It seems strange the heavyweight scene of boxing cannot be identified with as having a champion that the fans can actually identify with . At present that niche within the sport has been carved out by the Ukrainian brothers Vladimir and Vitali Klitschko who between them hold all four of the pre-eminent titles that are duly recognized by the major governing bodies of boxing .

From my own perspective the sport and in particular the heavyweight division took a downward spiral the moment that Lennox Lewis stepped away from the ring and announced his retirement as the last undisputed champion of the world . Since then there have been a plethora of claimants to the title in one form or any other with no one champion standing out or having the ability to unite the division . What might now be even more detrimental for the sport is that neither Vitlali or Wladimir Klitschko would care to fight each other and bring about a unified champion within the division . Instead the two have refused to consider such a bout stating that this is in fact due to a promise made to their mother . That asides this only further adds evidence as to the fact that there’s little discerning interest within the division and even less so throughout the sport beyond the names of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather .
And though the fans long for a bout between the two most recognizable names within the sport that prospect now seems further off then one would have thought possible. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has simply scuttled such an instance and Mayweather through his own sheer stupidity simply makes such a scenario seem even further unattainable either through his own outrageous demands or the very fact that he’s still embroiled with a number of legal issues that have yet to be resolved . As a fight fan who longs to see meaningful fights in all of the weight categories I now find it where that simply watching a bout in what we’re told is an title fight more often than not simply turns out to be a monotonous bore !
Here within the US many of the states are either aligned to multiple boxing authorities for their own self aggrandizement more than anything else . Furthermore domestically the rules governing the various state athletics commissions simply makes an outright mockery as to how the sport is actually regulated in North America , albeit that Las Vegas and New York city are seen as the Meccas for the sport .
Now there’s no denying that the loss of Mike Tyson from the sport in spite of his own misdeeds and the fact that Don King seemingly sucked the life blood out of the boxer like a vampire explicably led the fighter’s downfall. Those who simply state different are obviously not acutely aware as to King’s dealing with the fighters whose interests he claims to actually take care of. Simply look at the number of legal entanglements that he has had over the course of his career where he has been sued by fighters formerly associated with him ? It reads like a who’s of the sport from Muhammad Ali on down to the likes of Larry Holmes , Pernell Whitaker , George Foreman and Leon Spinks ___ all fighters who at one time or another had the rather dubious distinction of having to do business with the renowned promoter . This further emphasizes why the sport still remains corrupt and the strangle-hold that both Arum and King have on the sport as the two most dominant promoters in boxing .
I have long maintained that after Tyson’s mentor and former trainer Cus D’Amato died with King intervening seeking to lure Tyson away from his then co-managers Bill Clayton and John Jacobs simply led to the downward spiral of his professional career and private life . Given that King merely saw the young fighter as his way to numerous riches creating conflict within the Tyson camp were the means to the necessary ends for the promoter and all that he sought to achieve . And as impressive as Mike Tyson’s ascent to the top of the boxing world was said to be , his downfall if anything was all the more startling and the numerous events that led to it all. His incarceration for the rape of pageant contestant Desiree’ Washington and those three ” infamous fights” with Evander Holyfield was enough to suggest that as the biggest draw in the sport we simply yearned for more from Mike Tyson as we were all interested in seeing the train the wreck that his life had now become.
In watching fight during e early part of his career was simply to witness a ferocious animal intimidating , tormenting and then devouring its prey. What Tyson was able to achieve in becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history by defeating Trevor Berbick for the WBC heavyweight title sent shock waves through the sport and especially within the division . Granted , the fighter had been mowing down opponents the way the machine gun had been used during the St Valentine’s Day Masscare led everyone to believe that Mike Tyson’s longevity as the world champion might well be a long one . And for all of his attributes as a fighter the one lingering issue I had with the boxer was the mere fact that biggest advantage was also to my mind his weakest attribute ! He intimidated his opponents to such an extent that he felt he was impervious , unbeatable and if anything complacent . His power lay within the fact that he could knock a fighter out with either hand but if anything his boxing skills were simply not as good as many purists believed it to be. Historians would suggest that his uppercuts and right cross were his most dangerous weapons in his arsenal but if anything what we would then find out over the course of Mike Tyson was the fact that his chin was indeed made of glass .
When Mike Tyson lost his title having made nine successful defense and the fact his demise came at the hands of what many believed was a journeyman in James ‘Buster’ Douglas at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo , Japan , was all the more unbelievable . Douglas to my mind brought with him solid credentials in terms of his fight resume’ ! But it would appear that odds-makers simply viewed Tyson as the prohibitive favorite and the Douglas as simply another stat to pad the fighter’s already impressive record . What would follow then and all of the controversy that surrounds the fight to this day simply attests to the fact that no matter what you came to expect from a Mike Tyson fight there was always a chance that you get to see the unexpected . Tyson crawling around all on fours unable to beat the count of a rather surprised Octavio Meyran , the referee who presided over the bout left over 70,000 fans and a global audience of millions absolutely shell-shocked . The bewildered Tyson who had earlier knocked down the challenger in an earlier round (eighth) would lose in by a knockout in the tenth round . In the aftermath of that fight Tyson’s claim as the ‘baddest man on the planet’ clearly was now a thing of the past .
Don King as the promoter sought have the fight verdict overturned but that simply didn’t happen and Douglas’ own reign as the champion itself was somewhat short-lived as he would lose the title in his very first defense in a lackluster performance in a third round loss to Evander Holyfield at the MGM Mirage & Casino Complex in Las Vegas , Nevada in October of 1990 .
As I survey the boxing scene especially within the heavyweight division I simply no credibility within the division . It has become so asinine in seeing the ridicule being heaped upon the whole landscape of the category . What might be even more incredible this is the very same division that has given us great champions such as Joe Louis , Rocky Marciano , Muhammad Ali , Floyd Patterson , Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis who have all distinguished themselves as former heavyweight champions of the world. The division no longer has any real legitimacy or credibility to it at all and while this all happens the category has simply become the laughing stock of the sports’ world and boxing in particular . One simply can no longer count on any of the major governing bodies to do what is morally right in bringing about a unified division as they simply have too much vested in their own well being from a financial standpoint rather than seeing the integrity of the sport rise to where it should be . But in reality I now believe that the hierarchies in question have now lost the opportunity to bring their sport back amongst the masses along the lines where the fans feel that they can once again take an interest in boxing .
The sport of boxing is now losing out to the upstart genre of MMA and the fact that the premiere governing body UFC stages bouts around the globe that has fans attending in droves , gives credence as to one of the main reasons why boxing has been steadily on the decline for almost a decade . Boxing for its part simply markets the brand to a select demographic base , those willing to spend $49-95 for PPV and major title bouts . And it now has becomes a rarity to find a major network broadcast of a bout much less a fight that is actually worth watching . Not so in the case of the UFC and the events that they stage for mass consumption and that of their major title bouts.
As to what the future holds for the heavyweight division doesn’t bode well without there being an undisputed champion . If anything it leaves the whole division with a void and a vacuum , moreover , the fans yearn for something far more exciting and meaningful. Mike Tyson may well have had his flaws but you simply knew that while he was in the ring he brought about a great deal of excitement lured us all to watch his fights . Now you’d be hard pressed to show any interest to watch either of the Klitschko brothers fight much realize that they’re said to be heavyweight champions of the world .

No it wasn’t just Don King but also Bob Arum ! Both have had a great deal cast about their dubious integrity as it relates to the sport and their business dealings not just with the fighters they either manage or promote but also how they get each of the governing bodies to place certain fighters in their prospective ranking systems . Less we forget also each have had their own issues with not just the IRS but also the US Justice Department but somehow they have each come out of it all unscathed ? With that much evidence against a civilian that person would now be doing some serious friggin’ time !
If only there was someone on the horizon with Tyson’s persona and talent but more grounded there would be hope for the sport but at this juncture I am more inclined to watch to two lesbians slobber over each other as they’re in various stages of undress ! Boxing on all levels has simply now become one big monotonous fu_king bore !
That’s why the UFC is now killing the sport hands down anyone believes that to be the contrary is simply a dumb ass !
‘The Hangover’ may well be Tyson’s biggest hit since he left the ring but if anything it still proves he’s mor e of a draw than the vast majority of the boxers now involved in the sport and that includes the likes of Pacquaio and Mayweather !

It’s not solely King and Arum but also the four international governing bodies of the sport . The IBF , WBA , WBC & WBO have simply been a joke ! They’re open to bribery as long the needs meet the end , whereby they will profit greatly . And most certainly the situation here hasn’t been helped domestically with there being not one solely independent hierarchy that governs the sport . Instead it’s left to the fifty independent states and the regulatory bodies that oversees professional athletics . In some cases the heads of those hierarchies have absolutely no knowledge or business acumen as it relates to professional sports , much less the sport of boxing itself . So you can’t place the preponderance of blame merely upon Don King alone .

The sport is all but dead and buried ! Hopkins is getting old , Pacquiao won’t be around fighting five years from now unless he’s been forced to do so by his promoter Bob Arum. And can we all agree that Floyd Mayweather is wanted in the sport the way an elderly patient with cardiac problems yearns another severe heart attack . Mayweather is too self absorbed and a god-damn known spouse and child abuser !

The powers that be need to bring boxing back to the people. Back in the day we could watch title bouts without it costing an arm and a leg. It is a great sport and deserves better than it’s getting from the shysters in charge of it now.

The problems we’re now seeing engulfing the sport of boxing is not unlike the asinine situation that now engulfs both the Obama — administration , their inaction and that of both legislative chambers of Congress as it relates to the ” debt crisis” debacle . The House , Senate and Barack Obama have been about as proactive as a blind man playing hopscotch in the midst of a minefield . They’re liable to blow themselves up before they solve any of the acute issues that the nation faces and it’s the same thing with the sport of boxing !
Both entities are so f_cking corrupt that it simply no longer warrants discussing as to their merits and achievements !

Another thing that would help the sport would be if each of the major international governing bodies all worked in conjunction with one another rather than trying to outdo each other as they have often done . Simply look at the rankings of the WBA , WBC , IBF and IBO as it relates to the top 10 contenders for the heavyweight division ? There’s no real consistency and bear in mind with the persuasive powers of promoters such Arum and King this all becomes skewered to favor the fighters they promote or manage and that’s even when their records aren’t that impressive to begin with .
So nothing that’s said to be transparent within the sport is actually that at all . It’s as the saying goes ……… ” money talks bullshit walks” !

Interesting take on Tyson. I think he was a byproduct of a weak heavyweight class mixed with some devastating force. He wasn’t really a boxer, but more of a slugger. I don’t remember him ever winning by decision, which shows his skills were all in his power. Would I put him in the top ten boxers of all time? Probably not, but I’d put him in the top ten heavyweights all-time.

That tends to happen but in all honesty Holmes was on the downside of his career as were Michael Moorer (not good at all by my way of thinking) , Foreman , and Holyfield —— his old ass is still fighting as of now . Had Tyson come along at the height of Holmes , Frazier and Ali in their prime then his ass would have been beaten to a pulp by those guys at the height of their fame .

But in all honesty Buster Douglas wasn’t that great to begin with and Don King who thought Tyson was a shoo-in to win the bout picked him out because he thought the guy was a walking tomato can willing to take a pounding . When the events started to unfold and we all witnessed what happened then we all began to realize that the hype behind Tyson was all that and not much else pure hype !. He was a half way skilled boxer but no great tactician at all . Fast hands but simply no defensive skills or the know in conserving his energy in spite of the likes of Nick Charles , Jim Lampley and Bert Sugar stating to the contrary . As insightful as that trio were said to be their love affair with Tyson bordered on being almost homo-erotic .

What sport nowadays isn’t filled with some form of impropriety ? FIFA’s now suspended vice (ACF ) Chairman Mohammed Bin Hammam who was embroiled in the bribery scandal now says he’ll sue Sepp Blatter and the entire executive committee of soccer’s governing body for libel , slander and defaming him publicly and privately .

Blatter having suspended him now knows that bin Hammam could very well open up a can of worms as to the FIFA President’s own improprieties of which there are said to be many in terms bribery subverting justice and political corruption .

As for Don King he’s not the only corrupt boxing promoter out there as many of them have scraped their way to the top through malevolent means and that includes the likes of Bob Arum and Oscar de La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions Inc. As for Pacquiao until he fails a drug test he’ll be viewed as clean . Thus far in his career he’s yet to fail one which is no indication that his promoter Arum hasn’t had any of his fighters come under a great deal of suspicion .

The sport has always been corrupt from its beginning and that is even with the Marquess of Queensbury trying to bring some integrity to boxing with its first set of rules . I know you’d prefer to see two hot females beating on each other and that to my mind ain’t wrong with that at all !

Look at baseball and the lack of integrity that has been shown within the sport throughout the years of its existence from the racial bigotry that existed and still exists now within the sport ? I hardly think that Aaron , Willie Mays or Jackie Robinson were that appreciative of the death threats or racial epithets thrown their way at the height of their fame ! But you have idiots out there nowadays carrying on as if this sport is so respectable and pure in its essence . That somehow when you think about it is such a fuc_ing joke ! You tell me who’s appreciative of that sort of behavior other than an idiot ?

I caught the Tyson documentry on Showtime. I’ve always felt sorry for the guy, he had it all but he always wound up misguided by those that were supposed to be looking out for his best intrests.
Those sure were some amazing years of boxing, the 80’s and 90’s and they sure did follow up the Ali & Frazier era with a bang.
George Foreman beating Michael Moore to become the oldest Heavyweight champ ever ranks right up there in sports moments from that decade. The Rangers winning the Cup was another. Those two moments kind of took the sting out of the fall of Mike Tyson for myself.
Lennox Lewis was a beast, he took the spotlight after the dust had settled and I could never fathom such a beast of a man having such a mellow voice. I guess it was Tyson’s animal-like rage that portrayed the image of what a dominent heavyweight should sound like.
The most telling moment of the Showtime piece was when Tyson described his relationship with Lennox: “When I feed my piegons, they’ll fight to the death for that food, that’s the way fighters are, we need that money” and he went on to explain that he and Lennox had been close friends for a very long time.

Lennox was good but he wasn’t great fortunately for him he cleaned up the division and made it somewhat respectable . But he was far from a being a beast he simply didn’t apply himself to his craft because at times he simply looked disinterested . I know the guy personally as like myself he’s a Brit and we are from the same neighborhood in East London . He went off to Canada but some members of the family remained in the UK. That being said do you honestly believe he could stand toe to toe with the likes of Holmes , Foreman , or even Shavers in their prime ?
How many title defenses did Lewis make over the course of his career ? Because if anything that’s the mark of a champion ! Lewis didn’t have a grip on the title and look at who he lost it to ? So come off the asinine stupidity of him being something that he simply is not ! He was an able champion , that’s all .
Tyson’s downfall was of his own making and that of Don King . Had Jacobs and Clayton been around then there’s no way in hell his career would’ve spiraled out of control the way it did .

YES, the answer to your question of Tyson being the greatest thing to happen in boxing, well collectivly in our generation. Tyson was the first heavyweight in nearly every household by way of Nintento’s punch-out, his popularity will never fade away especially when you now have the UFC pulling people away from boxing.

Tyson was good for the sport but he could’ve been so much more and that’s the sad part of this tragedy ! What has boxing and in particular the heavyweight scene really got to show for it all ? Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko ? Are you fu##ing kidding me ?
Tyson’s popularity won’t fade but his career to most will be viewed as a disappointment because there are those who genuinely believe that he could have achieved so much more had he really applied himself to his craft .
As for UFC my favorite fighters are by far in a way Anderson Silva , Georges St Pierre and Jon Jones !
Need we say anything more about Hardy ?
Dan Hardy is a damn joke and that was proven by the fact St Pierre made him his bitch ! But then again since St Pierre became the welterweight champion who hasn’t he made his bitch ?
Bisping will have his day but not while <a href="http:// Silva rules the roost amongst the middleweights ! And if moves up to light heavies his ass will be laid out by the likes of title holder Jon Jones and the other main contenders .

Lennox has his fans out there but I wouldn’t consider myself a real devotee of his ! I like the fact he won the title defended it but the losses he suffered however as champion were embarrassing and that’s something you’ve discounted in making him out into something that he clearly isn’t .
He’s banked his “cheddar” and carved a name out for himself as an entrepreneur and that’s great for him and his family . Lennox is to be complimented for that unlike some of his peers such as Frank Bruno .
