I Did It My Way ……………

I’ve always felt a great admiration for an athlete who walks away from the game on their own terms , rather than in the end for them having to be shown the door unceremoniously . It happens far too often with regard to the latter. And I know there’ll be those out there who will say that it’s their right to go on as long it’s humanly possible. But consider this , in the real world there’s a mandatory retirement age. And granted, we see people in all walks of working late into their years in a variety of fields. We’re not going to see someone in their late forties still playing in the NFL . Well , not unless your name happens to be Brett Favre. I can only surmise, that he wants to play ‘til he’s as old as Methuselah ? And for those of you who aren’t religious or perhaps have never read the Bible. Methuselah happened to be the oldest recorded person from that venerable book.

Well after 12 years in the NFL, Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback, Kurt Warner , has to decided to call it a day. He goes out on his own terms having had a story book career . A two time league MVP, Superbowl (SB XXXIV) winner and Supebowl winning MVP. Amongst other accolades , Warner has three of the top five performances ever as a quart back in the Superbowl. If that’s enough to book him a place in Canton , Ohio, then they might as well shut the frigging place down once and for all ! Never mind the regular season stats that’ve littered his career. Kurt Warner has been an exemplary player, teammate and an outstanding human being. And there are not too many sport’s individuals that one can say that about in this day and age. I don’t care in what sporting endeavor you might care to name. There has never been any controversy surrounding Warner on or off the field. And his peers past and present consider him to be amongst the very best not only as competitor , teammate or opponent. But also in terms of his character and his compassion for other less well of than him. That will be the measure of Warner’s legacy upon the NFL.

Now having said this, I must admit that his retirement hasn’t taken me by complete surprise. I understand why he now feels it’s time to bow out from a stage he graced so successfully. He’s a family man but also someone who has devoted a great time in the pursuance of helping others. And his beliefs , as he’s a devout Christian , wills Warner now to a higher calling . In this case it’s not solely about spreading the world of Christ but also to as I’d previously stated is to help those in need. It’s the same approach that was taken by former Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Tony Dungy. And it is now the same path that Warner will now follow . Both men , their accomplishments and their calling are commendable traits !

Now looking at the Cardinals going forward, I think that they have a solid foundation, from which to build upon. That being said , I’m not quite sure as of yet that Matt Leinart possesses the temperament to lead this team. It’s all well and good that he had things essentially handed to him on a silver platter with USC. But since his arrival in the NFL , he’s yet to show that he has the capacity for learning the game , much less show signs of maturity. How else can one explain the petulance shown by him when he was replaced as the starter on the Cardinals’ team by coach, Ken Whisenhunt ? If that doesn’t indicate that Leinart, when at USC was all about self entitlement, rather than doing what is best for the team. Then it’s easy to understand the reason why he’s struggled to make his presence felt in the NFL. With Warner , having been given the starter’s role on the team they haven’t looked back since.

It will definitely be strange, next season to see this Cardinals’ team take the field and no longer see Warner there , with his name emblazoned on the back of his jersey. But as I alluded to earlier , he walks away from this game under his own steam , in good health , knowing that he’s accomplished a great many feats that perhaps none of us could ever have dreamed him doing . Warner did things his way and for that I for am grateful to say that it has been indeed a privilege to see him play. Anything beyond that is now just an after thought.

I don’t think anyone could’ve said it better than ol’ “Blue Eyes”… Frank Sinatra. ‘I Did It My Way’

  1. Hey Top…
    Nice writeup on Warner…
Classy guy – I’ll be honest, I was hoping maybe he’d stick around for one more year – just how well he was playing and how many weapons Arizona had on that roster – you just felt that he could give it one more go… but either way, you know he won’t come back – this will be his final decision… and to toss in another two cents, I think Warner deserves to be in the Hall – and hope he’ll make it there. Later! KP

Warner has a ‘higher calling’ and I can understand that ! Where I do see him still being involved with the NFL , will be probably as a game day analyst with either of the networks. He’s very articulate and hasn’t a problem speaking his mind on the game.

As to the Cardinals , I think that could very well struggle with Leinart at the helm as their starting quarterback. His game has regressed and he seems unwilling to put in the work to make him a better player allround.

If they can’t play better under him then I can’t see them challenging for honors in the NFC , much less the NFL as a whole.

Whisenhunt may well have to look over his options at the position , if Leinart isn’t completely ready for the task at hand.

Thanks for chiming in with a comment and I hope it’ll be more of things to come from you on a regular basis !

As you can see I’ve got the site emblazoned with ‘the ladies’ that I like .

  2. Great piece, Al.

For the life of me I can’t understand when I hear critics say Warner ISN’T worthy of the Hall of Fame.

If not him, then who is? Two MVPs? What other two-time NFL isn’t in the Hall?

Three Super Bowl appearances with two perennially crappy teams?

Besides, since when are numbers the only thing that matters?

That’s so true with regard to Warner. But if you just simply look at his body of work during the regular season and the stats. There are numbers there that are so astonishing that they simply jump out of the pages and right up into your face. Number of games where he threw for over 400 yds , number of games where he had in excess of 20 or more completions. Naysayers are simply stupid if they feel he’s not worthy of Canton.

My only worry now is that the team could regress with Leinart now being the ‘signal caller’ for the team.

Simply put this’ll be a make or break year for Matt Leinart. He’s got to prove that having left USC, ‘he’ can play the position just as well as his Trojans’ predecessor Carson Palmer. Though of late, Palmer and the ‘Bungles’ have proven to me that they’re still ‘over-rated’ !

  3. I agree with you on Warner, in fact I was contemplating writing a post called “This Is How It’s Done” in reference to his classy retirement as oppose to Farve’s.

For the greater part of his career, he was a division rival to my 49ers, but I never really developed a hatred towards him, simply because like you’ve mentioned … he’s a good guy. He’s had a story book career, and he can now ride off into the sunset.

I wish nothing but the best for a guy like Warner.

That’s the ‘thing’ with Warner and the difference between he and Favre . With one you see the ‘good guy’ and the ‘other’ it’s someone you don’t whether or not you simply dislike or you just simply put up with or hate him because of who he is and the name ‘Brett Favre’.

That’s as succinct as I can put it without sounding too condescending towards Favre. Both have done tremendous things for the game. But I also like to see character and not just an athlete who’s an as_hole a great deal of the time. Which in large part is what Favre has become in the waning part of his career in the NFL. ‘Others’ who believe otherwise have their noses affixed to close to his sphincter to begin with !

The NFL and the game needs people like Warner to avert our attention away from ‘dumb idiots’ such as Favre , who just ‘curry’ favor with the public whenever they’re in need of sympathy.

That’s why you get the ‘morons’ within ESPN fawning over his (Favre’s) ass like some adolescent schoolgirl with a crush on her very ‘first love’.

That was the most recent pic I could find with regard to him and the family at the press conference to announce his retirement. If only Favre would now take the hint and also ride off into the sunset !

  4. Yeah, Warner is a classy guy. I never really rooted for him, but there’s only so many guys that you can like. He’s a classic example of not giving up. He’s been doubted throughout his career, and always found ways to shove it right back in peoples faces through his play on the field. We’ll see how Leinart does, but I don’t see him getting the Cards to the playoffs. At least they have a ground game now with Beanie Wells so that should help him out a little at least!

Pity Favre can’t take the hint ? But it’s as they say ‘… horses for courses’.

Warner is doing the right thing as he’s getting out while he’s ahead. Next season it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the studio as an analyst on any of a number of NFL shows. He has the right sort of demeanor and personality to do that type of job really well.

We Brits have a saying …’ this guy is a wanker’ ! In other words he’s blowing smoke up everyone’s ass while he mastur_ates to gratify himself.

As to the Cardinals, it’s now time for Leinart to step up to the plate and show us all what he’s worth. After the privileged upbringing with the Trojans , he’d better not start to pussy foot around like a wimp.

If Leinart screws things up with that roster then he ought to have both of his testicles removed and hung outside Glendale Stadium as a reminder to his successor as what to expect should he f_ck things up.
