Sputtering along and granted, it’s still early days yet , but the teams will be soon set in their mode , and the NBA season will truly have kicked into gear once we enter the Christmas week with a slew of game encapsulating that period from the 22nd of December though to the 29th of December , 2012. The reigning NBA champions , the Miami Heat , somehow inexplicably lost to the lowly and some might say the inept Washington Wizards (2-13). In garnering their second victory of the season, in defeating the Heat 105-101 at the Verizon Center , in Washington , DC this past Tuesday , 4th December . It should not be viewed as a complete shock given the somewhat complacent manner of this Heat team as of late .

Wizards’ coach Randy Wittman and his coaching staff will have their work cut out for them over the course of this season. Given the infrequency of their wins and their poor showing in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference , one has to wonder whether or not the fans will have to endure a year of complete ineptitude from the players on the roster . With a truncated season for the 2011-12 season , the fans had were imbued in having to witness the Charlotte Bobcats finish the season with a 7-59 in what was at the time , a reduced schedule from the customary eighty-two games , to sixty-six games. The common feeling around the league amongst the NBA pundits and fans alike , is that the Washington Wizards will be a seriously challenger to the Bobcats’ season of ineptitude .

The big story, in the infancy of this NBA season , has been the rise of the New York Knicks(13-4) and their flying start right out of the gate , which has seen this Mike Woodson coached team seated atop of the Atlantic Division , with the franchise also holding the best record in the Eastern Conference , by a mere 0.15 percentage points over the Miami Heat (12-4) . There now seems to be “a major buzz” about the New York Knicks this season , as Madison Square Gardens is packed to the rafters, with eager Knicks’ fans looking to see how this Carmelo Anthony , led team will seek to acquit themselves against an opponent . So far , so good , with Anthony being ably assisted by seasoned veterans Marcus Camby , Rasheed Wallace , Jason Kidd , and Kurt Thomas . At some point in the Knicks’ season , these very same veterans will begin to ache , as their aging bones will being to feel the toll of an arduous eighty-two game schedule . It would be remiss to suggest that will be the only issue to trouble the Knicks over the course of the season . Compounding this all , may well be how the team seeks to use Amare` Stoudemire , as the player has been plagued by injuries in the infancy of the Knicks’ sojourn. Coming off the bench , would provide the Knicks with a good backup to what is many ways is beginning to look somewhat of a capable bench , but the team would need to have a vested interest in seeing Stoudemire adopt this new-found role, without protest . Something, that I am not so sure that the player might willingly accept without some future guarantee from Woodson and GM Glen Grunwald that they are amenable to see him return to a starting role for the franchise .

The Knicks face a stern test when they are scheduled to meet the Miami Heat in a Eastern Conference matchup this Thursday, at the Heat’s Miami venue , the AA Arena , in Miami , Florida. Some might see this as something of a precursor to a possible Conference Finals’ series . Both teams come with highly potent offenses , but the Heat , has that added advantage of being a more coherent defensive unit overall . And with the Miami Heat still “ smarting” after their embarrassing loss , suffered at the hands of the Washington Wizards. As Carmelo Anthony goes , then so does this Knicks’ team , and it will be incumbent Anthony’s leadership qualities to take the Knicks to their desired destination , and that is a NBA title and raising the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

While the New York Knicks have been on the move , their new neighborhood crosstown rivals the Brooklyn Nets (11-6) have made themselves heard around the league . Head coach, Avery Johnson knows that with having two prominent All Stars in his roster lineup , great things will be expected from Deron Williams , Joe Johnson and the team at large . Newly housed in their home venue the Barclaycard Center in Brooklyn . There’s a feeling that the NBA needs a budding rivalry in the nation’s largest ad market that would rival, that of the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers during their heyday. However, a rivalry of that magnitude would mean these two teams being credible and perennial contenders for the NBA title . In reality , would anyone now be prepared to state that the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks are bonafide candidates for an NBA championship ? ? The Nets are coming off a hard fought 117-111 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder . It will be games such as this that the Nets will have come big in , in order to be viewed as viable contenders.

At 14-4 , the San Antonio Spurs have the best record in the Western Conference but statistically in terms of percentage points the Memphis Grizzlies (13-3) are viewed as the team with the better record. With both of these teams in the Southwest Division , a budding rivalry now seems to be in the making , and there seems to be no love lost , between the two sets of fans , in showing their allegiance to their respective teams. Gregg Popovich , of the Spurs and his opposite number , Lionel Hollins of the Grizzlies , are keenly aware of the expectations from both of their teams. And while Popovich has that legacy of success with the franchise , Hollins is seeking to establish a foundation upon which his team can build for the future. . And the Grizzlies have proven to be formidable this season , having established a rhythm , and along the way defeating the Miami Heat , Los Angeles Lakers , Denver Nuggets , Houston Rockets , Oklahoma City Thunder and the New York Knicks . The Eastern Conference may well have the balance of power but within the Western Conference , it is here where the fans get to see a high-caliber of basketball being played and that is without deference to the West’s rivals in the East.

In light of David Stern’s idiocy, in rendering a fine of $250,000 on the San Antonio Spurs after Gregg Popovich’s decision, in not suiting up four of his regular season starters for a game against the Miami Heat , the decision speaks volumes of the commissioner’s autocratic rule ! Now in light of that fact , I find it somewhat asinine that the NBA Commissioner can be so intransigent and at times, act as petulant as a child , merely because he’s not the center of attention, with regard to matters concerning the NBA not involving the players. Stern has in essence, become a “ publicity seeking whore” of the highest order ! In doing so glosses over many of the acute and dire issues that still currently affects the NBA , its brand and financial viability. Furthermore , he has never sought to have the fans’ best interests at heart , more often than not , siding with the league hierarchy and owners on issues that directly and indirectly , affects the fans . And it now appears , that the commissioner will do whatever it takes, to coerce the city of Sacramento to make a grave decision that will affect that municipality long-term , as it seeks to resolve a long-standing issue as to how best to retain that city’s NBA franchise , the Sacramento Kings .

Kobe Bryant calls David Stern’s idea ‘stupid’

By Tim McGarry USA Today

NBA Commissioner David Stern recently floated a proposal to restrict NBA players over the age of 23 from participating in the Olympics. Kobe is not a fan of the idea.

From ESPN:

“It’s a stupid idea,” Bryant told local news reporters at the reception to welcome them to Manchester in advance of Thursday night’s exhibition game against Team Great Britain. “It should be a (player’s) choice.”

Asked how much he and his Team USA teammates have talked about Stern’s proposal since getting together in Las Vegas on July 5, Bryant said: “Our discussion is this: Basically, it’s just a dumb idea and we (discuss) it that way.”

Stern’s proposal, similar to the system currently in place for Olympic men’s soccer, would establish an age cap and allow teams three over-age players.

Meanwhile, the FIBA World Championship would be open to all other NBA players. Unlike the Olympics, NBA owners would receive a share of the revenue when their players participate in the FIBA World Championship. Kobe’s response:

When asked if he understands the concerns of NBA owners, Bryant scoffed, saying such reservations are motivated by owners merely wanting “to protect their investments.”

If the proposal passes, 2012 could be the last time the NBA’s top talent comes together to represent the USA in the Olympics.

The ball’s in your court, Mr. Stern.

The front office of the Sacramento Kings have long-sought a replacement for the archaic and run-down Power Balance Arena( Pavilion) in downtown Sacramento. But at no time have owners , Joe and Gavin Maloof , expressed any wish to either facilitate their assistance in aiding financially, the city in such a project. Instead , the Maloofs have tried to suggest that the city’s council have proven to be intransigent , and likewise the municipality’s mayor, former NBA star , Kevin Johnson , has expressed his doubts, that the Maloofs have dealt with his executives and its residents honestly , concerning the franchise’s desires to remain within the city of Sacramento . The Kings are indeed a large part of the Maloofs’ business interests , but the franchise in recent years, because of its lack of competitiveness and profitability has become something of a financial drain on the family , not that other parts of the Joe and Gavin’s business concerns have fared that well, in what has been a dour economic climate all-round . Yet , there has been the belief, that the NBA franchise has been mismanaged and more often than not, completely neglected by the owners as well as by the senior executives entrusted with the day-to-day care in running the operations of the Sacramento Kings . And I think that we can all agree that this episode will not end nicely for the city of Sacramento if they seek undertake the use of public and private funds to assist a group of multimillionaires to aid them in building a venue for their uncompetitive and unprofitable sport’s franchise . Things like this never end nicely , especially in wake of the city of Sacramento’s ongoing financial budgetary crisis but yet they ever uninformed and anally retentive fans of the Kings believe it to be a good thing to undertake such an endeavor . I’ll say this once , and once only , ” you idiots deserve what you get at the end of the day , because you are pretty much , devoid of any real intelligence ” !

David Stern talks out of both sides of his mouth, and he is and has disingenuous to a fault , that , he now makes some of the most corrupt and deceitful politicians to be found up on Capitol Hill, seem like young acolytes or choirboys . Hold it for one moment , why is that priest raising his cassock and asking that young boy to kneel ? Stern ”talks a good talk” , but rarely does he ” walk the walk”, and realize what is happening in the real world . Here is an individual who is the league hierarchy’s chief executive earning in excess of $20 million a year , which is on par with some of the highest paid players in the game , but yet, he had the audacity to seek concessions from the union ( NBPA ) , without seeking from the team owners and their front office executives any initiative , where they would also seek to pare down their capricious spending when it came to team payroll and other ostentatious spending . When I last looked placing ornate gold leaf hand rails in an executive sky-box suite did not make an NBA franchise a great deal more competitive ! But who am I to question how the NBA conducts its business ? I know I am a paying fan who’s now being placed over a barrel while Stern places a projectile in my rectum for good measure in terms of product that’s now being placed on the NBA basketball courts around the league . And can someone explain to me , why it is the NBA has a “soft salary cap “ ( this season $58.044 million) when so many of the teams in the league refuse to adhere to it , as best they can ? But yet, you now have Dallas Mavericks’ , owner , Mark Cuban , now complaining as to the fact that his franchise has been forced to pay in excess of $73 million over the past three years , because of this league mandated rule . . Hey , Mark, you paid for your championship , now how about you , inspiring the front office to go about the business of rebuilding that franchise and turning it into a championship caliber team , and stop with your f##king bitching and whining !

It seems even with the hiring of Mike D’Antoni , to succeed the recently fired Mike Brown , things are still not yet back on an even keel for the Los Angeles . An ailing Steve Nash , fit or not , I don’t believe will be any of any great benefit to a team that has been errant and lackluster , disinterested in playing the games , albeit that they are being handsomely rewarded . To my mind , D’Antoni’s free-flowing style of coaching and what he demands of his players , is not the game I feel that the Lakers are uniquely attuned to ! A fit Nash, or not , the point guard is not the player he was four years ago , six years ago , let alone his recent form with the Dallas Mavericks .

Currently playing sub .500 basketball (9-10 [.474]) , to suggest that the team is struggling Los Angeles Lakers , as they try to adapt to D’Antoni’s style of play , is to witness a sense of insecurity from these players . Kobe Bryant, may well have joined a select group of players to have scored 30,000 points over the course of their careers , but at the end of the day the fans are not going to be in the least bit concerned about Bryant’s latest achievement , if the Lakers fail to make the postseason. The achievements of Kobe Bryant have already cemented his legacy, as a Future Hall of Fame inductee . Yet , that is for the future , it is the immediacy of here and now , that concerns the Lakers’ fans the most . A recent 103-87 victory over the New Orleans Hornets , for the moment , gives the Lakers a boost of confidence , but up next , they face the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Friday night game to be played at the Chesapeake Energy Center, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma . It’s pretty safe to suggest that Kevin Durant , Russell Westbrook , Kevin Martin and Serge Ibaka will be looking to inflict even more pain upon the beleaguered Lakers . Your thoughts , on this all ?

.

Accentuate the positives , but also eliminate the negatives . Well I guess, that’s how you could adjudge the Orlando Magic’s off-season , in light of the upheaval that took place within the organization . Gone are , former head coach , Stan Van Gundy , GM , Otis Smith , and the team’s former celebrated center , Dwight Howard , who now finds himself in “Tinseltown” playing alongside , Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers . Replacing Van Gundy , is first-time head coach, Jacque Vaughn , with Rob Hennigan , being promoted from within organization to succeed Otis Smith . Overseeing this all was the Magic’s CEO Alec Martins , who, himself was asked to take over the CEO role, by owner , Rich De Vos , after De Vos’ son-in-law , Rob Vanderweide , stepped down to seek outside business opportunities. I guess that was De Vos’ cordial way , of telling Rob , ” go fuck yourself and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out , after you , Smith and Van Gundy created all of this goddamn drama “.

The departure of Howard was not surprising , only the fact that it took so damn long , given the player’s animated and often petulant behavior . Good riddance to a self-absorbed asshole such as Dwight Howard ! Great player , when he sees the need to be , but he has never been that much of a leader , or a great motivator to begin with . And one, but can only hope that with the retirement of Kobe Bryant , Howard can at least show that he is prepared to assume the role of a leader, on what may well be viewed as a championship caliber team . But given the Lakers’ recent penchant for drama , I am not so sure that the Los Angeles Lakers will returning to an NBA Finals anytime soon , and the same has to be said for the Orlando Magic. The “ window” of opportunity for the Lakers is almost closed , and even with heralded arrival of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, only a fool would even consider them to be a clear-cut favorite to come out of the Western Conference as champions . Orlando , for its apart starts afresh , with their rookie head coach, the acquiring of a few free agents , holdovers from last season and the players obtained in the NBA Draft .

The Magic’s most experienced players , determined by their years in the NBA are Al Harrington , Hedo Turkoglu , and Jameer Nelson. However, in terms of determining the team’s best player, were you to adjudge it on scoring , then , Arron Afflalo would have to be deemed to have assumed that role . Coming off an away game 81-87 loss to the Utah Jazz , the Magic (7-11) now find themselves 5.5 games adrift of the Miami Heat (12-5) within the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference . And clearly, as Jacque Vaughn tries to find his footing as a rookie coach , then so too, will this Magic team as they look to make some headway this season . Are they capable of making the playoffs ? Who can say , at this juncture , because they have nothing to lose if they are not at least prepared to try. And one of the continued adversities for the Orlando Magic as a franchise , is that having built a relativity new venue which is less than three years old , is the very fact that now , in terms of attendance , the teams has one of the lowest attendance rates in all of the NBA . And this certainly doesn’t bode well from a financial standpoint for the organization or the ambitions of executives envisaged with the task of making this brand a profitable concern. Lack of a real fan-base , a somewhat inconsistent and uncompetitive team, and there you have a recipe for disaster . Yet these are the things that David Stern refuses to address , but yet he has the audacity to rebuke well-respected coaches and the organizations they represent for the most innocuous of things. Somehow not only the commissioner trying to write a check that even he can’t cash , in spite of his annual salary , but so too are a number of franchises around the NBA . And you wonder why at times why the fans become disengaged with the brand ?

Plainly put, it’s me mentality that now exists within the game and how it’s being sold as a consumer product to the fans and public alike . Within the NBA it is no longer about the teams but more about the league’s superstars , their agents and the entourage that simply makes sure that their profile is always kept high. Unfortunately, this is the road that the league chose to go down and now there is no turning back . !

Over the past eight years do you believe that the fans’ best interests have been served by some of the decisions made by the NBA Commissioner , David Stern ? And do you believe that his successor , Adam Silver , the current Deputy Commissioner , will bring about some much-needed changes to the league , and how it essentially operates as a business entity , as well as, from what we see competitively happening on the courts today ? Simply leave a comment as you see fit .

Heads Up It’s Now Open Season On The Coaching Fraternity In The NBA

By tophatal …….

I don’t know about you but the firing of Flip Saunders simply didn’t set off any alarm bells in terms of the moribund season now being had by the Washington Wizards ! To my mind the coach was never really that good to begin with and the brand of basketball and the coaching within the NBA has truly been on the decline over the past five years . Far too much hype the egos of the players never mind the very fact that it would appear that the general managers are not in the firing line when things start to spiral out of control for an NBA franchise .

Slide show for your perusal .

Ever since Ted Leonsis assumed control of the Wizards from the team’s late owner Abe Pollin the franchise has been embroiled in controversy . So much so , that in 2010 former players Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton were at the center of a fracas that involved gun play at the team’s headquarters at the Verizon Center in Washington , DC. That melee` brought in a tough stance and edict from the league hierarchy as it relates to gambling but also players carrying unlicensed firearms on league property . Both players were suspended and fined monetarily by David Stern .

As many of you are no doubt aware during Pollin’s reign as the franchise’s owner he brought in Michael Jordan as the team’s general manager . The former NBA great whose front office experience was limited at best , saw fit to to take an enormous gamble on drafting Kwame Brown as the number one overall draft pick in the 2001 NBA Draft . That draft had a litany of players who would go on to make considerable names for themselves within the league. Players drafted that year included Shane Battier , Tyson Chandler , Pau Gasol , Zach Randolph and Tony Parker to name but a few within this draft.

Now while everyone simply refers back to the year when Sam Bowie was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 NBA Draft . And the ramifications that bore the upswing in the fortunes of the Chicago Bulls and the success in subsequent years for the franchise.

Kwame Brown was drafted straight out of high school and whether not Jordan’s musings that led to the decision was based on the player’s potential , his career has never taken off within the NBA . The center has simply become a journey-man in the league whose latest stop now has him playing for the Golden State Warriors , another franchise whose fortunes this season seems to have taken a turn for the worst. .

As to the Washington Wizards’ own plight this season with a record of 2-15 within the Eastern Conference that now finds the team rooted firmly at the bottom of the Southeast Division with nowhere to go but up.

When drafted …… John Wall , having been taken number one overall was seen as the future face of the Wizards’ franchise with a view to taking the next step up in terms of being competitive franchise . The Wizards’ front office and ownership group now must be mulling how best to extricate themselves from the mess that the franchise now finds itself in . With Randy Wittman having succeeded Flip Saunders , a decision made by GM Ernie Grunfeld , it remains to be seen whether not the newly installed coach along with his assistant coaching staff led by former player …. Sam Cassell can set about turning around the fortunes of the Wizards . The roster itself cannot be deemed as being overly experienced with only five players having 4 years or more of playing time in the NBA .

With seasoned veterans such as Andre Blatche , Rashard Lewis , Maurice Evans , Roger Mason Jr and Ronny Turiaf . The question that most might now ask is whether not these veterans are prepared to show the younger players what it takes to become a success within the NBA . Certainly the likes of Wall , Nick Young , Trevor Booker and Jordan Crawford must be willing to learn , albeit that John Wall is still to be seen as the face of the franchise and de-facto leader on the basketball court . My own feelings concerning the Washington Wizards has been that this organization has not been of relevance at anytime during its existence in the aftermath of its name chance and most definitely with the rather asinine thought by Michael Jordan that successive franchise could be built around Kwame Brown ! Would you have made the choice in question of drafting the player number one overall in the 2001 NBA Draft ? Especially when there were far more talented players to be had and most definitely a more prudent choice could have been made by the front office executive at the time .

I don’t know about you but the free fall of the Detroit Pistons over the last few years has been truly astounding . I know that the franchise has gone through an ownership change with the club now in the hands of wealthy billionaire venture capitalist Tom Gores . The financier having bought the team as well its holding company Palace & Sports Entertainment from the Davidson family due to the fact didn’t it was the Davidson family’s wish not to be burdened with the estate taxes due at the demise of former owner Bill Davidson .

Now while all of this is to be commended it would appear that GM Joe Dumars with his Hall of Fame …. career in the NBA now faces an uphill task in resurrecting the fortunes of this franchise. Out has gone one of the club’s most beloved players in recent years with the departure of Richard Hamilton to the Chicago Bulls . And with a team that now seems to be built around the talents of Ben Gordon and Rodney Stuckey with the erstwhile veteran Ben Wallace now as a mainstay , it is hard to fathom how Lawrence Frank as the coach , can simply get this group to actually play with any real resolve .

The lowly Detroit Pistons with a 4-15 ….. record sits firmly rooted at the bottom of the Central Division and conference wise their mark is only slightly better than that of the Washington Wizards (3-15) and the Charlotte Bobcats (3-16) . I do not believe that there is much more that can actually be said about the lowly Wizards and in the case of the Michael Jordan owned Bobcats , it is my belief that their fans simply turn up at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte , North Carolina , merely to get a glimpse of the former NBA great ! Truth be told whatever it is that is being served up by coach Paul Silas and his coaching staff by this team cannot be faintly called an NBA brand of basketball !

The Charlotte Bobcats in their last 10 games are a languid 1-9 and at this juncture it would be a safe bet to suggest say that they are already completely out of the playoff picture for this season and that is with the NBA calendar already quarter of the way through its schedule . Suffice to say , that at some point GM Rod Higgins , Jordan , himself , and President & CEO Fred Whitfield will have to begin to assess the coaching staff as well as this team.

The roster led by D J. Augustin , Kemba Walker , Desagana Diop , Gerald Henderson and Corey Maggette have offered little of comfort with with the Bobcats’ fans might even grasp at straws to believe that this team is evenly faintly competitive . And with the Charlotte Bobcats due to face the high flying Philadelphia 76ers (12-6) in their next scheduled game it will be interesting to see what Paul Silas and his players will be able to bring to the table . If nothing else the worst that could happen is that the team continues its losing streak at best they notch up another win to add to their already embarrassing tally for the season.

Now with Kevin Love having resigned with the Minnesota Timberwolves you would have to believe that the franchise’s future for now is pretty much in safe hands . Mr “Double Double” as I now tend to refer to the player is one of the most consistent players in the league today . And each night he simply guarantees to put up big numbers no matter who the opponent might happen to be . Suffice to say that the front office led by GM Dave Kahn knows that without having signed the power forward to a contract extension to a new contract ______ this would have set off an auction for the player had he sought free agency . There’s no doubt in my mind that the player is best power forward in the league at present .

With the addition of Spanish star Ricky Rubio this year , it has to be said that there seems to be a robust way with which this team goes about its trade . Unfortunately that simply isn’t borne out in their (7-10) record within the Northwest Division of the Western Conference . Inasmuch as I admire Rick Adelman as an NBA head coach with a distinguished record , it is my belief that he is not the right candidate to be coaching this young team ! A patron (chappy81) within this forum recently wrote an article in which he detailed why it is that the Timberwolves are one of the more entertaining teams within the NBA this season . That’s all well and good , consistency and winning is not something that has been going hand in hand with the Minnesota Timberwolves over the course their season . Plainly put , if you’re simply in awe of a few stars playing basketball rather than seeing them actually accomplish something tangible on the field of play , then you had better have something to back up the premise of your argument . In this case I don’t believe my good friend has laid the groundwork for that debate at all ! .

If the Minnesota Timberwolves are as ambitious their fans believe them to be is the very fact that there is a common belief that this season team is capable of claiming a playoff berth . Persoanally , I believe that Adelman’s players are still a long way of from being a playoff claiber franchise , especially within the always competitive …… Western Conference . I may well be surprised by season’s end concerning the plight of the Timberwolves but I doubt it !

In these of economic plight I don’t know that the NBA’s franchise owners as such , have a great a deal to be sorrowful about . David Stern has done his very best to make sure that they are well taken care of with at least twenty four teams over the past two seasons receiving in excess of $756 million by way of league mandated bailout . Never let it be said that the NBA hierarchy hasn’t followed in the negligent steps we have seen over the course of this administration simply bailing out any weeping and whining corporation in the light of their mismanagement . And it is becoming abundantly clear that these infantile owners were amenable to the gift from the commissioner . They along with the general managers have been ostentatious with their spending , so much so even with their pleading of poverty from the owners has become cannon fodder for the ridicule that is justifiably directed towards them as well as the NBPA (union) .

A recent article in Thursday’s edition of USA Today which was also Forbes Magazine article in highlighted how the value of several NBA franchises had risen faster than the rate of inflation and wherein the owners of those franchises have profited greatly from these new valuations . The Los Angeles Lakers is now said to be the most valuable NBA franchise with an estimated worth of $900 million , having now passed the New York Knicks whose parent company MSG Entertainment is wholly owned by the Dolan family under the leadership of James Dolan . However, while the Lakers is said to be the most valuable it is in fact the Knicks who just happens to be the most profitable of the NBA’s 30 teams. And given the present fortunes of the franchise whose 7-11 record and most recently embarrassing home 97-91 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers doesn’t belie a team that is playing …. sub-par basketball . It may well be that somehow Mike D’Antoni’s players may well eke out enough wins to garner a playoff berth but I seriously doubt that they will be good enough to go deep into the NBA postseason ! Your thoughts ?

In The Words Of Herm Edwards ……..” You Play The Game To Win” ..

In The Words of Herm Edwards …..”You Play The Game To Win ” …….

By tophatal ……..

Words to live by ……..” you play the game to win ” . At present those words may well be lost upon both the .LSU Tigers and Washington Wizards . In the case of the Tigers who played hosts to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the All State BCS national championship game . All was on the line for the unbeaten LSU Tigers . And for coach Les Miles he was looking to win his second national title as the program’s coach. Instead what the fans in attendance at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana , were served up was a game that failed to live up to expectations .

Having met earlier on during the collegiate season wherein the two teams met the fans were given an eyesore in terms of 9-6 game that may well have had many wondering were these really the two best collegiate football programs in the nation at the FBS level ? Though it was an event that pitted two teams that gave us a defensive show but in retrospect perhaps that may well have been a harbinger of things to come. So much was expected of Alabama and LSU last night that the showcased event fell so far short of expectations. Instead what we were all subjected was as annihilation of the Tigers 21-0 that had me wondering why all the fuss ? And this has to be something that the BCS and in particular the SEC wanted to avoid , a game that was simply an abomination to watch in terms of the lack of competitiveness shown by Les Miles’ team .

Nick Saban and his team comes away with the BCS national crown but some serious doubts as to who just might be the best team in the country . Let’s just say that Oklahoma State (Cowboys) after their thrilling defeat (41-38) of Stanford (Cardinals) might just have enough credence to challenge right of Alabama to be declared the national champions. To put it politely it’s this sort of idiocy within the BCS system that makes this whole charade such a damn joke ! The Associated Press (AP) may well now decide upon one of two things …….. either they will declare Oklahoma State their national champion or make the formal announcement that they designate Alabama and coach Mike Gundy’s …. team co-joint national champions . Is this what the BCS and collegiate football has come to ______ because a bunch of money hungry bastards simply don’t want to upset the ” gravy train” ?

From my own perspective the BCS system has cultivated an environment of wantoned corruption and greed , wherein the major conferences , university presidents and athletics’ directors are simply bereft of any sense of respectability , much less morals ! And don’t for one minute be fooled by the idiocy that the NCAA and its president Mark Emmert would like to see things drastically change . Not while the likes of CBS Sports , ABC/ESPN , NBC , Fox and various affiliates around the country literally pay out ” billions of dollars” each year for the privilege of serving up what now appears to be a rather pedantic product ! Emmert says all of the right things but he has moved at a snail’s pace to bring about any real solid changes . It has also been the same way in the NCAA’s handling of programs who have simply flouted their regulations . Dealing with collegiate athletics’ governing body is akin to dealing with the Neanderthal and archaic machinery that just happens to representative of the federal government and its agencies ! Too cumbersome to deal with and not an ounce of frigging intelligence to be found anywhere those domains !

It may well be that Alabama will be declared the national champions with the final collegiate rankings as such denoting that . But as of now the percolating controversy will continue unabated . So make of it what you will . My thought however is , if LSU wanted to parlay their season into something truly spectacular then last night’s showing simply sustained what everyone must now be possibly be thinking . The team was vastly over-rated and their victory over Alabama earlier in the season simply laid the groundwork for Crimson Tide to seek its ultimate revenge .

If Jared Sullinger is said to be the best player in college football then it’s becoming abundantly clear that the NBA’s …. Washington Wizards are intent in making a play for the Ohio State Buckeyes’ player . Win-less with an 0-8 record Flip Saunders’ …… team are doing their leveled best to make the Indianapolis Colts’ season within the NFL seem like an afterthought . I know that the Colts were extremely bad in a number of facets of the game but within the NBA the Wizards just seem to be taking it to a whole new level . They are at the bottom or close to the bottom in so many statistical categories that it is becoming mind boggling to watch the team play .

I am so sure that no one within the Wizards’ front office expected such ineptitude to the start of their season . Ernie Grunfeld alongside team owner Ted Leonsis must now be wishing that the NBA lockout had not been laid to rest with a new collective bargaining agreement in tow. Instead the fans in attendance for the team’s home games have had to endure a brutal display of absolutely god damn awful basketball . John Wall the organization’s best player and the alleged face of the franchise has tried his best to lead the team by example but it is abundantly clear that things just aren’t working .

We have already witnessed the first coaching casualty of the season with Paul Westphal having been fired by the Sacramento Kings front office after that team’s poor start to their season and the rumblings of dissension and a failure of the coach to communicate with the players on the team , most notably with DeMarcus Cousins . The former Kentucky Wildcat has become the pariah for which if all else fails , you simply have to look no further than the player’s work ethic and demeanor . It certainly hasn’t helped that if anything , he was coddled and given so much latitude with regard to his behavior both on and off the court whilst attending Kentucky . But then again whoever said that coach John Calipari , other than himself has said that he has his players’ best interests at heart ? Wherever Calipari seems to have coached during his collegiate and NBA career there seems to have some form of controversy that has reared its ugly head .

If Geoff Petrie was so quick to pull the trigger on Westphal then it now looks as if Saunders’ days with the Washington Wizards could very well be numbered . Ernie Grunfeld has to be closely weighing up the situation before he makes a decision because there’s no way that he and the other front office executives much less the fans will continue tolerate such mediocre displays by the team . !

In the Washington Wizards’ most recent game ( 93-72 loss) they were summarily taken behind the woodshed to have their asses soundly beaten by Kevin Love and the high flying Minnesota Timberwolves . Strangely enough who knew that this season we would be talking about the Timberwolves as being one of the surprise teams of the season ? Although I hadn’t picked the team to struggle I did however believe that they would still be a work in progress ! Of the teams which I felt would be having a horrid time because of their apparent lack of moves I truly believed that the Houston Rockets would somehow be struggling . Indeed they have , but at the same time with the season a mere nine games into its truncated schedule it’s still early days yet !

Now inasmuch I would like to see the Washington Wizards get out of their rut given the performances I have witnessed from the team I don’t think that it would be remiss to suggest they might seriously be in with a chance of being bearing on down the Philadelphia 76ers’ record of 9-73 or quite possibly the New Jersey Nets’ 10-72 in recent years . Kind of makes you wish that would all come about merely so that they team can possibly make run at Jared Sullinger dependent upon the NBA Draft Lottery scenario . Your thoughts ?

Kind of makes you wish that would all come about merely so that they team can possibly make run at Jared Sullinger dependent upon the NBA Draft Lottery scenario . Your thoughts ? Truncated season or not, the Washington Wizards seem to heading towards complete mediocrity as far as this season goes . Flip Saunders couldn’t bribe this team into obtaining a win if the prize was a night of unbridled sex with a group of high classed escorts .

In light of what you may or may not have witnessed with regard to the BCS national championship game do you believe that Alabama should be rightfully anointed the national champion ? It’s NCAA Or Bust ………….. Bull Dogs or U Conn Huskies ?

Well tonight Brad Stevens and his Butler Bull Dogs will get a second consecutive bite of the cherry looking to be crowned the national champions in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament . In this matchup they will face off against the U Conn Huskies and perhaps the player of the tournament without a doubt in Kemba Walker ! The Huskies will have that wily veteran as coach , Jim Calhoun who’ll be looking to win his third national title overall and join a select number of coaches who’ve won multiple NCAA titles .

Reliant Stadium in Houston , Texas, will be rocking as throngs of fans in support of both teams will have this venue packed to the rafters and with there being primetime national television coverage coming courtesy of CBS the night is bound to be riveting and an exciting spectacle to watch or participate in. Both teams have proved their worth in making it this far as has been witnessed in the routes taken in them getting to the Finals . And as impressive as both teams have been , it goes without saying that there are no doubt a number of us who hadn’t expected U Conn much less Butler making it this far . I for one thought that Butler’s surprise run in last year’s tournament would be just a one off ! And given the fact that they’d lost their best player in Gordon Hayward to the NBA who’d have guessed that they’d make such a quick return to the Final Four much less the championship game , itself ?

Experience says that that the U Conn Huskies ought to prevail and given that they’ve a coaching staff led by Calhoun one could say that they have a distinct advantage . Never mind the depth and talent laden roster of this Huskies’ team . At the same it’d be naive to even dare to underestimate the resolve of this Bull Dogs’ team and the very fact that different players on the roster have repeatedly stepped up to the plate and have done what has been asked of them by Brad Stevens and his coaching staff , and that’s to win by playing stifling defense , be quick in transition as and when needed. This game I believe , the deference given to Walker as a player and whether or not Stevens will have a way of negating the player’s power and leadership qualities . As Walkers goes , then so do the U Conn Huskies as a team , albeit that he’s complemented by the play of Jeremy Lamb , Alex Oriahki and in particular Shabazz Napier .

Brad Stevens’ team are no slouches themselves given their surprise upset (71-70) of Jamie Dixon’s —– Pitt Panthers who if anything were thought to have the better team . But as they say first impressions aren’t necessarily to be taken for what they’re worth as has been witnessed by Butler’s improbable run throughout this tournament . It has been players such as Shelvin Mack , Matt Howard , Andrew Smith , Shawn Vanzant , Khyle Marshall and Ronald Nored who’ve made their presence felt during this tournament and throughout the Bull Dogs’ season .

To my mind this NCAA Tournament has been one of the more exciting ones in recent memory and even if there have been doubters as to the legitimacy of some of the participants , there’s no denying there’s more excitement to be had and witnessed here than watching the idiocy we’re told is the BCS System for determining a national champion in football ! Which to my mind is the biggest fu_king fraud going on within collegiate sports beyond the idiocy of the NCAA’s reluctance to punish certain programs who’ve knowingly transgressed their mandated rules . Who the hell actually now takes the NCAA seriously to begin with ? Only a damn idiot would still have the presence of mind to believe that they stand for what’s best in collegiate athletics !

There’s a great deal to be said about the tournament and the players we’ve had the pleasure of seeing in this NCAA Tournament. And while Kemba Walker has stood out , towering over this tournament with his play, leadership qualities and doubted skills . I wonder if those skills in particular will translate into success at the next level within the NBA ? There’s often talk that certain players are can’t miss opportunities players once they enter the NBA but to my mind that is predicated upon the environment and the team that a player finds themselves in ! I mean one merely has to look at the struggles of John Wall this season with the Washington Wizards to see what can happen . And though we’ve seen the outstanding season now being had by the Clippers’ Blake Griffin . One simply has to remember that he had a year off from the game having spent his initial rookie season sidelined by injury. Who’s to say we’d have seen that explosiveness now being witnessed had he played for the Clippers last season ? As they say ……”buyer beware ” !

I’m not about to suggest that the same fate that has befallen John Wall awaits Kember Walker should he be taken as to consensus number one pick in the 2011 NBA Draft but given what I’ve seen of teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers , Minnesota Timberwolves , Sacramento Kings , Toronto Raptors and New Jersey Nets in the NBA Standings I’m liable to believe that Walker’s impact mightn’t be that immediate given those teams’ performances over the course of this season. God knows the gap between the elite teams and those who cling to the bottom rung is like a crevasse that’s a mile deep or wide ! .

Seven Years In Tibet Is An Eternity Watching The Cavaliers …… Well That’s Too
Painful A Thought To Have To Endure ………………………

So the Cleveland Cavaliers do know how to win after all ? Finally after 26 attempts they were able to overcome the Los Angeles Clippers . I’m sorry to say this but when the Clippers are in town and they essentially lay down like a wounded dog having been kicked to the ground I can only surmise that Vinny Del Negro’s —- team have been watching the films of Michael Vick’s former pets . Act like a wounded dog and you’ll be treated no better than a wounding dog that no one actually cares for ! And such has been the thoughts by the fans in general about the Los Angeles Clippers over the years.

Twenty six games and as they say legends are made as the fans had the ignominy of seeing the Cavaliers become the team that had the worse losing record in terms of consecutive losses in all of professional sports. Cavaliers’ coach Byron Scott had to have been happy with this outcome and at the same time GM Chris Grant and team owner Dan Gilbert can feel some respite after all of the losing . Clearly however this team is a long way off from where they need to be . They at present have the worse record in the NBA and sit at the bottom of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference .

The game played at the Quicken Loans Arena
was all that could be expected from two teams literally fighting for their survival within the league. J J Hickson and Antawn Jamison would lead the charge for the team as the eked out a narrow victory over their opponents from the Western Conference . I’m sorry but when you have two teams that essentially aren’t going anywhere within the NBA this season you have to wonder about the state of the game and the product that David Stern is trying to get fans around the globe to enjoy.

Now Cavaliers’ fans can take heart in knowing that their team finally showed some heart but at the same it has me wondering can this team avoid losing 60 games this season ? I don’t know that they can but I do believe that they will end up with the worse record in the league !

As to the fate of the Clippers with the ownership led by Donald Sterling has never been competitive in nature nor has he the desire to win. And it certainly hasn’t helped that the team has to share the same venue as the Los Angeles Lakers . And given the Lakers’ history and legacy the Clippers have been left in their wake and rear view mirror. This Clippers’ team has been way too inconsistent for their own good this season and it’s becoming clear that if they don’t start competing or winning on a consistent basis then by the time Blake Griffin’s rookie contract is up for renewal there’ll be an ever decreasing chance that he would choose to remain with this organization.

Inasmuch as Dan Gilbert had made that rather infantile statement that the Cavaliers would indeed win an NBA title before LeBron James and the Miami Heat would have the chance to do so. Even if the statement had been made in anger it clearly shows that the demeanor and persona of the owner as a person. And granted NBA Commissioner David Stern saw fit to fine the owner for his behavior and several outrageous statements made. It just goes to show how out of touch the owners can be when it comes to the role of a player as an employee within the league. The NBPA and the existing collective bargaining agreement gives the players their right to opt out of a their contracts dependent on length of service after their initial first three years in the NBA . If an owner such as Gilbert doesn’t understand that then the statement made that he comes across as a slave owner with a large plantation of indentured slaves isn’t that far off in terms of its veracity .

While James was a player with the team Gilbert saw its value increase at least threefold to the point that it was valued at in excess of $400 million . Now the team might not be even worth anymore than $250 million at best, as such was LeBron James’ value to the organization simply not just from a competitive standpoint but also from an economic one as well.

LeBron James’ departure may well have been an abrupt one but the owner did himself no favors in firing Mike Brown , Byron Scotts’ predecessor and then allowing former GM Danny Ferry to leave. The biggest faux-pas on the part of Gilbert however while this whole debacle unfolded was his wish not to consult James as to who he would be hiring as Brown’s successor. That may well have been the straw to break the camel’s back and led to James making the choice that he did to pursue his career elsewhere. And while the fans in Cleveland may well have felt betrayed by the player’s actions I do feel that they ought to have looked at the actions of the team’s owner ! Does anyone truly believe that Jerry Buss would have acted in such a way were this Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson had been fired by the Lakers ? Common sense never was that profound it’d appear within the Cleveland Cavaliers’ organization (front office) and it appears there still isn’t any at this juncture .

Well now that the Cleveland Cavaliers have a win finally to start as a new streak they now have the privilege of hosting another moribund and woefully inept team this upcoming Sunday when they play the Washington Wizards . Care to guess what the outcome of that game might be ?

You’re Only As Good As Your Last Game ……. Unfortunately If Your Last Game Was Good As The Ones That’ve Been Played By The Cavaliers and Wizards Then Than That’s Not Saying A Great Deal ………….. !

I’m sorry but being an avid NBA fan I’ve always loved the spirit of competition and that goes through a whole litany of sports that I’ve either grown up participating in or watching from afar. At present but there’s no other way to explain it but there really are some god-damn awful teams in the league at present . And it’s clearly down to the lack of real quality coaches in the NBA and the very fact that in large part many of the players simply aren’t that good.

At present the two worst teams in the league record wise are Minnesota Timberwolves (11-30) and the preposterously bad Cleveland Cavaliers (8-39). I’m sorry but not even Byron Scott can now coach this team out of the mess that they’re in. Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert may well have made the fans in Cleveland a promise that a NBA title banner would be raised inside the Quicken Loans Arena before LeBron James and the Miami Heat would be a led to title by the former Cavaliers’ player. And I know that as of late the Heat have had their problems in the league with a number of setbacks and the fact that their triumvirate of James , Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade have suddenly become injury prone and the very fact that the team’s —- productivity has been a little inconsistent . Well it won’t hide the fact that they’re still one of the teams to beat in the Eastern Conference .

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra I’ve no doubt is a capable coach and will right the ship and I can see them contending . The same however cannot be said of the Cavaliers as they descend into an abyss of mediocrity. There’s not been enough that can be said about this team as they have lost 20 consecutive games . And if you thought that statistic was bad then you’ve only got to simply look at the team’s statistics to see how bad things have really become for the organization as a whole. Even with a veteran such as Antawn Jamison on board the Cavaliers simply hasn’t had an answer for any of their opponents that they’ve met this season.

It goes without saying that the only hope that the Cleveland Cavaliers may now have is to go for broke and simply just “tank the season” in the hope that they can earn one of the top picks in the 2011 NBA Draft. And with there being such an abundance of talent in the college ranks namely Kemba Walker , Jared Sullinger , Darius Morris , Marcus Morris , Jimmer Fredette , and Kyle Singler amongst a litany young college players who’ll be looking to make their mark at the professional level. It may well on appearance not be such a bad thing were the Cavaliers to go down that particular path. At this juncture I’m wondering also how Dan Gilbert’s demeanor has to be doing . In an offseason where he berates LeBron James for abandoning the team , I find it mildly amusing that much of this could have been avoided had both parties involved acted with common courtesy rather than letting this idiotic play out in public for their own personal consumption !

Now while no one can deny that John Wall had a stellar collegiate career with the Kentucky Wildcats but his career thus far with the Washington Wizards (13-35) has been anything but average at best. And while praise has been heaped upon the player I can’t help but feel that they’re simply not good enough to be even competitive within the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. A number one overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft Wall was seen as the corner piece of this team with him perhaps working in part alongside Gilbert Arenas . But alas, that wasn’t to be as the seasoned veteran was shipped off to the Orlando Magic as part of a multi-player multi-team deal .

Say what you will but the Wizards’ fans in attendance at the Verizon Center in Washington , DC can’t have envisaged this all unfolding as a spectacle in front of their very eyes. Their season has been bad enough as it is with the inconsistency playing to all facets of the Wizards’ game . And with what has taken place with the Washington Redskins and their rather mundane season under the tenure of Mike Shanahan , Kyle Shanahan and that rather mediocre coaching staff , in truth one could have a great deal of sympathy for the fans in the nation’s capitol. It’s not as if the Washington Nationals were about to provide them with any solace whatsoever. Although the fans are holding out for a change in fortunes for the team this upcoming season at the Nationals Ballpark . I’d say at this moment in time they’d be better off praying for hell to freeze over first before they can see any of the three teams in question actually turn themselves into championship contenders.

I’m not so sure as to what needs to be done in order for the Washington Wizards to be competitive. From a coaching standpoint this young roster needs to learn as much as they can as fast as they can if they’re to show any semblance of progress . And that’s the real task that Flip Saunders is now facing even with the assistance of his coaching staff led by Randy Wittman and former NBA player Sam Cassell . If this staff cannot get this Wizards’ team heading in the right direction then to my mind then the turnaround in fortunes that they seek won’t be happening anytime soon ! And that will be to the embarrassment of the Wizards’ front office , GM Ernie Grunfeld and that of principal managing partner Ted Leonsis .

Now when these two teams meet at the Verizon Center I’d certainly like to think that the NBA hierarchy won’t have the temerity to make this part of the national broadcast or through their cable broadcast on their own in-house provider NBA Tv . As poor as the two teams have been playing I certainly don’t think that the nation ought to have to endure such garbage ! Simply put , this will do absolutely nothing to enhance the brand of the NBA , certainly not the brand and product that has given us Jordan , Kareem , Malone , Ewing , Magic Johnson , the 95-96 Bulls’ team and a slew of other NBA greats !

As an avid fan of the game just like any other NBA fan I’d prefer to see competitive games with levels of dexterity and athleticism . Unfortunately when the Cavaliers and Wizards meet on Sunday 13 th February that’s unlikely to happen ! Somehow I think at this juncture I’m sure that David Stern is looking for options if not a chance perhaps to ask that both teams simply settle the result of the game by playing checkers rather than subjecting the nation to this particular form of mediocrity on an NBA basketball court .

What thoughts if any do you have on the NBA season and the woefully inept form of the teams lumbering at the bottom of their respective divisions ? Simply chime in with your thoughts on this topic and any other as it relates to the NBA .

Well the NBA ___ season though not yet in full swing has given us a great deal to contend with and to discuss. Washington Wizards’ rookie point guard John Wall has already set himself apart from the rest of this season’s rookies with a grand entrance by posting a triple double in the team’s first win of the season. And if the player’s exhilirating displays are anything to go by then fans attending the Verizon Center in Washington DC will be in for a treat for much of the season.

Wizards’ coach Flip Saunders has got to be encouraged with the effort put forth by the young rookie who seems to be showing a growth and maturity far beyond his young years. And indeed the front office of the organization led by team President Ernie Grunfeld, VP of Basketball Operations Tommy Sheppard and VP of Player Personnel Milt Newton must feel a sense of justification in making Wall the number one overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft . And while there can be no denying that the team will undergo some growing pains as the team tries to acclimatize itself with the offseason changes made within the organization it has to be said that this start may well augur well for the Wizards and the faith shown in John Wall .

Now as we all know with the recent moves that took place within the Eastern Conference of the NBA wherein everything seemed to have revolved around the acquisitions of Chris Bosh and LeBron James by the Miami Heat made everything else pale into insignificance. So much so, that even with the New York Knicks acquiring Amar’e Stoudemire with Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal now finding a home with the Boston Celtics. All the fervor and furore seems to be about what happens within the conference and whether or not the Heat can seemingly led what many NBA analysts will be a ceremonial romp and anointing of the team as NBA champions .

With Gilbert Arenas due to make an imminent return it will be interesting to see how the seasoned veteran deals with his new teammate and who takes the reins of the team. And given what we know about Arenas as a player and the fact that he’s still under close scrutiny of not only the NBA hierarchy led by NBA Commissioner David Stern but also the entire front office of the Wizards’ organization. He’s now on something of a tight leash and any major transgression could see his career with the Wizards come to an abrupt end. The player has already fallen afoul with his coach this preseason having lied to him having faked an injury in a preseason game to facilitate the entry of rookie Nick Young into the game played against the Atlanta Hawks. Even with a public apology to the organization and the fans it has to be said that Arenas just doesn’t seem to have that instinct as knowing what’s right from wrong. Being armoral would appear to be the norm for the player and his mindset would appear to be if …. I screw up a less than contrite apology will suffice .

I’m under no illusion about the expectations of this team and although I can foresee them making the NBA playoffs I don’t fully expect them to challenge the likes of the Atlanta Hawks , Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls or Miami Heat for overall supremacy and dominance within the Eastern Conference. At best should they qualify from within their conference I can’t see them being any higher than a fifth or sixth seed at best . Much of the team’s fortunes this season will be dependent on how much cohesion is shown by the team and obviously upon the coaching prowess shown by Flip Saunders and his coaching staff . If they can play with any type of consistency and maintain that level throughout the season then the bye product by way of an above .500 record and the garnering of a playoff berth would be viewed as tremendous bonus by the organization.

If you thought that the bloodbath of the midterm elections were bad wherein the Tea Party essentially corralled in not only what appears to be an intransigent Republican Party that gave the Democrats an ass kicking which its leadership will long remember well into the future. It has to be said that President Barack Obama , Senator Harry Reid and House Representative and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have to be licking their wounds and perhaps now see the error of their ways ? You simply cannot expect to always govern from a position of strength without showing civility and at the same time be willing to listen to an opposing view no matter how idiotic you might think it to be. Well that’s now what seems to have happened as the President has come out and accepted the blame for his party’s disastrous showing in these elections. Consider however , what now seems to be going on within the organizations of the Dallas Cowboys , Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins ? Comedic farces simply don’t get any better than this and it would take an extremely creative writer to script something far more riveting and funnier than what we’re all now witnessing . I’d dare say that should this ever hit the big screen there’d be a plethora of Hollwood A-listers willing to take on and play the lead roles of the main characters in question ?

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones has offered his profound apologies to the team’s fans and the fact that he hadn’t envisaged things getting so out of hand . I beg to differ as this team simply wasn’t as good as advertized ! And in coach Wade Phillips , Jones possesses a coach who seems to be way out of his depth , never mind the fact that the coach himself and his coaching staff have been about as efficient as the use of a sponge would have proven to be on the Titanic . Suffice to say that Phillips couldn’t coach or find his way out of a wet paper bag ! To suggest that Phillips ought to be viewed as a lame duck coach would be something of an understatement but the longer this charade goes on the worse it becomes for the entire organization never mind the team itself. Not one of these players on the team has a sense of pride or purpose as they systematically seem to be “mailing it in” each successive week while the team’s owner continues to look like the proverbial buffoon ! I can only assume that the Cowboys’ fans will continue to attend in droves at Cowboys Stadium to witness the diatribe now being served up by team right through to the end of the season . In retrospect the Cowboys’ season is already over but I’d like to think that the Green Bay Packers can simply add another in that coffin when the two teams meet at Lambeau Field Green Bay , Wisconsin this upcoming Sunday !

I’d like to think that the farce also on display with the Minnesota Vikings will soon come to an abrupt end . But unfortunately anything that seems to involve Brett Favre seems to be prolonged and can be as painful to endure as a bad tooth ache. Suffice to say that with the fallout over the Randy Moss affair and Brad Childress’ rather innocuous explanation that the trade for the player was a mistake gives one the impression that the club has now become a legitimate asylum for the legally insane. Could this been what team owner Zygi Wilf envisaged for his team at the start of the season ? I certainly don’t think so ! But then again this is the Vikings we’re talking about and whose every move has been placed under the microscope this season as if we were all witnessing some kind of lab experiment taking place . God this petri dish just seems to be going rancid and personally I don’t think that I can stomach much more of this crap !

Well it appears that Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder for all of business prowess simply can’t hire a coach who seemingly possesses and ounce of intellect. With the recent hiring of Mike Shanahan and an entirely new coaching staff which also includes Shanahan’s son , Kyle Shanahan . It would appear that no sooner had things seem to have calmed down within the organization a full blown maelstrom seems to be back within the team’s midst. Now at the midpoint of the team’s season Mike Shanahan seems to be questioning not only the fitness of his starting quarterback Donovan McNabb but aslo the player’s skillset as it surround McNabb’s comprehension of the “two minute drill”. Not only that but Shanahan would then proffer up the comment that McNabb’s backup Rex Grossman would be better suited to lead the team in such moment’s during a game. Given Grossman’s lack of dexterity having replaced McNabb in the waning moments of team’s game against the Detroit Lions and their subsequent loss 37-25 .I’ve got to ask myself what the hell was it that Shanahan and his son were watching ?

There’s the suggestion that parity within the NFL makes the game a great spectacle but given the display of the teams within the NFC I’m not so sure that’s exactly what we’re now seeing at present. If things get much worse I think that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) ought to intervene and fine the NFL in order to protect the consumer (fans) from fraud. Because to my mind that’s what is now being perpetrated by the NFL at present !

What thoughts if any do you have concerning the fate of the Washington Wizards this season ? Also how do you see the turmoil now unfolding for the Cowboys , Redskins and Vikings ending up ? Simply chime on in with a comment . From my own perspective I’d rather see this all play out rather than there being a complete rewind of the whole charade we’ve all witnessed so far !

Here We Go Again …….. Did He Really Do That ? No It’s Not Steve Urkel

Should I be troubled by the following or I should I simply put it off as nothing more than another athlete simply showing how stupid and unintelligent they are ? Once again it would appear that Washington Wizards’ guard Gilbert Arenas simply has learned nothing from his suspension by the NBA having brought two unlicensed weapons to his place of employment , the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. __ home of the Wizards. You may remember Arenas was involved in altercation with his then teammate Javaris Crittenton , where both players brandished their weapons at each other simply over a gambling debt that one owed the other. Now pardon me for saying this but when you have to resort to using a gun merely to show your masculinity to me that simply shows that you’re nothing more than a coward !

Arenas having served his suspension is now back with the team looking to recuperate his image and compensate for what he says was a bad error in judgment on his part. You don’t say ? I was under the impression that Arenas brandished his weapon of his own volition and was prepared to use it no matter what the cost. It seems idiotic to think that the player still shows a lack of intelligence but should choose to use his demeanor and standing to try and alleviate his self worth as an individual. In his latest faux pas the player chose to lie to his coach Flip Saunders , feined an injury during a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks in order that teammate, rookie Nick Young could gain some playing time. Now while some might think that the act might not amount to much in terms of Arenas and his intent. But I look at this as a rather stupid thing to do on his part , as it merely shows that the growth in the maturity of Arenas just doesn’t seem to be there. If he’s now prepared to lie to his coach over something such as this which one might view as innocuous even if it was meant to be an altruistic act. Arenas is either complete ass or he’s trying to insinuate that he’s becoming the elder statesman and leader of his team ____ the Washington Wizards.

Arenas fined for faking injury before Wizards game

Washington (AP)—For someone looking to get back into the good graces of his team, its fans and the NBA, Gilbert Arenas has a funny way of showing it.

The Washington Wizards guard’s latest escapade took place Tuesday, when coach Flip Saunders announced before a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks that Arenas would miss the contest with a sore left knee.

But Arenas revealed after the Wizards’ 107-92 victory that he pretended to have a bum knee to give teammate Nick Young a chance to start. He told reporters Wednesday that he was trying to do Young a favor.

“I lied to coach and told him my knee was sore so he’d start Nick,” Arenas said.

Arenas was fined an undisclosed amount by the Wizards for his deception. It was another blow to the image of a player who is still trying to recover from his 50-game suspension and felony conviction for bringing guns into the locker room last season.

After Wednesday’s practice, Arenas first said he wasn’t talking, then appeared before reporters offering a halfhearted apology for his actions.

“I screwed up again, so I just want to say sorry,” he said. “I wasn’t really thinking that this was going to be another media outburst. It’s like everything I do now, someone, tit for tat, tries to blow it out of proportion.”

Arenas’ altruistic gesture might have gone over a little better if Arenas didn’t lie to his coach, or if he hadn’t already ruffled feathers this preseason with his moody press conference at the team’s media day or his statements that he would “move on” after helping No. 1 pick John Wall learn the ropes.

Saunders, who has gone out of his way to defend Arenas this preseason, said he was shocked and disappointed with Arenas. He spoke to Arenas and the team about the situation.

The Wizards embark on a season where they’re not thought to offer much by way of competitiveness within the Eastern Conference . And after the escapades of last season you can only be assured that they’ll turn up to play their games and hopefully show something to their success starved fans . It seems somewhat sad given the legacy of their former owner Abe Pollin and the things he stood for as a well respected owner within the NBA hierarchy and around the league as a whole. Now with Ted Leonsis taking over the helm of the organization it remains to be seen as to the type of franchise this club will become. This much we do know for the sake of the progression of the team’s first round draft pick John Wall the number one pick overall from this past offseason the team and in particular Arenas had better show the fans that their intent is to play a brand of basketball that will be entertaining. If not Wall and in particular the fans there at the Verizon Center may well become completely disinterested altogether.

A great deal is expected of Wall as a player and he’s seen as the face of the franchise for the future even with Arenas installed and thought of as the team’s best player. But much of what may well happen on the court will come down to the coaching prowess of Saunders and his coaching staff. And as good as Saunders is thought of as a coach I don’t know that he’ll be able to bring about the measure of success that the fans and front office will be hoping for. The team’s progression if anything may well be measured over the course of the season and if anything that success might well be deemed as having an above .500 record for the year. A playoff berth though not out of the realms of possibility given the fact that the Wizards are in the Eastern Conference and where mediocrity amongst the lower tiered teams within the conference seemingly is the norm. This much we can be certain of the margin between the top three teams within the conference and that of the others there is as vast as one could imagine. Simply put even with the addition of LeBron James within the Eastern Conference I don’t really expect to see the level of basketball being played there being raised to where the fans will become in awe of what they’re actually witnessing.

The Miami Heat , Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic will be looking to cement their identity to be viewed as the prohibitive favorites within the Eastern Conference. And while it appears that the majority of analysts and journalists covering the NBA appear to be ready to anoint the Heat as this season’s uncrowned champions. I do believe that there will be a great deal of jockeying between the triumvirate of teams mentioned . Granted James along with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade make the Heat a formidable team and without a doubt we all expect to see them in the NBA playoffs at season’s end. With the expectations being that the Heat will essentially cast aside whomever they’re matched up against in the earlier rounds before marching their to the conference finals and then ultimately meeting up with whomever comes out of the Western Conference in the NBA Finals itself. As to what’s envisaged by the other teams within the league and the actuality of it all remains to be seen.

Whatever part is played in the season by the Washington Wizards I can only hope that for the sake of the franchise Gilbert Arenas doesn’t continue to embarrass himself and the team anymore than he already has done. It’s bad enough that the image of the NBA as a whole hasn’t been awash, with anything that one could really count as being positive . The success of the national team in the FIBA world championships while commendable was simply orchestrated under the hard work of the players who participated but most of all by the contributions of Mike Krzyzewski and Jerry Colangelo . Anyone thinks differently ought to simply assess their undertakings over the past four years alone and the direction that USA Basketball has taken. LeBron James and his self absorbed ego and the offseason antics simply made most fans of the game watch in amazement and ask what the hell is wrong within the NBA and in particular with David Stern’s tenureship as commissioner ?

It’s All About Me ……, Me …… Me …….

Was there ever a more over-hyped player in the NBA than the Washington WizardsGilbert Arenas ? The self proclaimed ‘Agent Zero’ has been very much that for a franchise that has paid him well over the past few years. And in return the dividends yielded have been meager. Say what you will but to my mind the player has outstayed his welcome in DC. Others may well feel and think somewhat differently.

Gilbert Arenas (0) of the Washington Wizards seen here at the team's training facility at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond , Va. Seemingly non peturbed with the fact that he’s only had to play 15 games for the franchise over the past two seasons due to injury and repeated surgical operations to repair damaged knee ligaments – the removal of scar tissue. Arenas is said to be of the opinion that he can rediscover the form that made him one the game’s most prolific and productive scorers.

Arenas at his very best , seen here in December of 2006 , he put up 60 points against the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the meantime the franchise hasn’t shown a competitive presence in the league. Never-mind the fact that they’ve had to languish within the Southeastern Division of the Eastern Conference of the NBA. There resides conference champions , the Orlando Magic , alongsides the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats and the Miami Heat .

Coming off a desperately poor season from 2008-09 , wherein the team posted a 19-63 record over the regular season , last within their divsion. A record which they shared jointly with the Los Angeles Clippers. But it was by no means the worst in the NBA. As that dubious distinction went to the Sacramento Kings who posted a mark of 17-65 for the season. But since when did being competitive matter to the NBA ? Commissioner David Stern has made it more of a point to hype up the personalities of the marquee players of the NBA. Rather than seemingly marketing the teams as a brand in large part of being their product. So for all sense and purpose the failings of franchise aren’t always brought to the fore. Not unless it highlights one the league’s elite players .

As to what awaits Arenas this season , there’s not really much that one can expect from the team. Other than seasoned veterans such as Caron Butler , Antawn Jamison, Mike James , Mike Miller and Brendan Haywood . There isn’t much on the Wizards’ roster to suggest that they pose a serious threat to the supremacy of the Orlando Magic , Clevleand Cavaliers or Boston Celtics within the Eastern Conference. Much less be taken as a serious threat to the rest of the NBA. This in essence is an aging roster whose window of opportunity has long since closed. And even if they do have an experienced coach in the guise of Flip Saunders to guide them. It’s hard to see this team as being able to acquit themselves with a great deal of presence and authority to begin with.

Arenas has a lot to prove. Not only to himself but also to his teammates , the Wizards’ fans as well as the rest of the NBA. Far too long the players has marched to the beat of his own drum and singing his own praise along the way. Without in effect have anything tangible by way of success to show for it all. It begs the question what will Agent Zero now do for that grand finale as he embarks on the twilight of his career ? There’s but one not so big paycheck out there left for him to make. So what’s up next for Gilbert Arenas aka ‘Agent Zero ‘ ? If it ain’t about him then who’s it going to be about – his teammates ? I think not !

There’s no I ….in team and there’s obviously I in we . So one can surmise that it’s going to be about ‘me’ …….as in Gilbert Arenas .

Arenas silences Agent Zero act – for now …..

By Adrian Wojnarowski Yahoo Sports Writer

RICHMOND, Va. – Back in the summer, Gilbert Arenas(notes) had rediscovered his old game as these young, earnest NBA guards begged for him to unleash his old act, too. The shots were dropping out of the sky inside a Chicago gymnasium and witnesses watched the uninitiated players desperate for the full treatment.

They barked “Agent Zero” and “Hibachi” and wanted to see the cartoon character come alive. Only, Arenas refused to play the part anymore.

Three knee surgeries limited Gilbert Arenas to playing only 15 games the past two seasons.

Perhaps Arenas is too sheepish to bring all that back until his greatness, until his knee, has shown staying power again. Through training camp and one preseason game, through word and deed, this has been the calculated presence of a man with an impulsive past. Three years ago, Arenas never stopped shooting and never stopped talking. An improbable rise out of nowhere had elevated on the precision of a peerless jump shot and the power of a peculiar persona.

“Just straight Gil,” Tim Grover remembered Arenas telling them in his gym.

If there’s a better song that best describes Arenas . Then it’d have to be Mya’s sexual suggestive song ….. ” It’s All About Me ” Doubt my word ? It’s always been about Arenas …… on or off the court !
