am not yet truly ready to proclaim Tony Romo capable of leading this team to the “promised land ” ! Jason Garrett and his coaching staff first , has to get these players ___ playing with consistency and at the same time simply hope that Romo himself can get through the season without any major ailments as it regards his health. If they are capable of doing that then the postseason itself should become very interesting indeed should the Cowboys be participants in that fair . But Garrett’s greatest predicament may well lie in the fact that team owner Jerry Jones and the front office will maintain a watchful eye on the coach’s progress as well the team’s over the course of this season .

Inasmuch as I view the preseason as something of a precursor , usually of what to expect during the regular season with regard to the starters , I must admit to an extent I have been quietly surprised by the play of several of the rookies taken in this past NFL Draft . One of the players in question that has impressed me the most and someone who I believe can contribute to his team is Julio Jones . Amongst all rookie receivers he has been one of the most impressive along with the Stevan Ridley of the New England Patriots . There’s a reason why Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons and team GM Rich McKay saw fit to make the player the sixth overall pick in the first round of this past draft . Jones’ prodigous talent was on display for all to see while he attended Alabama and it was one of the primary reasons behind the team’s success within the SEC Western Division in posting a 10-3 record overall last season .

Julio Jones brings with him a great deal of speed , agility and the fact that’s he an immediate game changer who can spread the field and add to the offensive weaponry at the disposal of Matt Ryan as the team’s quarterback. And given the prodigious talents of Roddy White , Michael Turner , Jason Snelling and Tony Gonzalez , it has to be said that this team along with the prerequisite draft picks taken , this franchise does now have a legitimate view to be take much more seriously as a bona-fide contender. And that is in light of their postseason meltdown last year against (48-21 ) the eventual champions , the Green Bay Packers .

Within the AFC it has to be said for the San Diego Chargers this might well be the last opportunity for them to have that shot at the “brass ring ” . Norv Turner as the team’s coach has repeatedly found ways to inexplicably coach the franchise to moderate depths of what one deem to be acceptable failure . But if you happen to be a die-hard Chargers’ fans can you honestly say that you find the coach’s missteps as being appropriate , given the talent at his disposal ? The excuses have been continually made about injuries sustained by the team over the course of a season but I believe it comes more from the fact that Norv Turner is essentially out of his depth as a head coach ! If you can’t win with Philip Rivers and that offense , then that’s a clear sign that this team won’t be winning anything at all , anytime soon !

The San Diego Chargers’ GM AJ Smith along with Turner’s coaching staff made the moves that they believed to be in the best interests of the organization as they move forward . Certainly , from a player personnel standpoint ,the roster needed to have more depth in the roster from an offense , defensive and on special team’s . This task would be undertaken with the usual diligence one would come to expect from an organization that seeks turn itself around after a lackluster season that simply further enhanced the fact that the Chargers failed miserably within the AFC West .

For the San Diego Chargers this NFL Draft proved to be a fortuitous one by way of the players acquired . Corey Liuget , Marcus Gilchrist , Jonas Mouton , Vincent Brown , Shareece Wright , Jordan Todman , Steve Schilling and Andrew Gachkar can be productive for this team , given the opportunity to do so. But much of that however will be predicated upon what each brings to the table and how Norv Turner chooses to get the best out these draftees.

The regular season itself starts out with two games that should tell us a great deal about the San Diego Chargers . Their season opener at home against the Minnesota Vikings at Qualcomm Stadium before taking on conference rivals the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough , Massachusetts . Right out of the gate this Chargers’ team has to be ready to play at a high level of consistency as they can ill afford to make any un-necessary slip-ups . All too often we have seen the team play half heartedly over the past two seasons only to somehow fail , much of that being of their own doing . Norv Turner may well be on “the hot seat” in terms of the coaches said to be close , to losing their current positions . Should the Chargers’ coach fail at this juncture , then I for one feel that there’s no justification for him at all to retain his position with the organization !

Interestingly enough , the one player I felt would be ready for the season , will now quite possibly sit out the first six or seven games of the regular NFL schedule. Terrell Owens whose productivity with the Cincinnati Bengals couldn’t be questioned , is now recuperating , having had off season surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in right his knee. The player believe he’s still quite capable of offering something to a contending team in the NFL but I for one now believe that these are the waning days of a player whose career has been littered with controversy as well as some great highs and lows . A Hall of Famer ? Should he choose to retire and meet the criteria set , then Owens would seem to be an automatic choice to be inducted .

Week 4 of the preseason now beckons as the teams look to get themselves into a set rhythm before they embark upon their regular season schedule. A great deal will be made over how the franchises acquit themselves through those initial first couple of games , as I believe we may well be seeing number of teams simply struggle to overcome their inadequacies as they would normally have to. This NFL stoppage if anything has opened our eyes as to a number of reasons why this whole facade was completely unnecessary but you’d be hard pressed to convince the NFL league hierarchy or the NFLPA . What thoughts if any do you have on the upcoming season and with regard to any of the points raised within this article ? Simply leave a comment as to your thoughts .

Did Hell Freeze Over ? The Ryans Are At It Again …… Well At Least One Of Them Appears To Be ….

Did Hell Freeze Over ? The Ryans Are At It Again …… Well At Least One Of Them Appears To Be …..

So Rob Ryan feels that the Dallas Cowboys are not getting the respect that he feels the team rightfully deserves . The defensive coordinator brought in by head coach Jason Garrett to improve the defensive capabilities of the organization feels aggrieved that the Philadelphia Eagles are now being lauded over as the team to beat within the NFC . As Ryan would suggest in a public statement ………….. ” we Ryans walk the walk and don’t simply talk the talk ” . Perhaps Rob Ryan should remember his brother Rex Ryan’s own mea culpa last season in predicting that the New York Jets would win the Superbowl . And as we all know the Jets fell short once again at the penultimate obstacle .

Rob Ryan should now spend what time he has coaching this Cowboys’ defense and get them playing with some brevitas rather than the sheer ineptitude on display last season . And as good as this team believe themselves to be from my own standpoint I find the Dallas Cowboys simply over-rated ! And it certainly hasn’t helped that Jerry Jones as the team owner , whose own persona is almost as big as the stupendous Cowboys’ Stadium . In his tenure as the team owner this organization has seen the highs and the lows . If nothing else it would appear that the idiocy of the tv pundits remain as if look to place the Cowboys amongst the teams they believe to amongst the contenders for the Superbowl.

Rob Ryan takes swipe at ‘all-hype team’

By Tim McMahon , ESPN Dallas

SAN ANTONIO — New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is well aware that the Dallas Cowboys’ signings of Marcus Spears, Kenyon Coleman and Jason Hatcher aren’t sexy, but that’s fine by him.

“I don’t know if we win the all-hype team,” Ryan said after Monday’s second practice, when asked about the Cowboys’ defensive end rotation. “That might have gone to someone else, but we’re going to beat their ass when we play them.”

So who would win all-hype honors?

“I don’t know,” Ryan muttered, then excused himself from the media horde.

Might Ryan have been referring to the NFC East squad that signed an All-Pro cornerback (Nnamdi Asomugha), a Super Bowl champion defensive lineman (Cullen Jenkins), a Pro Bowl pass-rusher (Jason Babin) and a former third overall pick/backup quarterback (Vince Young), plus traded for another Pro Bowl cornerback (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) in the past week?

Jenkins, who signed a five-year deal with the Eagles Saturday, responded late Monday night via Twitter: “Talk is cheap. Let them talk. We are focused here and I could care less. We are worried about ourselves n getting better. He must be nervous.”

The Ryan family has fired plenty of shots in the Cowboys-Eagles rivalry, which features an entire chapter about Rob’s father Buddy Ryan’s days as Philadelphia’s fiery, foul-mouthed head coach.

However, this might have been the first shot fired by a Ryan while defending the Cowboys, although it wasn’t a direct blow.

The Cowboys visit the Eagles in a nationally televised prime-time game Oct. 30, and host Philadelphia Dec. 24.

———————————————————————————————————————————

I think that much of Rob Ryan’s resentment comes from the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are not the primary story on the sports pages as the Philadelphia Eagles through their moves have usurped “America’s Team” with the publicity they are now getting . And as we all know Jerry Jones and this organization have never been publicity shy. Granted , as one of the teams within the always competitive NFC East the Dallas Cowboys will be up against the New York Giants , Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins . Both the Giants and Redskins appear to be works in progress and with the contractual problems that now seem to have arisen concerning Osi Umenyiora it would appear that Tom Coughlin’s team could well be in for a pretty inauspicious start to the pre and regular season . Umenyiora for his part would like a contract extension but that doesn’t appear that the front office is amenable to the player’s request at present . The defensive stalwart has asked to be traded should the New York Giants fail to meet his demands . So as with numerous teams who tend to have a situation where a player feels dissatisfied with his contract situation , it then becomes a premise of the the player in this case Osi Umenyiora seeking a trade or holding out of training camp seeking to force the issue .

The Cowboys’ season will be predicated on the play of Tony Romo , as he goes , so does this team . With the moves made by Jerry Jones during the off-season and their draft choices it will be very interesting to see how the Dallas Cowboys acquit themselves over the course of the year . There’s no denying that the team can be as prolific from an offensive standpoint but in reality apart from the injuries suffered last season it has been their inconsistency that in many respects led to the team’s complacency and downfall. If there was one thing I found abundantly clear about the Dallas Cowboys it has been the very fact that Jerry Jones does not always know what is best for this organization. As shrewd as businessman as we know him to be and that he stands heads and shoulders above his peers when it comes to the branding and garnering the publicity for a team . The franchise itself now amongst the most valuable sports teams in the world and by far the most valuable team in the NFL .

The Dallas Cowboys currently valued at over $1.85 billion , Jerry Jones knows that he’s sitting on a gold mine as the organization looks to make the organization resurgent both on and off the field. Cowboys Stadium the vast edifice built to Jones’ grandiose requirements with its large jumbotron screen and a capacity to seat 100,000 fans has become the doyenne of the NFL market place. The venue itself staged several major concerts and sporting events. But the long held feeling of the owner Jerry Jones was to have his team host the Superbowl . That hasn’t happened and it’s unlikely to happen for the foreseeable future , until the Dallas Cowboys are able handle whatever is thrown their way in terms of real adversity.

Jason Garrett along with Rob Ryan and the coaching staff will have their work cut for them this season as the team looks to make themselves credible contenders. Jason Witten , Dez Bryant , DeMarcus Ware , Miles Austin and Tony Romo himself will have to lead the team with a great deal of authority. Inasmuch as the quarterback is viewed amongst the elite players at the position within the league . Romo in name only and his fans may well feel ranks up there with the elite quarterbacks but from my own perspective , Romo while competent , when there’s real adversity in their midst , it appears the moment he’s beset by a real threat ___ he along with his teammates will simply fold like a cheaply made suit !

Jason Garrett in particular will come under a great deal of scrutiny and given the fact that his predecessor Wade Phillips may well have been the sacrificial lamb after the team’s disappointing season in 2010 . With Phillips’ firing and Jerry Jones’ admission that mistakes had been made on his part he knows that the 2011-12 season numerous questions will be asked answered not only about the team but the entire organization as a whole. If there are no answers forthcoming then clearly it tell us a great deal about the character of the players and in particular about the Dallas Cowboys.

From your own standpoint do you see the Dallas Cowboys being a formidable challenge within the NFC and league as a whole ? And as such is Rob Ryan justified in his criticism of the Philadelphia Eagles ____ and the fact that he views team as getting far more publicity than they deserve ? Leave a comment as you would deem fit and thanks for the continued support .

NFL Season At A Glance ……………….

NFL Season At A Glance ……………….

The NFL —– season has been one of surprises and a great deal of disappointment and if anything the off the field stories have been just as suspenseful as the intrigue on the field. Brett Favre’s downward spiral into mediocrity has been one big hoop-lah after the other. And it would appear that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would rather suborn the player’s behavior and hide behind the fact that quite possibly Favre’s imminent retirement will circumvent him having to suspend the player if his verdict is in fact a positive one that finds the player guilty any wrongdoing in his alleged sexual misconduct concerning a former New York Jets’ employee.

On the field we’ve seen the fall from grace of the Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys the presumptive favorites to make it to this season’s NFC championship game. And as much as I’d like to say that it all came as a surprise to me but in reality nothing pleased me more than seeing both of these over hyped and underachieving teams fall like a lead balloon. Foolhardy management, inadequate coaching and players who simply were complacent essentially played a part in the soap opera that has encapsulated both teams’ season. For owners Jerry Jones and Zygi Wilf they’ve seen their year fall apart and that of any ambition they had professionally as well as from a financial standpoint. In Wilf’s case it was also the prospect of having the upper hand in terms of persuading the state legislature in their upcoming vote for a new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings. Jerry Jones’ ambition of not only hosting the Superbowl as the NFC representative has been shot to hell .

Coaching changes are abound with two firings have taken place Wade Philips , Brad Childress and it’s clear that with the Cincinnati Bengals —– Marvin Lewis choosing not to return to the team next season we may well be in for a slew of coaching upheavals with there being speculation as to whether or not the likes of Jon Gruden , Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy will be making a return to the NFL. They are viewed as the top three desirable coaching free agents on the market and it’d be asinine to think that a number of teams around the NFL won’t offer the trio an interview for any vacancy that may well arise.

Now while a number of teams are now in the mix for a playoff spot as well as those divisional titles that have yet to be settled . It goes without saying that for those teams who could end up playing spoiler and put an end of those postseason desirables. In the AFC West where I’ve always maintained that the football being played there borders on being mediocre, I’m still at a loss to understand the explanation and excitement that’s foisted upon the San Diego Chargers because they go on late regular season run as they strive to make the playoffs. For me if you simply can’t be consistent throughout the season then it simply doesn’t augur well for any ambition that they might have as the month of December and January approaches . As it is Norv Turner’s —- team is now in the fight of their life just to win their division and perhaps gain a postseason berth in the playoffs as a wild-card entrant. The division is now simply the Kansas City Chiefs to lose and as I alluded to earlier with the ineptitude being shown as to the form within the division just about anything can happen and actually has happened during the course of the season.

The NFC West has been no different as there we could well see a division winner with a sub .500 record make the playoffs. Clearly there are many fans in general, as well several team executives who feel that this is something that shows why many feel that they’re ought to be a change in the playoff format as it relates to the postseason seedings. But with there being no outwardly directly calls vocally as of yet other than the murmured rumblings for the moment the format is unlikely to change.

Steve Spagnuolo’s —- St Louis Rams appear to be in the driver’s seat with regard to the NFC West and their game against the San Francisco 49ers being a titanic matchup of two teams looking to make their bid. Guided by Sam Bradford , the Rams could be the surprise team of the playoffs as no one could’ve foreseen the strides taken not only by the team but also by Bradford in his rookie season . In terms of the 49ers this has been something of a tumultuous season as from one moment to the next Mike Singletary seems to have lost control of this team . And it would appear that he can’t make up his mind as which quarterback is his best option to lead this team. Alex Smith still remains an enigma despite his five years in the league and with Troy Smith this season has simply seen him placed into his cauldron for his baptism of fire with the 49ers .

The AFC and for all of the drama that has taken place there it seems that Bill Belichick has the New England Patriots riding high and Tom Brady would appear to be now the odds on favorite this season for league MVP. Brady’s year has been an exceptional one with this high scoring offense and a plethora of offensive weapons . But if there’s a cause for concern then it has to be this young defense that has been somewhat inconsistent but then at times they give you a snap as to what they might be potentially by showing their athleticism .

The AFC South now seems to be up for grabs and it appears that the Jacksonville Jaguars may well have played themselves out of contention for the division. A week ago you’d have been hard pressed to have bet against the Jaguars but it now appears that Jim Caldwell and the Indianapolis Colts led by Peyton Manning are is in a fight to make this division theirs once again. The Houston Texans who came out of the starting gates like a stallion seems to have fallen off the track and it now looks as if Gary Kubiak’s tenure as the team’s coach could very well be coming to an abrupt end. With that type of high powered offense it’s easy to see the appetite that the analysts may well have had for the team . But offense alone simply doesn’t win games the Texans’ defense this season has been as porous as a sponge giving up points like a child gives up his or her lunch money having been bullied by an elder child. Let’s just say that the Texans have been extremely philanthropic when it comes to losing.

The Jacksonville Jaguars should they fall at this obstacle it’s hard to see how these players and in particular Jack Del Rio can look the the fans in the eye and state they tried their best. Their best has never and was never good enough , enough it was marginally above average , if that at all !

===================================================================================

==================================================================================

Now while many have made the comment that the Cleveland Browns have finally began to show some signs of life playing with a great deal of bravura it has to be said their divisional rivals the Cincinnati Bengals have been an immense disappointment . And despite the outward looking optimism shown by some team members Chad Ochocinco and Carson Palmer have shown little to suggest that they have what it takes to lead this team. The only positive to come out of this all may well have been the play of Terrell Owens who seems to have had a year that shows that he’s got a great deal to play for. Beyond that trying to salvage anything from this mess would be like shoveling manure and then suggesting that some real use can be made of it when you know that the flowers in a garden that have already blossomed.

As to what the remainder of the season portends for the NFL and these teams it remains to be seen what will transpire. But this much is certain with all of the drama that has taken place both on and off the field we do still have the intensity and the thrill of the postseason yet to avail itself to us. Make of it what you will . What thoughts if any do you have as to what you’ve witnessed this season within the NFL and what thoughts if any do you have with regard to the playoffs ?

It’s Been DC Or Bust ……………….. But In Reality It Was Always Going To Be A Complete Bust …… !

It’s Been DC Or Bust ……………….. But In Reality It Was Always Going To Be A Complete Bust …… !

You’d have thought with a coaching pedigree acquired over the course of his career a two time winning Superbowl coach such as Mike Shanahan would prove to be decisive ? But what’s now happening with the Washington Redskins now under his reign is proving to be not only embarrassing to his immediate legacy but also to the tenure of owner Daniel Snyder . Consider this, that since the end of the second tenure of their former Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs the Redskins have been a complete mess . With their season now in a complete tailspin the organization are now at a point where it seems that Shanahan feels that it’s best to bench the team’s starting quarterback Donovan McNabb in favor of his backup Rex Grossman . And if Grossman’s reintroduction proves to be unsuccessful then it’s left to John Beck . From thereon in who the hell cares because as by then one seriously doubts that there’ll be a Redskins’ fan out there interested in this team !

=======================================================================

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

=======================================================================

Slide show for your perusal .

The coach in a public statement given at the team’s headquarters in Ashburn , Virginia , Shanahan stated that he’d like to see what Grossman and third string starter John Beck has to offer the team over ‘the final three games’ of the season. If that wasn’t enough to contend with the team still has to deal with the wayward and unrepentant Albert Haynesworth and his less than productive season . The player has been benched , suspended for the remainder of the season and fined for conduct detrimental to the team. Haynesworth , however has lodged a formal complaint with NFLPA with the intent of fighting the fine. And given the details and action taken by Shanahan and his coaching staff in coming to the decision there’s a chance that the suspension could very well be rescinded by an arbitrator.

Granted at 5-8 there’s little else to suggest that the Redskins have much to fight for beyond their pride . With a season of expectation from the hiring of Mike Shanahan , his son Kyle , coaching staff and Bruce Allen as the team’s general manager it’s pretty much now safe to say that those expectations have fallen completely flat. There’s been little to suggest that the Redskins were capable of contending in the NFC East and against the division’s incumbents the Dallas Cowboys , New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles . As we all know the Cowboys’ season has faltered and with owner Jerry Jones having since fired Wade Phillips with his interim successor Jason Garrett assuming the position the Cowboys are now gauging Garrett’s tenure with a view to making the position permanent. The Eagles and Giants will meet this weekend in a game that has divisional implications as they both fight to gain a playoff berth with the winner being in the driver’s seat with regard to winning the division.

The comedic nature of what’s been happening with the Redskins doesn’t seem to have gone unnoticed with the nation’s press and furthermore the fans in the nation’s capital have to be wondering what the hell is going on ? Fedex Field in Landover, Maryland still is awash with fans for the Redskins’ home games. But that in ofitself can’t counter Shanahan’s gross mismanagement of the team and the antics we have all witnessed this season. It’s now twice that Shanahan has benched McNabb this season and what might be even more unbelievable has been the fact that the organization signed veteran quarterback to a five year $72 million deal of which $45 million was guaranteed money. That being said with the way the deal was constructed the organization does have a $3.5 million buyout clause which it appears they will actually use in releasing Donovan McNabb at the end of season. Now it’s hard to say what the future holds for McNabb given the fact this has been the most unproductive season of his veteran career. It seems improbable that there’ll be a team willing to take a chance on McNabb but no doubt given the fact that there’ll be a number of teams out there looking for some time of veteran leadership if only as a tutor to a young rookie. Something of disastrous downfall for a player who has led his former team the Philadelphia Eagles to four NFC Championship games and a Superbowl (SBXXXIX ) appearance. The saying most associated with McNabb and Eagles’ coach Andy Reid ………. “always the bridesmaid never the bride” .

Once again for Daniel Snyder it comes to a situation where he’s overpaying for talent that in reality has been something of an immense failure. From my own perspective it appears that the game has left Mike Shanahan behind and his abilities as a coach has to now come into question. Consider this, while in final years as coach of the Denver Broncos having relieved then quarterback Jake Plummer in favor of their then first round draft pick (2006) Jay Cutler the Broncos never made the playoffs and the coach’s record over that period has been a meager 22-28 including his tenure this season with the Washington Redskins . One could say that much of that malaise came down to the fact that the Broncos talent wise has been a mess and that’s most certainly been the case given what we have all witnessed this season with the team under Shanahan’s successor Josh McDaniels who has since been fired by team owner Pat Bowlen . McDaniels has been succeeded by Eric Studesville as the interim head coach and as of now the Broncos’ season still remains in an abyss .

With the regular season about to come to an end it appears that Shanahan now believes this latest maneuver to be his best option. But it’s becoming abundantly clear that Shanahan has no belief in either Haynesworth which given the present circumstances is understandable. In the case of McNabb it’s hard to see what he was trying to achieve much less do in acquiring the player to begin with as there were always risks. Fundamentally the team wasn’t that sound to begin with on either side of the ball and it’s clear that Shanahan and his coaching staff have failed to address those issues straight off the bat. Kyle Shanahan who has been given the role as the team’s offensive coordinator has produced nothing that would indicate that the Redskins offensively were good enough to compete within its own division much less the conference and the NFL as a whole. The team’s productivity can be best described as being anemic in terms of its offense. And defensively it certainly leaves a great deal to be desired . Injuries asides the Redskins simply aren’t a cohesive unit and they lack leadership both on and off the field of play.

Now with the upcoming NFL Draft it’s clear that the Washington Redskins feel that their greatest need will be a quarterback . And with the likes of Andrew Luck , Kellen Moore , Cameron Newton , Colin Kapernick amongst those who may well declare themselves eligible for the NFL it will be interesting to see the steps taken by Shanahan and his staff. And given the money that Dan Snyder has been known to have spent over the years could it be that we’re about to see another maelstrom and inane stupidity by the Redskins ? The ongoing troubles with the the organization isn’t just about the talent but also the mindset of Shanahan as a coach and whether or not the game has really passed him by. I believe that to be the case but in reality Snyder and the front office clearly believe otherwise and it’s clear that the ongoing problems there in Washington has nothing short of being a bust and it will continue to be that way for the foreseeable future !.

Free Fall …….. In The NFL It’s Seen As Mediocrity

Free Fall …….. In The NFL It’s Seen As Mediocrity …

The sad thing is that when you see the free fall from grace of an NFL team it must leave the fans wondering what all went on during that time. To put it plainly, when it comes to no longer being efficient and then losing sight of what your objectives tend to be is to see what tends to happen when there’s little leadership within that team. If you want to make a comparison then simply look at the way the government goes about its business ? From the President’s Office office through his cabinet on down to the House and Senate it’s been indecision and some rather asinine comments as to the country’s direction. Is it any wonder there’s so much partisanship across both aisles and the fact that the country no longer has any real faith in the government and its decision making ?

Press Play Or Rewind ……….

Well the NBA ___ season though not yet in full swing has given us a great deal to contend with and to discuss. Washington Wizards’ rookie point guard John Wall has already set himself apart from the rest of this season’s rookies with a grand entrance by posting a triple double in the team’s first win of the season. And if the player’s exhilirating displays are anything to go by then fans attending the Verizon Center in Washington DC will be in for a treat for much of the season.

Wizards’ coach Flip Saunders has got to be encouraged with the effort put forth by the young rookie who seems to be showing a growth and maturity far beyond his young years. And indeed the front office of the organization led by team President Ernie Grunfeld, VP of Basketball Operations Tommy Sheppard and VP of Player Personnel Milt Newton must feel a sense of justification in making Wall the number one overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft . And while there can be no denying that the team will undergo some growing pains as the team tries to acclimatize itself with the offseason changes made within the organization it has to be said that this start may well augur well for the Wizards and the faith shown in John Wall .

Now as we all know with the recent moves that took place within the Eastern Conference of the NBA wherein everything seemed to have revolved around the acquisitions of Chris Bosh and LeBron James by the Miami Heat made everything else pale into insignificance. So much so, that even with the New York Knicks acquiring Amar’e Stoudemire with Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal now finding a home with the Boston Celtics. All the fervor and furore seems to be about what happens within the conference and whether or not the Heat can seemingly led what many NBA analysts will be a ceremonial romp and anointing of the team as NBA champions .

With Gilbert Arenas due to make an imminent return it will be interesting to see how the seasoned veteran deals with his new teammate and who takes the reins of the team. And given what we know about Arenas as a player and the fact that he’s still under close scrutiny of not only the NBA hierarchy led by NBA Commissioner David Stern but also the entire front office of the Wizards’ organization. He’s now on something of a tight leash and any major transgression could see his career with the Wizards come to an abrupt end. The player has already fallen afoul with his coach this preseason having lied to him having faked an injury in a preseason game to facilitate the entry of rookie Nick Young into the game played against the Atlanta Hawks. Even with a public apology to the organization and the fans it has to be said that Arenas just doesn’t seem to have that instinct as knowing what’s right from wrong. Being armoral would appear to be the norm for the player and his mindset would appear to be if …. I screw up a less than contrite apology will suffice .

I’m under no illusion about the expectations of this team and although I can foresee them making the NBA playoffs I don’t fully expect them to challenge the likes of the Atlanta Hawks , Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls or Miami Heat for overall supremacy and dominance within the Eastern Conference. At best should they qualify from within their conference I can’t see them being any higher than a fifth or sixth seed at best . Much of the team’s fortunes this season will be dependent on how much cohesion is shown by the team and obviously upon the coaching prowess shown by Flip Saunders and his coaching staff . If they can play with any type of consistency and maintain that level throughout the season then the bye product by way of an above .500 record and the garnering of a playoff berth would be viewed as tremendous bonus by the organization.

If you thought that the bloodbath of the midterm elections were bad wherein the Tea Party essentially corralled in not only what appears to be an intransigent Republican Party that gave the Democrats an ass kicking which its leadership will long remember well into the future. It has to be said that President Barack Obama , Senator Harry Reid and House Representative and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have to be licking their wounds and perhaps now see the error of their ways ? You simply cannot expect to always govern from a position of strength without showing civility and at the same time be willing to listen to an opposing view no matter how idiotic you might think it to be. Well that’s now what seems to have happened as the President has come out and accepted the blame for his party’s disastrous showing in these elections. Consider however , what now seems to be going on within the organizations of the Dallas Cowboys , Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins ? Comedic farces simply don’t get any better than this and it would take an extremely creative writer to script something far more riveting and funnier than what we’re all now witnessing . I’d dare say that should this ever hit the big screen there’d be a plethora of Hollwood A-listers willing to take on and play the lead roles of the main characters in question ?

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones has offered his profound apologies to the team’s fans and the fact that he hadn’t envisaged things getting so out of hand . I beg to differ as this team simply wasn’t as good as advertized ! And in coach Wade Phillips , Jones possesses a coach who seems to be way out of his depth , never mind the fact that the coach himself and his coaching staff have been about as efficient as the use of a sponge would have proven to be on the Titanic . Suffice to say that Phillips couldn’t coach or find his way out of a wet paper bag ! To suggest that Phillips ought to be viewed as a lame duck coach would be something of an understatement but the longer this charade goes on the worse it becomes for the entire organization never mind the team itself. Not one of these players on the team has a sense of pride or purpose as they systematically seem to be “mailing it in” each successive week while the team’s owner continues to look like the proverbial buffoon ! I can only assume that the Cowboys’ fans will continue to attend in droves at Cowboys Stadium to witness the diatribe now being served up by team right through to the end of the season . In retrospect the Cowboys’ season is already over but I’d like to think that the Green Bay Packers can simply add another in that coffin when the two teams meet at Lambeau Field Green Bay , Wisconsin this upcoming Sunday !

I’d like to think that the farce also on display with the Minnesota Vikings will soon come to an abrupt end . But unfortunately anything that seems to involve Brett Favre seems to be prolonged and can be as painful to endure as a bad tooth ache. Suffice to say that with the fallout over the Randy Moss affair and Brad Childress’ rather innocuous explanation that the trade for the player was a mistake gives one the impression that the club has now become a legitimate asylum for the legally insane. Could this been what team owner Zygi Wilf envisaged for his team at the start of the season ? I certainly don’t think so ! But then again this is the Vikings we’re talking about and whose every move has been placed under the microscope this season as if we were all witnessing some kind of lab experiment taking place . God this petri dish just seems to be going rancid and personally I don’t think that I can stomach much more of this crap !

Well it appears that Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder for all of business prowess simply can’t hire a coach who seemingly possesses and ounce of intellect. With the recent hiring of Mike Shanahan and an entirely new coaching staff which also includes Shanahan’s son , Kyle Shanahan . It would appear that no sooner had things seem to have calmed down within the organization a full blown maelstrom seems to be back within the team’s midst. Now at the midpoint of the team’s season Mike Shanahan seems to be questioning not only the fitness of his starting quarterback Donovan McNabb but aslo the player’s skillset as it surround McNabb’s comprehension of the “two minute drill”. Not only that but Shanahan would then proffer up the comment that McNabb’s backup Rex Grossman would be better suited to lead the team in such moment’s during a game. Given Grossman’s lack of dexterity having replaced McNabb in the waning moments of team’s game against the Detroit Lions and their subsequent loss 37-25 .I’ve got to ask myself what the hell was it that Shanahan and his son were watching ?
