I’m Not Buying ……….

I’m Not Buying ……….

It’s becoming rather idiotic to see what might be the meltdown of the Orlando Magic and the fact that All Star center Dwight Howard having received his eighteenth technical foul has to sit out a one game mandatory suspension without pay. All this coming from a player who’s meant to be the leader on this team ? Howard has shown his offensive and defensive capabilities but in terms of moral and real vocal leadership it just doesn’t seem to be there . And granted the Magic’s coach Stan Van Gundy has complained to the NBA —- hierarchy that the officials are gunning for Howard each times he steps unto the court . There may well be some veracity to that argument but Howard doesn’t do himself any justice with his candor and irrational behavior when he runs afoul of the officials and the officiating .

In terms of support from Dwight Howard’s teammates this team is so inconsistent that it’s hard to make an argument as to why they can be viewed with any justification as a favorite for the NBA title much less being viewed as conference favorite . They’ve fallen somewhat down the standings in terms of a playoff berth and now sit behind conference leading Chicago Bulls , Boston Celtics and Miami Heat . And with the Heat and Celtics due to meet this weekend in what will be viewed as a series decider and who will ultimately gain the number two seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Orlando Magic’s season if anything has been uneven and in large part that has been down to the fact their inconsistency and the fact that they simply don’t close out games that they need to win. Whether or not that is the fault of Stan Van Gundy and his coaching staff I’ll let you be the judge of that ! With what appears to be a potential playoff match-up against the Atlanta Hawks another team to my mind that continually underachieves and how it is that Joe Johnson is continually viewed as a marquee player within the NBA is simply beyond me ! If it’s OK to steal money from an organization by simply offering them nothing in return then Johnson may well be the poster child for such a sentiment . Given the value of his current contract with the Hawks I think you’ll understand where I’m coming from as it relates to this argument. The Hawks’ front office may well have impressed with something about Johnson prior to the trade deadline as he was being courted by several teams around the league while he was an unrestricted free agent. Joe Johnson can play but as a leader he’s simply not the player I’d view as a franchise player , if anything I see him as rather the number two scorer for a franchise that it is need of offense . Beyond that there isn’t really much to Joe Johnson’s game.

If the Orlando Magic are to have at least a remote chance of going deep into the playoffs then Dwight Howard will have to really corral his aggressiveness and show that he can undoubtedly lead this team with a great deal of authority . And given the trades made by GM Otis Smith as sought by Van Gundy , as goes Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson then so will the fate of the team as they seek to return to the NBA Finals . Gilbert Arenas in spite of his waywardness while with the Washington Wizards you knew that he had the potential to give you 20 , 30 if not anywhere up 40 plus points in a game when he sets his mind to it . Now with the Magic he’s simply become something of a non-factor and if anything he’s got to improve his productivity along with that of Quentin Richardson and Brandon Bass will be needed to make the Magic more of an all round team and a constant threat.

The Eastern Conference in spite of its ‘star power’ what still resonates with me is that you still have teams that qualify for the postseason with sub .500 records and I’m suppose to think that the quality of play has been heightened by the addition of LeBron James , Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams who are viewed as elite players within the NBA ? Granted , within the conference the play is in large part predicated upon defense . And undoubtedly it has played a factor for many of the teams but in essence I feel that a team has to be well balanced in the aspect of its play. And that is also one of the primary reasons why I cannot see the New York Knicks going deep into the playoffs. No team coached by Mike DAntoni has ever been known for their defensive prowess and the Knicks aren’t about to become the first.

The acquisition of Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire by the Knicks at the behest of team owner James Dolan and GM Donnie Walsh had more to do with the fact that Madison Square Garden was on the way to becoming an elephants graveyard in terms of attendance for Knicks’ home games than it was a place to be seen by the paparazzi . What might be even more troubling is the fact that the Knicks are a moribund 11-15 since the trade acquisition of Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets . And granted the player has come in and showed his offensive prowess for the team but beyond that the Knicks have little to show for it all by way of anything tangible . What that says about the Knicks as an organization clearly will be translated by the success achieved by the team this postseason.

The NBA’s most valuable franchise needed to make a big splash merely to remain relevant within the NBA as a whole . And if anything it had to have been a welcoming sight for NBA Commissioner David Stern to see the organization cap off the move of acquiring both Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire . What awaits the team this postseason remains to be seen but it has become clear for those with any knowledge of the game the New York Knicks had better be able to prove the naysayers wrong if they’re to have any real semblance of success rather than the perception that the trades alone instantly made them a great deal better and a major force and threat in the NBA this postseason and for the foreseeable future .

What thoughts if any do you have on the overall chances of both the Orlando Magic and New York Knicks’ chances in the playoffs ? And what signs if any are you most looking forward once the postseason starts this postseason ? By all means leave a comment as to your thoughts on the matters raised here in these topics and as usual thanks for the continued support as it is greatly appreciated !

Well already teams are having their Spring tryouts to give the coaches ideas on their freshmen and sophomores but more so to weigh up how their quarterbacks are coming along.

Come the football season start like you said it’s going to be very interesting .

I’m not interested in the preseason polls because that’s simply a way gaining fans’ interest rather than showing anything tangible .

  1. A friend and I had this very same debate about Dwight the other day.

I said Dwight, and his inability to control his temper, are detrimental to the Magic. He defended Dwight by saying the refs call him differently and have a quicker trigger finger.

Look, we both know that refs target certain players. Rasheed Wallace is living proof of that. We also both know that guys like Shaq and Dwight Howard are more difficult to referee. Half the time Dwight has the ball under the basket, he gets hammered on what would seem like a flagrant foul on anyone else.

But Dwight’s not doing himself any favors by playing the bad guy. That’s not his persona. I do disagree with you on the leadership. He’s more of a leader than anyone on the Tampa Bay Rays.

But I’m also down with leading by example and Dwight can’t help his team win if he’s not on the floor.

    1. Chris Humpherys

Howard can’t control his temper because he’s still immature and you know the reason why ? He’s of the opinion that he can still carry on that dumb ass Superman persona ! Let me ask you this how is it that Shaq could still play with all that aggressiveness at that stage of his career and still be productive whereas Dwight can’t do the same thing ?

As for leadership when has anyone on the Rays actually showed any leadership ? When you can answer me that then we can have a serious discussion on the matter ! But for now don’t make those rather inane comments as they have no veracity whatsoever !

It’s been Maddon who’s provided the leadership thinking that that the team would show maturity over the course of time . Having lost Crawford there’s nothing there and Longoria in the end will just become a ‘cheap version’ of Jeter without the accolades and a ring unless he goes elsewhere !

If Dwight can’t be vocal when he’s off the floor telling his teammates to go out and get the job done then the Magic won’t be going anywhere anytime soon ! And for Van Gundy he needs to quieten down and show some semblance of intelligence instead of coming off looking like a damn buffoon !

  2. I still think the refs are way too hard on Howard about the technicals but at the same time I don’t understand how he can’t shut his mouth. I don’t think people are considering the Magic favourite’s like the Bulls or Celtics but I also think that they have a dark horse kind of chance if things can somehow fall into place, which seems less and less like it is going to happen. However, their showing against the Bulls today w/o Dwight was pretty good. Nevertheless, even though I wrote that maybe that they had a turn around a little while back I don’t see it happening right now but I’ll still be cheering for ’em every step of the way.

    1. Chris Ross

The refs are too hard on Howard ? Are you kiddin’ me ? Howard thinks that he can act all tough and still get away with his act ! How often have you watched the Magic and in particular Howard play ?

The Magic are no more a favorite for the title than I would consider Rosie O’Donnell as being a candidate for a centerfold spread in either Maxim of Playboy magazine !

But I’d definitely have Ewa Sonnet pose in both Maxim and Playboy !

They may well do well in the early rounds with the playoffs but I can’t see them in the conference finals much less the finals itself ! .

  3. I think Orlando has better chance than New York. Orlandom can make to the Eastern finals. Wuth that said Chicago, Miami and Boston are the clas of the east.

  4. The Magic live and die by the 3, and you are right, they are terrible closers. The only way the Magic are going to make a run in the playoffs is if they shoot lights out from 3 like they did a couple years ago. Let’s see if Hedo can step it back into form. As for the Hawks, they are awful. I do believe Joe Johnson is a franchise player, but he isn’t getting any help! For one, they have no point guard. Marvin Williams sux. Josh Smith can only dunk. Yeah, the Hawks don’t have much. They are another one and done squad. Whats your first-round upset? I say the Mavs get their ass kicked by Portland, if that is who they get matched against.

    1. jgome

That’s the only thing to their (Magic’s) game ’cause they suck in transition and other than Howard and Nelson with any degree of consistency they simply can’t rely on anyone else because both Richardson and Arenas are a mere shadow of what Van Gundy had hoped for .

Those two (Arenas & Richardson) are stealing money from the Magic and their front office is way too dumb to now actually realize that ! >

The Hawks are simply scared of their own damn shadows ! Joe Johnson is vastly overrated and isn’t deserving of the money he’s being paid !

    1. aw man, you don’t think Tyler Hansbrough is gonna take the Pacers to the ship’ or what? lol. Yeah, both of them don’t stand a chance. I’m interested to see how the Heat do. Teams that usually win the finals have a strong bench, and Miami doesn’t have one. As for the Knicks, they can’t play D and have no bench, so I don’t expect them to come out of the East. Chicago looks to be the most complete team in the East, imo. Let’s see if they can keep it up when it matters.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea tom…you ready?

      1. jgome

Tyler Hansborough ? Aw man I think he’s the Caucasian version of Shawn Bradley ? LOL,LOL,LOL !!! I’m not saying he’s a stiff but if he’s taking either Cialis or Viagra then he’s got something going on cause it’s not going to be the remnants of a memorable NBA career !

        Aisha Tyler

You’re right about the Bulls as they’re a well balanced team . I thought that the Celtics would be the prohibitive favorites in the East but Ainge went and messed with up the trade of Perkins and Robinson . Instead he’s made their roster imbalanced and lacking in depth on both the offensive and defensive side . And should Rondo get injured Delonte’ West or Arroyo aren’t the guys I’d want at the PG position ! They’re not that good and never have been that good to begin with !

      2. jgome

Man U vs Chelsea ? I’m as ready as I’ll ever be ! It’s going to be one hell of a game that’s for sure ! That 1-0 advantage Utd has got could be erased in a moment should Chelsea get any sort of momentum and confidence going early in the second leg of the game .

It’s not always good to be nice but it’s always good to be naughty and nice ! Darine Hegre .

        tophatal ………………

  5. Tophatal nice blog man,
Howard really needs to step up in the playoffs for Orlando to win, but the technical foul issue probably in part to 1)being a big man and always being around contact 2)like you said, the NBA hierarchy. Orlando-Atlanta series will be a long and boring series in my opinion, with Orlando winning in 6.

    1. Diehardsport

First of all thanks for the comment ! And you’re right Howard does need to step up and show that he’s more than simply a big man but a leader also ! . That’s how all the great centers have been judged alongside winning . But he simply comes off as being an ass ! If the Magic are to prevail then he’s going to have to lead by example , stay out of foul trouble and those alongside him have to step up to the plate themselves .

Not only that but Van Gundy has to stop bitching and whining like someone stole from him after he left his belongings out in the open ! If anything as a coach he ought to be talking to Howard and telling him how to react in such instances where he’s questioning an official’s call .

      tophatal ………………..

  6. Yeah, Chicago is the favorite, but they haven’t made it out of the second round since Jordan was around. I see them making it out of the east, but it’s going to be a tough road to do it no matter what happens. I agree with you that D wins, and NY doesn’t play it!

    1. chappy 81

The reason why I believe that the Bulls will go far is because of coach Tom Thibodeaux and his experience . Look at where he’s been and who he’s assisted as a coach ? They’ve all been winners ……… Popovich and Doc Rivers . Those guys can coach ………… and there’s no denying that Thibodeaux has to have learned something from them both and he was primarily the one that gave those teams their defensive prowess as that has been his speciality .

      tophatal ………..

  7. chappy

I think that Thibodeaux has to be the odds on favorite to win coach of the Year . If he doesn’t get it then the only other deserving candidates I feel are Brooks of the Thunder , Popovich or Collins with the Sixers !

Sometimes it’s not necessarily the team but more the impact of the coach . When the team then buys into the philosophy that’s when you begin to see profound changes in a team’s play
